2. THE SET-UP:
PHOTO-SHOOT #1
On the left are some images of the set-up in the
media studio. We had multiple people in the
studio so of course we had to be mindful of
safety precautions, but we managed to create a
set-up we would all benefit from. We chose to
have a black paper background rather than the
reflective sheets you can see in the bottom
picture, as we wanted a very dark background.
We used three-point lighting, with red on the
left, blue on the right and a white light
positioned out-of-frame. We also used a gold
reflector to position the light even more
accurately.
We had an external microphone attached to the
camera as we planned to shoot one of the
scenes for my group’s trailer while we were
there.
3. SUBJECT #1:
ANON, PLAYED BY TIA BRIERS
First, I photographed Anon, in both the plain mask
and the bloodstained mask so I would have a choice
when it came to which to use for my magazine cover
and poster. In the shot on the left I had Tia hold the
prop gun in one pocket of her hoodie with the
handle slightly out so it was visible, as I wanted to
communicate the theme of crime and violence to the
target audience.
We used the red and blue lighting because it
represents a theme of binary opposition; red and
blue contrast and connote different meanings, just
as the opposing sides in our film, Illicit Obsession,
do. It is also useful for synergetic purposes because
using it across all of our products (trailer, poster,
magazine cover) helps to create a brand image.
4. SUBJECT #2:
ALICE, PLAYED BY REANNAH MCNEE
Next I photographed Alice, one of Anon’s
multiple victims, sticking to the costume
we had prepared for her in our costume &
props research and planning. Her costume
can be defined as provocative in nature and
stylish, as she has a tight and short dress,
leather jacket and messy make-up and
hair. I think the colours in these images
complimented each other well, as the dark
colours of the costume don’t stand out too
much against the lighting.
5. SUBJECT #3:
EVE, PLAYED BY DOMINIKA MALINA
Another victim of Anon’s is Eve, the character
who goes missing in the group of drug
abusers. In this part of the photo-shoot, the
subject was closer to the left light so the red
colour appeared more intense, but I quite
liked the effect this had and I knew that in
editing I could adjust the saturation
otherwise.
Eve’s costume was intended to be very casual,
almost bordering on the stereotype of the
‘chav’, which is suitable considering the film
is set in Britain and revolves around drug
addicts.
6. SUBJECT #4 (PHOTO-SHOOT #2):
CONNOR, PLAYED BY RYAN GILBEY
This shoot was somewhat improvised as the actor was
unavailable during the scheduled photo shoot in the studio.
Instead, I positioned him at the alleyway location
(described in my location planning blog post) and used the
internal flash of my camera for the main light source. I
decided that since he would likely be cut out of the
photograph, the background wouldn’t be as important as it
was for the other photo-shoot, as long as the lighting was
sufficient.
I kept his costume as close to what he would wear during
filming as possible, meaning dark colours, the bomber
jacket and his hat. This wasn’t an issue as they were items
he already owned. I got him to do a variation of poses so I’d
have plenty of choice in editing, but his expression mostly
remained relaxed and as if he was looking at something in
the distance.
