2. WIND ENERGY
20XX 2
• A popular, sustainable, renewable energy
source
• Has a much smaller impact on the
environment than burning fossil fuels
• Historically, wind power has been used in
sails, windmills and windpumps
• Use of wind turbines to generate electricity
• Wind turbine - a device that converts the
kinetic energy of wind into electrical energy
3. WIND FARM
20XX 3
• Wind turbines clustered together in what
is known as a wind farm
• Usually located on top of a mountain or in
a windy place in order to take advantage
of natural winds
• Onshore wind farms – land-based wind
power facility
• Offshore wind farms – wind farms in large
bodies of water, usually the sea

5. WIND ENERGY VARIABILITY AND
STORAGE
20XX 5
• Wind-generated power is a variable
resource
• Electricity production on wind speeds, air
density, and turbine characteristics etc.
• Too low wind speed vs too high wind speed
• With no energy storage capability, this
requires the turbines to be slowed
• Wind-generated power can be stored to be
used during periods of lower wind or higher
demand.

6. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS OF WIND
ENERGY
20XX 6
• Land use – wind farms typically need to be
spread over more land than other power
stations
• Wildlife and habitat – bird and bat deaths
from collisions with wind turbines
• Public health and community – sound
generated by wind turbines
• Visual impacts - wind farms spoiling
protected scenic areas, natural landscapes
7. WIND ENERGY IN PAKISTAN
20XX 7
• Wind power makes up more than 6% of the
total electricity production in the country
• The government planned to add around 3.5
GW of wind energy capacity by 2018
• As of 2013, the Jhimpir wind corridor in
Sindh was identified as the most lucrative
site for wind power plants (Wind Power Potential
Survey of Coastal Areas of Pakistan, 2013, PMD)
Jimphir Wind Corridor, identified as potential
area for wind power projects
