The storyboard shows that the narrative of my short film conforms to the Narrative Structure Theory
by Todorov. Scene 1 suggests that whilst ‘Equilibrium’ occurs, there will be some disruption due to
Jade hiding her sexuality. This is then evident in scene 2 whereby Jade attempts to keep this secret.
Scene 3 then demonstrates stages 3 and 4 of the theory which suggests that recognition of the
disruption occurs before an attempt to repair the disruption. This is evident in scene 3 when Jade
decides to write a letter to tell her mum about her sexuality. However, scenes 4 and 5 then suggest
that another disruption occurs, therefore contrasting from Todorov’s theory. Further disruptions then
take place later in scene 5 and 6, including the news that Jade’s mum is actually alive and that the
mum she thought she had was in fact her adoptive mother. The film ends back at stage 3 of the
theory, whereby disruption is recognised by the characters but is not yet resolved.
4. Kieran Morris
The film doesn’t fully conform to Todorov’s narrative structure due to the genre of drama/social-
realism being associated with many plot twists in films. I added further disruption in order to keep the
story engaging for the potential target audience. Despite this, if the film then showed life after the
events of the film; Jade and Millie would most likely achieve a state of ‘equilibrium’ and therefore
reach stage 5 of Todorov’s theory.
