Film as a Medium of Mass
Communication
Owing to its wide presence to a massive audience, a
film is a mass medium. One of the film's main
motivations is to pay attention to the viewer. It is not
as immediate as newspapers, television or radio, but
over a long period of time it reaches a significant
number of people. The viewer forgets the outside world
once inside the darkened theatres; they become
hostage to the film's charm. All documentary,
educational, functional, informative and advertising
cinemas refer to films. Thanks to its wider format, the
film is a perfect medium of entertainment, instruction
and persuasion (from 16mm, 35mm, 70mm
cinemascope to the most recent I-max format).

Cont.
• Cinema is a potent medium of mass communication.
Through this medium, different people like the
producer, director, story or scriptwriter and
songwriter, want to communicate with the masses.
• It is a collaborative medium that has the potential to
reach a varied audience.
• Filmmakers produce films for masses, not for
individuals. In a single cinema hall, hundreds of
people can enjoy a movie.
• Language is not a barrier as far as cinema is
concerned.
• Cinema has its grammar. The nature of cinema
makes it a more robust mass medium; with low
literacy rates, cinema as a medium of mass

Cont.
Cinema has a magnetic hold on the mind of
the audience. Cinema is also a medium of
non-verbal communication. In other words,
cinema speaks through silence, facial
expression, body language, etc. Cinema shows
the anger on the face without the use of verbal
communication.

4
Cont.
• Through cinema, the director communicates with
the audience and the audience is equally vital in
this process of communication.
• The action on screen does not occur between the
actors of a film but transpires among the actors
and the audience.
• Cinema is an audio-visual medium and uses
images, sound and editing to communicate.
• It is a combination of several arts like literature,
(story, poetry) painting, music, architecture,
sculpture, photography, and dance.
