Narrative
The cut-sequence is set on an off road between a restraint and a bridge, Joel and
Sarah are running from infected before they are stopped by a soldier who kills the
infected and then turns on Joel and Sarah, he shoots at them before Joel’s brother
Tommy turns up, kills the soldier and then notices Sarah has been shot and the cutsequence ends with Sarah in Joel’s arms dying.
The way the setting is shown by sound in the cut-sequence is when Joel is running
on off road you can here his feet stomping on the dirt/squelching in mud.
Also when they are shot at you can hear them roll through the dirt and grass that is
on the hill.
The way the cut-sequence sets the mood is by when they are running away from the
infected there is a loud banging noise which could suggest that they are in
danger/scared and they are trying to escape or it could be a slight display of Joel’s
heartbeat as he is running, scared for his life.
Another way the mood is shown is when they are stopped by a soldier, there is little
to no sound which shows a hint of suspension leading up to what is going to happen
next.
Also the last way the mood is shown is when Sarah is dying, the main theme starts
to play which is a subtle song and this sets the mood to sad and that bad things have
happened/going to happen.
The game genre is a survival horror and this is shown by the basic survival horror
sounds, zombie/infected sounds and very loud thumping noises which suggest
danger, heaving breathing from running and also worried voices because they are
scared and don’t know what is going to happen.
The narrative varies between scared and upset, when Joel and Sarah are running
from the infected they are speaking about what has happened and they are scared
because they don’t know what is going to happen.
When the soldier stops them he is very affirmative and Joel is scared/angry because

he stopped them and won’t listen to him, also when he shoots at Joel and Sarah,
Sarah screams which shows she is scared.
When Joel and Tommy realise Sarah has been shot, Sarah is crying and screaming
because she is scared of what is going to happen and she is in a lot of pain, also Joel
is crying because he is also scared about what is going to happen.
