2. INTRODUCTION
• Psychoanalytic accounts unconscious mental
processes.
• Also known as ‘Depth psychology’.
• Originated by Austrian psychiatrist ‘Sigmund
Freud’.
• He studied patients of neurotic under
‘hypnosis’.
3. DEFINITION
• An individual gets motivated more by those forces which are often
unseen and are controlled by the conscious and the rational thought.
• Basically it is a personality theory.
• Personality is formed through conflicts among three fundamental
structures of human mind- Id, Ego, Superego.
4. FREUD’S EXPERIMENT
• Patients showed improvement, when sources of patient’s ideas and
impulses were brought into consciousness.
• Patients were talking freely when they were not treated under hypnosis,
called as ‘Free association of ideas’.
• Anxiety is the consequence of the repressed energy ‘Libido’
• With this Freud came to know the three structure of personality.
5. FREE ASSOCIATION OF IDEAS
• Technique to explore unconscious mind.
• People are allowed to talk freely without
any hypnosis and say whatever comes to
their mind.
• No matter how trivial or embarrassing it
is.
6. CONSCIOUS MIND
• It includes all the things that you are currently
aware of and thinking about.
• It is a short-term memory and limited in
capacity.
• Being aware is the part of your consciousness.
• Any feelings, thoughts and sensations that you
are aware of at a particular moment.
7. PRECONSCIOUS MIND
• The information which can be easily
retrievable into conscious awareness, that
state of mind is known as preconscious
mind.
• Presently you are not aware of the things
but you can get into conscious awareness
when required.
• It is a part of ordinary memory.
8. UNCONSCIOUS MIND
• The region of mind set that corresponds to
unacceptable thoughts, wishes, feelings and
memories.
• You are not aware of those thoughts but they
have influence on your conscious thoughts.
• These thoughts are outside of our conscious
awareness.
9. THREE STRUCTURE OF PERSONALITY
• The behavior of human is formed by
the interaction of these three
components of mind-
1. Id
2. Ego
3. Super Ego
• These personality creates conflict
among parts of the mind which
helps in shaping the behavior and
personality.
• These conflicts are mainly
11. CONFLICT WITHIN THE MIND
• According to Freud, the role of the
‘ego’ is to balance the aggressive or
pleasure-seeking drives of the ‘Id’ with
the moral control of the ‘superego’.

water signifies the conscious mind.
• While the much larger portion
below the water illustrates the
unconscious mind.

14. PSYCHOSEXUAL STAGES
• According to Freud, during childhood development, Id’s pleasure
seeking energies are categorized in different parts of the body.
• There are five stages which includes- oral, anal, phallic, latency, and
genital.
• It is possible that person can stuck at any stage and after becoming
adult tries to achieve that pleasure by any means.
15. 1. ORAL STAGE (BIRTH – 1 YEAR)
• Mouth is only thing that giving
sexual pleasure.
• Pleasure comes from chewing,
sucking and biting.
• Weaning a child will lead to oral
activities after becoming adult.
16. 2. ANAL STAGE (1-3 YEARS)
• Training of how to do toilet.
• Satisfaction comes from bowel and
bladders functions.
• Learns independence and personal
power
• Knows to express aggression.
• Learns discipline.
17. 3. PHALLIC STAGE (3-5 YEARS)
• Pleasure shifts to genitals.
• Attraction towards opposite sex.
• Boys have feelings of incestuous towards
their mother and rival feelings towards their
father.
• Oedipus complex- Boy desires mother as
love object.
• Electra complex- Girl desires father as love
and his approval.
18. 4. LATENCY STAGE (5- PUBERTY)
• Sexual interests are replaced by
participating in sports, games and other
hobbies/activities in school.
• Child tries to become socialize and forms
relationship with others.
• Sexual thoughts are repressed due to
intense anxiety of Oedipus complex.
• Dormant sexual feelings.
19. 5. GENITAL STAGE (PUBERTY ON)
• Starts with puberty.
• It develops feelings towards opposite sex.
• The Incestuous sexual feelings re-emerge
again but the superego make sure that it
is directed towards only to those who
resembles with the person.
• Person’s motto is ‘to love and to work’.
