2. The Social Group is represented in many different ways, the characters in the film,
the setting also makes a huge impact on the social group that is represented. For
example if the film setting is in a school, it tells us that the social group is going to
be younger/teens.
The use of props, sound and characters also has a large impact on the social group
that represented, for example the characters are teenagers this shows the social
group to be younger and if the music is contemporary this shows the social group
to be younger and if the music used is older/classic then the social group would be
older/elderly.
How is the social group represented?
3. Easy A
This scene shows the setting of the films, being a school this shows the audience the social
group that will be represented throughout the film and the age of the characters that will be
shown are teenagers .
Contemporary music is play in the background to show that the social group and the age of the
characters that will be shown is the younger generation (Teenagers)
4. After the first scene students start to come out into the school area, while the camera slowly moves
through the area the different types of groups of people are shown, representing the social groups
of the film. The clothing that is shown also shows representation of a teenage/younger social group.
The one take mid shot shows lots of students with lots going on which could be a representation of
the lifestyle of the students. The sound used is the simple music with a voice over, that is explaining
the story, the representation of the social group is with the voice over telling the audience that the
main character of the story is a student, this shows the social group. The main character being
pushed could represent the attitudes of the different characters, and also show how the main
character is un-noticed a lot by other characters.
5. The Breakfast Club
This establishing shot shows the setting straight
away with the sign on the front of the building
(Shermer High School), this identify the characters
to be in high school, showing the social group and
age group of the characters.
Music that was popular with teenagers/high school
students is played in the background further more
showing the audience the social group.
Voice over begins with a teenage boy talking about a letter
of some sort explaining some parts of the overall plot, this
represents the behaviour of the characters in the film. shots
of the empty high school are shown with the voice over
playing in the background.
the shot then shows one of characters complaining about
how they have to attend this detention, this represents the
attitudes of the character. When the characters leaves the
car a wide shot is used to show they are at the high school
previously shown.
6. After the first scene showing one of the main characters two different
scenes that are show in a very similar format with the shot being a
medium close up with them in a car talking to their parent represents the
similarity that the social group that is shown have.
The characters discuss similar things as well "why do i have to be here" "I
don't want to be here", again representing how all of these characters are
in the same social group and have very similar attitudes. Clothing of the
characters shows the age that the characters are (teens). The audience will
identify these characters as teens and see the representation of the the
teenage social group that these characters fit into.
A wide establishing shot is then
used to show all of the
previously shown characters all
in one place to attend this
"detention".
7. Ferris Buellers Day Off
This establishing shot shows us the setting of the
beginning of the film. This shows the audience that the
family is middle class due to the size of the house and
the location.
This also shows a part of the narrative as more of the
narrative is shown at this setting in the film.
The shot shows the main character is in bed ill, it
then turns out he is lying and pretending to be ill
so he is able to take a day off, this represents the
characters manipulative and how he misbehaves.
The way the audience can tell that Ferris is lying is
that when his sister walks in and says he's faking it
to their parents so they don’t let him take the day
off, Ferris does a “shh” to his sister when their
parents aren't looking this tells the audience he's
lying and shows his attitudes.
8. Ferris’ sister is first shown disagreeing with Ferris and
trying to show that he's not actually ill to their parents,
this is a hint to the narrative as the two characters have
lots of friction throughout the film.
The way the character is presented shows the social
group of the character to be a teenager due to the
clothes and the age. Ferris also fits into this social
group.
As Ferris’ parents leave the character looks at the
camera and says “They bought it” further more showing
the audience his manipulative personality that he has.
This represents him as a rebel and how he doesn’t like to
follow rules, shows he is a teenager and is most likely in
high school due to his older age.
This personality shown in this opening scene links to
how Ferris is throughout the rest of the film.
