2. Production techniques research
• Research potential production techniques you might want to use or
feel would be most appropriate – these can be related to camera,
editing, story, sound, etc
• You should look at a minimum of 3 related products in your research.
• You should collect clips/still images/how to guides/etc that might
help you. When watching scenes from films, etc you could also ask
potential target audience what they think.
• You may need to add extra slides!
• With each technique you should assess whether you can use it or
how you might employ or why you may want to disregard it
completely
• Always think about your investigations links to your intentions and
production!
3. Product 1 - Heart to Break - Kim Petras (Official Music Video)
Using the official music video as a style
reference is very helpful as it shows the
kind of colour grading Kim uses in her
videos, so even in an environment where
it may be dimly lit the colours are still very
prevalent with everything being bright
and vibrant.
As well as the colours there’s also what is actually
within the frame. When laying down on the bed
looking at her phone, Kim looks away from the
picture of the guy she’s talking to as she ponders
whether it’s worth pursuing the relationship or
not. Also in the frame is the ‘Fragile’ warning from
the packaging strip that is present in most of the
video, this of course further links the visuals to the
lyrics of the song creating a direct tie to the two.
4. Product 2 - Kero Kero Bonito - Lipslap
• The music video for Lipslap by Kero
Kero Bonito is very non-linear
whilst also remaining mostly
naturalistic throughout. This style
and aesthetic in general is similar to
what I want to utilise, especially the
colours and visuals present near the
end of the video with the darker
colours foregrounding with the
more vibrant strobe-like lighting in
the background
The kitchen sink type of setting
mixed with the random acts
shown throughout the video is
exactly like the concept I want to
use in my music video. This music
video shows me that to use that
effectively I should use lots of
rapid cuts especially if it's one
location with mostly one or two
types of framing
5. Product 3 – A Step-By-Step Guide to Making a
Music Video This guide outlines the most important
and essential aspects of making a music
video and also offers some useful
advice that I can apply to my final
product. It discusses gathering the
appropriate equipment alongside
having a team of people with you to
make things a lot easier, as most film
projects are a lot better with even just
one set of extra hands so you—the
director—aren't running around doing
every job on set at the same time
A very useful section of this guide is to be mindful of the following
aspects; execessive zooming, avoid using lots of special effects but think
about audio effects that could be used. But most importantly don't be over
ambitious and do something that is feasible, which I've taken into
consideration when choosing which idea to go with with out of the 3
concepts I had planned.
6. Conventions
•General Conventions Mise En Scene Editing
Camera & Bright colours. Light lighten. Lots
of make up and fashion accessories. Tints and
filters to boost colours. Photoshopped artists
so they look perfect. Many close ups of
artists faces. Long shots of dancing/partying
scenes. Pop music videos are all about the
artist to sell the song to the audience
7. Genre Characteristics
• Most videos/songs being lighthearted and fun
• High energy with lots of cutting between different angles
and close-ups of the artist
• Artist is usally young (16-20)
• Lots of high saturated colours
8. Experiment 1 & 2 + Reflections
EXPERIMENT 1
• We filmed a small portion of a lip-sync to a song to check to see how difficult it could be to
sync the audio up with what's happening on screen. We found in editing once you are able
to match up the audio near the beginning of the video (considering we shot it in one take)
the lip sync works well. We then decided to try doing multiple shots and see how difficult it
would be to match up the audio and found that you do need to be more precise.
REFLECTION
• To remedy the impreciseness of the audio we decided to shoot a longer portion of each
lyric we'd cut between to give us more room to work with for each lyric, this also gave us a
lot more footage to work with but once it was shaved down we had the best of everything
we had created with a good end product
EXPERIMENT 2
• We experimented with different usage of colour on set to try and match my research (Kero
Kero Bonito's visuals specifically). We used different white lighting and found that this
worked well but wasn't visually interesting and was very bland and unenthusiastic which
was a detriment to the style an branding we were going for for the final product.
REFLECTION
• We decided to instead use coloured lighting and found this was much more effective as the
vast range of moods and tones we could create through use of colour breathed a lot more
life into the video overall. However this did make the image quality a little darker in some
shades, but this encouraged us to use creative methods to create different light sources for
the artist's face to become the most prevelant in the frame, which was very important for
the final product.
