2. Types of solid wastes
Broadly there are 3 types of solid waste
Household waste as municipal waste.
Hazardous industrial waste
Biomedical waste or hospital waste as infectious waste.
3. Household waste as municipal waste
Municipal wastes are the non-radioactive and non-hazardous solid
or semi-solid waste from household activities, restaurants, public
places, vegetable markets, hotels etc.
5. With rising urbanization and change in life
style, food and habits the amount of
municipal solid waste has been increasing
rapidly.
6. Hazardous industrial waste
In the industrial sector the major generators of hazardous waste are
the metal ,chemical, paper, pesticides, dye and rubber goods
industries.
Industrial waste is considered hazardous as they may contain toxic
substances
Hazardous waste could be highly toxic to humans ,animals, & plants.
Direct exposure to chemicals in hazardous waste such as mercury &
cyanide can be fatal.
7.
8. Biomedical waste or hospital waste
Bio-medical waste means “any waste which is generated by the
diagnosis, treatment or immunization of human beings or animals.
It may include waste like sharp waste pathological waste,
pharmaceutical waste, genotoxic waste ,chemical waste, & radio
active waste.
10. Collection of solid wastes
What is Waste Collection?
Waste collection is a part of the process of waste management. It is
the transfer of solid waste from the point of use and disposal to the
point of treatment or landfill.
Waste collection also includes the curbside collection of recyclable
materials that technically are not waste, as part of a municipal
landfill diversion program.
11. Classification of collection system
Based on the availability of service
1. House-to-House:
Waste collectors visit each individual house to collect garbage. The
user pays a fee for this service
12. 2. Community Bins:
Users bring their garbage to community bins that are placed at fixed
points in a neighborhood or locality. MSW is picked up by the
municipality, or its designate according to a
set schedule.
13. 3. Curbside Pick-Up:
Users leave their garbage directly outside their homes according to a
garbage pick-up schedule set with the local authorities (secondary house-
to-house collectors not typical)
14. 4. Self Delivered:
Generators deliver the waste directly to disposal sites or transfer stations,
or hire third-party operators (or the municipality).
15. Collection Methods
Based on mode of operation:
1. Hauled Container System
2. Stationary Container system
16. 1. Hauled Container System
An empty storage container (Known as a drop- off box) is hauled
to the storage site to replace the container that is full of waste , which is
then hauled to the processing point , transfer station or disposal site.
17.
18. 2. Stationary Container System
In this system, containers used for the storage of waste remain at the point of collection.
The collection vehicles generally stop alongside the storage containers, and collection
crews load the waste from the storage containers into the collection vehicles and then
transport the waste to the processing, transfer or disposal site.
