2. Note:
We decided to change our film plot for our short ,however we wanted to keep
the psychological theme due to the powerful affect it has on the audience, we
also wanted to introduce a drama/teen drama effect to the theme as well. So
we decided to research into different teen drama movies and the effect the
genre has on the targeted audience.
Since our ideal target audience is teenagers and young adults who’s
preference is psychological/ horror themes as well as teen drama’s we
decided to look into teen drama’s that focused more towards teens and young
adults (17-21).
3. What is genre
Genre is important to the narrative structure to a film, documentary, music
video or game. The genre provides characteristics to help construct and edit
a film, the genre is similar to the overall theme of a film.
Genre is the recurring theme of a film, which is important for the narrative
structure, the genre/theme of a film aids you in deciding what actions and
settings of a film. Genre is also important with how a film is shot, for example:
depending on the genre of a film a scene may be shot differently, if the film
had a horror theme then the cuts would be more quick paced, while on the
other hand romance films tend to have shots that are more slow paced and
stretched out, for example when showing a love interest between two
characters, the shots will be slowed down to emphasise this.
Some of the different films genres are: Horror, Drama, Romance, Action and
Sci-fi, as well as the sub genres: psychological horror, teen drama, teen
romance, semi- autobiographical drama and many more.
4. What is drama?
Drama genres, especially in film tend to be very emotional with unexpected events,
this is the type of theme we wanted to introduce into our short film, we wanted to
use these elements, such as uncertainty and the unexpected plot twists, to surprise
our target audience.
Drama in film can also be shown to be dramatized for the audiences interest. In our
short film we didn’t want to over dramatize scenes as we thought it would break the
emotional themes, causing the audiences mind to drift away from the main parts of
the story around our character, Peter.
5. What is teen drama?
Movies with a teen drama genre, are majority of the time focused towards
the main teenaged characters and/or with focus being towards the
audience, which will most likely be teenagers.
Teen drama’s narrative is often about teenagers and their school, love and
home life, they also show teenagers to be ‘rowdy’ with loud music and
teenage stereotypes such as the ‘nerds’ and the ‘popular kids’. Teen
drama’s usually have a romance element to it, with the main characters
(usually female and male) trying to overcome their differences to be
together.
We wanted to introduce a teen drama theme into our new story plot as we
wanted the movie to have a larger scale impact on our audience, since our
audience is primarily teenage and young adults, we felt by making the plot
around a teenager suffering with compressed dissociative identity disorder
7. Juno Review/summary
Juno is a light-hearted look into teen pregnancy, The movie is
about a 16 year old girl called Juno (played by Ellen Page), a
stereotypical witty sarcastic teen who is uncommonly intelligent
for her age. She decides she wants to have sex with her best
friend, Paulie ( Michael Cera), with no surprise end up pregnant,
feeling confused and cold she decides she will have the child
and give it to a loving adoptive family.
After finding a suitable couple, with Vanessa (Jennifer Garner)
being consumed with having a child and Mark Loring (Jason
Batemen) who is immature at times, we progress over the next 9
months while Juno copes with teen pregnancy, the story then
starts to turn darker.
As Juno and Mark Loring come closer friends, deeper feelings
emerge between the two causing arguments between Vanessa
and her husband.
8. Thirteen Summary
Thirteen is a mix between teen drama, psychological thriller and semi-
autobiographical drama That is about Tracy, an intelligent student who
smokes and cuts to escape the emotional stress of coming from a
broken home. After befriending the new girl (Evie) Tracy is thrown into
a new world of money, drugs, stealing and sex, drifting away from her
family and friends due to the backlash of her new world Tracy spins out
of control in which she cannot control.
Many different elements inspired us when creating and re-drafting the
plot for our own movie, we wanted to include the hints of paranoia
throughout our film, making the audience know there is something a
miss about our character, however will be unable to tell what it is until
the very end of the film.
Thirteen also inspired us due to the realism of the entire movie, as
Thirteen is about a young teenager it allowed us to feel more connected
and interested in the film, due to the sense of connection with the main
character, Tracy as she is of similar age to our own.
This why we wanted to aim our short film about dissociative identity
disorder to teenagers such as ourselves, we wanted the audience feel
he same sense of connection to our film, as we did with Thirteen.
