4. Two
Formats
 The IELTS test has two formats:
 (1) Academic
 (2) General Training
 The Academic test is for higher
studies in English-speaking
colleges and universities.
 The General Training test is for
immigration purposes.

5. Four
Modules
 The IELTS test (Academic and General Training ) is
divided into four modules:
Listening Reading
Writing Speaking
The Listening and Speaking modules are exactly
the same for Academic and General Training tests
but the Reading and Writing modules are different.

6. Listening
There are 4 parts/sections in the Listening module.
In total there are 40 questions. (10 questions in each part)
The module lasts for 40 minutes. 30 minutes for the test and 10
minutes after the test for transferring answers on an answering
sheet.

‘Sections’ is changed to ‘Parts’ –
The paper-based test will now
be divided into Part 1, 2, 3, 4.
The Part 1 example is also
removed.

7. Reading
IELTS General Introduction
The Reading module has 3 sections.
The Academic test has three long text passages.
In the General Training test, the first section has two or three short texts. The
second section has two short texts and the final section has one long text passage.
In total there are 40 questions. (11-14 questions in each section)
The time allowed is 1 hour. (suggested time for each section is approx. 20
minutes.)

8. Writing
The Writing module is divided into 2 tasks - Task 1 and Task 2.
Task 1 (Academic) - Describing a graph/map/diagram.
Task 1 ( General Training) - Writing a letter (formal or informal).
Task 2 – Essay writing. (It is the same for both Academic and General
Training tests.)
The time allowed is 1 hour. (Suggested time for Task 1 is 20 minutes
and for Task 2 is 40 minutes.)

9. Speaking
The Speaking module has 3 parts.
Part 1 – Introduction and general questions. 4-5 minutes.
Part 2 – Individual long talk on a given topic. 1-2 minutes.
Part 3 - Two-way discussion. 3 - 4 minutes.
Total 10-14 minutes.

10. IELTS 9-band Scale
You will be given a score from 1 to 9 for each part of
the test – Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.
The overall band score is the average of all four
modules.
You can score whole (e.g., 5.0, 6.0, 7.0) or half (e.g.,
5.5., 6.5, 7.5) bands in each module of the test.
IELTS scores are valid for two years.

11. IELTS General Introduction
The Overall Band Score is the average of the four component scores, rounded to the nearest
whole or half band. The component scores are weighted equally.

Total of the
four individual

Band score
Example 1 6.5 6.5 5.0 7.0 6.25 6.5
Example 2 4.0 3.5 4.0 4.0 3.875 4.0
Example 3 6.5 6.5 5.5 6.0 6.125 6.0
If the average of the four components ends in .25, the Overall Band Score is rounded up to the next
half band, and if it ends in .75, the Overall Band Score is rounded up to the next whole band.

12. Band scores and skill levels:
Band 5 • Modest user
Band 6 • Competent user
Band 7 • Good user
Band 8 • Very good user
Band 9 • Expert user
