2. Process â Experiment 1
My first experiments are related to the film poster that I will be creating alongside the trailer. I
have decided to look at this first because I feel like this needs more planning because I am
wanting to use effects that I have never used before whereas with the video I am comfortable
working in that format and have a good idea as to what to do in post production.
My original idea, was the idea of having a dark
background with a gradient effect. To do this I made the
whole page black and then went to the filter section and
chose the filter âBas reliefâ, I like the gradient effect
because it breaks up the page and if I was to have the title
at the top of the page it would stand out more because it
would be white against black
Having the white title on top of the black makes it stand
out which is something I like. However it was to âclearâ and
I wanted the title to look a little off so I rasterized the text
and then using the selection tool I highlighted the bit I
wanted to move and then moved it slightly to the left. I
did this for most of the text and I like this effect because it
creates a sense something isnât right and that is what I
want the person to feel looking at this
3. I found an image off of the internet and using the magic
selection tool I cut out the woman and deleted the
background. I then went up to images and chose the
âdesaturationâ option to make the image black and white
because I think it works better with the background. I
decided that it didnât look right because it was too plain,
so I duplicated image and right clicked to select
âblending optionsâ I then clicked on the âRâ so that only
the blue and green colours were active
I moved the image slightly to the left and then enlarged
it. This created a glitch effect which I think is quite
effective because creates another person whilst blending
into the other. I think the glitch effect works well with
the title because that resembles a glitch because it
doesnât join up
4. I decided to select sections of the face and move
them away, I chose to do this because I like the
way it looks and emphasise the theme of the
glitch effect, I used the selection tool then on the
remaining layer I used the eraser tool so it blends
in with he background
Overall I like this experiment because it has
given me a general idea as to what I want to
do with it, however I want the design to be
more complex and a little busier because I
think at the moment is it quite plain,
however in particular the glitch effect is
something that I like the idea of using
because it will look quite good if done with
the images I will take
5. Process â Experiment 2
My next experiment is going to be trying a double exposure effect because I think this would be
good to demonstrate the different personalities by having them blend in together. I tried doing
it without a video to help however I couldnât get it right so I went onto YouTube and found
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iOYz669WNpU] a quick video which showed me how to do
it.
The first thing I did was copy and paste two images
onto a Photoshop document. I then used the selection
tool on the model to outline her face and then I right
clicked to access the feather option and set it to 0.5
Using âctrl Jâ it created a new layer just of the selected
area, which allowed me to delete the original. I then
used the crop tool to enlarge the workspace so I have
more room to work with. I also made the other layer
hidden so I didnât get too confused as to which I was
working with
6. I desaturated the image by using âCtrl shift Uâ or you
could go up to the image section in the toolbar and
choose the desaturation option. I then opened the
second image I would be working with, and changed the
opacity down to around 50% because this will allow me
to place the image in the place I want it
I used âctrl Tâ and then right clicked to access some
movements I could do with the image, I tired to
flip it to see if it fit better however it didnât so I left
it how it was
I changed the opacity of the image back to 100%,
then using the âctrlâ button I clicked on the model
layer so it highlighted the bit I selected earlier
7. I then clicked on the other layer of the woman
and then chose the layer mask option at the
bottom of the page and this put the image I
had selected into the space that was selected
I duplicated the model layer, and set it above
the other woman layer. I then right clicked and
chose blending options and set it to lighten, I
think this worked well however I think the
other image wasnât in the right position
because it didnât line up the way I wanted to,
however I think the general idea of it would be
a good idea accompanied by the glitch effect
I tried recreating the glitch effect as well as the
double exposure, however it didnât work as
well as when I did it before and I think it is
because there are too many layers and it
doesnât work. So in my final project I think I
will pick either one and not combine them
8. Process â Experiment 3
My third experiment idea is to make a horror poster on Photoshop, however I am not aiming
it towards my project although I think it will be a good idea to just to recreate one so I went
onto YouTube and found a video [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LcSkwwAZvK0&t=40s ]
The first thing I did was save an image off of google
then open a new Photoshop document, then under
files I chose the place embedded option which then
imported the image directly onto the file. I used the
shift key to position the image to how I wanted it to
be then I embedded another image from google and
put it over the top
The video told me to set it to âsoft lightâ however
the image I chose it made no difference so I
changed it to âlightenâ because it allowed the image
to be seen a little bit
9. I added a colour adjustment layer and altered some
of the settings different to the video because I chose
different images. I mainly altered the yellow and the
red to get more of an orange colour that looked
darker than what it was. I also changed the opacity
of the yellow layer so I could see the blue photo
more clearly. I also altered the curve which changed
the darkness of the image
I then used âshift ctrl alt Eâ which made a layer based
off of everything. I then went up to filter and chose
style then went onto âoil paintâ and changed some
of the settings, this didnât change the picture that
visibly however I followed the videos instructions
but I think it is because I used different images
10. I embedded another picture and lined it up with one
of the guides I set up, I used the same image of the girl
as the video because I think it will help when using
effects later on
I added a layer mask and selected it, I then chose a
paint brush in black and changed the opacity to 100% I
then painted round the girl similar to the video
I used a different paintbrush to make the edges less
refined, I then added a vibrance adjustment layer and
changed the vibrance to +56 and the saturation to +7. I
then added a brightness/contrast layer and changed
the brightness to -37 and the contrast to 34
11. I opened up a picture of an art statue and
using the quick selection tool I outlined the
statue to separate it from the background. I
added a layer mask which allowed me to
transfer the image onto the page I was
working on, I then positioned it to fit with the
face of the girl and changed the opacity down
to 43% to position it then changed it back up
to 73% so it was more visible but could still see
the girl behind it.
I added a layer mask and did the same thing
with the paint brushes as before and it
removed half of the statues face to reveal the
girls face. I then continued to do that until
part of the neck was only visible, I then
added a brightness/contrast layer again and
made it -89 on the brightness level and 44 on
the contrast level
Towards the end of the video the person starts to use brushes
that I didnât have access to so I had to improvise and I left it at this
because I didnât see the need to add a title etc. Overall I like this
idea however I donât think it fits for what my trailer is about but I
have learnt different techniques that I could use in future
projects, for example the brightness and contrast layers
12. Experiment 4 - Sound
The next experiment is going to be looking at sound and for this I am going to be using beep box
which is an online website that I can experiment with to create different sounds and change the
pitch and the pace.
Firstly I am experimenting using orchestral sounds because
these were the most common throughout each trailer that I
researched. I used a violin and orchestra 1 I put the violin at
the top because I wanted this to have a higher pitch and I
put the orchestra sound at the bottom to contrast with the
high pitch. I think it made a nice rhythm however it sounds
to electronic and that isnât what I was aiming for. I then
added orchestral sounds 2 to a different section and I put it
in the middle and at the bottom so the pitch wasnât too high
but I wanted there to also be a lower pitch. I thought this
would even out the electronic sound but it didnât so this is
something I will have to figure out in future. I exported the
sound and it is quite repetitive throughout so I donât think I
will use these instruments in the final project
13. I then tried to do a suspenseful part and for this I used
strings and then right at the end the pitch was the highest,
like the other sound this sounded electronic and not how I
wanted it to sound. I then changed the sound from strings
to something called bandoneon and it changed it slightly
and I think if it was accompanied by other sounds it
wouldnât sound too bad. So this is something to consider
when doing my final project
I changed the instrument to flute and I like this instrument
because it doesnât sound too electronic, I alternated the
pitch between the highest and the lowest (Right) and I think
it sounds ok however you canât really hear the low pitch so I
then decided to get rid of the highest pitch (Left) and it
sounds better because it is slowly building up tension and it
is something that is stereotypical in horror films so this is
something to consider when doing my project. Overall I
donât want the sound to be too complicated as long as it
created tension
14. Experiment 5 - Video
I have decided to do a quick experiment on the use of colour throughout a video, and I might try
masking a few things because I think it will come in use for my future project.
Firstly I wanted to experiment using different shades of
blue because this is a common colour that was used
quite a lot throughout each trailer I studied. I used the
colour wheels to make most of it blue then focused on
the curves, the white was the only one that was higher
than the rest due to this being if it was too low then you
wouldnât be able to see the image
I experimented with the masking to make the platform
red when the candle was on it and white when it
wasnât, this worked effectively and is something that I
would want to use in the final project. Overall I havenât
done many experiments with Premier because I feel
comfortable working with it and I know where I want to
go with my project and there isnât anything that I donât
know how to do, whereas with Photoshop there were
effects that I wanted to use but wasnât sure how to do
them
15. Reflection
What elements of your experiments will you include in your final product?
I have approached the experiments planning to include as many as possible, in particular I
want to include the glitch effect because I like the way it looks and it can have multiple
connotations, for example it could represent that something isnât right with the character
which is causing them to glitch, it also shows multiple images of the character which could
suggest there is more than one version of that character. Although with this effect I would
want to combine it with the double exposure effect however I attempted this in the
experiments and it didnât work the way I wanted it to so if I did this in the final project I
would attempt it again and if it didnât work I would just use it on its own. I experimented
with the title in one of the experiments where I moved them so it wasnât out of place and I
liked this idea because it works well with the glitch effect however I donât know if some
people would find it too hard to read so this is something I would have to consider when
doing my project. Additionally on this experiment I took sections of the models face and
moved them away and this is something that I like because it breaks up the character into
pieces which could imply there is more to the character than you think. One experiment I
wont be using will be the horror poster where I followed a video and this is because it
doesnât seem relevant to what I want to create however some of the brushes I used to
improvise with were a good effect and this is something I might use in future projects. In
regards to the sound not much of it worked the way I wanted it to apart from the flute on
the lowest pitch because it slightly built tension up and this is something I would like to
continue with in the final project, furthermore I used the masking technique in Premier
which is something that I want to include in my final product because I think it looks
effective accompanied by a black and white video
