Advertising has existed in various forms for thousands of years, starting with messages on papyrus in Ancient Egypt and oral advertisements in Ancient China. In the 18th century, advertisements began appearing in newspapers in England to promote books and newspapers. Thomas Barrat is considered the "father of modern advertising" for his effective campaigns for Pears Soap in the 19th century using slogans and images. Major developments included the first paid newspaper advertisements in 1836, the establishment of the first advertising agency in 1840, radio advertisements in the 1920s, the rise of television advertising in the 1950s with commercial breaks, the growth of cable television advertising in the 1980s, and the emergence of internet advertising in the 1990s.
