2. Media Ownership - Politics of
Convenience
Media is one of the potent tools to launch a robust political
narrative in any society. The information that is relayed and then
consumed by the audience has a direct bearing on the public
opinion. This information is critical for a democracy to survive
and dissent to thrive. However, in India, there has been a
worrying trend in recent times, when media has, more often
than not, come under scrutiny for drifting away from its purpose
to relay information and refrain from catering to any specific
interests.

3. Channels favoring political parties.
• Dr. Subhash Chandra, Zee News’ co-owner, is
an independent Member of Rajya Sabha,
though he got elected with the help of BJP
lawmakers in the state of Haryana. Zee News,
which is among the top four Hindi news
channels in the country and is largely
perceived to be sympathetic to the BJP
.
• Rajeev Chandrashekar is a member of BJP
, the
ruling Bhartiya Janata party and represents it
as a member of the Rajya Sabha. He
pioneered Republic TV, which commands a
sizable percentage of the English news
segment.

4. Need to regulate political capture of the media.
• The increasing control of the media by the government and the ruling party is an
ubiquitous phenomenon that has come in handy to have a hold on the public. Apart
from stifling the discourse and limiting the freedom of opinion, it has also blinded the
people from knowing their real interests.
• Today, there are no regulatory safeguards against political control over media in India.
The Indian laws do not restrict political ownership in television or print media with the
exception of radio, where political parties or members thereof are disqualified from
applying for a license to operate a radio station.

6. Criminalization of politics.
Criminalization of politics has become a headache for the Indian
democracy and is more vicious than terrorism .
According to the law – even individual who have criminal cases pending against
them can take part in elections as Indian law doesn’t bar those who are facing
trials for serious criminal offence also and what’s more shocking and rather
disgraceful is that these people even after committing serious criminal offences
make their approach to the Parliament and Assemblies, which is the highest
governing body of the country. Unfortunately, who we elect to make the law are
themselves, criminals, before the law.

7. Vikas Dubey encounter case.
• The diseased, Dubey’s criminal life spanned 30 years and has been
accused of 62 criminal cases.
• He was the prime accused in the murder of BJP leader Santosh Shukla.
• He built his crimedom in close association with local politicians and in
return he ensured a large chunk of votes for them in return for
protection from law.
• He was preparing for contesting for UP state polls himself in 2022. He
had simultaneously being trying to get into the BJP
.
• In mid 1990’s he was a BSP member, and party Chief Mayawati was the
UP Chief Minister.
• Vikas Dubey would decide who would contest The Panchayat Election
in Bikru Village and the candidates would win unopposed.
• He was in the last lap of transition from the world crime to politics and
already had by his own admission, the police administration under his
control

8. Rivalry in politics.
Political party rivalries are not to be confused with rival family
houses within a nation, or warring factions from different
nations. This list will not indicate every rival political party within
a nation, such as in multiple-party governments. Only the most
notable and significant political parties are presented.

9. Kangana Vs Maharashtra Govt.
• Kangana Ranaut took up the issue of nepotism in Bollywood
after the death by suicide of Sushant Singh has turned the
narrative to herself.
• She turned this into her personal battle and turned the
personal into the political at lightning speed.
• Ranaut has long worn her admiration for BJP and PM Modi. It
seems now that she has aligned herself with its purpose too.

events immediately preceding Sushant’s death.
• The BMC, ruled by Shiv Sena blundered in it’s attempt at

• Kangana’s offscreen power is off course, the Maharashtra
Govt and more specifically CM Uddhav Thackeray.

10. Congress Vs BJP.
Rahul Gandhi interrupted his speech, walked across
the floor of the House and leaned in to hug PM Modi.
• PM Modi is known to target the Nehru-
Gandhi family in his speeches, especially in
Parliament. It appeared to be an attempt to
project himself as a victim and the ruling party
leaders as aggressors.
• Gandhi’s hug-and-wink gesture was a subtle
attempt to poke fun at the Prime Minister’s
penchant for hugging world leaders, a
gesture meant to showcase his proximity with
the who’s who in international politics.

11. Religion based politics.!
In India, different political parties represent the interests of different caste
groups. A majority of Indians prefer political leaders from their own caste,
tribe or religion, according to a 2018 study, indicating how identity politics
plays a significant role in state and general elections. This was especially so
among non-literates across caste and religious groups.
The mainstream media also reports how political parties, manipulate the
religious sentiments of the people for their own benefits and to harm the
rival or opponent party. This caste based politics can be seen when parties
sees the Muslim minorities as vote banks only, and they uses them to rebel
against the government in power.

12. Tahir Hussain case..!
• Chemical found from suspended AAP councilor Tahir
Hussain house was acid.
• Mobile clips of Tahir on the rooftop were also not
doctored.
• It says he used his ‘muscle power and political clout to
act as a kingpin in planning, instigating and fanning the
flames of communal conflagration.
• Mr. Hussain said he belonged to ‘Aam Aadmi Party’ and
was a ‘victim of circumstances’, as he had been caught
up in a political cross-fire, and the allegations levelled
against him were nothing but a political blame game to
malign his image.

13. The Kashmir issue.!
All the religious biased politics which has lead to so
many riots in Kashmir is always reported by the media
widely.
• Political parties took advantage of the religious
difference in Kashmir and instigated riots and
provided money to youth to throw stones at the
army.
• When the Centre stripped Jammu and Kashmir of
special status under Article 370 of the Indian
Constitution, shops had been shut in protest for
much of the day for 3 months.
• Ask shopkeepers who they think is behind the
blasts and the arson and they all have the same
answer: “agencies”. “There are so many
government agencies working here,” said an angry
old cloth merchant in downtown Srinagar. “They
come and burn shops in the evening to defame
militants.”

14. Relations with other countries.!
India is land where people believe in cooperation and maintain
healthy relationship with its neighbor. India has always been
known as a “peace-loving country”. India has official political
relations with most nations. Indian mainstream media always
shows how India is coping up with foreign relations, sometimes
these can evolve to be issues which are reported by media
widely.

15. Relations with china.!
• The outbreak of Coronavirus pandemic from Wuhan
has already hampered the relations. Following the
straining of the bonds, both the sides have been
blaming each other of the conflict on LAC.
• It was reported that China had allegedly attempted to
gain the important heights across LAC, which was
failed by Indian troops, as they were in advantage of
acquiring important points near LAC.
• India has banned more than 250 Chinese apps, and
on 16 October, it had banned the import of AC's,
Refrigerators and Coolers from China.
• There was even a conference held in Moscow, Russia,
on September 5 between the Defence Minister of
India, Rajnath Singh and Chinese Army General, Wei
Fenghe, but that also ended up with no success.

16. Relations with Nepal.!
• The relations were strained during mid 2020, when it
was reported that a firing took place by the Nepalese
police across Indo-Nepalese border of Bihar on July
12.
• KP Sharma Oli said about the pandemic of
Coronavirus that "Indian virus was more deadlier"
than the one which spread from Wuhan.
• Indian media stated that the actions of Oli
government were souring the relations, "and these
were being done on the direction of China and
propelled by Chinese ambassador Hou Yanqi".
• The Indian news channels were banned in Nepal after
the media reported this news.

17. Other political issues reported in
media!
• COMMUNAL PROBLEMS-
The list includes many examples like RAM MANDIR ISSUE IN AYODHYA, RIOTS
OF MUZAFFARNAGAR, IKLAKH DADRI CASE OVER BEEF, caste issues, tiff always
going on between HINDUS and MUSLIMS over certain trivial issues sometimes.
Political parties takes advantage of this divide , win the election and live in
highlights for another 5 years.
• PAKISTAN-
BOMBARDMENT attacks from their side, fight over KASHMIR, certain military
men dying on the border frequently due to these attacks. Recent example is of
Actors from Pakistan to be allowed for working in BOLLYWOOD or not. Social
media always flooded with comments but no action.

18. • CORRUPTION, BLACK MONEY-
Another very major issue. Due to this common man has to suffer. Only
3% of the population pays income tax and rest 97% enjoys on their
income. Therefore, a major factor responsible for poverty in INDIA.
• INFLATION-
Politics between parties leads to rise in prices of different products, another
suffering factor for a common man. The raw material produced keeps on
spoiling inside the go-down, therefore prices increases. If this does not
happen, each and every individual can get two portions of meals every day
and this will eradicate poverty.

19. CONCLUSION!!
The Indian mainstream media in todays time supports any of
the political parties, this makes them biased in providing any
issues that might not be in favor of the party they support. This
also manipulates the general public very much leaving them
confused whom to support. All the issues mentioned here are
very few of them a wide range of topics are reported by the
media according to the political party they support. This paid
news should stop so that people get to make a wise and clear
decision.
