Handling, storage and precautions while using fungicides
COURSE :- Chemicals in plant disease management [PAT- 511]
3. INTRODUCTION
• PESTICIDES AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION
• CROP PROTECTION [Insect pests and diseases]
• RISKS [Humans, livestock, wildlife, or the environment]
Certain pesticides, when they are not stored, handled, or
applied properly, can lead to:
Human exposure to toxic materials, which may cause injury,
death, or long-term health effects (e.g., cancer, asthma).
Contamination of water, air, soil, and habitat.
Bio-accumulation of some products in body tissues.
Excess residue on food through overuse and/or improper
timing of use on food products.
Pest resistance.
Economic losses due to crop damage or poor management.
Effect on natural control agents.
Side effects of exposure
Poisoning
Headache
Nausea
Skin rashes and irritation
Chemical burns
Cancer
Birth defects
Diseases of the lungs,
liver or kidneys
Nervous system
disorders.
4. WHILE PURCHASING……..
• Purchase pesticides/biopesticides only from
registered pesticide dealers having valid
license.
• Purchase only just required quantity of
pesticides for a specified area.
• See approved labels on the
containers/packets of pesticides.
• See batch no., Registration number, date of
manufacture/ expiry on the labels.
• Purchase pesticides well packed in
containers.
5. DURING STORAGE….
• Store the pesticides away from house
premises.
• Keep pesticides in original containers.
• Pesticides/weedicides must be stored
separately.
• Where pesticides have been stored, area
should be marked with warning signs.
• Pesticides be stored away from the reach of
the children and live stocks.
• Storage place should be well protected from
direct sunlight and rain
6. WHILE HANDLING….
• Keep pesticides separate during
transportation.
• Bulk pesticides should be carried
tactfully to the site of application.
SELECTION OF EQUIPMENTS…
• Select right kind of equipment.
• Select right sized nozzles.
• Use separate sprayer for fungicides and
insecticides and weedicides.
7. WHILE PREPARING SPRAY
SOLUTION…..
• Always use clean water.
• Use protective clothing viz., Hand gloves, face
masks, cap, apron, full trouser, etc. To cover whole
body.
• Always protect your nose, eyes, ears, hands, etc.
From spill of spray solution
• Read instructions on pesticide container label
carefully before use.
8. • Prepare the solution as per requirement.
• Granular pesticides should be used as
such.
• Avoid spilling of pesticides solutions while
filling the spray tank.
• Always use recommended dosage of
pesticide.
• No activities should be carried out which
may affect your health.
9. WHILE APPLYING SPRAY
SOLUTIONS….
• Apply only recommended dose and dilution.
• Spray operation should be conducted on cool and
calm day.
• Spray operation should be conducted on sunny day
in general.
• Use recommended sprayer for each spray.
• Spray operation should be conducted in the wind
direction.
• After spray operation, sprayer and buckets should
be washed with clean water using detergent/soap.
• Avoid the entry of animals/workers in the field
immediately after spray.
10.
11. AFTER SPRAY OPERATION….
• Left over spray solutions should be disposed
off at safer place viz. Barren isolated area.
• The used/empty containers should be
crushed with stone/stick and buried deep in
soil away from water sources.
• Wash hands and face with clean water and
soap before eating/smoking.
• On observing poisoning symptoms give the
first aid and show the patient to doctor. Also
show the empty container to doctor.
12.
13. • A field based cross sectional study was conducted in
the rural areas of Karnataka state, Gadag district,
to assess the farmer’s knowledge, attitudes and
practices about pesticide usage and its harmful
effects on human health.
• A pre-tested semi-structured questionnaire was
used to obtain the data from January to February
2020.
• Data was collected at the rural settings by visiting
their house and agriculture fields and Totally 265
farmers were interviewed.
14. • In this study almost all the farmers have
knowledge about definition of pesticide, its name,
how many times it should be sprayed, storage and
its safe usage.
• Majority of the farmers were aware about
necessity of reading the label on pesticide prior to
its usage and nearly half of them know the names
of banned pesticides (table 3).
• 1/3rd of the farmers responded that the necessity
of the reading the label on pesticide container.
• Almost all (96.6%) farmers are knows that how
many times they have sprayed the pesticide.
15. • In the present study majority
(36.6%) of the study participants
responded that pesticide residue will
exist in air, soil, surface water and
fruits, seeds, leaves of crop.
• For the question disposal of
pesticide containing majority
(26.8%) of the responded, they will
burn the containers (Table 4).
16. • In this study all farmers replied that they were aware about the adverse health effects of pesticides and if
they get exposed then they will visit the hospital. If they saw the pesticide poisoned person they will take
them into the hospital, nearly half of the farmers responded that they will wash pesticide contacted skin
with soap and water.
• None of them aware about the poison information centre and its toll free number (1800- 4250297) (Table
5).
17. CONCLUSION
• In this study majority of the farmers aware about the pesticide usage but only few
of them are aware about harmful effects of the pesticide usage on health.
• Henceforth continuous education provision on proper mixing or spraying would
increase their knowledge and helps to avoid the harmful consequence on health.
