LAND FERTILITY VS INDUSTRIALISATION
Villagers protest against Oil company’s waste
Mukesh Mathrani
Barmer
undreds of vil-
lagers in Ra-
jasthan’s Bar-
mer district are staging a
protest to save the land
fertility in the region
which is getting damaged
due to the hazardous
chemicals and contami-
nated waste mud which is
being released by the oil
company, working in the
area. Villagers claimed
that they have been fac-
ing the situation for the
past four-five years but
with each passing day it
is constantly increasing
and at present the situa-
tion is that hazardous
chemicals have started
polluting the irrigation
water.
Villagers said that the
company discharged the
contaminated waste mud
containing hazardous
chemicals into the land
by pressure pump ma-
chines inside the waste
pits located near the oil
wells. Due to this, the ir-
rigation water from tube
wells is getting spoiled
which further is not only
affecting the land fertility
but also damaging the
ready crops. Locals from
more than a dozen villag-
ers have been staging a
protest for the past one
week and now they have
announced that if their is-
sue has not been ad-
dressed, they will inten-
sify their protest and cre-
ate hurdles in the com-
pany operations.
Trilokaram Choud-
hary, Sarpanch of Khanji
Ka Tala panchayat, said
that many times they ap-
proached the Cairn Oil
and Gas company offi-
cials and requested them
to take note. Choudhary
said that whenever they
met the authorities, they
blamed them for inter-
rupting industrial devel-
opment in the area.

NCP CHIEF PAWAR
KEEPS OPPOSITION
ON TENTERHOOKS
embers of the Opposition grouping I.N.D.I.A
must be apprehensively watching every
move of Sharad Pawar who is expected to
share the dais with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in
Pune on August 1, the 103rd death anniversary of
Lokmanya Tilak. The award will be conferred on
Modi for awakening the feeling of patriotism among
Indians. If Pawar confers the honour, the setback to
I.N.D.I.Awould be huge. The grouping is totally un-
prepared for that. Nobody can read the wily Maratha
leader’s mind.
Pawar himself is quiet on whether he will attend
the function as chief guest. Sharad Pawar also held
his cards close to his chest after his nephew Ajit Pa-
war and NCPMPPraful Patel met him and urged him
to join the group to support the BJP. This is why the
Opposition grouping fears a shock blow from the
Maratha strongman.
Even if Pawar does not agree to support the BJP,
conferring the honour on Modi would be enough to
demoralise the Opposition.

mismanagement had
fallen so low that last

Saudis were also re-
portedly reluctant to

What has weighed in
favour of Pakistan is
that both Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has allowed
the army chief SyedAsim Munir the space which was
not there during Imran Khan’s tenure.
So far the Saudi-Pakistan ties have failed to harm
the bilateral relations between India and SaudiArabia
and India and the United Arab Emirates. This was
evident from the silent support the two countries ex-
tended after Article 370 was scrapped to alter the
status of JK. So much so, Pakistan was forced to
toe the Saudi line and withdraw from the parallel OIC
which Malaysia and Turkey had considered forming.

ABOUT THE
PLAYERS
India’s spinning combina-
tion also needs to be final-
ized with Chahal, Kuldeep
, Jadeja and Axar in the
mix. A late addition to the
World Cup squad could
be Ravi Ashwin who
provides an off-spinning
option in the lineup.
Axar and Jadeja have the
same skillset and many
feel Ashwin should get the
nod to lend variety and
experience to the spin
attack. After the Windies
trip, besides the Asia Cup,
India has just 3 ODIs left
to play and needs
to find a settled unit.
An important facet of the
2011 World Cup win was
that India had a settled
side and made only a few
changes in the playing 11
all through the Cham-
pionship. Ironically, this
time with just 2 months
left for the World Cup,
only a handful of players
have sure spots while
most of the team
is still rather unclear!

eam India
comfortably
beat theWin-
dies in the
first ODI of
the 3-match series by 5
wickets.Though India stut-
tered in reaching a paltry
target of 115, it had more to
do with their aggressive
style of play which ended
thematchinjust45.5overs!
The magic weaved by In-
dian spinners was way too
much for Windies batsmen
who were dismissed for
their second lowest ODI
score ever against India.
Batting first, Windies
began badly as seamers
Hardik Pandya, Shardul
Thakur and debutant
Mukesh Kumar picked up
a wicket each inside the
first 10 overs. A partner-
ship between captain Shai
Hope and Shimron Het-
myer took them to 88. But
the spin combo of Ravin-
dra Jadeja and Kuldeep
Yadav triggered a dramatic
collapse taking 7 wickets
for 26 runs in just 44 balls!
In reply, India lost Shub-
man Gill early but Ishan
Kishan hit his 4th ODI half
century to guide India to an
easy win. The scorecard
may suggest that India
found it hard to chase as
they lost 5 wickets but it
was more due to extreme
help for spinners from the
pitch.Also, India promoted
its youngsters up the order
to find their batting rhythm.
Rohit Sharma came in at
no.7 and Virat Kohli was
not even needed to bat!
This series, however, is
not just about beating the
Windies who have declined
sharply in the last few years
as a force in limited overs
cricket. Just recently, Win-
dies cricket hit a new low
by failing to qualify for the
upcoming ODIWorld Cup.
As such, it’s a complete
mismatch between these
two sides – while Windies
won’t figure in the World
Cup, India is one of the fa-
vourites!
This series is far more
about finetuning India’s
preparations for the Asia
Cup in August-September
and the World Cup in Oc-
tober-November. India
will like to cement their
best combination going
ahead and the current se-
ries provides an opportu-
nity for many players. Ide-
ally, India would like
Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan
Kishan and Sanju Samson
to find their batting mojo
while Yuzvendra Chahal,
KuldeepYadav and Umran
Malik could get their bowl-
ing rhythm back as they
haven’t played any inter-
national cricket of late.
India’s batting revolves
mainly around Rohit Shar-
ma and Virat Kohli but
there are a few spots up for
grabs to solidify the mid-
dle order. With Rishabh
Pant injured and almost
certain to miss the World
Cup, Sanju Samson and
Ishan Kishan are in line to
stake a claim for that role.
Samson has a terrific bat-
ting average of 66 from 11
One Dayers while Kishan
is among the very few who
have hit a double century
in the 50 over format. If
K.L Rahul, the original re-
placement for Pant, doesn’t
recover in time for theAsia
Cup, it’s a direct Samson-
Kishan contest for the
wicketkeeper spot.
Also, T20 specialist
SuryakumarYadav is vying
for the No 4 spot in the bat-
ting order earlier held by
Shreyas Iyer who is cur-
rentlybattlingabackinjury.
Surya got a good start in the
first ODI against the Wind-
ies but failed to capitalise.
With little time left for the
World Cup, Surya needs to
iron out his chinks quickly
if he’s to be a strong con-
tender to bat at number 4.
The biggest concern for
India is their growing in-
jury list.The latest addition
is Mohammed Siraj who
left for India after the Win-
dies Test series complain-
ing of ankle pain. Current-
ly, the three first-choice
pacers - Bumrah, Shami,
Siraj - are going through
injury concerns. Luckily,
there’s good news on the
Bumrah front as BCCI
claims he may play in the
Ireland T20 series after a
better than expected rehab
at the National Cricket
Academy. Shami is being
rested after the extra work-
load he has shouldered in
Bumrah’s absence.
India’s spinning combi-
nation also needs to be fi-
nalized with Chahal, Kul-
deep , Jadeja and Axar in
the mix. A late addition to
the World Cup squad could
be Ravi Ashwin who pro-
vides an off-spinning op-
tion in the lineup.Axar and
Jadeja have the same skill-
set and many feel Ashwin
should get the nod to lend
variety and experience to
the spin attack.

in less than a month,
Bharatiya Janata Party
(BJP) National President
JP Nadda on Saturday
released a list of the par-
ty’s new central office-
bearers, including fresh
faces as vice presidents
and general secretaries.
The organisational re-
shuffles and new ap-
pointments ahead of the
2024 Lok Sabha polls
are part of the saffron
party’s new social repre-
sentation strategy and is
being seen by political
analysts as an attempt by
the party to project itself
as more inclusive.
The new office bear-
ers include former Ali-

(AMU) vice-chancellor
Tariq Mansoor as one of
its vice presidents. The
appointment of Man-
soor, now a BJP MLC in
Uttar Pradesh, is being
seen as part of the par-
ty’s overtures to Pas-

Muslims.
Kerala leader Abdulla

from the minority com-
munity on the list.
Saroj Pandey, a Rajya

tisgarh; and Lata Usen-
di, a tribal leader from
Chhattisgarh, have been
made vice presidents —
underscoring the party’s
focus on the poll-bound
state where the Con-
gress is in power.
Former UP BJP presi-
dent and Rajya Sabha

one of the two new vice
presidents.
Radha Mohan Agraw-
al, a Rajya Sabha MP
from Uttar Pradesh, is
one of the two new faces

nine general secretaries,
seven of whom retain
their position.
The new secretaries
are Anil Antony, son of
veteran Congress leader

Surendra Singh Nagar

Tasa, Rajya Sabha MPs
from UP and Assam, re-
spectively. Nagar is an
influential Gurjar leader
from western UP while
Tasa has long been the
face of tea tribes in the
northeastern state.
The appointment of
Bandi Sanjay Kumar as
general secretary, weeks
after his removal as the
Telangana BJP presi-
dent, is a possible signal
to the party cadres that
he remains valuable to
the national leadership,
and that his ouster was a

alities in the southern
state, a PTI report said
citing sources.

in the new list.
Arun Singh, Kailash

harad Pawar has become a victim of sta-
tus quo these days. His entire party sym-
pathizes with NDA and Modi, whereas
Pawar physically attended the meeting
of the opposition unit in Bengaluru. But it is said
that he did not bother to speak a word there. Even
though the opposi-
tion leaders had
urged him to speak
in unison, but Pa-
war kept mum. The
BJP top leadership
has bluntly told his
nephew Ajit Pawar
to ‘convince his uncle to join the BJP’s side, as the
graph of the BJP is still not rising in Maharashtra’,
while owing to the burden of Eknath Shinde’s anti-
incumbency, the saffron party itself has to bear the
brunt. So, the BJP top has also made it clear to Ajit
that ‘his party’s leaders will be free from the case
only when the elder Pawar will be inclined towards
the BJP and he will accept a ministerial post at the
Center for Supriya’.
he mutual enmity and factionalism of
Jawaharlal Nehru National Youth Centre
of Congress does not seem to be end-
ing anytime soon as new problems are
emerging day by day. A group, headed by an ex-bu-
reaucrat of Rajasthan, is active in this youth center
and his late mother has been the working president.
The second group is of Purushottam Goyal who is
one of the founding members of this centre, who is
considered very special to Pawan Bansal. The third
group is headed by Praveen Aron. Aron is alleged to
have opened the Nehru International Public School
in its name, calling the bylaws of the center a fraud.
Now the whole matter has reached the Patiala
House Court in Delhi and the court, considering all
these three groups as disputed, has barred them
from work. Seeing this, the Congress high command
has also swung into action. Now it has started the
process of appointing the national president of this
youth centre. It is said that Kharge first talked to Am-
bika Soni, but Soni has flatly refused to take up the
responsibility. So, now Kharge is thinking of giving
this responsibility to Salman Khurshid and after the
name of Khurshid, the leaders of all three controver-
sial factions started revolving around him.

RESTLESS NITISH KUMAR SOFTENING FOR BJP
t is said that no matter how
many references are given
to insults, the pain of old love
remains somewhere. The
remaining grudge has left Nitish Kumar
restless too. Last days when he had a
meeting with his own party’s MP and
Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha,
Harivansh, reliable sources claim that
Harivansh facilitated Nitish’s talks with
the BJP top leadership. It is said
that the BJP top ledershop told
Nitish that ‘you are a politician
of clean image, where are
you getting stuck with the
corrupt. Sooner or later he
(Tejashwi Yadav) will have
to go to jail and at that time
there may be a split in your
party as well.’ It is said that
Nitish has put a condition
of re-alliance with
the BJP that ‘if
Nitish joins
an alliance with the BJP, then along
with the Lok Sabha polls in Bihar, the
assembly elections should also be held
ahead of time.’ But it is said that the top
leadership did not agree. Nitish wants
a guarantee of his CM’s chair in 2024
itself. But BJP has not given up yet. It is
said that the saffron party has proposed
to Nitish that ‘if BJP and JDU form an al-
liance again in the state, then the saffron
party will leave 23 Lok Sabha and 150
assembly seats for Nitish.’ This
proposal is obviously Nitish’s
favorite because if he goes with
‘India’, a coalition of opposition
parties, then it is difficult for
JDU to get so many seats to
contest elections. The 2019
Lok Sabha elections were
fought jointly by BJP JDU in
Bihar and this alliance
won 39 out of
total 40 seats
in the state.

NITISH’S ATTACK ON
CONGRESS?
ecently, the
CM of Bihar
reconstituted
4 commis-
sions and 2 boards
of the state. In this
reorganization, the
former MPs and MLAs
of JDU and RJD have
been adjusted in it. But
it seems that Nitish has
ignored Congress in this
whole exercise. Con-
gress MLC Premchand
Mishra has been made
a member of the San-
skrit Board. While the
Congress had hoped
that there would be talk
of the post of chairman
in any board or com-
mission for him. When
the Congress leaders
lodged their protest in
front of Nitish regard-
ing this, Nitish clarified
‘our fight against BJP
is a major challenge,
we should not wander
on small issues.’ On
last Friday evening,
Gurdeep Sappal came
forward on behalf of
Kharge and explained
to his leaders that ‘right
now two new ministers
are to be appointed in
Bihar from the Congress
quota, and you are do-
ing such small things.

dazzlethenightaway.
If you prefer a more
understated look,
opt for a sequined
clutch or embel-
lished heels to add
a touch of glamour
to your ensemble.
Inject some holiday
cheer into your wardrobe
with playful prints and
patterns. Whether it’s a
Christmas-inspired
sweater with reindeer
motifs or a Hawaiian-
themed floral dress, fes-
tive prints can instantly
put you in the holiday
mood. Mix and match
patterns for a bold and
fashionable statement.
Even during the holi-
days, taking a moment to
unwind is essential. In-
vest in some comfortable
and stylish loungewear
to enjoy cozy moments
by the fireplace or while
sipping hot cocoa. Over-
sized sweaters, joggers,
and soft knit sets are per-
fect for lounging in style.
As you celebrate the
joyous season, consider
embracing sustainable
fashion choices. Opt for
clothing made from eco-
friendly materials, sup-
port local artisans, or
consider renting outfits
for special occasions.
Being conscious about
your fashion choices can
add an extra layer of
meaningfulness to your
holiday celebrations.
Remember, the es-
sence of holiday fashion
is to express yourself and
feel comfortable in your
skin. Embrace the festive
vibes, experiment with
styles, and don’t forget to
spread some joy and
kindness with your daz-
zling holiday outfits.
This season, let your
fashion choices reflect
the magic and excite-
ment of the holidays!

EYE FLU ALERT
HowtoSpot
Prevent
Conjunctivitis
onjunctivitis, com-
monly known as
pink eye or eye flu,
is a condition that
can be uncomfort-
able and disruptive
to daily life. While it is often caused
by viruses, such as the common
cold or adenovirus, it can also result
from bacterial infections, allergens,
or irritants. Allergic conjunctivitis,
for example, can be triggered by
exposure to pollen, pet dander, or
mold spores. Chemicals in swim-
ming pools, smoke, and air pollu-
tion are also potential irritants that
can lead to conjunctivitis.
The symptoms of eye flu can
vary from person to person, but
common signs include redness in
the eye, excessive tearing, a burning
sensation, blurred vision, sensitiv-
ity to light, agglutination of lids in
the morning (sticking together), dif-
ficulty keeping the eyes open, pain,
and itching.
To prevent eye flu, maintaining
good hygiene is essential. This in-
cludes washing hands frequently
and avoiding touching the eyes with
unwashed hands. Washing the eyes
with cold water can also help. It’s
important to stay away from close
contact with individuals who have
eye flu to reduce the risk of trans-
mission.
One of the challenges with con-
junctivitis is its highly contagious
nature, especially in viral or bacte-
rial cases. It can spread easily from
person to person through direct con-
tact with infected eye secretions, or
by touching surfaces that have been
contaminated by the virus or bacte-
ria. Therefore, it is crucial to take
preventive measures to limit its
transmission.
Proper hygiene practices are key
to preventing the spread of conjunc-
tivitis. Regularly washing hands
with soap and water can signifi-
cantly reduce the risk of infection.
Avoiding touching or rubbing the
eyes with unwashed hands is essen-
tial. Sharing personal items like
towels or eye makeup should be
avoided during an active infection.
For those who wear contact lens-
es, maintaining proper lens hygiene
is critical. This includes regularly
cleaning and disinfecting lenses,
following the recommended wear-
ing schedule, and replacing them as
prescribed by an eye care profes-
sional.
In addition to good hygiene prac-
tices, using cold compresses on the
affected eye can provide relief from
symptoms like redness, swelling,
and itching.
In severe or persistent cases of
conjunctivitis, or if vision is affect-
ed, it is crucial to consult a health-
care professional, preferably an eye
specialist, for a proper diagnosis
and appropriate treatment plan.
They can determine the underlying
cause of conjunctivitis and recom-
mend the most effective treatment,
which may include prescription eye
drops, ointments, or oral medica-
tions.

of their breakup yet again broke the hearts of their supporters
around the world. Here’s the truth about the rumours claiming
Cabello and Alejandro are seeing each other. After being spotted
at the Inter Miami soccer game, a report claimed the Senorita
hitmaker was seeing the Puerto Rican singer. But now, a source
told People that the rumours are “100 per cent not true” and here’s
the reason why. “They just happened to be at two of the same
events. They barely even spent time together at either
event,” the insider explained.

BUDDHA PERSPECT VE www.firstindia.co.in firstindia.co.in/epapers/jaipur thefirstindia thefirstindia thefirstindia 04 Jaipur, Sunday | July 30, 2023 IN-DEPTH NCP CHIEF PAWAR KEEPS OPPOSITION ON TENTERHOOKS embers of the Opposition grouping I.N.D.I.A must be apprehensively watching every move of Sharad Pawar who is expected to share the dais with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Pune on August 1, the 103rd death anniversary of Lokmanya Tilak. The award will be conferred on Modi for awakening the feeling of patriotism among Indians. If Pawar confers the honour, the setback to I.N.D.I.Awould be huge. The grouping is totally un- prepared for that. Nobody can read the wily Maratha leader’s mind. Pawar himself is quiet on whether he will attend the function as chief guest. Sharad Pawar also held his cards close to his chest after his nephew Ajit Pa- war and NCPMPPraful Patel met him and urged him to join the group to support the BJP. This is why the Opposition grouping fears a shock blow from the Maratha strongman. Even if Pawar does not agree to support the BJP, conferring the honour on Modi would be enough to demoralise the Opposition. M SAUDIS TO HELP SET UP GWADAR REFINERY audi Arabia will collaborate with five Paki- stani companies to set up the oil refinery project at Gwadar, a strategic deep sea port. Saudi oil giant Aramco will execute the Greenfield project in which the Saudis will invest $10 billion. The project is located in the troubled Balochistan province of Pakistan where security has been a major issue even for the Chinese workers.Aramco will pro- vide 30 percent of the equity with the Pakistani com- panies putting in the remaining 70 percent. The deal is being seen as a boost to economic and strategic relations between the two countries and a boon for Pakistan which has been going through an unprece- dented economic cri- sis. Pakistan’s credi- bility due to financial mismanagement had fallen so low that last year Saudis are learnt to have refused to give interest-free loan to Islamabad. Saudis were also re- portedly reluctant to enter into an agree- ment for Gwadar port with the Tehreek-e- Insaaf Party govern- ment of Imran Khan. What has weighed in favour of Pakistan is that both Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has allowed the army chief SyedAsim Munir the space which was not there during Imran Khan’s tenure. So far the Saudi-Pakistan ties have failed to harm the bilateral relations between India and SaudiArabia and India and the United Arab Emirates. This was evident from the silent support the two countries ex- tended after Article 370 was scrapped to alter the status of JK. So much so, Pakistan was forced to toe the Saudi line and withdraw from the parallel OIC which Malaysia and Turkey had considered forming. S Saudi Arabia will collaborate with five Pakistani companies to set up the oil refinery project at Gwadar, a strategic deep sea port. Saudi oil giant Aramco will execute the Greenfield project in which the Saudis will invest $10 billion ABOUT THE PLAYERS India’s spinning combina- tion also needs to be final- ized with Chahal, Kuldeep , Jadeja and Axar in the mix. A late addition to the World Cup squad could be Ravi Ashwin who provides an off-spinning option in the lineup. Axar and Jadeja have the same skillset and many feel Ashwin should get the nod to lend variety and experience to the spin attack. After the Windies trip, besides the Asia Cup, India has just 3 ODIs left to play and needs to find a settled unit. An important facet of the 2011 World Cup win was that India had a settled side and made only a few changes in the playing 11 all through the Cham- pionship. Ironically, this time with just 2 months left for the World Cup, only a handful of players have sure spots while most of the team is still rather unclear! IndiaThumpsWindiesasBuild UpforODIWorldCupBegins eam India comfortably beat theWin- dies in the first ODI of the 3-match series by 5 wickets.Though India stut- tered in reaching a paltry target of 115, it had more to do with their aggressive style of play which ended thematchinjust45.5overs! The magic weaved by In- dian spinners was way too much for Windies batsmen who were dismissed for their second lowest ODI score ever against India. Batting first, Windies began badly as seamers Hardik Pandya, Shardul Thakur and debutant Mukesh Kumar picked up a wicket each inside the first 10 overs. A partner- ship between captain Shai Hope and Shimron Het- myer took them to 88. But the spin combo of Ravin- dra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav triggered a dramatic collapse taking 7 wickets for 26 runs in just 44 balls! In reply, India lost Shub- man Gill early but Ishan Kishan hit his 4th ODI half century to guide India to an easy win. The scorecard may suggest that India found it hard to chase as they lost 5 wickets but it was more due to extreme help for spinners from the pitch. Also, India promoted its youngsters up the order to find their batting rhythm. Rohit Sharma came in at no.7 and Virat Kohli was not even needed to bat! This series, however, is not just about beating the Windies who have declined sharply in the last few years as a force in limited overs cricket. Just recently, Win- dies cricket hit a new low by failing to qualify for the upcoming ODIWorld Cup. As such, it’s a complete mismatch between these two sides – while Windies won’t figure in the World Cup, India is one of the fa- vourites! This series is far more about finetuning India’s preparations for the Asia Cup in August-September and the World Cup in Oc- tober-November. India will like to cement their best combination going ahead and the current se- ries provides an opportu- nity for many players. Ide- ally, India would like Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson to find their batting mojo while Yuzvendra Chahal, KuldeepYadav and Umran Malik could get their bowl- ing rhythm back as they haven’t played any inter- national cricket of late. India’s batting revolves mainly around Rohit Shar- ma and Virat Kohli but there are a few spots up for grabs to solidify the mid- dle order. With Rishabh Pant injured and almost certain to miss the World Cup, Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan are in line to stake a claim for that role. Samson has a terrific bat- ting average of 66 from 11 One Dayers while Kishan is among the very few who have hit a double century in the 50 over format. If K.L Rahul, the original re- placement for Pant, doesn’t recover in time for theAsia Cup, it’s a direct Samson- Kishan contest for the wicketkeeper spot. Also, T20 specialist SuryakumarYadav is vying for the No 4 spot in the bat- ting order earlier held by Shreyas Iyer who is cur- rentlybattlingabackinjury. Surya got a good start in the first ODI against the Wind- ies but failed to capitalise. With little time left for the World Cup, Surya needs to iron out his chinks quickly if he’s to be a strong con- tender to bat at number 4. The biggest concern for India is their growing in- jury list. The latest addition is Mohammed Siraj who left for India after the Win- dies Test series complain- ing of ankle pain. Current- ly, the three first-choice pacers - Bumrah, Shami, Siraj - are going through injury concerns. Luckily, there’s good news on the Bumrah front as BCCI claims he may play in the Ireland T20 series after a better than expected rehab at the National Cricket Academy. Shami is being rested after the extra work- load he has shouldered in Bumrah’s absence. India’s spinning combi- nation also needs to be fi- nalized with Chahal, Kul- deep , Jadeja and Axar in the mix. A late addition to the World Cup squad could be Ravi Ashwin who pro- vides an off-spinning op- tion in the lineup.Axar and Jadeja have the same skill- set and many feel Ashwin should get the nod to lend variety and experience to the spin attack. THE VIEWS EXPRESSED BY THE AUTHOR ARE PERSONAL This series is far more about finetuning India’s preparations for the Asia Cup in August- September and the World Cup in October- November. India will like to cement their best combination going ahead and the current series provides an opportunity for many players. Ideally, India would like Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson to find their batting mojo while Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav and Umran Malik could get their bowling rhythm back as they haven’t played any international cricket of late. Agencies New Delhi In the second major rejig in less than a month, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) National President JP Nadda on Saturday released a list of the par- ty’s new central office- bearers, including fresh faces as vice presidents and general secretaries. The organisational re- shuffles and new ap- pointments ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls are part of the saffron party’s new social repre- sentation strategy and is being seen by political analysts as an attempt by the party to project itself as more inclusive. The new office bear- ers include former Ali- garh Muslim University (AMU) vice-chancellor Tariq Mansoor as one of its vice presidents. The appointment of Man- soor, now a BJP MLC in Uttar Pradesh, is being seen as part of the par- ty’s overtures to Pas- manda (backward) Muslims. Kerala leader Abdulla Kutty is another member from the minority com- munity on the list. Saroj Pandey, a Rajya Sabha MP from Chhat- tisgarh; and Lata Usen- di, a tribal leader from Chhattisgarh, have been made vice presidents — underscoring the party’s focus on the poll-bound state where the Con- gress is in power. Former UP BJP presi- dent and Rajya Sabha MP Laxmikant Bajpai is one of the two new vice presidents. Radha Mohan Agraw- al, a Rajya Sabha MP from Uttar Pradesh, is one of the two new faces on the list, which has nine general secretaries, seven of whom retain their position. Nagar is an influential Gurjar leader from western UP while Tasa has long been the face of tea tribes in the northeastern state. The appointment of Bandi Sanjay Kumar as general secretary, weeks after his removal as the Telangana BJP presi- dent, is a possible signal to the party cadres that he remains valuable to the national leadership, and that his ouster was a tactical call taken in the context of political re- alities in the southern state, a PTI report said citing sources. Former Chief Minis- ters Raman Singh, Vasundhara Raje, and Raghubar Das are among the seasoned leaders re- tained as vice presidents in the new list. The remaining grudge has left Nitish Kumar restless too. Last days when he had a meeting with his own party’s MP and Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha, Harivansh, reliable sources claim that Harivansh facilitated Nitish’s talks with the BJP top leadership. It is said that the BJP top ledershop told Nitish that ‘you are a politician of clean image, where are you getting stuck with the corrupt. Sooner or later he (Tejashwi Yadav) will have to go to jail and at that time there may be a split in your party as well.’ It is said that Nitish has put a condition of re-alliance with the BJP that ‘if Nitish joins an alliance with the BJP, then along with the Lok Sabha polls in Bihar, the assembly elections should also be held ahead of time.’ But it is said that the top leadership did not agree. Nitish wants a guarantee of his CM’s chair in 2024 itself. But BJP has not given up yet. It is said that the saffron party has proposed to Nitish that ‘if BJP and JDU form an al- liance again in the state, then the saffron party will leave 23 Lok Sabha and 150 assembly seats for Nitish.’ This proposal is obviously Nitish’s favorite because if he goes with ‘India’, a coalition of opposition parties, then it is difficult for JDU to get so many seats to contest elections. The 2019 Lok Sabha elections were fought jointly by BJP JDU in Bihar and this alliance won 39 out of total 40 seats in the state. S T I NITISH’S ATTACK ON CONGRESS? ecently, the CM of Bihar reconstituted 4 commis- sions and 2 boards of the state. In this reorganization, the former MPs and MLAs of JDU and RJD have been adjusted in it. But it seems that Nitish has ignored Congress in this whole exercise. Con- gress MLC Premchand Mishra has been made a member of the San- skrit Board. While the Congress had hoped that there would be talk of the post of chairman in any board or com- mission for him. When the Congress leaders lodged their protest in front of Nitish regard- ing this, Nitish clarified ‘our fight against BJP is a major challenge, we should not wander on small issues.’ On last Friday evening, Gurdeep Sappal came forward on behalf of Kharge and explained to his leaders that ‘right now two new ministers are to be appointed in Bihar from the Congress quota, and you are do- ing such small things. EYE FLU ALERT HowtoSpot Prevent Conjunctivitis onjunctivitis, com- monly known as pink eye or eye flu, is a condition that can be uncomfort- able and disruptive to daily life. While it is often caused by viruses, such as the common cold or adenovirus, it can also result from bacterial infections, allergens, or irritants. Allergic conjunctivitis, for example, can be triggered by exposure to pollen, pet dander, or mold spores. Chemicals in swim- ming pools, smoke, and air pollu- tion are also potential irritants that can lead to conjunctivitis. The symptoms of eye flu can vary from person to person, but common signs include redness in the eye, excessive tearing, a burning sensation, blurred vision, sensitiv- ity to light, agglutination of lids in the morning (sticking together), dif- ficulty keeping the eyes open, pain, and itching. To prevent eye flu, maintaining good hygiene is essential. This in- cludes washing hands frequently and avoiding touching the eyes with unwashed hands. Washing the eyes with cold water can also help. It’s important to stay away from close contact with individuals who have eye flu to reduce the risk of trans- mission. One of the challenges with con- junctivitis is its highly contagious nature, especially in viral or bacte- rial cases. It can spread easily from person to person through direct con- tact with infected eye secretions, or by touching surfaces that have been contaminated by the virus or bacte- ria. Therefore, it is crucial to take preventive measures to limit its transmission. Proper hygiene practices are key to preventing the spread of conjunc- tivitis. Regularly washing hands with soap and water can signifi- cantly reduce the risk of infection. Avoiding touching or rubbing the eyes with unwashed hands is essen- tial. Sharing personal items like towels or eye makeup should be avoided during an active infection. For those who wear contact lens- es, maintaining proper lens hygiene is critical. This includes regularly cleaning and disinfecting lenses, following the recommended wear- ing schedule, and replacing them as prescribed by an eye care profes- sional. In addition to good hygiene prac- tices, using cold compresses on the affected eye can provide relief from symptoms like redness, swelling, and itching. In severe or persistent cases of conjunctivitis, or if vision is affect- ed, it is crucial to consult a health- care professional, preferably an eye specialist, for a proper diagnosis and appropriate treatment plan. They can determine the underlying cause of conjunctivitis and recom- mend the most effective treatment, which may include prescription eye drops, ointments, or oral medica- tions.
