2. Self-Esteem
and Self-Concept
are Different?
Self-esteem is defined as ones sense of self
worth. If someone has high self-esteem
they have a positive general attitude
towards themselves, whereas one with low
self esteem would have a negative general
attitude about themselves. On the other
hand, self-concept is a evaluation of one’s
own abilities. When someone has self-
concept, they have a grasp of their own
strengths and weaknesses. While self-
esteem and self-concept are different, they
both reflect how we view ourselves. It is of
paramount importance that one has good
self-concept and high self-esteem so that
one can live their life to the fullest. This can
positively impact my life by not only
motivating me to work to have high self-
esteem and good self-concept, but also to
help others.
3. AreYou My Mommy?
The topic of love in the psychological
field was obscure and lacking in
conclusive information until an
experiment by Harry Harlow. His was
the the first experiment on affection,
in which he used baby rhesus
monkeys. In Harlow’s experiment, he
showed how the baby monkeys
preferred the warmth and comfort of
the cloth mother as opposed to the
wire mother even though the wire
mother provided nourishment. His
experiment highlights the importance
of reinforcing affection with contact
comfort.This information has already
influenced my life in that I have made
sure that I hug my family much more
often than I used to.
4. (Observation) Watch MeThink(Cognitive)
When someone learns from what they
see in their environment that is called
observational learning. Observational
learning is also called social learning.
The father of observational/social
learning is a psychologist by the name
of Albert Bandura.When someone
acquires knowledge or skill through
metal processes it is called cognitive
learning. Cognitive learning has to do
with one’s schema.A schema is a
mental framework that helps an
individual to organize and interpret
information. Cognitive learning result
in modification of one’s schema due to
the new information that is added. My
knowledge of observational and
cognitive learning can help me further
improve my people skills.
5. What’sYour Problem?
An educator by the name of John Dewey developed a process of reflective thinking to help people
solve problems. This method is commonly used today and can be applied to a wide span of situations.
The process has been revised multiple times over the years and many variations exist. One variation
of Dewey’s method includes seven steps, which are define the problem, analyze the problem, identify
possible solutions, evaluate solutions, select the best solution, develop an action plan, and lastly
implement a solution. I can use this method to help me overcome obstacles, and to also help others
find solutions to their problems.
6. The StressThat Never Ends
Anxiety disorders cause those who are
diagnosed to have constant anxiety, to which
they may respond by using coping methods
that negatively impact themselves and those
around them. There are many symptoms of
anxiety, which makes diagnosis difficult. Some
of the symptoms of anxiety are irritability,
dizziness, weight loss or gain, sleeplessness,
and racing heartbeat. Many of us have
experienced these symptoms, but in order for
it to be a disorder there must be deviance,
distress, and dysfunction. Anxiety disorders are
actually the most common mental illness in the
United States. The most common anxiety
disorders are GeneralizedAnxiety Disorder,
Phobia, Panic Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive
Disorder, and Post-traumatic Stress Disorder. I
can apply this information to my life by
understanding that some of the symptoms are
normal and just because someone exhibits
some of the symptoms does not mean they
have an anxiety disorder.
