1 Root Cause Analysis and Materials Selection - Tensioner Piston Rod
Corrosion
Client: Rolls-Royce Power Engineering PLC.
Project background:
In late 2013 after around 6 months active service the owner/operator of the drill rig
contacted Rolls-Royce with concerns over the surface condition of the above piston rods.
Numerous marks, subsequently identified as corrosion pitting were observed on the outer
surface of the two new 80k riser tensioner piston rods and the new 18k guideline tensioner
piston rod. The two new compensator piston rods and the other hand did not show signs of
any surface corrosion pitting. The replacement piston rods were fabricated from
martensitic stainless steels ASTM A182 F6NM and equivalent grade DIN 1.4313.. The
martensitic stainless steel material used to fabricate the new piston rods is different to the
chrome nickel steel previously used.
The SOW for the report consists of the following
To review the original material specification with a view to advising on the
operational suitability in the stated environment, highlighting the basis for the
individual chemical; components and their contribution to the material properties
To clarify the suitability of the replacement piston rod materials in the current
operating conditions and environment and how the differences from the original
specification are;
To clarify would the selected replacement piston materials be expected to corrode
in the manner and in the time frame which has been observed;
5. CURRICULUM VITAE
KHOI TU Page 5/16
To comment/review the two compensator cylinder rods and the fact that there is no
apparent pitting so far;
To advise any practical methods to minimise the corrosion / pitting risks to the rod
surface;
Any alternative materials or rectification is required other than hard chrome plating
with a view to advising on the operational suitability in the stated environment.
Position: Senior Engineer
2 CORROSION RISK ASSESSMENT (CRA) & CORROSION CONTROL SCHEME (CCS)
Assessing corrosion risks and developing appropriate inspection and mitigation measures
forms a vital part of Asset Integrity Management System (AIMS) / Pipeline Integrity
Management System (PIMS) for operating any ageing asset / pipeline.
Corrosion related failures of processing facilities and subsea pipelines are a major
source of risk to offshore oil & gas installations and pipeline system. Corrosion threats
and their risk levels are considered based on operation parameters, inspection & sampling
reports, intelligent pigging (ILI survey), ROV survey alongside design and as-built
documents / drawings. CRA results are one of important inputs for a PIMS as shown in
Figure 1.
