4. Arunachal Pradesh is also a land of beautiful handicrafts
comprising a wide variety. Arunachal is also known as the
“orchid state of India” and a “paradise” for botanist.
Artistic craftsmanship has been passed on from one
generation to the other.
Cane and bamboo is an important craft of this area, which
are distinctive in each region.
The tribal population of Arunachal came to depend on
these materials for constructing their dwellings, utensils,
furniture, and even weapons such as bows and arrows.
5. Cane and bamboo handicrafts are not the only priority of
Arunachal. It is also followed by other crafts, such as:
• Weaving
• Painting
• Smithy work
• Basketry
• Ornaments
• Weapons and
• Wood carving
6. There’s a procedure for making any kind of bamboo
or cane craft, such as:
• The whole stem is cut with a hacksaw
and split longitudinally with a billhook
• The cane is heated on a slow fire,
• After the heating is done the cane is
soaked in water for about 6 hours to
soften.
7. • Then the weaving process is done by either hands or
tools.
• Finally the items produced are cleaned with sand paper
for softness and polished with varnish for shine.
• The items are then dried for about 4-5 hours and are
finally ready to be used.
8. Basketry:
1. Conical basket
2. Semi-conical basket
3. Flat basket
Each basket varying from each region.
Like the tribe Apatani uses the flat
shaped basket where as the rest of the
tribe use conical shaped basket.
10. • The competition is with the goods making machine
• Lack of new methods and tools
• Lack of work place
• Low marketing
• Low financial support
11. Certain measurements are to be taken by the
government for sustaining the handicraft culture of
Arunachal:
• Supply raw materials
• Provide workplaces
• Create awareness
• Making handicraft a priority
• International relations
• Building more industries on the cause, hence creating
more opportunity
12. As a normal citizen, we don’t really have the privilege
to take the measurements that the government
should be taking. so here are certain measurements
that we as a public could take which are as follows:
• Prefer hand made goods over machine made
goods
• Hold and organise exhibitions
• Sponsor the local artisans
• Promote handicraft by advertising
• Engaging in online business
13.
14. After a glimpse on the handcrafts of Arunachal
Pradesh we come on terms that handcrafts are an
important factor to sustain a culture. Few
necessary measurements on how to keep
bamboo & cane handcraft going were also
mentioned and should not be taken for granted.
Because ultimately, loss of culture is loss of
identity.
