Thomas Moore conducted several experiments with typography and photo manipulation in Photoshop to develop styles for a 1990s Japanese car magazine. In the first experiment, he warped text to increase in size from left to right. In the second, he styled Japanese text with bevel and emboss effects to look chrome. In the third and favorite, he layered colored text of "Hellboy" and blurred the layers to create a melting effect. For photography experiments, he added glitch and distortion effects and adjusted colors to achieve 1980s feels. He reflected that he will incorporate plastic textures, typography effects, and color/filter adjustments in his final magazine product.
2. Process
This is my first experiment that I have done ready
for my final piece because I am doing a magazine
for my final piece I wanted to experiment with
typography on photoshop and mess around with
the tools to see what I could create. On this slide I
have gone with the text Big Apple and I started
off by making the background black and typing
out the text in the font that I have chosen I then
merged the two texted so I could move and warp
them together. I them warped the so that the
text gets bigger as it goes to the right you can see
this best in the apple text after I had the text at
the right shape so that the big was small and the
apple was big warping and getting bigger I
duplicating the layer and put it behind the white
text I then made the copy blue and used the
arrows to move it right slightly so the text looked
like it has a blue outline on one side. This effect
adds to the 3D feel of the text it is very simple
and has a simple black background but having the
bright white tone with the bright blue colour
underneath really pops on the black and almost
gives it a fading effect.
3. Process
This is the second experiment that I have done
and the big difference that you can see straight
away is that it is in Japanese and the reason why I
did this is because the style of magazine I want to
create is a 90s Japanese styled car magazine. How
I created this text style Is I started by copy and
pasting the Japanese writing onto a black
background and making it a big bold font then I
opened the blending options for the text and
chose bevel and emboss and gave it that liquid
iron look like the text is chrome and I faded it so
that the edges weren’t too sharp and then I added
a inner shadow so that the text looks like it was 3D
after that I added a gradient overlay and thats
where I added the white to black tone and
changed the angle of it so that it looked like the
black is cutting through the middle of the text. I
liken this effect of the text because once again it is
simple but very effective and with the colour split
that I added at the end really makes it blend in
with the background but also stands out because
of the chrome glow that it has.
4. Process
This is my third and final experiment and I believe
that this is my favourite one out of all the three
that I have done. I started off with this one by
have once again a black background which is a
good canvas to start on then I added a image or
plastic texture and faded is so that it blended with
the background and gave it that rough look on the
background I then measured out my page and
found out the centre of my page and added the
hellboy text I then duplicated the text 3 times and
chose the same font for all three and chose three
colours that blended well and this was red, yellow
and orange I then put the red at the front of them
because the hell in hellboy red is the best colour
to fit that I then moved the orange two steps right
and the yellow two steps left and then I used the
blur tool to blur and fade to yellow and orange so
that it looked like the red text had a glow to the
back of it after that I added a very thin white
outline to the red text so it didn’t look blurred as-
well I then used the liquid tool and wrapped and
stretched the text and thats how I got the melting
effect that you can see but not too much to the
point where you cant read the text. This is my
favourite one because I love the effect that the
plastic effect does to the background and how
much the colours work together in the whole
image.
5. This is my first photography experiment the original
image that I have used is not my own image but I
have definitely added my own twist onto the image
I first started off by making the image black and
white and then duplicated the layer and unticked
the red box on the adjutants tab so that the second
layer has that blue red colour to it then moved the
background to the left to distort them so it gave the
image that glitch effect. I like this experiment that I
have done and I think that it is one of the best
experiments that I have done and the reason for
that is because its simple to make but can have a
big affect and I really like the glitch effect that the
image gives off.
6. This is the second experiment that I did and like the
first one I have gone for the glitch effect but with
this I have gone for a more bright image so the
effect isn’t as in your face as the first one also after
editing I selected parts of the image with the select
tool and made them move left or right to give a
really good distorted affect on the image as you can
see I also added bit of adjustments to the brightness
and saturation of the image to give it a real 80s feel
to the whole image I did that to the image because
my whole theme for my magazine. I like this
experiment because of the feel that it gives off and I
think this could be used in my magazine also I like
how simple but effective this style off editing is it
doesn’t take very long at all to learn but can
completely change a image and change the mood
and vibe if the image.
7. This is the sixth experiment that I did and
this one is also not my image but the
reason I picked it is because this photo is
from the 80s and from Japan which is
where my magazine is set for this photo I
made it black and white and then added
filters to it and adjusted the saturation and
brightness to really make the 80s feel of
the image pop out of the photo and then I
added the black like over the guys eyes to
give it a mystery feel and because it
thought it was cool to add. This experiment
will help me in my finale product because I
have learned how to create a theme with
editing and it’s the theme that I want to use
in my magazine and this will help me do
that.
8. Reflection
• What elements of your experiments will you
include in your final product?
• — the elements of my experiments that I will include in my final piece is I will
definitely be using one of these effects to create a title for my final piece and
will use the plastic effect for my front cover background and some images that
I have inside the magazine. I will be using most of the techniques that I have
learnt in doing my experiments and I believe that in learning these techniques I
will be able to produce a better magazine and be able to really target my
audience.
