People used news papers to illustrate about
their commercial establishments.
Earlier ads in news papers were of books,
marriage offers, travel ads and so on…..

3. Around 1840 several people started selling
space in news paper, later who developed
into AD AGENCIES.
The first ad in news paper was offering a
coffee in 1652 in England.

founded by VOLNEY PALMER IN 1841.

enhanced markets altered the relationship
between goods producer and user
created the need for advertising.
The need for communication is increased
because of mass production.
The other vehicles like Magazines, Radio,
TV, has made the advertising as a
profession.
5. By the end of 1920advertising is emerged
as a major industry.
Then the advertisers, copy writers, lay
outmen, artists , marketing experts started
wide range of advertising services.
In 1948 the advertising volume crossed $
1million.
6. In 1905 Advertising in India was started by
DATTARAM & COMPANY in Mumbai.
Recently we celebrated 100years of Indian
advertising.
In India 40 ad agencies are handling 80%
business with volume of 10,000 crores,
with150+ TV channels 135 Radio stations.
The foundations of advertising in India was laid
down by two English companies i.e. J.WALTER
THOMPSON & D.J.keymer’s.

• AAAI-advertising agencies association of
India.
• Ins- Indian newspapers society.
• IBS- Indian broadcasting society.
