Brain Gain
UNLEASHING THE ERA OF INNOVATION
Countries worry about Brain Drain,
Are they clear about the concept of Brain Gain??
 Phenomenon which uses the potential of human
resource in this country to maximum and reverse
‘brain drain’.
 Increase in the realization of ability of
innovation and creativity.
 Thus, it is the retaining of brilliant minds and
giving them the opportunity to lead a better life
comparable to those which they can lead abroad.
Also, to give opportunities to the ones who are
already living and polish those who are latent.
Brain Gain
Upshots
 Brain Gain is the only way by which “India”
can be uplifted on a faster rate.
 Brain Gain can help India to be recognized
globally for its “brains”.
India
China
South
Korea
Japan
Germany
 India (9.1 percent), together with China (19.6 percent). South
Korea (9.2 percent), Japan (5.8 percent), and Germany (5.3
percent), these countries account for more than half of all
foreign scholars in the United States, according to IIE.
 This has resulted in critical shortage of skilled labor, thus leaving a void
in our workforce.
Today’s Scenario
 The no. of US Patents received by Indians/Indian companies
is quite low.
 This shows there is a lack of competitiveness at a global level,
this leads to lack in their ability remain viable in today’s times.
 New ideas are not met with enthusiasm and so are rejected as
impossible and unachievable.
 In this country, new ideas face lot of resistance and this makes
innovation at lower level unviable
 High School dropouts :
 There are high number of high school drop-outs in this country
which means we lose lot of talent in the very beginning.

Unemployable college graduates :
India has one of the very high number of
undergraduates, but there skillset remain obsolete thus
making them unemployable.
 Any new idea is susceptible to piracy in India and there are lack of rules
safeguarding the rights of the proprietor.
 This pervasive practice of patent infringement results in lower innovation. Also
patent infringement leads to uncontrolled distribution of content resulting in loss of
reward for proprietor .
 College graduates are still unaware of procedures related with Patents and
Copyrights.
 Today the innovative mind from anywhere in the country does not have the idea
of securing its idea by getting patents of it, instead the idea is being shared/sold
unofficially to a foreign country which uses the idea and commercializes it.
 This causes the idea to be uprooted from a country and reaches to one which
works for its awareness and gets the fame.
 Huge section of educated class is still digitally illiterate.
 Due to this we still have a huge amount of population which is
unable to use digital services, which are fast and effective in
comparison to conventional methods.
 Schools are very technologically backward which has led
to unawareness about advancement in education.
 Schools in India are technically backward that causes the
students to be unaware about the current affairs of the country.
 School teachers are made to serve as volunteers in Election
Commission work.
 This results in non functioning of schools during election
times.
 Teachers are made to go in remote areas for Indian census
duties and polling booths which is unsafe for women teachers.
Indian Education System
 6,50,000 villages
 3 million panchayat members.
 40% population is B.P.L
 25-30% is illiteracy rate
 Almost 90% Indian population are
unaware of digital world. (NDLM STATS.)
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s
(BMC) move to depute 13,000 primary
school teachers in the city on Census duty
will badly affect the studies of more than 30
lakh students.
(Prajakta Chavan, Hindustan Times Mumbai,
February 02, 2011)
Awakening : Ideas for a change
High School Enrollment :
 India should have a
comprehensive gov’t school
system.
 Emphasis should be placed
on child to continue his/her
education and means should
be provided for him/her to
meet his/her expenditure.
 Virtual Classroom should be
assembled for students who
live in remote places like
north east.
 Students should be
trained specifically for
industry so that they
can be employed.
 Industry and people
who have experience
with industry should
be involved in
structuring the
curriculum.
 Internet sites such as torrents, internet
download managers must be banned
and all the online video streaming
should be done on subscription basis.
 Rules, Regulation and Protocols must
be placed against piracy such as
cancellation of licenses.
 Video rental shops must be setup and
loose sale of bootlegged DVD’s on
footpaths and markets should be
banned.
 Internet websites which provide
passwords, keys and fake softwares
should be tracked and inspected, and
if found guilty they should be
fined/temporarily suspended or both.
Employability of undergraduates : Tackling the menace of piracy :
Manufacturing Industry in
India:
 Industrial manufacturing
should be brought in this
country instead of just
assembling the products.
 Big industrial houses must be
allowed to enter the key areas
such as defense projects and
must be given tax breaks to
invest more in research and
development.
 Research Development in
general must be encouraged
as it will bring more technical
know how in this country.
 Small start-ups should be
given incentives if they get
involved in innovative
projects.
Level playing field for all
students:
 Students all over the
country must be
provided with digital
resources so that they
can be at par with
students who may not
be getting that good
education.
 E-Library and
community Wi-Fi
should be setup so that
students have access to
information.
Giving Value to Arts and
Literature
 Arts and literature education should
be given a boost.
 Gov’t should fund more arts and
literature festivals in this country.
 Writers and Painters should be
given some financial help if they
need to translate their writings into
play or if they need to exhibit their
paintings.
 It should be ensured that no
writer/painter or any other art
person live a life in destitute just
because of his profession.
 More theatres should be set up so
that more plays can be played.
Nationalized Alumni to enhance the
Innovation
Nationalized Alumni :
Measures Taken After Effects
1. Forming a Cabinet It must consist of qualified professionals and reputed managers which
will help the innovations all over the country to reap.
2. Innovation Centers in Colleges Establishing small units in the colleges of specific trades will help the
students to get an easy access with the community and get funded or
realized about their innovations.
3. Recognition by Government Funding of the innovations , ideas and the technical works in progress
must be funded through the
Government’s budget like the government institutes are helped
financially.
4. Alignment with Industries The industries in the particular fields of R&D or a dept. of development
in them must be made aware of the innovations by the Alumni so that the
ideas are absorbed too.
‘Cloud Campus’ to gather all the ideas and
ideals at a single site
Cloud Connectivity :
“Say goodbye to the traditional way of studying and enter to a whole
new world of studying at the NIIT Cloud Campus” (NIIT Campus quote)
Cloud
Connectivity
benefits
To provide a number of thinkers
to Assemble, connect and interact
with each other about their
technical philosophies and can be
helped, provide help and can be
directed by the experts all over the
world about their Innovations
being at their own place
Having a single place to talk
will avoid the possibility of
redundancy of the ideas and
will make aware of the level the
country has reached in its
development to escape wastage
of time working at the same
level instead should work above
that.
Future focused Education and Transformation of
outnumbered colleges to limited courses colleges
Transformation of Colleges :
Decrement of
seats
1. Government should transform state running institutes which have outnumbered graduates production and
face lack in their absorption.
2. Instead they can be converted into colleges providing courses which are huge in demand but their graduates
still less in numbers.
3. Seats In the colleges must be in the proportion of the vacancies available in the industry.
Future Focused
Education
System
1. Students in middle/high schools should be given a chance to select the subject they want to study and
desire to pursue a career. To avoid the demission of interest towards studies in the student.
2. Opening a number of fields for the students will help them to realize the inner talent in them and will
help in their self exploration. Out of the conventional studying subjects like Science, Maths and
Commerce etc.
3. Which help the country to get professionals in even those fields which are neglected today by the society.
Miscellaneous solutions: things at par
 Indian people get influenced from the NEWS media
or Indian Cinema easily, so creative content must be
broadcasted.
 They must be given the awareness about the
achievements in the country and appreciation about
the new innovation.
 Recognized faces must be asked for the help to
promote creative thinking and must encourage the
anti-piracy campaigns.
 Documentary production must be stimulated so as to
promote social messages across the country.
 Connectivity and fulfilling the power requirements of
smaller cities and remote areas must be a prior step.
 Development of smaller cities will help in retaining the
innovations over there and help us harvest the brains from
even the remote areas.
Succor from Indian Cinema and Media Connectivity and development of remote areas
