Igor Sikorsky born in 1889, Kyiv RUSSIAN EMPIRE
Fixed wing and helicopter pioneer
Influenced by Leonardo DaVinci and also Wright Brothers
1914 – WWI – airplane research & production business was flourishing in Kyiv
1917 – Russian Revolution
1918 – Igor fled due to the Bolshevik threats, moved to France
1919 – War ended and moved to USA
Many crash / burn attempts at helicopters, and many successes
Lectured in the US at U of Rhode Island and U of Bridgeport

1923 – Sikorsky Manufacturing Co – NY – Backed by Russian military and also
of note, musical composer, Rachmaninoff
1928 – US Citizen and business moved to CT
1929 – Company rolled up to United Technologies
Began developing “flying boats” (S-42) used by Pan-Am for transatlantic flights
1930’s – Merged with Vought Aircraft
Producer of UH-60 Black Hawk and SH-60 Seahawk, and experimental types,
Sikorsky S-72.
1957 – Began supplying the Presidential helicopter. (Now VH-3 and VH-60 )

2015 - Sikorsky purchased by Lockheed Martin for
$9B
Sikorsky designates nearly all of its models with
S-numbers;
Numbers S-1 through S-27 were designed by Igor
Sikorsky before he left the Russian Empire.
Later models, especially helicopters, received multiple
designations by the military services using them, often
depending on purpose - (UH, SH, and MH etc.) May 25, 1889 – October 26, 1972

 Highly specialized - focus on aircraft mfg, primarily DOD – Navy;
 Dollars appear to be declining on DOD side, but 2023 may have some
upside (large purchases – cyclical - fluctuations);
 DHS (Coast Guard) shows some promise;
 Navigate through Lockheed to work with this division as a sub;
Research their Tier 1 suppliers first!
 Mostly awarded large contracts broken into very few pieces
