• Wind power has been used as long as
people have been using sails on boats.
Farmers have used wind power to
machines that grind grain and pump water
for millenniums. Windmills helped to pump
water to arid regions so that crops could be
grown and water could be provided for live
stock.

•Wind energy: wind being used to generate mechanical power
or electricity
•Wind turbines convert the kinetic energy in the wind into
mechanical power
•The wind turns the blades of the turbines, which spins a shaft,
which connects to a generator and makes electricity
•Wind farms: wind turbines grouped into a single wind power
plant and generates bulk electrical power
The Parts
Tower:
- Usually made of steel, hollow with a ladder inside that leads to the nacelle
Nacelle:
- Usually made of fiberglass and holds all the turbine machinery
Blades:
- made from reinforced carbon-fiber plastics, similar to an airplane wing
Sensors:
- found in the nacelle, and measures wind direction, speed and temperature.
Types of turbines:
•Horizontal axis
•Vertical axis
Size and Power
*Varies in size
Biggest:
•up to 20 building stories high and blades the length of the football
field
•produces enough energy for up to 1,400 homes.
Smallest:
•between 8 to 25 feet in diameter and stands about 30 feet high
•can produce all power needed for all-electric home.

•Wind occurs as a result of the Sun's ability to unevenly heat
the Earth's atmosphere and surface. As hot air rises, cooler air
sinks.
•Wind turbines convert the winds kinetic energy into
mechanical power.
•Without a generator this power can be used to pump water or
to run mills.
•With a generator it can be used to convert the winds kinetic
energy into electricity.

The main goal: to create sustainable energy
The process of harvesting wind energy creates jobs,
economic investment, and clean energy
Impact
• - Wind power is a clean fuel source
• - Sustainable
• - Cost effective
• - Benefits the economy in rural areas
Advantages
• Never-ending, renewable source of
energy
• Low maintenance costs
• Beneficial to the environment, clean
source of energy

Disadvantages
• Initial manufacturing and installing price
• Lack of technological perfection - meaning that
with new technology in the industry, costs
would be lower, lessen environmental
impacts, and so on
• Turbine noise can be an annoyance to
residents near wind fields
• Finding and being able to use the land that
you find to set up these wind farms is difficult

Wind Energy Today
• Wind energy is commonly used for
generating electricity, charging batteries,
pumping water, and grinding grain. Most
wind energy technologies can be used as
stand-alone applications or can be
connected to a utility power grid.
