states in
North East
India have
faced differ-
ent issues and forms of in-
surgency, violence and tur-
bulence at some or the
other time since independ-
ence. Today, most of the
region’s insurgencies are
dormant, as insurgent
groups have declared cease
fire and entered into slow-
moving peace processes
with government. Things
were getting brighter in
Manipur also as I had per-
sonally travelled through
Manipur last year and
found barring few inci-
dents the environment was
peaceful. Northeast India
has been facing insurgen-
cies since independence
mainly attributable to lack
of economic and infra-
structural development and
low representation in main-
stream politics. Another
fear amongst the multi eth-
nic tribes is losing their
unique identity and culture.
The increasing number
of tourists in Manipur reas-
sured that the situation had
normalised. But this illu-
sion has been destroyed by
new clashes that erupted in
May 2023. It looks like
Manipur is back to situa-
tion prevailing in 1990s
and only the faces have
altered. Previously, Naga
and Kuki were at odds;
now, Meitei and Kuki are
in conflict. Manipur has
returned to the grip of the
gun culture and return to
normalcy is going to take
tremendous efforts and
time. Manipur is now di-
vided into exclusive ethnic
zones, largely Hindu
Meiteis concentrated in the
valley and the mostly
Christian Kukis living in
the surrounding hills.
The fighting pits the
Meitei, who make up 53
per cent of the state’s 2.85
million population, but oc-
cupy only 10 per cent of its
land, against the Kuki and
33 other tribes, which con-
stitute about 30 per cent of
the population and are geo-
graphically more spread
out in the hill areas. The
conflict stems from dec-
ades of contestation over
land and natural resources,
fuelling deep-seated re-
sentment among both the
Meiteis and Kukis.
Though, the Kukis are
mostly Christian and the
Meitei mostly Hindus but
the current violence is
more of ethnic rather than
religious divides.
MAJOR ISSUES OF
TURMOIL AND
CURRENT VIOLENCE
The Kuki have long been
recognised as a Scheduled
Tribe under Indian law, an
affirmative action measure
that assures tribal commu-
nity members access to
state-run educational insti-
tutions, government jobs
and safeguards such as the
exclusive right to buy and
own land in the state’s rec-
ognised tribal areas. The
Meitei also enjoy certain
benefits on account of be-
ing recognised as a “so-
cially and economically
backward class”. But they
have been demanding the
tribal status as a necessity
to “preserve” the commu-
nity, save their ancestral
land, traditions and cul-
ture. Another issue is Chin
refugees from Myanmar
have reportedly been seek-
ing shelter in Manipur and
radical Meitei outfits such
as Arambai Tenggol and
Meitei Leepun accuse the
Kuki, who share an ethnic
heritage with the Chin, of
illegally settling refugees
in Manipur’s hills.
The Meiteis as Ma-
nipur’s largest community
enjoy immense social, po-
litical and economic ad-
vantages, and dominates
police forces giving them
an upper hand in the clash-
es. The Chief Minister who
is a Meitei has echoed al-
legations that the Kuki are
involved in the illegal drug
trade in collaboration with
transnational networks op-
erating from Myanmar.
Situation has deterio-
rated particularly after
Biren Singh’s government
won a second term in 2022.
The government started
evicting primarily Kuki
villagers from houses and
villages allegedly built on
forest land in violation of
the Indian forest law. The
Kuki, who believe the
Meitei chief minister has
been acting in a partisan
manner, again mounted a
series of protests, some of
which turned violent.
As of today, what is
worrisome is that an esti-
mated 4,000 weapons and
half a million bullets stolen
throughout the state are at
the disposal of both com-
munities and has the po-
tential to escalate the in-
tensity of the conflict
manifold. The Assam Ri-
fles are not being fully uti-
lised and permitted to op-
erate as Meitei groups al-
lege them biased towards
Kukis and obstruct their
movements and the Kukis
don’t trust the Meitei-dom-
inated state police. The
Centre hasn’t been particu-
larly proactive in dealing
with Manipur conflict; nor
has it been very effective at
dampening unrest. The
Home Minister during his
visit to Manipur, met both
Meitei and Kuki delega-
tions where Meitei groups
resisted Kukis’demand for
greater autonomy and
wanted Assam Rifles to be
replaced with another
force and the Kukis want-
ed imposition of presi-
dent’s rule in the state and
an Autonomous Kuki Ad-
ministration. But so far, no
firm and visible actions are
seen to resolve the Ma-
nipur issue except an-
nouncing creation of a
committee made up of
CM, elected representa-
tives, political party lead-
ers, and Meitei and Kuki
representatives to start a
peace dialogue. The initia-
tive was an instant failure
as both Meitei and Kuki
representatives refused to
participate due to disagree-
ments over the commit-
tee’s composition.
WAY AHEAD FOR
RESTORATION OF
PEACE IN MANIPUR
l Constitute a committee ac-
ceptable to all stakehold-
ers to negotiate peace and
stability in Manipur. It may
have moderates, includ-
ing women, from both
communities, preferably
academics or civil society
representatives who have
not taken polarising stands
during the violence.
l Replace CM with someone
less polarising or imposi-
tion of president’s rule or
a neutral administration to
guarantee peace and me-
diate between the parties.
l Allow the Centre to assume
command over all security
forces in the area and re-
cover stolen weapons.
l The PM is a popular figure
in Manipur and his active
involvement for peace may
yield results.
l Measures to address the
widespread sexual vio-
lence and sincere efforts
to bring perpetrators to
justice.
l Measures to restore comity
between the clashing com-
munities by security forces
who in coordination with
social organisations from
both communities, could
facilitate an exchange of
dead bodies for performing
appropriate funeral rites.
l Need to address Kuki aspi-
rations for tribal autonomy,
though it isn’t easy as
both Meiteis & Nagas will
oppose it.
l Need for better infra devp,
creation of more jobs,
promotion of trade and
commerce in the state.
Manipur’s violence is a
complicated web of histori-
cal, ethnic & political caus-
es that continues to trouble
the country. Govt & people
must work unitedly to find
lasting solution to this eth-
nic turmoil.

UP FIRST TO BAN
HALAL CERTS, SAVE

MUIZZU MAKES TROOP
PULLOUT OFFICIAL
he Uttar Pradesh government has taken a lead
in banning “halal” certification for food prod-
ucts except those meant for exports. The In-
dian government does not mandate halal certification,
nor is there a uniform law. That loophole has been
plugged by UP on an FIR filed by a BJP worker who
saidthateightagencieswereissuing“forged”halalcer-
tificates for “financial gains, fostering social animosity
and also violating public trust. The underlying purpose
of these certificates was to exploit religious sentiments.
Halal is an Arabic word meaning permissible and
is especially used for slaughtering land animals in a
particular way to make it permissible as per Islamic
law. Opposed to halal is the word haraam (forbidden)
and includes products like alcohol.
Whether the companies issuing halal certificates
are legal or not is yet to be determined. The com-
plainant has claimed that none of the certificate-is-
suing companies are recognized by the Central gov-
ernment. There is a certification process for export
of meat and meat products.
T
n a significant diplomatic move, President
Mohamed Muizzu of the Maldives has of-
ficially called for the withdrawal of Indian
troops from the island nation. In a nuanced address,
Muizzu emphasized his commitment to fostering
trade ties with both India and China, maintaining a
delicate balance on the economic front. However, his
silence on the issue of strategic ties with either nation
has raised concerns, particularly given his apparent
pro-China stance.
Muizzu’s victory marked a notable shift from his
predecessor Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, who was known
for his pro-India
stance. The contrast
in foreign policy ori-
entation has led many
to view Muizzu’s
presidency as a tri-
umph for China in the
strategically crucial
Indian Ocean region
where China has been
expanding its pres-
ence. The president’s
decision to overlook
India’s assistance for
maritime security fur-
ther underscores this
shift in allegiance.
The call for troop
withdrawal, even
when there is no clar-
ity on the number of
Indian troops stationed there, is bound to have far-
reaching implications, signaling a recalibration of geo-
political dynamics in the region. As President Muizzu
navigates the delicate balance between India and Chi-
na, the question of strategic alliances remains unan-
swered, leaving room for speculation and concern.
TheevolvingscenariointheMaldivesnotonlyreflects
the complexities of global power play but also under-
scores the need for a nuanced approach to diplomatic
relations. Muizzu’s diplomatic tightrope walk will un-
doubtedly be closely monitored, as the region observes
how his presidency shapes the geopolitical landscape.

He claimed that Modi

Speaking in a rally at

alleged that the Kalesh-

“served as an ATM” for
Chief Minister Chan-

came a “symbol of cor-

He said the BJP, after
coming to power in Tel-
angana, will investigate
the alleged corruption in
the project and send the
culprits to prison.
He also alleged that
temple lands in the state
were being utilised for
other purposes.
“Did the BRS MLAs

sion in Dalit Bandhu

KCR DOES POLITICS OF APPEASEMENT IN
TELANGANA: JP NADDA TARGETS BRS
Ranga Reddy: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)
National President JP Nadda hit out at ruling
party in Telangana Bharat Rashtra Samithi
(BRS) on Sunday, accusing it of 'indulging in appease-
ment politics' and 'immersing deep in corruption.'
On one hand, PM Modi works for the satisfaction of
the people. KCR does the politics of appeasement in
Telangana. Did they not make Urdu the second lan-
guage? Are they not trying to increase the 4 per cent
reservation in the name of religion to 12 per cent? Are
they not planning to grab the land for temples? We
have to remove such people who are doing such ap-
peasement, Nadda said, addressing a rally in Ranga
Reddy's Chelleva in poll-bound Telangana. It was in
2014 that the BRS [then TRS] supremo promised a 12
per cent reservation for Muslims of the state in Shad-
nagar, a town about 40 km from Hyderabad.

Triangular contest polarisation to increase voting percentage on some seats

he equations
emerging re-
garding the
StateAssembly elections
are pointing towards
bumper voting this time.
According to the voting
formula, the percentage
of votes polled is higher
in triangular contests in-
stead of head-to-head
contests. At the same
time, the special efforts
of the Election Commis-
sion and the huge in-
crease in the number of
youth voting for the first
time will also prove to
increase the voting per-
centage.
A huge increase in
voting percentage is gen-
erally considered a sign
of change in regime, but
this time, there will be
many reasons for the in-
crease in voting percent-
age. While the candi-
dates will make extra
efforts to get votes in
their favour in triangular
contests, the Election
Commission is also mak-
ing efforts to increase the
vote percentage.
In the 2018 Assembly
elections, the highest
turnout was seen in those
seats where three or more
candidates were showing
strength.
At the same time, po-
larisation of votes in
Pokran seat of Jaisalmer
had taken the voting per-
centage to 87.45%.
Whereas in Sumerpur of
Pali, the lowest number
of 61.28% voters came
out to cast their votes,
where there was a direct
contest. In the last elec-
tions, a triangular contest
was seen on more than 40
seats.
Percentage of votes polled is higher in triangular contests.

REBELS AND SMALL PARTIES ARE CREATING A
MULTI-CORNERED CONTEST ON MORE THAN 50 SEATS
There is a situation of multi-cornered contest on more
than 50 seats in the State. This situation has arisen due
to presence of strong rebel candidates of both Congress
and BJP in more than half of these seats. At the same time, in
many seats, strong candidates contesting on tickets of small
and regional parties have made the contest triangular. The con-
test has become a four-cornered contest on half a dozen seats.
ELECTION DEPARTMENT’S FOCUS ON 22,635 BOOTHS
This time, the Election Department has made several
efforts to increase the voting percentage, including man-

Micro bags
are all around you, making a
fashion statement. While
functionality goes out of the
window as we opt for micro
bags, they are a definite
choice if you are in the mood
to make some head turns! A
definite source of leaving an
outsizing impression, these
bags have been gracing the
feeds of influencers and ce-
lebrities for a while now.
To speculate these bags
from a philosophical as-
pect, these bags are taking
all the right steps to make
us a fan of minimalism
and take us away from
the materialistic world,
how ironic it might
sound!
The love for these goes
back a few decades when la-
dies of the royal family,
in the 1900s, would
carry their version of
micro bags, reticules,
that were more of an
accessory to their elegant at-
tires than storage equipment,
like for many of us! However,
this nanoscopic bag came back
into the picture a few years
back in 2018 when Jacque-
mus launched its ‘Le Chiq-
uito’ collection where
‘chiquito’ stands for tiny
in Spanish. This French
brand definitely gave all
of us a chance to own a bag
with little utility, as the
visibility, while leaving
the chic aura that all of us aim
for, these days.
Generally dominating arms
of Kardashians-Kapoors, who
have a huge team at their dis-
posal running around to carry
their world, micro bags aren’t
practical for regular people
who need to fit in a pair of
boots and maxi for their after-
work party.
But well when it comes to
fashion, is practicality even a
box you need to check?
As the world is divided between spacious totes lovers and micro bag
enthusiasts, let City First introduce you to the latter which is
definitely not the smartest fashion trend to ever exist!

times, it can even result in a
mutually beneficial solution
and a closer, healthier rela-
tionship. On the other hand,
when conflict escalates or is
chronic and unresolved, this
can be unhealthy and stress-
ful, causing more overall
conflict in a relationship.
To understand interper-
sonal conflicts and how best
to approach a resolution, one
needs to understand what are
various types of conflicts.
You might experience verbal
conflict, such as an argument,
or nonverbal conflict, which
might involve someone turn-
ing their back or walking
away from you. No matter
what shape a conflict takes, it
can always be identified as
one of these six types: -
PSEUDO CONFLICT
Arises when there is a diver-
genceofthoughtsonapproach
and means to arrive at a solu-
tion to a problem and failing
to see eye-to-eye resulting in
a conflict. Differently, per-
ceived goals or misunder-
standings leading to a differ-
ence of opinion or badgering
also result in pseudo conflicts.
These are easily resolved with
a bit of clarification, realign-
ing perceptions and handling
badgering maturely.
FACT CONFLICT
Occurswhentwoormorepeo-
ple disagree over information
or the truth of something. A
check on a credible source for
the truth is the best way out.
VALUE CONFLICT
These occur when different
personal values lead to disa-
greement and are hard to
identify when it first occurs
and may not have a clear path
to resolution. Acknowledg-
ing opposing viewpoints is
the best option.
POLICY CONFLICT
Happens when people can’t
agree on a problem-solving
strategy or action plan in a
given situation. Personality,
upbringing, education, and
any number of other factors
might have an impact on
someone’s approach to poli-
cy, or problem-solving, so
this kind of conflict isn’t unu-
sual. These are best resolved
through compromise.
EGO CONFLICT
Arises when smaller conflicts
are unresolved. Ego conflict
often develops alongside
other types of conflict, and it
can make any disagreement
trickier to navigate. Losing
the argument has the poten-
tial to damage a person’s
pride. An ego conflict is both
destructive and frustrating.
META CONFLICT
Meta conflict is a conflict
that is due to disagreements
about the process of commu-
nication itself during an argu-
ment. The argument then
spirals into an argument
about the argument, and the
initial conflict is no longer
even being discussed.
CAUSES OF
INTERPERSONAL
CONFLICT
There are many different
causes of interpersonal con-
flict, including differing
points of view, personality
mismatches, cultural differ-
ences, diverse upbringings,
or conflicting values and be-
liefs. Conflicts are more like-
ly to arise when people are
dealing with frustration,
stress, pent-up anger, or lack
of communication about lin-
gering issues build up and
then “come out sideways.”
POTENTIAL RESOLUTION
METHODS
There are plenty of healthy,
productive ways to work
through conflict, though
some won’t work in every
situation. According to the
Thomas-Kilmann Conflict
Mode Instrument (TKI), used
by human resource (HR) pro-
fessionals around the world,
there are five major styles of
conflict management, avoid-
ing, avoiding, accommodat-
ing, compromising, collabo-
rating, and competing. Each
strategy has its own benefits,
there is no right or wrong
conflict management style.
Understanding how you
respond to conflicts instinc-
tively leads to efficient and
effective conflict resolution
and a win-win situation.
AVOIDING
This happens when one or
more people resort to avoid-
ance behaviour and withdraw
from the conflict. Sometimes,
people bury their feelings and
move on or sometimes storm
out of the room or leave and
at times they respond in more
indirect ways like making
passive-aggressive com-
ments, complaining or re-
sponding in a snippy or sar-
castic way. Avoiding any
conflict altogether is usually
unhealthy and not recom-
mended as an effective cop-
ing strategy.
ACCOMMODATING
Accommodating is when one
or more people decide to let
the other person “win” this
time. This can be a helpful
way to deal with conflict, as
long as one person is not in a
pattern of ignoring their own
needs just to keep the peace.
COMPROMISING
Compromise happens when
everyone agrees to give a lit-
tle and meet in the middle.
Compromise is usually re-
garded as a great way to re-
solve conflict because every-
one gets their needs at least
somewhat met, and the rela-
tionship stays intact.
COMPETING
Competing is when one per-
son in a conflict becomes
more aggressive or coercive,
and either forces their will on
others or bullies them into
doing things their way. It’s
like - “It’s my way or the
highway”. This leaves others
feeling powerless, disregard-
ed, and resentful. While com-
petition has its place, resolv-
ing conflicts is not the time
for it.
COLLABORATING
This involves working to-
gether as a team to solve the
problem. Collaboration
would involve sitting down,
communicating, listening to
each other’s concerns and
coming up with a solution
together. This approach is re-
garded as the best solution
for all involved.
THINGS TO AVOID
For your conflict to be re-
solved, your communication
has to be productive. It’s bet-
ter to avoid: - Serial argu-
ments, going around and
around about the same topics,
placing blame on others,
cross-complaints, or re-
sponding to an issue with a
different complaint, not
fighting fair, continuing to
fight when things get heated,
when it’s often better to take
a break, “Kitchen-sink” argu-
ments, where every problem
in the world is brought up,
insults or name-calling and
Mind Reading.
It’s only human to have in-
terpersonal conflict from
time to time. By identifying
what type of conflict, and
how to best resolve it, one
can minimize its impact on
everyone involved in the con-
flict. In the end, it's important
to retain peace of mind and
keep relationships intact.

PTI Ahmedabad ndia’s thunder- ing juggernaut came to a screeching halt in an anti- climactic finish as Aus- tralia denied a golden generation of Indian cricketers the silverware it so desperately craved by lifting an unprece- dented sixth World Cup trophy, here on Sunday. The Australians once again showed what me- ticulous planning and ruthless execution is all about, chasing 241 in just 43 overs with Travis Head (137 off 120 balls) once again proving to be India’s nemesis. MORE ON P7 PM Narendra Modi and Australian Deputy PM Richard Marles watched the ICC World Cup final in the last hour of the match at the Narendra Modi Stadium. HM Amit Shah and Gujarat Guv Acharya Devvrat were also present. Congratulations to Australia on a magnificent World Cup victory! Theirs was a commendable performance through the tournament, culminating in a splendid triumph. Compliments to Travis Head for his remarkable game today. Dear Team India, Your talent and determination through the World Cup was noteworthy. You’ve played with great spirit and brought immense pride to the nation. We stand with you today and always. • 2. TOP TWEETS SPIRITUAL SPEAK To be idle is a short road to death and to be diligent is a way of life. Foolish people are idle, wise people are diligent. BUDDHA The affection and support of Narayanpet for BJP is a testament to the fact that people of Telangana are determined to root out the corrupt KCR government. Instead of focusing on Telangana’s growth and progress, KCR’s only priority has been the prosperity of his own family. Under the able leadership of Hon. PM Shri @narendramodiJi, BJP is resolute to provide better lives to the people of Telangana and put an end to appeasement and corruption. Jagat Prakash Nadda@JPNadda A historic milestone for the Indian aviation sector! On 18th November 2023, we have set a new record by carrying 4,56,748 domestic passengers. A testament to our resilience and strength to fight global challenges. Jyotiraditya M. Scindia @JM_Scindia lmost all states in North East India have faced differ- ent issues and forms of in- surgency, violence and tur- bulence at some or the other time since independ- ence. Today, most of the region’s insurgencies are dormant, as insurgent groups have declared cease fire and entered into slow- moving peace processes with government. Things were getting brighter in Manipur also as I had per- sonally travelled through Manipur last year and found barring few inci- dents the environment was peaceful. Northeast India has been facing insurgen- cies since independence mainly attributable to lack of economic and infra- structural development and low representation in main- stream politics. Another fear amongst the multi eth- nic tribes is losing their unique identity and culture. The increasing number of tourists in Manipur reas- sured that the situation had normalised. But this illu- sion has been destroyed by new clashes that erupted in May 2023. It looks like Manipur is back to situa- tion prevailing in 1990s and only the faces have altered. Previously, Naga and Kuki were at odds; now, Meitei and Kuki are in conflict. Manipur has returned to the grip of the gun culture and return to normalcy is going to take tremendous efforts and time. Manipur is now di- vided into exclusive ethnic zones, largely Hindu Meiteis concentrated in the valley and the mostly Christian Kukis living in the surrounding hills. The fighting pits the Meitei, who make up 53 per cent of the state’s 2.85 million population, but oc- cupy only 10 per cent of its land, against the Kuki and 33 other tribes, which con- stitute about 30 per cent of the population and are geo- graphically more spread out in the hill areas. The conflict stems from dec- ades of contestation over land and natural resources, fuelling deep-seated re- sentment among both the Meiteis and Kukis. Though, the Kukis are mostly Christian and the Meitei mostly Hindus but the current violence is more of ethnic rather than religious divides. MAJOR ISSUES OF TURMOIL AND CURRENT VIOLENCE The Kuki have long been recognised as a Scheduled Tribe under Indian law, an affirmative action measure that assures tribal commu- nity members access to state-run educational insti- tutions, government jobs and safeguards such as the exclusive right to buy and own land in the state’s rec- ognised tribal areas. The Meitei also enjoy certain benefits on account of be- ing recognised as a “so- cially and economically backward class”. But they have been demanding the tribal status as a necessity to “preserve” the commu- nity, save their ancestral land, traditions and cul- ture. Another issue is Chin refugees from Myanmar have reportedly been seek- ing shelter in Manipur and radical Meitei outfits such as Arambai Tenggol and Meitei Leepun accuse the Kuki, who share an ethnic heritage with the Chin, of illegally settling refugees in Manipur’s hills. The Meiteis as Ma- nipur’s largest community enjoy immense social, po- litical and economic ad- vantages, and dominates police forces giving them an upper hand in the clash- es. The Chief Minister who is a Meitei has echoed al- legations that the Kuki are involved in the illegal drug trade in collaboration with transnational networks op- erating from Myanmar. Situation has deterio- rated particularly after Biren Singh’s government won a second term in 2022. The government started evicting primarily Kuki villagers from houses and villages allegedly built on forest land in violation of the Indian forest law. The Kuki, who believe the Meitei chief minister has been acting in a partisan manner, again mounted a series of protests, some of which turned violent. As of today, what is worrisome is that an esti- mated 4,000 weapons and half a million bullets stolen throughout the state are at the disposal of both com- munities and has the po- tential to escalate the in- tensity of the conflict manifold. The Assam Ri- fles are not being fully uti- lised and permitted to op- erate as Meitei groups al- lege them biased towards Kukis and obstruct their movements and the Kukis don’t trust the Meitei-dom- inated state police. The Centre hasn’t been particu- larly proactive in dealing with Manipur conflict; nor has it been very effective at dampening unrest. The Home Minister during his visit to Manipur, met both Meitei and Kuki delega- tions where Meitei groups resisted Kukis’demand for greater autonomy and wanted Assam Rifles to be replaced with another force and the Kukis want- ed imposition of presi- dent’s rule in the state and an Autonomous Kuki Ad- ministration. But so far, no firm and visible actions are seen to resolve the Ma- nipur issue except an- nouncing creation of a committee made up of CM, elected representa- tives, political party lead- ers, and Meitei and Kuki representatives to start a peace dialogue. The initia- tive was an instant failure as both Meitei and Kuki representatives refused to participate due to disagree- ments over the commit- tee’s composition. WAY AHEAD FOR RESTORATION OF PEACE IN MANIPUR l Constitute a committee ac- ceptable to all stakehold- ers to negotiate peace and stability in Manipur. It may have moderates, includ- ing women, from both communities, preferably academics or civil society representatives who have not taken polarising stands during the violence. l Replace CM with someone less polarising or imposi- tion of president’s rule or a neutral administration to guarantee peace and me- diate between the parties. l Allow the Centre to assume command over all security forces in the area and re- cover stolen weapons. l The PM is a popular figure in Manipur and his active involvement for peace may yield results. l Measures to address the widespread sexual vio- lence and sincere efforts to bring perpetrators to justice. l Measures to restore comity between the clashing com- munities by security forces who in coordination with social organisations from both communities, could facilitate an exchange of dead bodies for performing appropriate funeral rites. l Need to address Kuki aspi- rations for tribal autonomy, though it isn’t easy as both Meiteis & Nagas will oppose it. l Need for better infra devp, creation of more jobs, promotion of trade and commerce in the state. Manipur’s violence is a complicated web of histori- cal, ethnic & political caus- es that continues to trouble the country. Govt & people must work unitedly to find lasting solution to this eth- nic turmoil. THE VIEWS EXPRESSED BY THE AUTHOR ARE PERSONAL A WORRISOME ISSUE As of today, what is worrisome is that an estimated 4,000 weapons and half a million bullets stolen throughout the state are at the disposal of both communities and has the potential to escalate the intensity of the conflict manifold. The Assam Rifles are not being fully utilised and permitted to operate as Meitei groups allege them biased towards Kukis and obstruct their movements and the Kukis do not trust the Meitei- dominated state police. The central government has not been particularly proactive in dealing with the Manipur conflict; nor has it been very effective at dampening the unrest. ALASTINGSOLUTIONSTILL EVADESMANIPURTURMOIL The Meiteis as Manipur’s largest community enjoy immense social, political and economic advantages, and dominates police forces giving them an upper hand in the clashes. The Chief Minister who is a Meitei has echoed allegations that the Kuki are involved in the illegal drug trade in collaboration with transnational networks operating from Myanmar IN-DEPTH UP FIRST TO BAN HALAL CERTS, SAVE THOSE FOR EXPORT MUIZZU MAKES TROOP PULLOUT OFFICIAL he Uttar Pradesh government has taken a lead in banning “halal” certification for food prod- ucts except those meant for exports. The In- dian government does not mandate halal certification, nor is there a uniform law. That loophole has been plugged by UP on an FIR filed by a BJP worker who saidthateightagencieswereissuing“forged”halalcer- tificates for “financial gains, fostering social animosity and also violating public trust. The underlying purpose of these certificates was to exploit religious sentiments. Halal is an Arabic word meaning permissible and is especially used for slaughtering land animals in a particular way to make it permissible as per Islamic law. Opposed to halal is the word haraam (forbidden) and includes products like alcohol. Whether the companies issuing halal certificates are legal or not is yet to be determined. The com- plainant has claimed that none of the certificate-is- suing companies are recognized by the Central gov- ernment. There is a certification process for export of meat and meat products. T n a significant diplomatic move, President Mohamed Muizzu of the Maldives has of- ficially called for the withdrawal of Indian troops from the island nation. In a nuanced address, Muizzu emphasized his commitment to fostering trade ties with both India and China, maintaining a delicate balance on the economic front. However, his silence on the issue of strategic ties with either nation has raised concerns, particularly given his apparent pro-China stance. Muizzu’s victory marked a notable shift from his predecessor Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, who was known for his pro-India stance. The contrast in foreign policy ori- entation has led many to view Muizzu’s presidency as a tri- umph for China in the strategically crucial Indian Ocean region where China has been expanding its pres- ence. The president’s decision to overlook India’s assistance for maritime security fur- ther underscores this shift in allegiance. The call for troop withdrawal, even when there is no clar- ity on the number of Indian troops stationed there, is bound to have far- reaching implications, signaling a recalibration of geo- political dynamics in the region. As President Muizzu navigates the delicate balance between India and Chi- na, the question of strategic alliances remains unan- swered, leaving room for speculation and concern. TheevolvingscenariointheMaldivesnotonlyreflects the complexities of global power play but also under- scores the need for a nuanced approach to diplomatic relations. Muizzu’s diplomatic tightrope walk will un- doubtedly be closely monitored, as the region observes how his presidency shapes the geopolitical landscape. Triangular contest polarisation to increase voting percentage on some seats Pankaj Soni Jaipur he equations emerging re- garding the StateAssembly elections are pointing towards bumper voting this time. According to the voting formula, the percentage of votes polled is higher in triangular contests in- stead of head-to-head contests. At the same time, the special efforts of the Election Commis- sion and the huge in- crease in the number of youth voting for the first time will also prove to increase the voting per- centage. A huge increase in voting percentage is gen- erally considered a sign of change in regime, but this time, there will be many reasons for the in- crease in voting percent- age. While the candi- dates will make extra efforts to get votes in their favour in triangular contests, the Election Commission is also mak- ing efforts to increase the vote percentage. In the 2018 Assembly elections, the highest turnout was seen in those seats where three or more candidates were showing strength. At the same time, po- larisation of votes in Pokran seat of Jaisalmer had taken the voting per- centage to 87.45%. Whereas in Sumerpur of Pali, the lowest number of 61.28% voters came out to cast their votes, where there was a direct contest. However, this nanoscopic bag came back into the picture a few years back in 2018 when Jacque- mus launched its ‘Le Chiq- uito’ collection where ‘chiquito’ stands for tiny in Spanish. This French brand definitely gave all of us a chance to own a bag with little utility, as the visibility, while leaving the chic aura that all of us aim for, these days. Generally dominating arms of Kardashians-Kapoors, who have a huge team at their dis- posal running around to carry their world, micro bags aren’t practical for regular people who need to fit in a pair of boots and maxi for their after- work party. But well when it comes to fashion, is practicality even a box you need to check? As the world is divided between spacious totes lovers and micro bag enthusiasts, let City First introduce you to the latter which is definitely not the smartest fashion trend to ever exist! Though the conflict at home or work place tends to merge but has different im- plications. Generally, inter- personal conflicts at home impact the family more and some extent society, whereas inter personal conflicts at work workplace impact the functional unit or system and overall productivity at the national level. Hence the need to tackle interpersonal conflicts at the workplace place on priority. People have divergent personalities, val- ues, expectations, and atti- tudes toward problem-solv- ing. When you work or inter- act with someone who doesn’t share your opinions or goals, conflict can result. If you're experiencing work- place conflict, learning how to resolve it can help you im- prove your communication skills and become more pro- ductive. Interpersonal con- flict can be healthy; some- times, it can even result in a mutually beneficial solution and a closer, healthier rela- tionship. On the other hand, when conflict escalates or is chronic and unresolved, this can be unhealthy and stress- ful, causing more overall conflict in a relationship. To understand interper- sonal conflicts and how best to approach a resolution, one needs to understand what are various types of conflicts. You might experience verbal conflict, such as an argument, or nonverbal conflict, which might involve someone turn- ing their back or walking away from you. No matter what shape a conflict takes, it can always be identified as one of these six types: - PSEUDO CONFLICT Arises when there is a diver- genceofthoughtsonapproach and means to arrive at a solu- tion to a problem and failing to see eye-to-eye resulting in a conflict. Differently, per- ceived goals or misunder- standings leading to a differ- ence of opinion or badgering also result in pseudo conflicts. These are easily resolved with a bit of clarification, realign- ing perceptions and handling badgering maturely. FACT CONFLICT Occurswhentwoormorepeo- ple disagree over information or the truth of something. A check on a credible source for the truth is the best way out. VALUE CONFLICT These occur when different personal values lead to disa- greement and are hard to identify when it first occurs and may not have a clear path to resolution. Acknowledg- ing opposing viewpoints is the best option. POLICY CONFLICT Happens when people can’t agree on a problem-solving strategy or action plan in a given situation. Personality, upbringing, education, and any number of other factors might have an impact on someone’s approach to poli- cy, or problem-solving, so this kind of conflict isn’t unu- sual. These are best resolved through compromise. EGO CONFLICT Arises when smaller conflicts are unresolved. Ego conflict often develops alongside other types of conflict, and it can make any disagreement trickier to navigate. Losing the argument has the poten- tial to damage a person’s pride. An ego conflict is both destructive and frustrating. META CONFLICT Meta conflict is a conflict that is due to disagreements about the process of commu- nication itself during an argu- ment. The argument then spirals into an argument about the argument, and the initial conflict is no longer even being discussed. CAUSES OF INTERPERSONAL CONFLICT There are many different causes of interpersonal con- flict, including differing points of view, personality mismatches, cultural differ- ences, diverse upbringings, or conflicting values and be- liefs. Conflicts are more like- ly to arise when people are dealing with frustration, stress, pent-up anger, or lack of communication about lin- gering issues build up and then “come out sideways.” POTENTIAL RESOLUTION METHODS There are plenty of healthy, productive ways to work through conflict, though some won’t work in every situation. According to the Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument (TKI), used by human resource (HR) pro- fessionals around the world, there are five major styles of conflict management, avoid- ing, avoiding, accommodat- ing, compromising, collabo- rating, and competing. Each strategy has its own benefits, there is no right or wrong conflict management style. Understanding how you respond to conflicts instinc- tively leads to efficient and effective conflict resolution and a win-win situation. AVOIDING This happens when one or more people resort to avoid- ance behaviour and withdraw from the conflict. Sometimes, people bury their feelings and move on or sometimes storm out of the room or leave and at times they respond in more indirect ways like making passive-aggressive com- ments, complaining or re- sponding in a snippy or sar- castic way. Avoiding any conflict altogether is usually unhealthy and not recom- mended as an effective cop- ing strategy. ACCOMMODATING Accommodating is when one or more people decide to let the other person “win” this time. This can be a helpful way to deal with conflict, as long as one person is not in a pattern of ignoring their own needs just to keep the peace. COMPROMISING Compromise happens when everyone agrees to give a lit- tle and meet in the middle. Compromise is usually re- garded as a great way to re- solve conflict because every- one gets their needs at least somewhat met, and the rela- tionship stays intact. COMPETING Competing is when one per- son in a conflict becomes more aggressive or coercive, and either forces their will on others or bullies them into doing things their way. It’s like - “It’s my way or the highway”. This leaves others feeling powerless, disregard- ed, and resentful. While com- petition has its place, resolv- ing conflicts is not the time for it. COLLABORATING This involves working to- gether as a team to solve the problem. Collaboration would involve sitting down, communicating, listening to each other’s concerns and coming up with a solution together. This approach is re- garded as the best solution for all involved. THINGS TO AVOID For your conflict to be re- solved, your communication has to be productive. It’s bet- ter to avoid: - Serial argu- ments, going around and around about the same topics, placing blame on others, cross-complaints, or re- sponding to an issue with a different complaint, not fighting fair, continuing to fight when things get heated, when it’s often better to take a break, “Kitchen-sink” argu- ments, where every problem in the world is brought up, insults or name-calling and Mind Reading. It’s only human to have in- terpersonal conflict from time to time. By identifying what type of conflict, and how to best resolve it, one can minimize its impact on everyone involved in the con- flict. In the end, it's important to retain peace of mind and keep relationships intact. management Interpersonalconflict Rajesh Bhukar cityfirst@firstindia.co.in I
