o Indian Civilization. Harappa Mohenjo-Daro areas,
paintings and writings on walls found.
o Earliest Ads – for religious purposes. Indoor Visual
Communications.
o Outdoor Advertisements began with the peddlers
or hucksters selling their wares in the cities and
market.
o Prior to British Rule, Ads in India – not for business
purposes. Kind of economy – village economy.
o Shouting and giving samples were the only form of
ads.

products advertised.
o Thus commercial advertisements appeared during
the 18th century.
o In 1780, 1st Indian Newspaper “Bengal Gazette”
was started by Hickley in Calcutta.
o By 1786 – several weekly newspapers and monthly
periodicals. “Bengal Journal” – carried all
Government advertisements.
o “The Carrier” – Bombay based, established in 1790,
printed ads in different local dialects.
o 1791 – Government Gazette was established,
featured all the government advertisements.

became prominent.
o B. Dattaram & Co. – 1st Indian Advertising Agency,
1905.
o Prior to independence, growth of advertisement –
slow.
o Post 1st world war, several advertising agencies

o 1920 – Gujarat Advertising Agency and Indian
Advertising Agency
o The American advertising agency “Thompson
Agency” was established in 1929.

India; Gandhiji’s Swadeshi Movement against
foreign goods. Advertisements of Indians goods
increased in newspapers rapidly.
o 1914 – 14 advertising agencies, 1944 – 45 agencies
were operating in India.
o Significant changes were seen in the growth of
advertisements after the independence.
o 1945 – “Association of Advertising Agencies of
India”, formed to regulate the standards of
advertisements and initiate the interest among the
advertisers.
o 1952 – The Indian Society of Advertisers; to instill
the zeal among the Indian Advertisers.
11. Ads – considerable significance from the beginning
of 20th century.
Telecasting of programs and airing of commercials
on T.V – september 15th 1959 in Delhi.
Radio Advertising – All India Radio on 1st November
1967 in Bombay.
1976-77 was a crucial year, Doordarshan accepted
the advertisements.
Since 1991, the advertisement grew rapidly.
1994-95, T.V ads generated Rs 775 crore.
Opening up of economy – enabled Indian
advertisers to tie up with the foreign advertising
agencies.
With the advent of internet services, drastic
changes in the advertisement were seen.
12. Indian advertising scenario – dominated by HUL,
ITC, Colgate-Palmolive India, Nestle India, Dabur
India etc. for years.
Now changed, with advancement of technology and
communication.
