3. INTRODUCTION OF GSM
10/4/2019
GSM(Global system of mobile
communications),was developed in year
1992(Europe)
It makes efficient use of Spectrum
Easy installation
Low cost of infrastructure
Enhance security features
GSM offers voice and low data rate services

5. GSM subsystem
10/4/20195
GSM supports hierarchical architecture
MSS(Mobile station subsystem)
BSS(base station subsystem)
NSS(Network and switching sub sytem)
OSS(operating subsystem)
6. INTRODUCTION OF GPRS
10/4/2019
GPRS( General Packet Radio Services) is packet
oriented mobile data service
Step between 2G and 3G cellular system
More efficient use of network resources(data
actually transmitted)
It facilitates ‘always ON’ connection
It is well suited for multi user scenario

10. Function Of GPRS
10/4/2019
Broadcast channels:
Packet Broadcast Central Channel (PBCCH)-
Broadcasts information - power control parameters, access
methods and operational modes, network parameters,
required to set up calls.
Common control channels:
Packet Paging Channel (PPCH)-used for control
signalling prior to the call set up
Packet Access Grant Channel (PAGCH)-telling the
mobile which traffic channel has been assigned
Packet Notification Channel (PNCH-used to alert
mobiles that there is broadcast traffic intended for a large
number

11. Function Of GPRS
10/4/2019
Dedicated control channels:
Packet Associated Control Channel (PACCH): Used
for control signalling while a call is in progress
Packet Timing Advance Common Control Channel
(PTCCH): used to adjust the timing advance, messages
arrive at the correct time at the base station
Dedicated traffic channel:
Packet Data Traffic Channel (PDTCH):used to send
the traffic and it is present in both the uplink and downlink
directions, provide high speed data.
