2. March 23, 1901: Aguinaldo captured
by U.S. troops
During the Philippine War, on March 23, 1899, American
troops captured Emilio Aguinaldo, a revolutionary leader
from the Philippines (1869–1964). The history of
Aguinaldo serves as a metaphor for how the Philippines
and the United States interacted in the last years of the
nineteenth century.

3. It should come as no surprise that the United States refused to
recognize Aguinaldo's authority, leading to his declaration of war
against American soldiers in the islands on February 4, 1899.
Aguinaldo departed public life after being apprehended on March
23, 1901, and consented to swear allegiance to the United States.
