‘MODI HAI TO MUMKIN HAI…’ UNTOLD STORIES OF PM MODI — PART 61
NaMo ‘Powering' Bharat!
The narrators share their experiences over giving credit to PM Narendra Modi for novel safety
programme, role of PM Modi in making Somnath-Ayodhya Ram Rath Yatra a pan-India
success, sickle cell anemia issue, Modi’s love for digital revolution and lots more...
MODI’SSEMINAL
ROLEINSUCCESSOF
RAMRATHYATRA
he Somnath-Ayodhya Ram
Rath Yatra proved a milestone
in the centuries old struggle
for Ram Janmabhoomi movement.The
Yatra started on September 25, 1990
from Gujarat’s Somnath under the
leadership of BJP stalwart Lal Krishna
Advani.
But not many people know about the
role of Narendra Modi at that time in
making the programme such a pan-
India success. Modi was the party’s
state organisational general secretary
in Gujarat those days. He inspired and
united the party workers in large num-
bers by linking their struggle to the
country’s cultural awareness and com-
mitment.
The responsibility of initiating the
Yatra successfully from Gujarat was
under him. He did all the groundwork
of organising the event from scratch.
The Yatra travelled through 600 vil-
lages of Gujarat and Ram Shila Puja
was organised in every village so that
people from the entire state could emo-
tionally connect with the concept and
the purpose of the whole programme.
Narendra bhai had planned all the
routes and itinerary meticulously. He
also looked after every need of all
those who were a part of the procession
and kept record of every news that was
published in the papers to analyse the
response the rally was getting.
The organisation of the whole Yatra
was so efficient and disciplined that it
garnered rave reviews in all parts of the
country.The procession passed through
Gujarat in nine days coinciding with
the nine days of Navratri and Modi
lived only on water all through the
journey of nine days.
The important thing is, he connected
all sections of society with the move-
ment,beitsaints,orbusinessmen,wom-
en or service class and created an envi-
ronmentthatunitedpeopleforthecause.
The Yatra gave a new direction to the
Ram Janmabhoomi movement. Moreo-
ver, it catapulted the party into a nation-
al party with much broader acceptance.
Modi had a big hand in its rise.

CRUSADE
AGAINST SICKLE
CELL ANEMIA
arendra Modi and his government in
Gujarat was responsible for address-
ing the issue of sickle cell anemia
widely prevalent in the tribal population of the
state. This eventually led to the launch of the
‘National Sickle Cell Anaemia Elimination
Mission’ in 2023.
The issue was on Modi’s mind from very
early. After becoming the PM, he visited the
Centre for IPS Cell Research and Application
in Kyoto (Japan) in 2014 and interacted with
Shinya Yamanaka, a leading stem cell pioneer
and winner of the 2012 Nobel Prize on ways to
tackle the problem back home in Gujarat and
rest of the Indian population wherever it was
affecting people.
In those days we
were not very clear
about how and
what of sickle cell
anemia. We talked
to then CM Modi ji
and he gave us a
free hand, asking
us to do whatever
we thought best for
the welfare of the
people.
We first started
an awareness pro-
gramme through posters, jingles and health
camps to inform people what sickle cell was
all about and then, since it had a genetic line-
age, we also had to take up a mass screening
and genetic testing programme to stem its
proliferation in future generations. People
were given red, yellow and green cards as per
their health situation in order of prevalence of
the disease and those cards were matched
while marriages were planned so that the dis-
ease could not be passed on to the progeny.
Modi tied up with a US company way back in
2005-2006 which helped the state health depart-
ment take suitable initiatives for early screening
and stemming of sickle cell anemia. At least 90
lakh tribals were tested and over 31,000 of them
were found to have the disease. Modi ji ensured
that every hospital in the state, right from the
PHCstocivilhospitals,hadproperarrangements
in place to deal with sickle cell cases.

Modi introduced the
groundbreaking School
Safety Programme
s Gujarat CM, Narendra Modi
introduced a groundbreaking
School Safety Programme,
prompted by the tragic loss of stu-
dents’ lives during a Republic Day
parade in Anjar, during the Kutch
earthquake in 2001.
Gujarat’s school safety initiative re-
ceived international acclaim and was
adopted by numerous countries and the
United Nations. This programme’s pri-
mary aim was to bolster schools’read-
iness for natural disasters, involving
activities such as assessing schools’
vulnerability, integrating disaster pre-
paredness into the curriculum, con-
ducting mock drills and others.
We must give credit to Narendra
Modi for this novel safety programme.
He himself declared at an event that he
would make the School Safety Pro-
gramme the golden goal of Gujarat and
honoured his commitment.
The programme focussed on the vul-
nerability of individual schools and if
any school was found to be on the fault-
line or in a high seismic zone that en-
dangered it, measures were taken that
included training the teachers and stu-
dents in disaster management protocols
so that maximum lives could be saved.
Additionally, mock drills were con-
ducted to ensure no one was stuck at the
time of an emergency. Later the same
programme was turned into a national
programme for the safety of children
across the country. A charter was also
prepared as Ahmedabad School Safety
Agenda which is now considered glob-
ally as a good practice manual which
the UN replicated in several countries.

Jaipur: The agencies have made 858% more seizures
than the 65 days of 2018 since the beginning of the
Model code of conduct in the State.
Seizure figure has crossed Rs. 600
crores. Crossed the figure of Rs. 20
crores in 10 districts. Jaipur is on the
top with seizures worth Rs. 99.25
crore. Alwar has recorded seizures
worth Rs 33.97 crore, Jodhpur Rs 28.56 crore, Bundi Rs
23.75 crore, Ajmer Rs 23.19 crore, Udaipur Rs 22.82 crore,
Bhilwara Rs 22.72 crore, Chittorgarh Rs 22.42 crore,
Nagaur Rs 22.21 crore and Bikaner Rs 20.84 crore.
It remains to be seen whether the Congress party is
able to get the votes of Muslims in Nagaur and
Didwana or the AIMIM and other regional parties will cut
votes. It is believed that prominent Ulemas of the Muslim
community have become active in the election time and
their appeal can influence the society. Muslim religious
leaders are, however, expressing their views very
thoughtfully keeping in mind that a message should not be
sent out that elections are Hindu versus Muslim. BJP gave
the election a Hindutva direction by fielding some
prominent saints and Mahatmas and it did not field even a
single Muslim candidate. Its reaction is also visible among
the Muslim community. Prominent Muslim faces of BJP
are also disappointed with this. Yogesh Sharma
Baran: There are talks about future politics in the
BJP meetings in Hadoti. MP Dushyant Singh
speaking in BJP meeting in Chhipabarod said, “Press

meeting was held in support of BJP candidate from
Chhabra. Former CM Vasundhara Raje was also present

Israeli forces raid Gaza’s largest hospital

sraeli troops en-
tered Gaza’s

on Wednesday and were
searching its rooms and
basement, witnesses said,
culminating a days-long
siege that caused global
alarm over the fate of
thousands of civilians
trapped inside.
Al Shifa hospital in
Gaza City has become
the main target of the
ground operation by Is-
raeli forces, who say Ha-
mas fighters located the
“beating heart” of their
operations in a headquar-
ters in tunnels beneath it,
which Hamas denies.
Israel said its troops
uncovered unspecified
weapons and “terror in-
frastructure” inside the
hospital compound after
killing fighters in a clash
outside. Once inside,
they said there had been
no fighting and no fric-
tion with civilians, pa-
tients or staff.
Witnesses who spoke
to Reuters from inside
the compound on
Wednesday described a
situation that appeared
calm, if tense, as the Is-
raeli troops moved be-
tween buildings carrying
out searches. Sporadic
shooting was heard but
there were no immediate
reports of anyone hurt
inside the grounds.

“In the rallies, I saw
how upset the people of

vision for the develop-
ment of MP and no road-

“The campaign for the
Madhya Pradesh Legis-

special, more of a cam-
paign to seek blessings
from the people. I went to
every corner of the state,
met many people, and
had conversations. The
affection for BJP among
the people, the faith in
BJP, is our biggest asset,”

The Congress is set for a rout in the elections. People are believing the good
governance of the BJP and not the hollow promises of the Congress. People have
this unbreakable faith that only the BJP can make a developed state belonging
to the 21st century. The way OBC, SC and ST youths are joining the BJP’s
development model is very encouraging. This strength of youth will write a new
chapter of change. The women power of MP is stepping forward in this election to
raise the flag of BJP. Just as women empowerment is a priority for BJP, women
have made the return of the BJP government their priority. Today’s new
generation is looking at the next 25 years of India and their own 25 years
together. And that’s why our youth are also coming forward shoulder to shoulder
to fulfil the responsibility of taking the resolve of a developed India to fruition.

THOUGHT OF THE DAY

Jaipur, Thursday | November 16, 2023 www.firstindia.co.in firstindia.co.in/epapers/jaipur thefirstindia thefirstindia thefirstindia
zChief Minister Ashok
Gehlot is called a ‘game
changer.’ But will his
statement regarding
MSP turn out to be
game changer for Con-
gress this time?
Dr Jagdeesh Chandra:
The politics of freebies
will have to be accepted
by BJP since they too
have understood its
mechanism. In that,
Ashok Gehlot is a mas-
termind. It was him, who
brought forward the Old
Pension Scheme and
stuck to it as a result of
this, this model was fol-
lowed by Congress in
Karnataka and Himachal
Pradesh and there the
Congress formed its gov-
ernment, resulting in
Ashok Gehlot becoming
a ‘Hero’ for Congress.
Thereafter, he brought
the Chiranjeevi insur-
ance of Rs 25 lakh.
Someone in Jaipur told
me that his son went out
for four days and when
he returned he informed
the family that he under-
went knee replacement
surgery without spending
one rupee of his own, all
thanks to the Chiranjeevi
Scheme. This is miracu-
lous. I also heard that of-
ficials associated with
PM’s office got together
to find a solution for this
scheme. About half a
dozen meetings were
held and then it was de-
cided to increase its am-
bit to Rs 50 lakh. In addi-
tion, Gehlot has given
mobiles to women after
which he brought ‘An-
napurna Yojana.’ Now
the manifesto is going to
be announced. Gehlot be-
lieves that at present, he
is on 82 seats and is look-
ing for some miraculous
development from his
side to up his seats to
100. Meanwhile, BJP
says that it is firmly
perched on 140 seats. In
fact, one senior leader
told me that there will be
tsunami of seats and the
party will get 150 seats.
Even if they don’t get
150, the betting market is
claiming BJP will get
130 odd seats and sur-
veys are pitching BJP
around 118-120 mark.
Meanwhile, Ashok Ge-
hlot is not giving up and
someone told me today
that Gehlot’s own assess-
ment is of 106 seats. So
just before election, Ge-
hlot wants to play a hand
and thus, has picked up
the MSPissue, which has
always been a topic of
concern for farmers. Ge-
hlot wants to give legal
guarantee to farmers that
his government will pur-
chase everything they
produce. Then he is
promising ERCP as well,
but how much will the
Central government let
him work on it is ques-
tionable since it requires
a huge amount of money
and it is known that it is
being done for political
gain. Then there is caste
census which Rahul Gan-
dhi has said that it will be
implemented across the
nation. So, Ashok Gehlot
is trying his level best to
garner each and every
single vote into his kitty
that perhaps he reaches
100 seats. If Congress-
bags 98 seats then it will
be difficult for him to
form government since
there is another party’s
government in Delhi.
zThere are some quar-
ters who claim that
there is doubt about
Gurjar community sup-
porting Congress this
time around over Sachin
Pilot. What is your take
on this?
See, that was the general
perception since the
community believes that
since Pilot was not made
the CM, he wasn’t treat-
ed well. Today the big-
gest question in Ra-
jasthan’s politics is who
will the Gurjars vote for?
The answer to this ques-
tion is not only being
sought by Ashok Gehlot,
butAmit Shah too. There
are few Gurjar dominat-
ed districts like Jaipur
rural, Bharatpur, Sawai
Madhopur, Alwar, Dhol-
pur and a few others
which are Gurjar domi-
nated. But one change
that can happen is that
Pilot is assured that if
Congress government is
formed this time around,
then Sonia Gandhi will
get him to take oath as
CM. My view is differ-
ent in this regard because
what happened on Sep-
tember 25 shows that
Gehlot will never let go
of power. But the world
revolves on hope and Pi-
lot has every right to be
hopeful. Even if he was
not promised in the past
about CM’s chair, he has
definitely been told this
time around, specially by
Priyanka Gandhi. From
what I have heard, it is
being said that first Pilot
should get Gurjar votes
in Congress’ kitty and
then when the govern-
ment is formed, will the
question of leadership
arise. If government is
not formed then Pilot’s
dream would die. Ashok
Gehlot has been CM for
15 years, Pilot hasn’t
been the CM ever and
thus, it could be that
through Priyanka’s sup-
port, Pilot may be sup-
ported. Then there is an-
other angle to this issue.
Ashok Gehlot’s strategy
says that he has already
made plans which ex-
clude Gurjar votes, but
would still get Congress
back in the driver’s seat,
since wherever there has
been Gurjar influence,
he has fielded Gurjar
candidates and has also
given tickets to Pilot
supporters and thus, Pi-
lot will have to ensure
victory of his supporters
in order for his dream to
stay alive. So, I think
Gurjar vote will not play
a major role. So I do not
buy this theory that Gur-
jar votes will hamper
Congress’ performance
on 40 seats.
zWe have seen im-
mense crowd in Ge-
hlot’s rallies and
on the other
hand, the bet-
ting market
in Ra-
jasthan
claims
that BJP
will form
govern-
ment. How do
you evaluate this
contradiction?
It is a fact that in Ge-
hlot’s 3-4 meetings, a
crowd ranging from
4,000 to 10,000 has been
witnessed. This has hap-
pened for the first time
in Gehlot’s life, since
earlier there used to be
anti-incumbency, and
the manner in which
people are coming to
these meetings on their
own, was not seen in the
past. If 7 or 8,000 people
are turning up on their
own in CM’s rallies,
then it simply means
that there is no anti-in-
cumbency. And the sec-
ond surprising aspect is
that these meetings are
being held in local can-
didate’s area but there is
no opposition in here.
Where have those peo-
ple vanished who
claimed they would
show black flags to CM?
The candidate is cam-
paigning for his victory
in the area and the ob-
servers are perplexed as
to what has suddenly
happened? The observ-
ers had said that if votes
are sought on current
legislators then
C o n g r e s s
would get
only 40
seats,
but
the candidates are not
being opposed to. So
does that mean that peo-
ple have accepted these
candidates or has the
voter chosen to remain
silent and show might
only on the polling day?
But it is definitely mi-
raculous that people are
gathering in thousands
in Gehlot’s meetings and
it should concern BJP as
it only has PM Modi and
Amit Shah as its main
face. Raje is moving
about in limited area and
there are no crowd pull-
ers at local level that can
stand at par with Gehlot,
before the people.
zDo you think PM
Modi’s public rallies
will become a ‘game
changer’ for BJP?
PM Modi and Amit
Shah are BJP’s only
hope. As of right now,
only these two are there.
Yes, at regional level,
there is Gajendra Singh
Shekhawat, Vasundhara
Raje, Rajendra Rathore,
CP Joshi and others and
as such, they are doing
it for BJP only, if they
campaign for anyone.
What I mean to say that
PM and Amit shah are
the only hope and I be-
lieve he is coming to
Jaipur soon and will
move through the
walled city where lakhs
of people will see him
which will create a
wave. However, in Ra-
jasthan politics, unfor-
tuntely for BJP, the
party hasn’t been able to
pick up or create issues
over which it can coun-
ter the government and
lobby before people to
want them to remove
the government. This is
a bizarre thing. PM has
done a dozen meetings
and recently in Udaipur
he held a rally of 50,000
people. It is due to this
crowd that he has this
confidence in saying
that he doesn’t
need anyone
and that he
will bring the
government
on his own.
This is peo-
ple’s confi-
dence in him
that gives
Modi the con-
fidence to take
challenges. I
believe that
PM’s public
meetings in
coming days in
Rajasthan will re-
sult in increasing
seats in BJP’s fa-
vour and will defi-
nitely be a ‘game
changer.’
zWhat is your take on
Madhya Pradesh? Will
Kamal Nath be able to
form government this
time?
May be or may not be.
The difference has less-
ened. About three
months back, the BJP
was nowhere to be seen
and Kamal Nath had
clear lead, but today,
that lead is no where to
be seen. According to an
optimistic calculation
that Congress has got
done for Madhya
Pradesh, Kamal nath is
getting only 95 seats and
BJP is getting 80 seats.
However, in the analysis
of channels and agen-
cies, the tally stands at
par for both the BJP and
the Congress. Overall,
there is a difference of
10 to 12 seats and the
manner in which PM
Narendra Modi and
Shah have camped in
MP, it would not be right
to rule out that their be-
ing in MP may tilt the
difference in BJP’s fa-
vour. So, we can say that
Kamal nath and Con-
gress’ coming to power
is a possibility and not a
certainty.
zSo if BJP is repeated
in Madhya Pradesh,
who will be its CM? Will
Shivraj be repeated?
There are several candi-
dates for the position of
CM. There is only one
negative aspect regard-
ing Shivraj Singh Chou-
han that people have
started getting bored of
his face. Other than that
he is a good CM and has
been there for 16 years.
He is an example of old
school BJP and RSS eth-
ics as he is low profile,
simple and of humble
demeanour. For once,
party did sideline him
when Tomar, Pralhad
and others were brought
in and it sent a message
that Shivraj is not indis-
pensable, which must
have demoralised him a
bit. But later, it was real-
ised that he is the ‘face’
of government since he
is standing before the
public and if he gets de-
moralised then how
would the party work?
This was perhaps com-
municated or understood
by RSS and Amit Shah,
thus, he was brought
back into the main
stream and PM gave
statements praising him.
Of late, Shivraj has be-
come emotional too and
has been saying that if he
loses then the women of
MP, which he addresses
as his sisters, will re-
member him. Perhaps he
too has this idea that he
may lose. But according
to me, all said and done,
he is the leading candi-
date for the post of CM
and the face of party in
MP as CM. The next
candidate for CM’s
chair is Narendra Singh
Tomar. Then among oth-
er candidates, there
could be Scindia or Pa-
tel as well and if ‘in
principle’ decision is
taken that they have
bring a new face, then I
think Tomar could be
the front runner and as
such, it is difficult to
read what goes on in
Narendra Modi Amit
Shah’s minds. But then
2024 election would be
right around the corner
after the results come in
and that aspect will also
have to be factored in,
so let’s see.

EXPLORE ALTERNATIVE
MODALITIES
No one size fits all. For mental health
too, there is no one solution alone. One
man’s poison could be another’s elixir.
I may not personally and individually
be a Reiki believer. That’s not to say it
will not work for another individual.
Therefore, be open to, and explore the
plethora of alternative healing modal-
ities. In any case, we in India are bless-
ed with a barrage of options – yoga,
Pilates, Ayurveda, reiki, access bars,
tarot, astrology – the list is endless.
In fact, a growing number of Life
Coaches and Healers are now combin-
ing traditional best practices and spe-
cific facets of multiple modalities and
formulating their unique ethos and
programs stemming from it.
BE PRESENT, IN THE PRESENT
I do not usually watch TV commer-
cials. Ironically, having worked in ad-
vertising is what brought be brutally
close to the banal realities of the busi-
ness. But I digress. Not in the least be-
cause of on-demand TV, ads are a thing
of the past – at least having to consume
them. However, one particular TVC
encapsulates this point of mine rather
poignantly. At a junior school in the
auditorium, a play is being staged.
Children are performing as proud par-
ents look on in nervous anticipation.
And while every parent in the audience
is recording the show on their respec-
tive phones, the play ends. The parents
continued recording, and one solitary
yet palpable clap from the back of the
seats was heard. Then, the gentleman
clapping rises and is seen. A father, the
only individual amongst the spectators
did not take out his phone but had been
carefully watching the show. No sur-
prise that he was the only one who no-
ticed the play had ended!
The point is simple. We are all guilty
of having lost ourselves to something
– either to our devices, to past times,
or to future planning and/or worry. In
the process, we are forsaking the most
critical facet of life – our ongoing pre-
sent moment. A moment to live, expe-
rience, relish and soak in fully. Many
spiritual streams, leaders, gurus and
philosophies have expounded upon the
virtue of the ‘present moment’. My
final piece of advice for sound mental
health is to seriously and consciously
try to be present, in the present.
Back when I was a young child, one
had the pleasure and privilege of con-
structing one’s own systems. If one
were an audiophile, one researched,
tested, and put together one’s own,
ideal, unique music set-up with an
amalgam of various components from
different makers.
Healing then, could be approached
similarly. A fusion of a few different
elements that come together to work
for each wonderfully peculiar indi-
vidual. Because no two of us are the
same. Then why should our healing
circle be?
he slightest
hint of a com-
mon cold pro-
pels us to the
doctor. Tragi-
cally, the
same cannot
be said of psychological dis-
tress and ailments; most of
which fall undiagnosed, by the
wayside, silently perpetuating
an imminent and cataclysmic
event that is often, a debilitat-
ing, even fatal, physical condi-
tion!
While one recognizes the
multiple barriers to acknowl-
edging and accessing mental-
health-help in India, especially
the traditional psychotherapy
kind; given the stigma taboo
subject mental health is, the
paucity of fundamental psycho-
education, and a marketplace
unfortunately infested with,
amongst the many ethical
qualified mental-health profes-
sionals, questionable practi-
tioners – there is a way out.
T
There is nothing quite like preventive and
preemptive care. For mental health too, long
before one reaches a juncture that warrants psy-
chotherapeutic intervention, certain simple yet
key steps can be adopted by each of us, to give
ourselves the best shot at avoiding distress
unrest in the first place. In a world where many
psychological afflictions are related to, or
caused by aggravated and sustained stress
anxiety, a number of tools can alleviate the
situation.
PHYSICAL ACTIVITY
Few pursuits relieve and vent stress quite like
physical activity. A well-chronicled scientific
fact, physical activity releases hormones that
dispel worry, tension and anxiety, leaving the
mind and body rejuvenated. A short little exer-
cise regimen, be it a walk, hike, or yoga, will
go a long way
ALONE TIME
One could argue that we are leading increas-
ingly isolated lives in any case. So why the need
for alone time? Let us define it more specifi-
cally. Ten to fifteen minutes in an otherwise
hectic and stressful 24-hour cycle to oneself,
with oneself, sacrosanct, specifically engaged
in an activity that makes us ‘happy’. Sketching,
writing, painting, photography; most any crea-
tive expression positively preoccupies and pre-
disposes the mind.
NATURAL-NATURE
Irrespective of religious spiritual persuasion,
most of us can agree that the innate connection
between man and nature is undeniable. To in-
clude, if not regularly, sporadic bursts of time
spent in and amongst nature can have a cathar-
tic and healing effect. Pack that dusty rucksack
and go camping!
QUALITY SOCIAL TIME
In the blind rat race that life tends to become; a
concerted effort to spend quality, not quantity
time, with close family and close friends, huge-
ly and positively impacts and informs the mind.
Don’t procrastinate anymore. Pick up the phone
and make that long-pending call to your best
friend from school!

16, Rajasthan
joins the na-
tion in cele-
brating National Press
Day, an occasion that
symbolizes the essence
of a free and responsible
press in our democratic
landscape. This day
holds particular signifi-
cance in Rajasthan,
where a dynamic and di-
verse media landscape
plays a crucial role in re-
flecting the state’s cul-
tural richness and socio-
political dynamism.
AscitizensofRajasthan,
we can actively contribute
to making National Press
Day meaningful by recog-
nizing the importance of a
free press. Supporting lo-
cal journalism,subscribing
to credible news sources,
and engaging in informed
discussions can enhance
the quality of journalism in
the state. Acknowledging
the challenges faced by
journalistsandappreciating
their dedication to truth-
telling fosters a culture of
media responsibility.
Additionally, promot-
ing media literacy, espe-
cially among the youth,
is essential. Schools and
community organisations
can organize workshops
to educate individuals on
discerning reliable infor-
mation sources, under-
standing media biases,
and navigating the digital
landscape responsibly.
National Press Day is
a call for each citizen to
champion the principles
of a free press. By re-
specting journalistic in-
tegrity, advocating for
press freedom, and stay-
ing informed through di-
verse sources, we con-
tribute to nurturing a vi-
brant and responsible
media environment in
Rajasthan.

  • 2. ‘MODI HAI TO MUMKIN HAI…’ UNTOLD STORIES OF PM MODI — PART 61 NaMo ‘Powering' Bharat! The narrators share their experiences over giving credit to PM Narendra Modi for novel safety programme, role of PM Modi in making Somnath-Ayodhya Ram Rath Yatra a pan-India success, sickle cell anemia issue, Modi’s love for digital revolution and lots more... MODI’SSEMINAL ROLEINSUCCESSOF RAMRATHYATRA he Somnath-Ayodhya Ram Rath Yatra proved a milestone in the centuries old struggle for Ram Janmabhoomi movement. The Yatra started on September 25, 1990 from Gujarat’s Somnath under the leadership of BJP stalwart Lal Krishna Advani. But not many people know about the role of Narendra Modi at that time in making the programme such a pan- India success. Modi was the party’s state organisational general secretary in Gujarat those days. He inspired and united the party workers in large num- bers by linking their struggle to the country’s cultural awareness and com- mitment. The responsibility of initiating the Yatra successfully from Gujarat was under him. He did all the groundwork of organising the event from scratch. The Yatra travelled through 600 vil- lages of Gujarat and Ram Shila Puja was organised in every village so that people from the entire state could emo- tionally connect with the concept and the purpose of the whole programme. Narendra bhai had planned all the routes and itinerary meticulously. He also looked after every need of all those who were a part of the procession and kept record of every news that was published in the papers to analyse the response the rally was getting. The organisation of the whole Yatra was so efficient and disciplined that it garnered rave reviews in all parts of the country. The procession passed through Gujarat in nine days coinciding with the nine days of Navratri and Modi lived only on water all through the journey of nine days. The important thing is, he connected all sections of society with the move- ment,beitsaints,orbusinessmen,wom- en or service class and created an envi- ronmentthatunitedpeopleforthecause. The Yatra gave a new direction to the Ram Janmabhoomi movement. Moreo- ver, it catapulted the party into a nation- al party with much broader acceptance. Modi had a big hand in its rise. T Anil Jodhani Gujarat Mansukh Patel Former Corporator, Rajkot Gordhan Zadafia Former Minister, Gujarat CRUSADE AGAINST SICKLE CELL ANEMIA arendra Modi and his government in Gujarat was responsible for address- ing the issue of sickle cell anemia widely prevalent in the tribal population of the state. This eventually led to the launch of the ‘National Sickle Cell Anaemia Elimination Mission’ in 2023. The issue was on Modi’s mind from very early. After becoming the PM, he visited the Centre for IPS Cell Research and Application in Kyoto (Japan) in 2014 and interacted with Shinya Yamanaka, a leading stem cell pioneer and winner of the 2012 Nobel Prize on ways to tackle the problem back home in Gujarat and rest of the Indian population wherever it was affecting people. In those days we were not very clear about how and what of sickle cell anemia. We talked to then CM Modi ji and he gave us a free hand, asking us to do whatever we thought best for the welfare of the people. We first started an awareness pro- gramme through posters, jingles and health camps to inform people what sickle cell was all about and then, since it had a genetic line- age, we also had to take up a mass screening and genetic testing programme to stem its proliferation in future generations. People were given red, yellow and green cards as per their health situation in order of prevalence of the disease and those cards were matched while marriages were planned so that the dis- ease could not be passed on to the progeny. Modi tied up with a US company way back in 2005-2006 which helped the state health depart- ment take suitable initiatives for early screening and stemming of sickle cell anemia. At least 90 lakh tribals were tested and over 31,000 of them were found to have the disease. Modi ji ensured that every hospital in the state, right from the PHCstocivilhospitals, hadproperarrangements in place to deal with sickle cell cases. N Dr Yazdi Italia Former Honorary Director, Sickle Cell Anemia Control Program, Gujarat Modi introduced the groundbreaking School Safety Programme s Gujarat CM, Narendra Modi introduced a groundbreaking School Safety Programme, prompted by the tragic loss of stu- dents’ lives during a Republic Day parade in Anjar, during the Kutch earthquake in 2001. Gujarat’s school safety initiative re- ceived international acclaim and was adopted by numerous countries and the United Nations. This programme’s pri- mary aim was to bolster schools’read- iness for natural disasters, involving activities such as assessing schools’ vulnerability, integrating disaster pre- paredness into the curriculum, con- ducting mock drills and others. We must give credit to Narendra Modi for this novel safety programme. He himself declared at an event that he would make the School Safety Pro- gramme the golden goal of Gujarat and honoured his commitment. The programme focussed on the vul- nerability of individual schools and if any school was found to be on the fault- line or in a high seismic zone that en- dangered it, measures were taken that included training the teachers and stu- dents in disaster management protocols so that maximum lives could be saved. Additionally, mock drills were con- ducted to ensure no one was stuck at the time of an emergency. Later the same programme was turned into a national programme for the safety of children across the country. A charter was also prepared as Ahmedabad School Safety Agenda which is now considered glob- ally as a good practice manual which the UN replicated in several countries. Cong is going to form Govt in Rajasthan again. KC Venugopal, Congress General Secretary In 2018, Cong promised to waive off farmers’ loan within 10 days. It remains to be seen whether the Congress party is able to get the votes of Muslims in Nagaur and Didwana or the AIMIM and other regional parties will cut votes. It is believed that prominent Ulemas of the Muslim community have become active in the election time and their appeal can influence the society. Muslim religious leaders are, however, expressing their views very thoughtfully keeping in mind that a message should not be sent out that elections are Hindu versus Muslim. BJP gave the election a Hindutva direction by fielding some prominent saints and Mahatmas and it did not field even a single Muslim candidate. Its reaction is also visible among the Muslim community. Prominent Muslim faces of BJP are also disappointed with this. Yogesh Sharma Baran: There are talks about future politics in the BJP meetings in Hadoti. Al Shifa hospital in Gaza City has become the main target of the ground operation by Is- raeli forces, who say Ha- mas fighters located the “beating heart” of their operations in a headquar- ters in tunnels beneath it, which Hamas denies. Israel said its troops uncovered unspecified weapons and “terror in- frastructure” inside the hospital compound after killing fighters in a clash outside. Once inside, they said there had been no fighting and no fric- tion with civilians, pa- tients or staff. Witnesses who spoke to Reuters from inside the compound on Wednesday described a situation that appeared calm, if tense, as the Is- raeli troops moved be- tween buildings carrying out searches. Sporadic shooting was heard but there were no immediate reports of anyone hurt inside the grounds. • 9. 08 We have to aspire for peace first and foremost, then only we can walk the path of understanding and tolerance. Dr Jagdeesh Chandra, CMD Editor-in-Chief THOUGHT OF THE DAY Postal Reg No. JPC/004/2022-24 Jaipur, Thursday | November 16, 2023 www.firstindia.co.in firstindia.co.in/epapers/jaipur thefirstindia thefirstindia thefirstindia zChief Minister Ashok Gehlot is called a ‘game changer.’ But will his statement regarding MSP turn out to be game changer for Con- gress this time? Dr Jagdeesh Chandra: The politics of freebies will have to be accepted by BJP since they too have understood its mechanism. In that, Ashok Gehlot is a mas- termind. It was him, who brought forward the Old Pension Scheme and stuck to it as a result of this, this model was fol- lowed by Congress in Karnataka and Himachal Pradesh and there the Congress formed its gov- ernment, resulting in Ashok Gehlot becoming a ‘Hero’ for Congress. Thereafter, he brought the Chiranjeevi insur- ance of Rs 25 lakh. Someone in Jaipur told me that his son went out for four days and when he returned he informed the family that he under- went knee replacement surgery without spending one rupee of his own, all thanks to the Chiranjeevi Scheme. This is miracu- lous. I also heard that of- ficials associated with PM’s office got together to find a solution for this scheme. About half a dozen meetings were held and then it was de- cided to increase its am- bit to Rs 50 lakh. In addi- tion, Gehlot has given mobiles to women after which he brought ‘An- napurna Yojana.’ Now the manifesto is going to be announced. Gehlot be- lieves that at present, he is on 82 seats and is look- ing for some miraculous development from his side to up his seats to 100. Meanwhile, BJP says that it is firmly perched on 140 seats. In fact, one senior leader told me that there will be tsunami of seats and the party will get 150 seats. Even if they don’t get 150, the betting market is claiming BJP will get 130 odd seats and sur- veys are pitching BJP around 118-120 mark. Meanwhile, Ashok Ge- hlot is not giving up and someone told me today that Gehlot’s own assess- ment is of 106 seats. So just before election, Ge- hlot wants to play a hand and thus, has picked up the MSPissue, which has always been a topic of concern for farmers. Ge- hlot wants to give legal guarantee to farmers that his government will pur- chase everything they produce. Then he is promising ERCP as well, but how much will the Central government let him work on it is ques- tionable since it requires a huge amount of money and it is known that it is being done for political gain. Then there is caste census which Rahul Gan- dhi has said that it will be implemented across the nation. So, Ashok Gehlot is trying his level best to garner each and every single vote into his kitty that perhaps he reaches 100 seats. If Congress- bags 98 seats then it will be difficult for him to form government since there is another party’s government in Delhi. zThere are some quar- ters who claim that there is doubt about Gurjar community sup- porting Congress this time around over Sachin Pilot. What is your take on this? See, that was the general perception since the community believes that since Pilot was not made the CM, he wasn’t treat- ed well. Today the big- gest question in Ra- jasthan’s politics is who will the Gurjars vote for? The answer to this ques- tion is not only being sought by Ashok Gehlot, butAmit Shah too. There are few Gurjar dominat- ed districts like Jaipur rural, Bharatpur, Sawai Madhopur, Alwar, Dhol- pur and a few others which are Gurjar domi- nated. But one change that can happen is that Pilot is assured that if Congress government is formed this time around, then Sonia Gandhi will get him to take oath as CM. My view is differ- ent in this regard because what happened on Sep- tember 25 shows that Gehlot will never let go of power. But the world revolves on hope and Pi- lot has every right to be hopeful. Even if he was not promised in the past about CM’s chair, he has definitely been told this time around, specially by Priyanka Gandhi. From what I have heard, it is being said that first Pilot should get Gurjar votes in Congress’ kitty and then when the govern- ment is formed, will the question of leadership arise. If government is not formed then Pilot’s dream would die. Ashok Gehlot has been CM for 15 years, Pilot hasn’t been the CM ever and thus, it could be that through Priyanka’s sup- port, Pilot may be sup- ported. Then there is an- other angle to this issue. Ashok Gehlot’s strategy says that he has already made plans which ex- clude Gurjar votes, but would still get Congress back in the driver’s seat, since wherever there has been Gurjar influence, he has fielded Gurjar candidates and has also given tickets to Pilot supporters and thus, Pi- lot will have to ensure victory of his supporters in order for his dream to stay alive. So, I think Gurjar vote will not play a major role. So I do not buy this theory that Gur- jar votes will hamper Congress’ performance on 40 seats. zWe have seen im- mense crowd in Ge- hlot’s rallies and on the other hand, the bet- ting market in Ra- jasthan claims that BJP will form govern- ment. How do you evaluate this contradiction? It is a fact that in Ge- hlot’s 3-4 meetings, a crowd ranging from 4,000 to 10,000 has been witnessed. This has hap- pened for the first time in Gehlot’s life, since earlier there used to be anti-incumbency, and the manner in which people are coming to these meetings on their own, was not seen in the past. If 7 or 8,000 people are turning up on their own in CM’s rallies, then it simply means that there is no anti-in- cumbency. And the sec- ond surprising aspect is that these meetings are being held in local can- didate’s area but there is no opposition in here. Where have those peo- ple vanished who claimed they would show black flags to CM? The candidate is cam- paigning for his victory in the area and the ob- servers are perplexed as to what has suddenly happened? The observ- ers had said that if votes are sought on current legislators then C o n g r e s s would get only 40 seats, but the candidates are not being opposed to. So does that mean that peo- ple have accepted these candidates or has the voter chosen to remain silent and show might only on the polling day? But it is definitely mi- raculous that people are gathering in thousands in Gehlot’s meetings and it should concern BJP as it only has PM Modi and Amit Shah as its main face. Raje is moving about in limited area and there are no crowd pull- ers at local level that can stand at par with Gehlot, before the people. zDo you think PM Modi’s public rallies will become a ‘game changer’ for BJP? PM Modi and Amit Shah are BJP’s only hope. As of right now, only these two are there. Yes, at regional level, there is Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Vasundhara Raje, Rajendra Rathore, CP Joshi and others and as such, they are doing it for BJP only, if they campaign for anyone. What I mean to say that PM and Amit shah are the only hope and I be- lieve he is coming to Jaipur soon and will move through the walled city where lakhs of people will see him which will create a wave. However, in Ra- jasthan politics, unfor- tuntely for BJP, the party hasn’t been able to pick up or create issues over which it can coun- ter the government and lobby before people to want them to remove the government. This is a bizarre thing. PM has done a dozen meetings and recently in Udaipur he held a rally of 50,000 people. It is due to this crowd that he has this confidence in saying that he doesn’t need anyone and that he will bring the government on his own. This is peo- ple’s confi- dence in him that gives Modi the con- fidence to take challenges. I believe that PM’s public meetings in coming days in Rajasthan will re- sult in increasing seats in BJP’s fa- vour and will defi- nitely be a ‘game changer.’ zWhat is your take on Madhya Pradesh? Will Kamal Nath be able to form government this time? May be or may not be. The difference has less- ened. About three months back, the BJP was nowhere to be seen and Kamal Nath had clear lead, but today, that lead is no where to be seen. According to an optimistic calculation that Congress has got done for Madhya Pradesh, Kamal nath is getting only 95 seats and BJP is getting 80 seats. However, in the analysis of channels and agen- cies, the tally stands at par for both the BJP and the Congress. Overall, there is a difference of 10 to 12 seats and the manner in which PM Narendra Modi and Shah have camped in MP, it would not be right to rule out that their be- ing in MP may tilt the difference in BJP’s fa- vour. So, we can say that Kamal nath and Con- gress’ coming to power is a possibility and not a certainty. zSo if BJP is repeated in Madhya Pradesh, who will be its CM? Will Shivraj be repeated? There are several candi- dates for the position of CM. There is only one negative aspect regard- ing Shivraj Singh Chou- han that people have started getting bored of his face. Other than that he is a good CM and has been there for 16 years. He is an example of old school BJP and RSS eth- ics as he is low profile, simple and of humble demeanour. For once, party did sideline him when Tomar, Pralhad and others were brought in and it sent a message that Shivraj is not indis- pensable, which must have demoralised him a bit. But later, it was real- ised that he is the ‘face’ of government since he is standing before the public and if he gets de- moralised then how would the party work? This was perhaps com- municated or understood by RSS and Amit Shah, thus, he was brought back into the main stream and PM gave statements praising him. Of late, Shivraj has be- come emotional too and has been saying that if he loses then the women of MP, which he addresses as his sisters, will re- member him. Perhaps he too has this idea that he may lose. But according to me, all said and done, he is the leading candi- date for the post of CM and the face of party in MP as CM. The next candidate for CM’s chair is Narendra Singh Tomar. Then among oth- er candidates, there could be Scindia or Pa- tel as well and if ‘in principle’ decision is taken that they have bring a new face, then I think Tomar could be the front runner and as such, it is difficult to read what goes on in Narendra Modi Amit Shah’s minds. But then 2024 election would be right around the corner after the results come in and that aspect will also have to be factored in, so let’s see. For mental health too, there is no one solution alone. One man’s poison could be another’s elixir. I may not personally and individually be a Reiki believer. That’s not to say it will not work for another individual. Therefore, be open to, and explore the plethora of alternative healing modal- ities. In any case, we in India are bless- ed with a barrage of options – yoga, Pilates, Ayurveda, reiki, access bars, tarot, astrology – the list is endless. In fact, a growing number of Life Coaches and Healers are now combin- ing traditional best practices and spe- cific facets of multiple modalities and formulating their unique ethos and programs stemming from it. BE PRESENT, IN THE PRESENT I do not usually watch TV commer- cials. Ironically, having worked in ad- vertising is what brought be brutally close to the banal realities of the busi- ness. But I digress. Not in the least be- cause of on-demand TV, ads are a thing of the past – at least having to consume them. However, one particular TVC encapsulates this point of mine rather poignantly. At a junior school in the auditorium, a play is being staged. Children are performing as proud par- ents look on in nervous anticipation. And while every parent in the audience is recording the show on their respec- tive phones, the play ends. The parents continued recording, and one solitary yet palpable clap from the back of the seats was heard. Then, the gentleman clapping rises and is seen. A father, the only individual amongst the spectators did not take out his phone but had been carefully watching the show. No sur- prise that he was the only one who no- ticed the play had ended! The point is simple. We are all guilty of having lost ourselves to something – either to our devices, to past times, or to future planning and/or worry. In the process, we are forsaking the most critical facet of life – our ongoing pre- sent moment. A moment to live, expe- rience, relish and soak in fully. Many spiritual streams, leaders, gurus and philosophies have expounded upon the virtue of the ‘present moment’. My final piece of advice for sound mental health is to seriously and consciously try to be present, in the present. Back when I was a young child, one had the pleasure and privilege of con- structing one’s own systems. If one were an audiophile, one researched, tested, and put together one’s own, ideal, unique music set-up with an amalgam of various components from different makers. Healing then, could be approached similarly. A fusion of a few different elements that come together to work for each wonderfully peculiar indi- vidual. Because no two of us are the same. Then why should our healing circle be? he slightest hint of a com- mon cold pro- pels us to the doctor. Tragi- cally, the same cannot be said of psychological dis- tress and ailments; most of which fall undiagnosed, by the wayside, silently perpetuating an imminent and cataclysmic event that is often, a debilitat- ing, even fatal, physical condi- tion! While one recognizes the multiple barriers to acknowl- edging and accessing mental- health-help in India, especially the traditional psychotherapy kind; given the stigma taboo subject mental health is, the paucity of fundamental psycho- education, and a marketplace unfortunately infested with, amongst the many ethical qualified mental-health profes- sionals, questionable practi- tioners – there is a way out. T There is nothing quite like preventive and preemptive care. For mental health too, long before one reaches a juncture that warrants psy- chotherapeutic intervention, certain simple yet key steps can be adopted by each of us, to give ourselves the best shot at avoiding distress unrest in the first place. In a world where many psychological afflictions are related to, or caused by aggravated and sustained stress anxiety, a number of tools can alleviate the situation. PHYSICAL ACTIVITY Few pursuits relieve and vent stress quite like physical activity. A well-chronicled scientific fact, physical activity releases hormones that dispel worry, tension and anxiety, leaving the mind and body rejuvenated. A short little exer- cise regimen, be it a walk, hike, or yoga, will go a long way ALONE TIME One could argue that we are leading increas- ingly isolated lives in any case. So why the need for alone time? Let us define it more specifi- cally. Ten to fifteen minutes in an otherwise hectic and stressful 24-hour cycle to oneself, with oneself, sacrosanct, specifically engaged in an activity that makes us ‘happy’. Sketching, writing, painting, photography; most any crea- tive expression positively preoccupies and pre- disposes the mind. NATURAL-NATURE Irrespective of religious spiritual persuasion, most of us can agree that the innate connection between man and nature is undeniable. To in- clude, if not regularly, sporadic bursts of time spent in and amongst nature can have a cathar- tic and healing effect. Pack that dusty rucksack and go camping! QUALITY SOCIAL TIME In the blind rat race that life tends to become; a concerted effort to spend quality, not quantity time, with close family and close friends, huge- ly and positively impacts and informs the mind. Don’t procrastinate anymore. Pick up the phone and make that long-pending call to your best friend from school! MediaLiteracyMatters Mitali Dusad mitalidusad@firstindia.co.in n November 16, Rajasthan joins the na- tion in cele- brating National Press Day, an occasion that symbolizes the essence of a free and responsible press in our democratic landscape. This day holds particular signifi- cance in Rajasthan, where a dynamic and di- verse media landscape plays a crucial role in re- flecting the state’s cul- tural richness and socio- political dynamism. AscitizensofRajasthan, we can actively contribute to making National Press Day meaningful by recog- nizing the importance of a free press. Supporting lo- cal journalism, subscribing to credible news sources, and engaging in informed discussions can enhance the quality of journalism in the state. Acknowledging the challenges faced by journalistsandappreciating their dedication to truth- telling fosters a culture of media responsibility. Additionally, promot- ing media literacy, espe- cially among the youth, is essential. Schools and community organisations can organize workshops to educate individuals on discerning reliable infor- mation sources, under- standing media biases, and navigating the digital landscape responsibly. National Press Day is a call for each citizen to champion the principles of a free press.
