uses a dedicated path between two stations
path is reserved for the single pair of end users
has three phases
circuit establish
data transfer
circuit disconnect
inefficient
channel capacity dedicated for duration of connection
if no data, capacity wasted
inefficient use of the path if there is bursty traffic
set up (connection) takes time – setup time
once connected, transfer is transparent

packet switching was designed for data
transmitted in small packets
packets contains user data and control info
user data may be part of a larger message
control info includes routing (addressing) info
packets are received, stored briefly
(buffered) and past on to the next node
packets are queued

packets queued and transmitted as fast as

stations connect to local nodes at their own speed
nodes buffer data if required to equalize rates
packets accepted even when network is busy

HSCSD:-

GSM Offers only one time slot(out of 8 time) for a
user
Whereas HSCSD allow 4 consecutive time slots
supports a data rate of 57.6kbps (4*14.4)
In principle a user can be assigned all the 8 time
slots supporting a data rate of 115.2kbps (8*14.4)
In this way HSCSD brings a straightforward
improvement in data rate by combining several
traffic channels together.
10. Always on Connection:-

GPRS permits always on Connection,
which means a connection is already
available.
Always on Connection doesn’t required
to be set up just prior to data transfer.

For Data transmission Packet
Switching is the more efficient
than Circuit Switching whereas, when it
comes to voice transmission Circuit
switching is more efficient than packet
switching
