Primary Research Summary: Results gathered from all three experiments
EXPERIMENT ONE:
CAMERA IN PLAIN SIGHT WITHOUT SIGN – CONDUCTED:08/11/2016
Question One: Did you feel like your privacy was being invaded?
Comments made regarding results:
-Information regarding the experiment and whether the students and teachers felt violated to an extent to understand their
overall thoughts and understanding of the project.
-Students nor teachers didn’t feel like their privacy was being intruded upon, and thought that thepurposeof the camera
being there was part of a school project. In fact many invited the camera into their lives by actively engaging with it. Many
didn’t feel like their privacy was being invaded and simply ignored it. Others who noticed the camera did try and conceal
faces but didn’t put up an argument regarding why I was recording them, showing acceptable and theinability to stop me
recording them, indicating that although aware of surveillance happening around them, they have accepted it.
Question Two: Did you feel safe with the camera recording your movements?
Comments made regarding results:
-Many subjects felt safe knowing that a form of surveillance was watching them, indicating that perhaps they were more
deterred from misbehaving, knowing that something is recording their actions, showing an altering change in behaviour
amongst my subjects.
-The subjects who said no within their responses goes on to say that they have more or less just ignored the camera despiteit
being within plain sight. They believe that it’s there for an intended purposeand that they should carry on as normal.
Question Three: Would you prefer your face to be edited out from thefootage?
Comments made regarding results:
-Many didn’t view it as a massive problem overall and was rather accepting of the camera into their lives-in fact even
coming right up to it and speaking directly into the lens, indicating a sense and form of acceptance within this.
-A small amount of peoplethat completed thequestionnaire stated that they would of felt more comfortable with their faces
edited out, concealing their trueidentity, however this was not a big issue to them considering there is many forms of
surveillance out their capturing their faces daily they said-again showing another form of acceptance within their lives.
Question Four: Did you notice thecamera straight away?
Comments made regarding results:
-Some commented how they failed to notice thecamera straight off, which was interesting as it was in plain sight situated at
one of the busiest points of theschool throughout the Lunch period. Indicating that the camera is easy to not see, suggesting
forms of surveillance is like that too where it doesn’t intrude massively upon people’s lives but it is still omnipresent.
- Others said that they could not see it due to thecrowds around the camera which were stirring up interest which than made
them want to see what they were looking at to understand what was going on.
-Many commented upon how easy it was for us to all be surveyed due to how easy it was to conceal a camera and record
their movements, they said how it has opened their minds more to surveillance and the fact that they could be watched at any
point of time and day.
Question Five: Are you comfortable with being watched?
Comments made regarding results:
-Many did not seem fazed by the fact I was recording them. In fact many took great delight in actively engaging with the
camera by speaking to it, playing with it and performing tricks in front with the added enjoyment of knowing that the camera
is watching their movements consistently throughout this period.
- The small amount seemed weirded about, especially upon having thelack of knowledge of where this footage was going-
upon telling them that this is intended for a school purposeproject they werea little scared as to what teachers could see this
and if they would be in trouble with the actions performed in front of thecamera.
Question Six: Do you know where this footage is going?
Comments made regarding results:
-Many did not have any knowledge of where this footage was going, yet were still happy to actively engage with it. But it
gave them an idea as to who could really be watching, and for what multiple purposes could this be for exactly? They didn’t
have an idea of where the footage could be going, yet still felt accepting of this fact to allow the camera into their lives.
-Some predicted that as the camera was spotted at school, that it could perhaps be for a school project, but again, they were
not exactly sure for what exact purposethecamera was there for and where the footage could possibly go after.
