1. IAN McCRACKEN: CV March 2016
Personal Summary
I have over 35 years experience in the Upstream Oil industry with BP and as a technical
consultant, having worked in Global Operations, Projects and in R&D. During this time
I have developed expertise in production chemistry, flow assurance and other fluids
related issues that can impact hydrocarbon production and water injection. Specifically I
have assessed the threats of and developed strategies to manage scale, wax, asphaltenes,
hydrates, naphthenates, emulsions, foaming, reservoir souring, high viscosity fluids/gels
and solids in injection water systems.
Career History, Roles & Responsibilities
January 2015 -present day: Senior technical consultant to Kuwait Oil Company
• Support management in building long term capability within KOC to generate and interpret
the fluids data that ensures future oil and gas production targets can be met
• Minimising production losses through effective management of scale, asphaltenes and iron
sulphide solids, and improving oil/water/gas separation performance
April 2014-November 2014: Senior Production Chemist, CIC, Upstream Engineering, BP
• Provide production chemistry consultancy to BP’s Upstream Engineering group with
special focus on fluids issues in reservoir and wells and managing production chemistry related
threats in operating assets and new projects
• Update existing practices and write new practices and guidelines documents to ensure
production chemistry activities meet technical and business expectations
• Lecture in technical courses in house and externally to promote awareness of production
chemistry principles
• Act as global production chemistry consultant in Integrated Fluids Reviews to ensure
projects design on the whole range of fluids properties
2011-March 2014: Advisor, Production Chemistry Management, Base Management, BP
• Develop, issue and implement a strategy for providing future production chemistry support
in Reservoir Developments Division
• Provide production chemistry support on reservoir and well related fluids threats to BP’s
Global Reservoir Development Division to ensure that threats are understood and that the
barriers in place to manage threats are robust against current and future plans
• Embed production chemistry principles into reservoir and wells processes and integrate
production chemistry activities into Base Management and Subsurface disciplines
• Update production chemistry material in subsurface learning offerings such as water
injection, well performance and surveillance courses
• Create and pilot a production chemistry healthcheck process for operating regions
2007-2011: Senior Production Chemist, Upstream Engineering Centre, BP
• Identify production chemistry user requirements and development needs for BP global
Integrated Fluids DataBase initiative
• Manage technical bid evaluation for chemical services contracts for Angola and Azerbaijan
• Develop and present production chemistry material at flow assurance, complex fluids and
separation fundamentals courses
• Contribute to writing and provide technical and editorial oversight of production chemistry
related Technical Practices
• Embed production chemistry requirements into the Integrated Fluids Review process for
global projects
2. 1995-2006: Senior Production Chemist, Exploration & Production Technology Division and
Upstream Technology Centre, BP
• Provide consultancy on well sampling and analysis programmes for BP developments such
ACG, BTC, SD, WND, Angola Blocks 18 and 31
• Establish safe operating limits to avoid wax deposition and cold restart concerns for the
BTC pipeline
• Assess production chemistry threats from 3rd party Keith subsea tieback to Bruce platform
• Promote the importance of production chemistry in BP operating regions and global
projects
• Work with chemical service providers to identify and optimize chemical solutions to
production chemistry problems in BP’s global operations
• Act as stand in Production Chemistry Technical Authority for BP Azerbaijan Business Unit
during maternity leave of position holder
• Mentor and support junior production chemists and engineers in BP Upstream Segment
• Project manage DART and Waxattack JIP’s involving other major operators and service
companies for BP to progress fundamental understanding of wax and asphaltene precipitation
mechanisms and the mechanisms of effective chemicals
1986-1995: Production Chemist, Shared Petrotechnical Resource and Exploration & Production
Technology Division, BP
• Act as production chemistry consultant to BP New Development projects
• Develop and carry out welltest and downhole sampling programmes to ensure appropriate
samples are available to determine all Flow Assurance and Production Chemistry threats and that
the threats are considered in design options for wells, flowlines, facilities and export routes
• Assist in defining and writing production chemistry sections in Project Basis of Design and
Statement of Requirement documentation for new projects
• Manage and deliver BP’s production chemistry in house courses
• Optimise chemical programmes to minimize Opex without compromise of BP’s HSE
principles
• Contribute to the Miller scale inhibitor development programme by investigating
fundamental mechanisms of scale inhibitor activity
• Lead R&D programmes in overcoming wax threats for deepwater developments
1982-1986: Team Leader in Speciality Products Branch, BP
• Run a small team engaged in fundamental R&D into surfactant based EOR. Aims were to
develop new surfactant structures that enabled improved mobility of residual oil trapped in
reservoir pores, thereby increasing total recovery from mature reservoir
1980-1982: Research Chemist, Fuels Branch
• Complete R&D programmes in maintaining octane rating without added lead compounds
by blending different refinery streams or by addition of oxygenated chemicals such as alcohols
or ethers
1976-1980: BP Sponsored Student
• Completed BSc hons degree (grade 2:1) in Applied Chemistry at Kingston Polytechnic
