Fumio Kishida
Insofar as transformative
leadership goes, few can match the standard set
by Japanese PM Fumio Kishida who is presently revolutionising
Japan’s
foreign policy direction, pivoting away from the nation’s post Second War
pacifism towards a more assertive approach that is unafraid of getting
involved in complicated geopolitical clashes. On the domestic front,
Kishida is not only overseeing the largest expansion of Japan’s
military capabilities since the Second World War but he is
also pushing his ‘new capitalism’ approach as an answer
to shift the nation’s long-stalled economy into high gear.
There is little doubt, thus, that his leadership and policy
decisions will continue to echo in 2024 and beyond.

LOST
Joe Biden
At 81, Biden is the oldest American
President on record. From leading
the American people out of the vi-
cious grips of COVID-19 pandemic
to making much-needed
invest-
ments in the nation’s crumbling
infrastructure,
Biden has had a
busy term in power with a list of
achievements
that will far outlive
his currently low polling numbers.
Volodymyr
Zelenskyy
Zelenskyy has transformed into
a war leader often compared to
Winston Churchill who is leading
Ukraine in a fight against a much
larger invading power, all the while
being courted by leaders who want
to be seen helping Ukraine in its
‘democracy vs authoritarianism’
war.
Recep Tayyip
Erdogan
From the war in Ukraine to conflict
in Gaza, Erdogan has sought to
insert himself as a mediating figure
with varying degrees of success.
With his election victory in 2023,
Erdogan is expected to continue
dominating regional & global poli-
tics in 2024 & in years to come.
Luiz Inácio
Lula da Silva
Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, popu-
larly known as Lula, has remained
true to his promise & within first 6
months of his rule, deforestation
activities within Amazon have fallen
by 34% compared to the year prior.
And this is only one part of his
agenda as a climate champion.
Benjamin
Netanyahu
Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu,
is on this list because of his global
influence. Depending on how he
charts a path through this ongoing
conflict, Netanyahu could bring un-
rest and war back to West Asia on a
scale not seen since the US ended
its decades-long war on terror.
FORBES MOST
POWERFUL WOMEN
TIME LISTS 4 SOUTH
ASIANS AS INFLUENTIAL
NIRMALA SITHARAMAN (RANKED 32)
Nirmala Sitharaman, 64, is a senior figure in the
BJP and has been India’s Minister of Finance and
Minister of Corporate Affairs since 2019. Sithara-
man served as the 28th Defence Minister from

Defence Minister Finance Minister after Indira
Gandhi. In 2022, Forbes ranked her 36th.
SHAH RUKH KHAN
Bollywood’s King Khan made a return to the big
screen this year with director Siddharth Anand’s
Pathan alongside Deepika Padukone and John
Abraham. The ambitious action thriller is among
the highest-grossing
Indian films ever & Khan was
a big reason why. Apart from his work in films, he
is also committed to philanthropy.
ROSHNI NADAR MALHOTRA (RANKED 60)
Roshni Nadar Malhotra, 42, the chairperson of
HCL Technologies,
is making history as the first
woman to lead a listed IT company in India. She is
recognised as the richest woman in India, accord-
ing to IIFL Wealth Hurun India Rich List (2019).
Ranked among the world’s most powerful women
by Forbes, holding the 60th position in 2023.
SS RAJAMOULI
One of India’s biggest film-makers ever, this direc-
tor has helped bring Telugu cinema and by exten-
sion South Indian cinema, into the global spotlight.
While the Baahubali films were groundbreaking
in
their own right, 2022’s RRR catapulted Rajamouli
to global fame after the track Naatu Naatu won the
Academy Award for Best Original Song.
SOMA MONDAL (RANKED 70)
Soma Mondal, 60, is the Chairperson of the Steel
Authority of India, making history as the 1st woman
in this role since Jan 2021. Mondal’s career mile-
stones include being the first woman Functional
Director and Chairman at SAIL. She was honoured
as ‘CEO of the Year’ at ETPrime Women Leader-
ship Awards in 2023. She ranks 70th on the list.
PADMA LAKSHMI
As the longtime host of reality cooking show Top
Chef, watching Padma Lakshmi on screen has
been a fixture for an entire generation of television
viewers. She is also an author, actor & activ-
ist. The ease with which she talks about food on
camera is tempered with a steely resolve when it
comes to talking about her difficult childhood.
KIRAN MAZUMDAR SHAW (RANKED 76)
Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw,
70, is a prominent Indian
billionaire entrepreneur.
She founded and led
Biocon Limited and Biocon Biologics Limited in
Bangalore, India. Besides her role in the biotech-
nology companies, she was the ex- chairperson of
the Indian IIM, Bangalore. She ranks 76th in the
Forbes List of powerful women 2023.
SHERRY REHMAN
As Pakistan’s Minister for Climate Change, Sherry
Rehman made waves at COP27, the UN Cli-
mate Summit held in Egypt in 2022. At the time,
Pakistan was suffering from a flood that killed more
than 1,700 people. During the summit, Rehman
bravely fought on behalf of vulnerable communities
that face the brunt of the climate crisis.
LEADING THE
PACK...
Giorgia Meloni
The Italian PM may be a relative newcomer to the halls of power as compared to some of the
other heavy-hitters on this list but her influence on the world stage, specifically the politics
of Europe, cannot be understated. This is not just because she leads a highly developed
manufacturing-based
economy but also because of what she represents. Given that her
party’s roots in the fascist past of Italy, it was widely expected that Meloni would lead Italy and
Europe along with it down a path of regressive policymaking that would only serve to amplify
the tensions that are threatening to split apart the European Union.
Narendra Modi
PM Narendra Modi made this list for leading a new India that has transformed from being
a powerful regional player to a dominant global power & respected voice of reason on
world stage. 2023 has been a busy year for India, from acting as representative
of Global
South during G20 summit to demonstrating
the wisdom of its multi alignment strategy by
becoming a bridge between various poles of power in int’l system during a time of war.
And leading from the forefront is the PM, who is widely expected to gain another term in
power, come 2024, which can only see India catapulted to new heights of development.
A leader is one who knows the way,
goes the way and shows the way.

feat in the Rajasthan as-
sembly elections in the

on the inauguration of
Jat community’s Dhar-
amshala in Kaman of
Deeg district and on the
sacrifice day of Maha-

Singh said that he wanted
to put forward a bitter
truth before the society
and highlighted the issue
of unity in the society.
“I want to tell the bitter
truth. The latest example
is the recent assembly
elections. There is an old
saying that ‘Kah Jaat hai
Jaat marai, Kah marai
Kartar,’ but Kartar did
not kill me. Rather, those
who should not have;
killed me. Elections
come and go. I worked
for all communities. Eve-
ryone also voted and
Jatav community openly
gave 80 to 90 % votes to
me which was beyond
expectation. This had not
happened till date. One
more thing I would like
to tell you is that we have
a feeling of jealousy. We
are saddened by our own
sorrows and are even un-
happy with other’s ela-
tion or happiness.
Community should
have a competing spirit
that if someone is earning
Rs 100, then we should
bring also earn Rs 200.
Unless that ability comes,
we will not be able to
move forward,” he said.

STRANGE SITUATION IN RAJ BUREAUCRACY
11 IAS on APO, many babus are burdened with multiple charges!

Jaipur
t is for the first
time in state’s
administrative
history that 11 IAS offic-
ers are on APO at the

Vishal, Pukhraj Sen,
Gaurav Budhania, Ria
Dabi, Ravi Kumar, AN

Ravindra. Among these,
four officials were put on

the new government
came to power while one
official was put on APO
during elections. Mean-
while, there are six offic-
ers of the 2021 batch who
have not been given new
posting after completion
of training.
Similarly, this too is
happening for the first
time that three major de-
partments are at the
mercy of the almighty
because the reins of these
departments have not
been handed to anyone
by DoP. Veenu Gupta
was Additional Chief
Secretary of two major
departments - Industries
and Mines. But she opted
for VRS and became
RERA Chairman. How-
ever, the charge of her
departments have not
been handed to any of-
ficer. Interestingly, both
these departments do not
have Secretaries also.
When in November
2023, Veenu Gupta had
gone on a week long
leave, the charge of these
departments were hand-
ed to other Secretaries,
but this time around, the
department is carrying on
its working without any
‘Head’ for the past
twenty days.
On the other hand,
Secretary of Women and
Child Welfare Depart-
ment - Jitendra Upad-
hyay - also retired in

BUDDHA
ECONOMIC
DREAMS
Despite being
economically vigilant,
there is no denying that
a common voter gets
cheated every time in
elections. This can be
understood from this
context that the size
of GDP in the ever-
increasing trillion dollars
is considered by the
common man as the main
basis of his economic
development and the gap
between the rich and the
poor also increases.
Isn’t all this to sell
economic dreams in a new
way? It hurts even more
when we set a deadline
of 2047 for a rise in per
capita income, despite
becoming the fifth largest
economy, and dream
that in the 100th year of
independence, we will
definitely be a developed
nation. From all this, it is
imperative to understand
that perhaps now selling
economic dreams will
gradually go deep into the
roots of Indian democratic
systems and it will be very
difficult for a common
Indian voter to get out of it.
Therefore, democracies
in this country will now
have to present a more
analytical approach to
economic policies during
elections. The common
voter will also have to
be more aware of his
economic rights as he has
now started understanding
the economic burden of
elections and due to this,
he is giving priority to the
interest of the country by
bypassing his personal
preferences.

REBELS FROM RED
SEA DISRUPTIONS
CONFLICT, DISCORD MAR
THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT
he Red Sea faces heightened tensions with
yet another drone attack targeting a cargo
ship en route to India, attributed to the Yem-
en-based Houthi rebels. This marks a concerning
pattern of assaults on vessels navigating one of the
busiest sea routes. The repeated strikes bear signifi-
cant political and economic implications. On the
political front, these attacks intensify regional insta-
bility, potentially straining diplomatic relations. Eco-
nomically, disruptions to maritime trade can lead to
increased insurance costs and impact global supply
chains, particularly given the Red Sea’s strategic im-
portance for shipping. As nations grapple with the
aftermath, addressing the root causes becomes para-
mount to safeguarding both political stability and
economic interests in this critical maritime corridor.
The Iran-backed rebels began targeting this sea
route after the Gaza war began in October. They first
seized a cargo vessel claiming that it belonged to
Israel. Ballistic missiles and drones were later used
to target other commercial vessels. These attacks are
Houthis’ way to protest Israeli attack on Gaza.
T
n the midst of the festive season, Christmas,
traditionally a time of love and peace, finds
itself overshadowed by conflicts in various
parts of the world. The resonance of Jesus Christ’s
message appears muffled amidst the ongoing strife
between Hamas and the Israelis, particularly evi-
dent in the war-torn Gaza region. Bethlehem, the
birthplace of Christ, bears witness to a somber at-
mosphere, devoid of the usual festive cheer—miss-
ing are the iconic Christmas tree, vibrant lights, and
the joyous crowds.
Shifting focus to India, the celebration of Christ-
mas takes on a po-
litical hue, notably
with the BJP’s out-
reach to Christians
in Kerala. However,
this political gesture
occurs against a
backdrop of con-
cerning statistics.
The United Chris-
tian Forum reported
525 attacks on the
community in the
first eight months of
2023, despite Chris-
tians constituting
only 2.3 percent of
the country’s popu-
lation. Uttar Pradesh
leads in the number
of attacks, followed
by Chhattisgarh,
Jharkhand, and Har-
yana—all situated in
the north. These fig-
ures underscore a
trend that the BJP must address if it has to make
inroads in Kerala where the party is a fringe player.
It is not that the BJP cannot win over Christians.
It has ruled Goa where Christians for over 25 per-
cent of the state’s 14.59 lakh population. Goa can
be used as an example for changing the perception
in Kerala which has over 18 percent Christians.
As we celebrate the season of goodwill, it’s im-
perative to reflect on the challenges faced globally
and locally, ensuring that the true essence of Christ-
mas, marked by love and harmony, prevails over
discord and strife.

ommon In-
dians these
days are en-
thusiastical-
ly engaged
in the democratic process,
actively exercising their
right to vote in every elec-
tion and shaping the future
of their nation with re-
sounding collective voic-
es. But now a common
man considers the finan-
cial burden of elections a
major obstacle to his eco-
nomic development.
For this reason, the split
verdict is almost wiped out
of Indian democracy. In
addition, the common In-
dian’s perception is in-
creasingly influenced and
analyzed by various eco-
nomic ideologies, and
amidst this challenge, he
wants to select a govern-
ment for his country or
state that can make him
capable of fulfilling eco-
nomic dreams.
He no longer wants to
maintain the false pride of
economic prosperity.
The reason is that the
economic struggle of near-
ly three generations of this
75-year-old independent
country is still in its infan-
cy. India is the world’s
largest democratic country
and a source of perpetual
pride, but it is also crucial
to understand that during
elections, the cost per voter
is comparatively double
that of the daily economic
standard of living.
According to a report,
during the general elec-
tions of 2019, the cost per
voter was about 8 USD,
while in 2022–23, four
years after that election, the
per capita income in India
was approximately 3 USD,
or about Rs 250 per day.
These figures highlight
that Indian elections are
becoming very expensive,
and due to the scarcity of
financial resources, the
economic cost of these
elections poses a hindrance
to the development of the
common Indian.
Now the time has come
whenitshouldalsobenoted
that if the life of a common
Indian has not become fi-
nancially prosperous in the
last 75 years, then some
problems are usually men-
tioned in this context: a bur-
geoning population, con-
tinuous unemployment,
surging inflation, over-reli-
anceontheagriculturalsec-
tor, and a lack of quality
education. But now, why
not also integrate the vari-
ous electoral expenses of
thecountryintoallofthese?
In the country’s first
general election, the cost
per voter was 60 paise, and
then Rs 17 in 2004. How-
ever, this cost remained Rs
2 per voter until 1985. It is
crucial to note that during
the first general election in
1952, the total number of
voters in India was around
17 crore, which has in-
creased to approximately
90 crore in the 2019 gen-
eral election.
This means that in the
17 general elections since
independence, the number
of voters has increased
more than five times, while
the electoral expenses in-
curred on them have been
much higher.
According to various re-
ports, the total expenditure
on Indian general elections
in 2019 was around Rs
55,000 crores, whereas the
cost of the first general
election in 1952 was ap-
proximately Rs 11 crores.
It is astonishing to note
that the general election in
India in 2019 was more
expensive than the US
presidential election.
Recently, when the results
of elections in five states
came, it was once again
seen that there was no di-
vided mandate in any state.
Now, if this democratic
result is analyzed in light
of economic considera-
tions, then it once again
proves prominently that
the public wants to bear the
financial burden of elec-
tions only after 5 years.
Secondly, it was also
seen that the schemes for
the development of the
common man, even if they
were populist, got the sup-
port of the public.
The context behind this
mayhavebeenthatthecom-
mon man wants some facili-
ties in his personal life apart
frominfrastructuredevelop-
ment, like girl education,
free or subsidized health
care, social security, mobile
and technology, employees’
pension schemes, etc.
When the economic ac-
counts of the states were
measured before the elec-
tions, many states lagged
in creating infrastructure
because most of their ex-
penditure was towards so-
cial schemes, and they also
kept getting burdened with
financial debt.
On the contrary, if some
states were successful in
enriching the infrastruc-
ture and expanding social
schemes, then the demo-
cratic mandate in those
states would result in a
one-party majority.
This is a clear indicator
of the fact that in elections,
voters are influenced only
by economic considera-
tions and not by any other
objective or narrative.

Fumio Kishida
Insofar as transformative leadership goes, few can match the standard set
by Japanese PM Fumio Kishida who is presently revolutionising Japan’s
foreign policy direction, pivoting away from the nation’s post Second War
pacifism towards a more assertive approach that is unafraid of getting
involved in complicated geopolitical clashes.

Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu,
is on this list because of his global

that face the brunt of the climate crisis.
LEADING THE
PACK...
Giorgia Meloni
The Italian PM may be a relative newcomer to the halls of power as compared to some of the
other heavy-hitters on this list but her influence on the world stage, specifically the politics
of Europe, cannot be understated. This is not just because she leads a highly developed
manufacturing-based economy but also because of what she represents. Given that her
party’s roots in the fascist past of Italy, it was widely expected that Meloni would lead Italy and
Europe along with it down a path of regressive policymaking that would only serve to amplify
the tensions that are threatening to split apart the European Union.
Narendra Modi
PM Narendra Modi made this list for leading a new India that has transformed from being
a powerful regional player to a dominant global power respected voice of reason on
world stage. 2023 has been a busy year for India, from acting as representative of Global
South during G20 summit to demonstrating the wisdom of its multi alignment strategy by
becoming a bridge between various poles of power in int’l system during a time of war.
And leading from the forefront is the PM, who is widely expected to gain another term in
power, come 2024, which can only see India catapulted to new heights of development.
A leader is one who knows the way,
goes the way and shows the way.

Fumio Kishida Insofar as transformative leadership goes, few can match the standard set by Japanese PM Fumio Kishida who is presently revolutionising Japan’s foreign policy direction, pivoting away from the nation’s post Second War pacifism towards a more assertive approach that is unafraid of getting involved in complicated geopolitical clashes. On the domestic front, Kishida is not only overseeing the largest expansion of Japan’s military capabilities since the Second World War but he is also pushing his ‘new capitalism’ approach as an answer to shift the nation’s long-stalled economy into high gear. There is little doubt, thus, that his leadership and policy decisions will continue to echo in 2024 and beyond. From leading the American people out of the vi- cious grips of COVID-19 pandemic to making much-needed invest- ments in the nation’s crumbling infrastructure, Biden has had a busy term in power with a list of achievements that will far outlive his currently low polling numbers. Volodymyr Zelenskyy Zelenskyy has transformed into a war leader often compared to Winston Churchill who is leading Ukraine in a fight against a much larger invading power, all the while being courted by leaders who want to be seen helping Ukraine in its ‘democracy vs authoritarianism’ war. Recep Tayyip Erdogan From the war in Ukraine to conflict in Gaza, Erdogan has sought to insert himself as a mediating figure with varying degrees of success. With his election victory in 2023, Erdogan is expected to continue dominating regional & global poli- tics in 2024 & in years to come. Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, popu- larly known as Lula, has remained true to his promise & within first 6 months of his rule, deforestation activities within Amazon have fallen by 34% compared to the year prior. And this is only one part of his agenda as a climate champion. Benjamin Netanyahu Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu, is on this list because of his global influence. Depending on how he charts a path through this ongoing conflict, Netanyahu could bring un- rest and war back to West Asia on a scale not seen since the US ended its decades-long war on terror. SS RAJAMOULI One of India’s biggest film-makers ever, this direc- tor has helped bring Telugu cinema and by exten- sion South Indian cinema, into the global spotlight. While the Baahubali films were groundbreaking in their own right, 2022’s RRR catapulted Rajamouli to global fame after the track Naatu Naatu won the Academy Award for Best Original Song. SOMA MONDAL (RANKED 70) Soma Mondal, 60, is the Chairperson of the Steel Authority of India, making history as the 1st woman in this role since Jan 2021. SHERRY REHMAN As Pakistan’s Minister for Climate Change, Sherry Rehman made waves at COP27, the UN Cli- mate Summit held in Egypt in 2022. At the time, Pakistan was suffering from a flood that killed more than 1,700 people. During the summit, Rehman bravely fought on behalf of vulnerable communities that face the brunt of the climate crisis. LEADING THE PACK... Giorgia Meloni The Italian PM may be a relative newcomer to the halls of power as compared to some of the other heavy-hitters on this list but her influence on the world stage, specifically the politics of Europe, cannot be understated. This is not just because she leads a highly developed manufacturing-based economy but also because of what she represents. Given that her party’s roots in the fascist past of Italy, it was widely expected that Meloni would lead Italy and Europe along with it down a path of regressive policymaking that would only serve to amplify the tensions that are threatening to split apart the European Union. Narendra Modi PM Narendra Modi made this list for leading a new India that has transformed from being a powerful regional player to a dominant global power & respected voice of reason on world stage. 2023 has been a busy year for India, from acting as representative of Global South during G20 summit to demonstrating the wisdom of its multi alignment strategy by becoming a bridge between various poles of power in int’l system during a time of war. And leading from the forefront is the PM, who is widely expected to gain another term in power, come 2024, which can only see India catapulted to new heights of development. A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way and shows the way. —John C. SELF-ASSESSMENT Vishvendra Singh reflects on election loss First India Bureau Deeg n Monday, for- mer MLA of Deeg-Kumher and member of erstwhile royal family of Bharatpur - Vishvendra Singh - made public the pain and aguish on his recent de- feat in the Rajasthan as- sembly elections in the programme organised on the inauguration of Jat community’s Dhar- amshala in Kaman of Deeg district and on the sacrifice day of Maha- raja Surajmal. Singh said that he wanted to put forward a bitter truth before the society and highlighted the issue of unity in the society. “I want to tell the bitter truth. The latest example is the recent assembly elections. There is an old saying that ‘Kah Jaat hai Jaat marai, Kah marai Kartar,’ but Kartar did not kill me. Rather, those who should not have; killed me. Elections come and go. I worked for all communities. Eve- ryone also voted and Jatav community openly gave 80 to 90 % votes to me which was beyond expectation. This had not happened till date. One more thing I would like to tell you is that we have a feeling of jealousy. We are saddened by our own sorrows and are even un- happy with other’s ela- tion or happiness. Community should have a competing spirit that if someone is earning Rs 100, then we should bring also earn Rs 200. Unless that ability comes, we will not be able to move forward,” he said. • 3. STRANGE SITUATION IN RAJ BUREAUCRACY 11 IAS on APO, many babus are burdened with multiple charges! Rajendra Chhabra Jaipur t is for the first time in state’s administrative history that 11 IAS offic- ers are on APO at the same moment! These are Kuldeep Ranka, Gaurav Goyal,Arti Dogra, Rajan Vishal, Pukhraj Sen, Gaurav Budhania, Ria Dabi, Ravi Kumar, AN Somnath, JP Chan- drashekhar and SG Ravindra. Among these, four officials were put on APO from the CMO after the new government came to power while one official was put on APO during elections. Mean- while, there are six offic- ers of the 2021 batch who have not been given new posting after completion of training. Similarly, this too is happening for the first time that three major de- partments are at the mercy of the almighty because the reins of these departments have not been handed to anyone by DoP. Veenu Gupta was Additional Chief Secretary of two major departments - Industries and Mines. But she opted for VRS and became RERA Chairman. How- ever, the charge of her departments have not been handed to any of- ficer. Interestingly, both these departments do not have Secretaries also. When in November 2023, Veenu Gupta had gone on a week long leave, the charge of these departments were hand- ed to other Secretaries, but this time around, the department is carrying on its working without any ‘Head’ for the past twenty days. On the other hand, Secretary of Women and Child Welfare Depart- ment - Jitendra Upad- hyay - also retired in November 30, 2023 and the charge of this post has not been handed to anyone. Interestingly, adminis- trative experts consider the Situation surrounding 1998 batch IAS T. Ravi- kanth unique since he is handling the responsi- bilities of four posts- Principal Secretary CMO, UDH, LSG and Medical Education. It is being said that Ravikanth is so busy these days with the work in the CMO that the work in other depart- ments has come to a halt. As of now, no one can say for certain when will the situation improve for the bureaucracy. Chief Secretary Usha Sharma also has merely four working days left and since there will be holi- day on December 30 and 31, hence CS Usha Shar- ma will retire on Friday, 29 December. • 4. TOP TWEETS SPIRITUAL SPEAK We will develop and cultivate the liberation of mind by lovingkindness, make it our vehicle, make it our basis, stabilize it, exercise ourselves in it, and fully perfect it. BUDDHA ECONOMIC DREAMS Despite being economically vigilant, there is no denying that a common voter gets cheated every time in elections. This can be understood from this context that the size of GDP in the ever- increasing trillion dollars is considered by the common man as the main basis of his economic development and the gap between the rich and the poor also increases. Isn’t all this to sell economic dreams in a new way? It hurts even more when we set a deadline of 2047 for a rise in per capita income, despite becoming the fifth largest economy, and dream that in the 100th year of independence, we will definitely be a developed nation. From all this, it is imperative to understand that perhaps now selling economic dreams will gradually go deep into the roots of Indian democratic systems and it will be very difficult for a common Indian voter to get out of it. Therefore, democracies in this country will now have to present a more analytical approach to economic policies during elections. The common voter will also have to be more aware of his economic rights as he has now started understanding the economic burden of elections and due to this, he is giving priority to the interest of the country by bypassing his personal preferences. NO SPLIT MANDATE Indian voters understand the financial burden of elections IN-DEPTH STOPPING HOUTHI REBELS FROM RED SEA DISRUPTIONS CONFLICT, DISCORD MAR THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT he Red Sea faces heightened tensions with yet another drone attack targeting a cargo ship en route to India, attributed to the Yem- en-based Houthi rebels. This marks a concerning pattern of assaults on vessels navigating one of the busiest sea routes. The repeated strikes bear signifi- cant political and economic implications. On the political front, these attacks intensify regional insta- bility, potentially straining diplomatic relations. Eco- nomically, disruptions to maritime trade can lead to increased insurance costs and impact global supply chains, particularly given the Red Sea’s strategic im- portance for shipping. As nations grapple with the aftermath, addressing the root causes becomes para- mount to safeguarding both political stability and economic interests in this critical maritime corridor. The Iran-backed rebels began targeting this sea route after the Gaza war began in October. They first seized a cargo vessel claiming that it belonged to Israel. Ballistic missiles and drones were later used to target other commercial vessels. These attacks are Houthis’ way to protest Israeli attack on Gaza. T n the midst of the festive season, Christmas, traditionally a time of love and peace, finds itself overshadowed by conflicts in various parts of the world. The resonance of Jesus Christ’s message appears muffled amidst the ongoing strife between Hamas and the Israelis, particularly evi- dent in the war-torn Gaza region. Bethlehem, the birthplace of Christ, bears witness to a somber at- mosphere, devoid of the usual festive cheer—miss- ing are the iconic Christmas tree, vibrant lights, and the joyous crowds. Shifting focus to India, the celebration of Christ- mas takes on a po- litical hue, notably with the BJP’s out- reach to Christians in Kerala. However, this political gesture occurs against a backdrop of con- cerning statistics. The United Chris- tian Forum reported 525 attacks on the community in the first eight months of 2023, despite Chris- tians constituting only 2.3 percent of the country’s popu- lation. Uttar Pradesh leads in the number of attacks, followed by Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and Har- yana—all situated in the north. These fig- ures underscore a trend that the BJP must address if it has to make inroads in Kerala where the party is a fringe player. It is not that the BJP cannot win over Christians. It has ruled Goa where Christians for over 25 per- cent of the state’s 14.59 lakh population. Goa can be used as an example for changing the perception in Kerala which has over 18 percent Christians. As we celebrate the season of goodwill, it’s im- perative to reflect on the challenges faced globally and locally, ensuring that the true essence of Christ- mas, marked by love and harmony, prevails over discord and strife. I The United Christian Forum reported 525 attacks on the community in the first eight months of 2023, despite Christians constituting only 2.3 percent of the country’s population. Uttar Pradesh leads in the number of attacks, followed by Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and Haryana—all situated in the north ommon In- dians these days are en- thusiastical- ly engaged in the democratic process, actively exercising their right to vote in every elec- tion and shaping the future of their nation with re- sounding collective voic- es. But now a common man considers the finan- cial burden of elections a major obstacle to his eco- nomic development. For this reason, the split verdict is almost wiped out of Indian democracy. In addition, the common In- dian’s perception is in- creasingly influenced and analyzed by various eco- nomic ideologies, and amidst this challenge, he wants to select a govern- ment for his country or state that can make him capable of fulfilling eco- nomic dreams. He no longer wants to maintain the false pride of economic prosperity. The reason is that the economic struggle of near- ly three generations of this 75-year-old independent country is still in its infan- cy. India is the world’s largest democratic country and a source of perpetual pride, but it is also crucial to understand that during elections, the cost per voter is comparatively double that of the daily economic standard of living. According to a report, during the general elec- tions of 2019, the cost per voter was about 8 USD, while in 2022–23, four years after that election, the per capita income in India was approximately 3 USD, or about Rs 250 per day. These figures highlight that Indian elections are becoming very expensive, and due to the scarcity of financial resources, the economic cost of these elections poses a hindrance to the development of the common Indian. Now the time has come whenitshouldalsobenoted that if the life of a common Indian has not become fi- nancially prosperous in the last 75 years, then some problems are usually men- tioned in this context: a bur- geoning population, con- tinuous unemployment, surging inflation, over-reli- anceontheagriculturalsec- tor, and a lack of quality education. But now, why not also integrate the vari- ous electoral expenses of thecountryintoallofthese? In the country’s first general election, the cost per voter was 60 paise, and then Rs 17 in 2004. How- ever, this cost remained Rs 2 per voter until 1985. It is crucial to note that during the first general election in 1952, the total number of voters in India was around 17 crore, which has in- creased to approximately 90 crore in the 2019 gen- eral election. This means that in the 17 general elections since independence, the number of voters has increased more than five times, while the electoral expenses in- curred on them have been much higher. According to various re- ports, the total expenditure on Indian general elections in 2019 was around Rs 55,000 crores, whereas the cost of the first general election in 1952 was ap- proximately Rs 11 crores. It is astonishing to note that the general election in India in 2019 was more expensive than the US presidential election. Recently, when the results of elections in five states came, it was once again seen that there was no di- vided mandate in any state. Now, if this democratic result is analyzed in light of economic considera- tions, then it once again proves prominently that the public wants to bear the financial burden of elec- tions only after 5 years. Secondly, it was also seen that the schemes for the development of the common man, even if they were populist, got the sup- port of the public. The context behind this mayhavebeenthatthecom- mon man wants some facili- ties in his personal life apart frominfrastructuredevelop- ment, like girl education, free or subsidized health care, social security, mobile and technology, employees’ pension schemes, etc. When the economic ac- counts of the states were measured before the elec- tions, many states lagged in creating infrastructure because most of their ex- penditure was towards so- cial schemes, and they also kept getting burdened with financial debt. On the contrary, if some states were successful in enriching the infrastruc- ture and expanding social schemes, then the demo- cratic mandate in those states would result in a one-party majority. This is a clear indicator of the fact that in elections, voters are influenced only by economic considera- tions and not by any other objective or narrative. THE VIEWS EXPRESSED BY THE AUTHOR ARE PERSONAL India is the world’s largest democratic country and a source of perpetual pride, but it is also crucial to understand that during elections in this country, the cost per voter is comparatively double that of the daily economic standard of living. According to a report, during 2019 general elections, cost per voter was about 8 USD, while in 2022–23, four years after that election, per capita income in India was approximately 3 USD or about Rs 250 per day C Modi government is making the dreams of the poor come true. The role of Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana in helping a woman send her son abroad for studies is a good news. In the last 5 years, about 67% of the total number of loans sanctioned under PMMY have been provided to women. Through this, the women power of our country is becoming strong and self-reliant. • 8. Narendra Modi PM Narendra Modi made this list for leading a new India that has transformed from being a powerful regional player to a dominant global power respected voice of reason on world stage.
