This paper addresses the benefits of a prototype (INVESTIGATIONAL – NOT FOR COMMERCIAL SALE) cone beam computed tomography system (hereafter referred to as the “CBCT system”) dedicated to extremity imaging. The CBCT system was co-developed by scientists at Carestream Health and John Hopkins University. The CBCT system has demonstrated spatial and contrast resolution beyond the limits of conventional multi-detector CT (MDCT) at a reduced radiation exposure1. The CBCT system was designed to image both upper and lower extremities, with the lower extremities also capable of being imaged in a weight-bearing configuration. This unique capability can unveil and better characterize certain pathologies in the knee and ankle joints such as meniscal extrusion, altered tibiofemoral joint space morphology, flatfoot deformity, and distal tibiofibular syndesmosis insufficiency. Suture anchors are routinely used for shoulder labral reconstruction procedures. There is paucity of literature on how the response of bone to suture anchor should be measured following labral reconstruction. A new system, based on the use of magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, has been developed by Professor Bhatti and his trainee which grades bone signal changes around suture anchors using a five-point scale. This system, however, has not yet been tested on a clinical dataset. We tested the reliability of the grading system in an independent dataset. This validation study demonstrates that the grading system is feasible and has generally moderate reliability. And, although results could be improved if a training document is added at the beginning of the study, this grading system should undergo further validation testing for use in clinical trials.

The volume information extracted from computed tomography angiogram is very useful for cardiologists to diagnose various diseases. An approach is presented to segment human coronary artery trees from the volumetric datasets. The coronary arteries’ surfaces are recovered by triangle mesh with the boundary points extracted from the coronary artery voxels segmented. The positions where the calcified plaques occur are identified by mapping the intensities of boundary points of the coronary artery trees on the triangle meshed surfaces. If different values of the computed maximum principle curvatures of boundary points surrounding the lumen cross section are mapped on the triangle meshed surfaces of the segmented coronary artery trees, the cross section structure of the coronary artery lumen segment is noncircular cross section structure.

An imaginary line measurement of the thorax is important for clinical need. There are several imaginary anatomical lines on the thorax that can be measured directly using a tape meter, such as: midclavicular line, midaxilla line, chest width, chest circumference, distance of incisura jugularis sterni to the processusxiphoideus, intermidclavicular line, the upper thoracic dome and the lower thoracic dome. The objective of this article is to provide information on the average anatomical imaginary line value on the thoracic of the adult male. The data was then used for manufacturing of a thoracic anatomical phantom. Some marks of imaginary lines formed by clavicula, costae, and sternum were used as a reference in measurement. The anatomical imaginary line measurements were performed using a tape meter directly on 10 adult male samples, and carried out based on Chest X ray image of the same samples on a Computer Radiography (CR) workstation computer. Both measurements were then analyzed; ultrasonography examination was used to get soft tissue thickness for correction. Average values for midclavicular line variable of measurement using a tape measure was (29.10 ± 1.80) cm and the average value for the midclavicular line variable of measurement using Chest X ray on a CR workstation computer was (21.24 ± 0.73) cm. The average values for the variables intermidclavicular line measurement using a tape measure was (19.60 ± 0.69) cm and the average value for the variable intermidclavicular line of measurement using Chest X ray on a CR workstation computer was (16.53 ± 1.19) cm.

Measurements of retinal blood vessel morphology have been shown to be related to the risk of cardiovascular diseases. The wrong identification of vessels may result in a large variation of these measurements, leading to a wrong clinical diagnosis. In this paper, we address the problem of automatically identifying true vessels as a post processing step to vascular structure segmentation. We model the segmented vascular structure as a vessel segment graph and formulate the problem of identifying vessels as one of finding the optimal forest in the graph given a set of constraints. We design a method to solve this optimization problem and evaluate it on a large real-world dataset of 2,446 retinal images. Experiment results are analyzed with respect to actual measurements of vessel morphology. The results show that the proposed approach is able to achieve 98.9% pixel precision and 98.7% recall of the true vessels for clean segmented retinal images, and remains robust even when the segmented image is noisy.

This work explored the relative and absolute reliability of three-dimensional (3D) anthropometry performed by skilled and naïve operators using a fast, pose tolerant whole-body 3D scanner device. Upon skin landmarking by an experienced operator (skilled anthropometrist, SA), twelve subjects (six males and six females) underwent a thorough 3D anthropometric evaluation by the SA and two naïve operators (NA). Using the same landmarks, the SA also performed traditional anthropometry measurements. All measurements were taken twice. Relative reliability was tested with the Pearson’s correlation coefficient r and the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC); absolute reliability was tested calculating the percentage coefficient of variation (%CV), the standard error of measurement (SEM), the percentage technical error of measurement (%TEM), and paired Student’s t test. Results showed that intra-operator relative and absolute reliability was excellent for all and most 3D measurement items, respectively, independently of the operator’s skill. Inter-operator (SA vs. individual NA) relative reliability was excellent as well; inter-operator absolute reliability was not acceptable for about only 30% of measurement items. Results of this work show that 3D anthropometry has strong potential in anthropometry due to high intrinsic reliability and less need for operator training vs. traditional anthropometry.

A novel approach for multimodal liver image contrast enhancement is put forward in this paper. The proposed approach utilizes magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of liver as a guide to enhance the structures of computed tomography (CT) liver. The enhancement process consists of two phases: The first phase is the transformation of MRI and CT modalities to be in the same range. Then the histogram of CT liver is adjusted to match the histogram of MRI. In the second phase, an adaptive histogram equalization technique is presented by splitting the CT histogram into two sub-histograms and replacing their cumulative distribution functions with two smooths sigmoid. The subjective and objective assessments of experimental results indicated that the proposed approach yields better results. In addition, the image contrast is effectively enhanced as well as the mean brightness and details are well preserved.

Health isn’t limited to the well-being of your body. Your body works only when your mind is robust. Mental health, just like physical health, deserves the utmost attention and care. When life throws curveballs, navigating difficult emotions and mental states can be challenging. With the hectic schedule and the hustle of life, our mental health takes a toll. Balancing it alongside our work turns out to be even more challenging. That’s where seeking professional help becomes crucial.

Our backs are like superheroes, holding us up and helping us move around. But sometimes, even superheroes can get hurt. That’s where slip discs come in. They’re like when the inside of a special part of our back pushes out a little. This can make our backs feel sore and uncomfortable. When our backs have a slipped disc, there are signs we can watch out for. First, there’s pain in one spot, like the lower back or neck. It can feel sharp and spread to other places. Then, our arms or legs might feel tingly or numb, like when they fall asleep. We might even have trouble moving some muscles or notice changes in how fast we react.

Gait deviations in transtibial amputations involve altered biomechanics and asymmetries. Research highlights that spatiotemporal gait parameters are affected, with reduced propulsive force, knee extension moment, and increased knee abduction moment in the amputated leg. Additionally, individuals with transtibial amputations exhibit shorter stance times, longer swing times, and larger step lengths compared to able-bodied individuals. These deviations can lead to asymmetrical loads, potentially causing issues like osteoarthritis or lower back pain. Furthermore, gait asymmetry in transtibial amputees is associated with poor functional outcomes, impacting performance-based physical function tests like the Timed Up and Go, the 10-Meter Walk Test, and the 6-Minute Walk Test. Understanding these gait abnormalities is crucial for tailored interventions and prosthetic design to improve outcomes for individuals with transtibial amputations.

A big part of cleaning up our lives requires us to change up bad habits, which can be a lot easier said than done. Last week on TCLP, I talked about how all our habits and everything that is “automatic” to us is governed by the subconscious. That’s why it’s important for us to learn how to work with our own subconscious minds and get them on board with the healthy changes we want to make in our lives. Today I’m going to be covering some effective methods to work with our subconscious minds to create cleaner habits that become so automatic we don’t even have to think about them. 🩷
