ANALYISING
THE BEST BET
India won’t find aggressive bat-
ters in the Test arena overnight.
For that purpose, the best bet
would be for the BCCI to start
implementing Bazball approach
in India A tours and pick play-
ers who will take this style and
Indian Test cricket forward.
Fortunately, the Indian Test
squad announced for the tour
to the West Indies has young
talents like Yashasvi Jaiswal,
Ishan Kishan and Ruturaj
Gaikwad. If they play in their
naturally aggressive style, the
revamp of the national side
could be achieved quite quickly.
Given the dipping interest in
Test cricket in India in recent
decades, Bazball could well
be one crucial way of reviving
spectator interest in the long-
est format of the game.

he English sum-
mer is truly un-
derway as the
Ashes series be-
gan with a bang.
But one couldn’t help noticing
the total contrast between the
first Ashes Test and the Word
Test Championship (WTC) fi-
nal where India figured. Aus-
tralia defeated England by 2
wickets in the final hour of the
final day. In sharp contrast, the
WTC final was a laborious af-
fair and hardly seemed a con-
test between the Top 2 Test
teams. The pulsating first Ash-
es test was like a boxing match
between two heavyweights,
both refusing to budge. In the
process, the highly entertaining
Bazball style of the English
team, one which possibly led to
their narrow defeat, has now
ignited a hot debate among
cricket experts.
Bazball is a concept of all-
out aggressive cricket and has
been introduced by Brendon
McCullum and Ben Stokes as
a template for the England
team once they took over as
head coach and captain in mid-
2022. Since then, England have
won 11 tests with only 3 de-
feats, including in the first
Ashes test. In fact, their batters
have been so aggressive that
English opener Zack Crawley
fearlessly hit the first ball of the
Ashes series for a searing
boundary!
This style of play is as much
about batting attractively as
bowling with purpose. Other
countries have played similar
cricket but not with such con-
sistency. Bazball admirers be-
lieve Test cricket needs this
approach to remain above
white ball formats as the finest
expression of the sport. Many
now see Bazball as an attrac-
tive way to keep Test cricket
alive and engaging.
The entertainment that the
first Ashes Test provided, de-
spite having been played on
one of the most docile pitches,
was unmatched. The Edgbas-
ton test saw sell-out crowds.
England promised entertain-
ment, and they delivered big on
it. From the crowds to theAus-
tralian players, everyone was
on the edge of their seats, when
the first Test boiled down to the
final session. Two contrasting
styles going head-to-head was
a treat to watch as the conven-
tional cricket of the Aussies
clashed with England’s una-
bashed Bazball style.
With England losing the first
test, many are now questioning
their attacking game which in-
cluded a declaration on the first
day itself with Joe Root batting
on a 100 plus. Critics claim
Bazball is often too one-dimen-
sional to succeed in Test Crick-
et. Superstars like Ponting and
Nasser Husain have been open-
ly vocal in slamming this ap-
proach. They argue that while
England’s aggressive template
may be exciting, it is also self-
defeating. Many claim that in-
sistence on a super-charged
game all the time actually
makes it inflexible.
Some experts believe that in
a five-day game where match
situations change and strong
opponents likeAustralia evolve
counter strategies, there will
often be a need to reset. Tacti-
cally, a continuous adherence
to an ultra-aggressive approach
could make decision-making
of the rivals rather easy as they
could anticipate exactly what’s
going to come at them.
The current Ashes series has
now become a virtual referen-
dum on Bazball and England’s
defeat has stoked a lot of criti-
cism, led by several former
players from both sides. But
Stokes and McCullum have
promised to continue with Baz-
ball in Ashes series - they are
not planning to backdown de-
spite the setback in the first
test. After the Ashes, the Baz-
ball approach will also be test-
ed in Indian conditions when
the Ben Stokes-led side tour
India for a five-match Test se-
ries in 2024.
Are there any tactical chang-
es that the Indian team can draw
out of Bazball approach after
their consecutive defeats in the
WTC finals? The lesson for In-
dia is not just to adopt the new
model but also bring in players
who can implement the style on
the ground. In the recent WTC
Final, the Indians tried to ap-
proach the second innings with
an aggressive mindset but it did
not help their cause because
they simply did not have play-
ers who could do that for long.
Rohit, Pujara, Rahane andVirat
have been great players for In-
dia but they don’t seem the
most-suited for this style.
India won’t find aggressive
batters in the Test arena over-
night. For that purpose, the best
bet would be for the BCCI to
start implementing Bazball ap-
proach in India A tours and
pick players who will take this
style and Indian Test cricket
forward. Fortunately, the Indi-
an Test squad announced for

the revamp of the national side
could be achieved quite quick-
ly. Given the dipping interest in

one crucial way of reviving
spectator interest in the longest

for delimitation of the

a churn has again begun
in state politics pitting
the ruling BJPagainst the

The last time a delimi-

was carried out in Assam
was in 1976. While sev-
eral states saw a fresh
delimitation exercise in
2000, it had been de-
ferred in Assam because
political parties opposed
it citing the then updation
of the NRC in the state.
With the NRC process
yet to be concluded, the
state’s Opposition parties
continue to be opposed to
delimitation.The current
delimitation process is
being carried out on the
basis of the 2001 Census,
which has been another
bone of contention with
Opposition parties pro-

however hailed EC’s

In the matter related to

ship on 5 hectares in-
stead of 10, CM Ashok
Gehlot and Minister
Shanti Dhariwal had
taken a popular decision
three months ago which
had created an atmos-

the real estate sector.
According to the deci-
sion, important changes
were to be made in the
criteria of township de-

of the outer area of Ring
Road and National
Highways. But due to
the negligence of the bu-
reaucracy, the an-
nouncements are not be-
ing completed and there
is a major delay in im-
plementing popular de-
cisions of Gehlot and
Dhariwal. This delay in
implementation of deci-
sion is due to inaction of
UDH officials.
Moreover, despite the
passage of more than 3

matter has still not
reached any conclusion.
The JDA had issued a
notification on February
27 seeking objections

posed changes. A com-
mittee was also formed
under the chairmanship
of JDA secretary to set-
tle the objections. But
the objections were not
resolved even after two
and a half months of the
deadline
So this raises an ex-
tremely important ques-
tion: Why is UDH not
processing the file at an
accelerated pace? In the
prevailing situation, this
question is arising
among developers
promoters: Will the an-
nouncements made by
even by the CM and the

Jaipur: After all,
who gave wrong
information to CM
Gehlot? In Bhanpur Kalan
information was given about
the coming of A storm.
Due to the storm, informa-
tion was given about the
collapse of the tent and
then the installation of the
tent. Because of this, CM
stayed in Bharatpur for one
hour without any reason.
Whereas the reality was that
tent could not be fully in-
stalled at meeting venue in
Bhanpur Kalan. When CM
asked MLA Gopal Meena
about the storm, Gopal said,
“There has not been any
strong wind for four days, let
alone any storm.” But with
this came a big question,
after all, who gave wrong
information to CM why?
Didn’t the district admin-
istration inspect venue of
meeting earlier? Meanwhile,
due to negligence in CM’s

FROM THE WORLD OF
edia influences
and convention-
al beauty stand-
ards have long
plagued society.
Thisissuetook
on new urgency
in May 2023 when the U.S. surgeon
general issued a major public advi-
sory over the links between social
media and youth mental health.
Research shows that images of
beauty as depicted in movies, tel-
evision and magazines can lead to
mental illness, issues with disor-
dered eating and body image dis-
satisfaction. These trends have
been documented in women and
men, in the LGBTQ+ community
and people of different racial and
ethnic backgrounds.
Experts have long suspected
that social media may be playing
a role in the growing mental health
crisis in young people. However,
the surgeon general’s warning is
one of the first public warnings
supported by robust research.
The U.S. surgeon general says
the youth mental health crisis is
the ‘defining public health chal-
lenge of our time.’
SOCIAL MEDIA
CAN BE TOXIC
Body dissatisfaction among chil-
dren and adolescents is common-
place and has been linked to de-
creased quality of life, worsened
mood and unhealthy eating habits.
As an eating disorder and anxiety
specialist, I regularly work with cli-
entswhoexperienceeatingdisorder
symptoms, self-esteem issues and
anxiety related to social media.
I also have firsthand experience
with this topic: I am 15 years post-
recovery from an eating disorder,
and I grew up when people were
beginning to widely use social
media. In my view, the impact of
social media on diet and exercise
patterns needs to be further re-
searched to inform future policy
directions, school programming
and treatment.
The mental health of adoles-
cents and teens has been declining
for the past decade, and the COV-
ID-19 pandemic contributed to
worsening youth mental health
and brought it into the spotlight.
As the mental health crisis surges,
researchers have been taking a
close look at the role of social me-
dia in these increasing mental
health concerns.
THE PROS AND CONS
OF SOCIAL MEDIA
About 95% of children and adoles-
cents in the U.S. between the ages
of 10 and 17 are using social media
almost constantly.
Research has shown that social
media can be beneficial for finding
community support. However,
studies have also shown that the
use of social media contributes to
social comparisons, unrealistic ex-
pectations and negative mental
health effects.
In addition, those who have pre-
existing mental health conditions
tend to spend more time on social
media. People in that category are
more likely to self-objectify and
internalize the thin body ideal.
Women and people with preexist-
ing body image concerns are more
likely to feel worse about their
bodies and themselves after they
spend time on social media.
A BREEDING GROUND
FOR EATING DISORDERS
Arecent review found that, as with
mass media, the use of social me-
dia is a risk factor for the develop-
ment of an eating disorder, body
image dissatisfaction and disor-
dered eating. In this review, social
media use was shown to contribute
to negative self-esteem, social
comparisons, decreased emotional
regulation and idealized self-pres-
entation that negatively influenced
body image.
Another study called the Dove
Self-Esteem Project, published in
April 2023, found that 9 in 10 chil-
dren and adolescents ages 10 to 17
are exposed to toxic beauty con-
tent on social media and 1 in 2 say
that this has an impact on their
mental health.
Eating disorders are complex
mental illnesses that develop be-
cause of biological, social and psy-
chological factors. Eating disorder
hospitalizations and the
need for treatment have
dramatically in-
creased during
the pandemic.
Some reasons for this include
isolation, food scarcity, boredom
and social media content related to
weight gain, such as the “quaran-
tine15.”That was a reference to the
weight gain some people were ex-
periencing at the beginning of the
pandemic, similar to the “freshman
15” belief that one will gain 15
pounds in the first year of college.
Many teens whose routines were
disrupted by the pandemic turned
to eating disorder behaviours for
an often-false sense of control or
were influenced by family mem-
bers who held unhealthy beliefs
around food and exercise.
Researchers have also found
that increased time at home during
the pandemic led to more social
media use by young people and
therefore more exposure to toxic
body image and dieting social me-
dia content. While social media
alone will not cause eating disor-
ders, societal beliefs about beauty,
which are amplified by social me-
dia, can contribute to the develop-
ment of eating disorders.
According to a report from the
Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention, 42% of high school
students say they feel ‘persistently
sad’ and ‘hopeless.’
‘THINSPO’ AND ‘FITSPO’
Toxic beauty standards online
include the normalization of cos-
metic and surgical procedures and
pro-eating-disorder content, which
promotes and romanticizes eating
disorders. For instance, social me-
dia sites have promoted trends
such as “thinspo,” which is fo-
cused on the thin ideal, and
“fitspo,” which perpetu-
ates the belief of there is a
perfect body that can be achieved
with dieting, supplements and ex-
cessive exercise.
Research has shown that social
media content encouraging “clean
eating” or dieting through pseudo-
scientific claims can lead to obses-
sive behaviour around dietary pat-
terns. These unfounded “wellness”
posts can lead to weight cycling,
yo-yo dieting, chronic stress, body
dissatisfaction and a higher likeli-
hood of muscular and thin-ideal
internalization.
Some social media posts fea-
ture pro-eating-disorder content,
which directly or indirectly en-
courages disordered eating. Other
posts promote deliberate manipu-
lation of one’s body, using harm-
ful quotes such as “Nothing tastes
as good as thin feels.” These posts
provide a false sense of connec-
tion, allowing users to bond over
a shared goal of losing weight,
altering one’s appearance and
continuing patterns of disordered
eating. While young people can
often recognize and understand
toxic beauty advice’s effects on
their self-esteem, they may con-
tinue to engage with this content.
This is in part because friends,
influencers and social media algo-
rithms encourage people to follow
certain accounts. Not all teens are
on social media.
HOW POLICY CHANGES
COULD HELP
Legislators across the U.S. are pro-
posing different regulations for
social media sites.
Policy recommendations in-
clude increased transparency from
s o - cial media companies, the
creation of higher standards of pri-
vacy for children’s data and pos-
sible tax incentives and social re-
sponsibility initiatives that would
discourage companies and market-
ers from using altered photos.
PHONE-FREE ZONES
Small steps at home to cut down on
social media consumption can also
make a difference. Parents and car-
egivers can create phone-free peri-
ods for the family. Examples of this
include putting phones away while
the family watches a movie togeth-
er or during mealtimes.
Adults can also help by model-
ling healthy social media behav-
iours and encouraging children
and adolescents to focus on build-
ing connections and engaging in
valued activities.
Mindful social media consump-
tion is another helpful approach.
This requires recognizing what one
is feeling during social media
scrolling. If spending time on social
media makes you feel worse about
yourself or seems to be causing
mood changes in your child, it may
be time to change how you or your
child interact with social media.

  • 4. ANALYISING THE BEST BET India won’t find aggressive bat- ters in the Test arena overnight. For that purpose, the best bet would be for the BCCI to start implementing Bazball approach in India A tours and pick play- ers who will take this style and Indian Test cricket forward. Fortunately, the Indian Test squad announced for the tour to the West Indies has young talents like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ishan Kishan and Ruturaj Gaikwad. If they play in their naturally aggressive style, the revamp of the national side could be achieved quite quickly. Given the dipping interest in Test cricket in India in recent decades, Bazball could well be one crucial way of reviving spectator interest in the long- est format of the game. THEBAZBALLDEBATE ShouldTeamIndiaAdoptit? Siddhaarth Mahan The writer is a specialist on Sports and Cinema who works as an actor in the Hindi film industry he English sum- mer is truly un- derway as the Ashes series be- gan with a bang. But one couldn’t help noticing the total contrast between the first Ashes Test and the Word Test Championship (WTC) fi- nal where India figured. Aus- tralia defeated England by 2 wickets in the final hour of the final day. In sharp contrast, the WTC final was a laborious af- fair and hardly seemed a con- test between the Top 2 Test teams. The pulsating first Ash- es test was like a boxing match between two heavyweights, both refusing to budge. In the process, the highly entertaining Bazball style of the English team, one which possibly led to their narrow defeat, has now ignited a hot debate among cricket experts. Bazball is a concept of all- out aggressive cricket and has been introduced by Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes as a template for the England team once they took over as head coach and captain in mid- 2022. Since then, England have won 11 tests with only 3 de- feats, including in the first Ashes test. In fact, their batters have been so aggressive that English opener Zack Crawley fearlessly hit the first ball of the Ashes series for a searing boundary! This style of play is as much about batting attractively as bowling with purpose. Other countries have played similar cricket but not with such con- sistency. Bazball admirers be- lieve Test cricket needs this approach to remain above white ball formats as the finest expression of the sport. Many now see Bazball as an attrac- tive way to keep Test cricket alive and engaging. The entertainment that the first Ashes Test provided, de- spite having been played on one of the most docile pitches, was unmatched. The Edgbas- ton test saw sell-out crowds. England promised entertain- ment, and they delivered big on it. From the crowds to theAus- tralian players, everyone was on the edge of their seats, when the first Test boiled down to the final session. Two contrasting styles going head-to-head was a treat to watch as the conven- tional cricket of the Aussies clashed with England’s una- bashed Bazball style. With England losing the first test, many are now questioning their attacking game which in- cluded a declaration on the first day itself with Joe Root batting on a 100 plus. Critics claim Bazball is often too one-dimen- sional to succeed in Test Crick- et. Superstars like Ponting and Nasser Husain have been open- ly vocal in slamming this ap- proach. They argue that while England’s aggressive template may be exciting, it is also self- defeating. Many claim that in- sistence on a super-charged game all the time actually makes it inflexible. Some experts believe that in a five-day game where match situations change and strong opponents likeAustralia evolve counter strategies, there will often be a need to reset. Tacti- cally, a continuous adherence to an ultra-aggressive approach could make decision-making of the rivals rather easy as they could anticipate exactly what’s going to come at them. The current Ashes series has now become a virtual referen- dum on Bazball and England’s defeat has stoked a lot of criti- cism, led by several former players from both sides. But Stokes and McCullum have promised to continue with Baz- ball in Ashes series - they are not planning to backdown de- spite the setback in the first test. After the Ashes, the Baz- ball approach will also be test- ed in Indian conditions when the Ben Stokes-led side tour India for a five-match Test se- ries in 2024. Are there any tactical chang- es that the Indian team can draw out of Bazball approach after their consecutive defeats in the WTC finals? The lesson for In- dia is not just to adopt the new model but also bring in players who can implement the style on the ground. In the recent WTC Final, the Indians tried to ap- proach the second innings with an aggressive mindset but it did not help their cause because they simply did not have play- ers who could do that for long. Rohit, Pujara, Rahane andVirat have been great players for In- dia but they don’t seem the most-suited for this style. India won’t find aggressive batters in the Test arena over- night. For that purpose, the best bet would be for the BCCI to start implementing Bazball ap- proach in India A tours and pick players who will take this style and Indian Test cricket forward. Fortunately, the Indi- an Test squad announced for the tour to the West Indies has young talents like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ishan Kishan and Ru- turaj Gaikwad. If they play in their naturally aggressive style, the revamp of the national side could be achieved quite quick- ly. Given the dipping interest in Test cricket in India in recent decades, Bazball could well be one crucial way of reviving spectator interest in the longest format of the game. Agencies Guwahati With the Election Com- mission (EC) recently releasing a draft proposal for delimitation of the Lok Sabha andAssembly constituencies in Assam, a churn has again begun in state politics pitting the ruling BJPagainst the Opposition parties ahead of the 2024 general elec- tions. The last time a delimi- tation of constituencies was carried out in Assam was in 1976. While sev- eral states saw a fresh delimitation exercise in 2000, it had been de- ferred in Assam because political parties opposed it citing the then updation of the NRC in the state. Naresh Sharma Jaipur CM Ashok Gehlot while addressing the inaugura- tion foundation stone laying programme of various development works after visiting the Inflation Relief Camp PGKS in Bhanpur Kalan village located in Jam- waramgarh area of Jaipur district on Friday, said that the State gov- ernment is giving con- crete shape to develop- ment works according to public sentiments. “Many important schemes have been im- plemented in Raj to pro- vide relief to masses. These plans are not tem- porary but permanent and will be further strengthened in future. The State government has left no stone un- turned in development works. State Govt is continuously contem- plating to bring many more good schemes in coming days,” The Chief Minister inaugu- rated and laid the foun- dation stone of develop- ment works costing Rs 243.97 cr. He interacted with the beneficiaries and took feedback about the schemes while in- specting Mehangai Ra- hat Camps. The benefi- ciaries expressed their gratitude to CM Gehlot for the schemes which provide immediate relief from inflation. Gehlot said, “Many works have been done in the last four and a half years for all-round de- velopment in Jamwara- mgarh region. State gov- ernment has opened two colleges in Andhi, com- munity health center in Tala sub-district hos- pital in Jamvaramgarh. Whereas, Tehsil in Aan- dhi, Sub Tehsil in Tala has been established.” Abhishek Shrivastava Jaipur In the matter related to development of town- ship on 5 hectares in- stead of 10, CM Ashok Gehlot and Minister Shanti Dhariwal had taken a popular decision three months ago which had created an atmos- phere of enthusiasm in the real estate sector. According to the deci- sion, important changes were to be made in the criteria of township de- velopment on both sides of the outer area of Ring Road and National Highways. But due to the negligence of the bu- reaucracy, the an- nouncements are not be- ing completed and there is a major delay in im- plementing popular de- cisions of Gehlot and Dhariwal. This delay in implementation of deci- sion is due to inaction of UDH officials. Moreover, despite the passage of more than 3 and a half months, the matter has still not reached any conclusion. The JDA had issued a notification on February 27 seeking objections and suggestions till March 31 on the pro- posed changes. A com- mittee was also formed under the chairmanship of JDA secretary to set- tle the objections. But the objections were not resolved even after two and a half months of the deadline So this raises an ex- tremely important ques- tion: Why is UDH not processing the file at an accelerated pace? In the prevailing situation, this question is arising among developers promoters: Will the an- nouncements made by even by the CM and the Urban Development and Housing minister, not implemented? Bharatpur district has witnessed an unprecedented development in the last four and a half years. Because of this, CM stayed in Bharatpur for one hour without any reason. Whereas the reality was that tent could not be fully in- stalled at meeting venue in Bhanpur Kalan. When CM asked MLA Gopal Meena about the storm, Gopal said, “There has not been any strong wind for four days, let alone any storm.” But with this came a big question, after all, who gave wrong information to CM why? • 11. edia influences and convention- al beauty stand- ards have long plagued society. Thisissuetook on new urgency in May 2023 when the U.S. surgeon general issued a major public advi- sory over the links between social media and youth mental health. Research shows that images of beauty as depicted in movies, tel- evision and magazines can lead to mental illness, issues with disor- dered eating and body image dis- satisfaction. These trends have been documented in women and men, in the LGBTQ+ community and people of different racial and ethnic backgrounds. Experts have long suspected that social media may be playing a role in the growing mental health crisis in young people. However, the surgeon general’s warning is one of the first public warnings supported by robust research. The U.S. surgeon general says the youth mental health crisis is the ‘defining public health chal- lenge of our time.’ SOCIAL MEDIA CAN BE TOXIC Body dissatisfaction among chil- dren and adolescents is common- place and has been linked to de- creased quality of life, worsened mood and unhealthy eating habits. As an eating disorder and anxiety specialist, I regularly work with cli- entswhoexperienceeatingdisorder symptoms, self-esteem issues and anxiety related to social media. I also have firsthand experience with this topic: I am 15 years post- recovery from an eating disorder, and I grew up when people were beginning to widely use social media. In my view, the impact of social media on diet and exercise patterns needs to be further re- searched to inform future policy directions, school programming and treatment. The mental health of adoles- cents and teens has been declining for the past decade, and the COV- ID-19 pandemic contributed to worsening youth mental health and brought it into the spotlight. As the mental health crisis surges, researchers have been taking a close look at the role of social me- dia in these increasing mental health concerns. THE PROS AND CONS OF SOCIAL MEDIA About 95% of children and adoles- cents in the U.S. between the ages of 10 and 17 are using social media almost constantly. Research has shown that social media can be beneficial for finding community support. However, studies have also shown that the use of social media contributes to social comparisons, unrealistic ex- pectations and negative mental health effects. In addition, those who have pre- existing mental health conditions tend to spend more time on social media. People in that category are more likely to self-objectify and internalize the thin body ideal. Women and people with preexist- ing body image concerns are more likely to feel worse about their bodies and themselves after they spend time on social media. A BREEDING GROUND FOR EATING DISORDERS Arecent review found that, as with mass media, the use of social me- dia is a risk factor for the develop- ment of an eating disorder, body image dissatisfaction and disor- dered eating. In this review, social media use was shown to contribute to negative self-esteem, social comparisons, decreased emotional regulation and idealized self-pres- entation that negatively influenced body image. Another study called the Dove Self-Esteem Project, published in April 2023, found that 9 in 10 chil- dren and adolescents ages 10 to 17 are exposed to toxic beauty con- tent on social media and 1 in 2 say that this has an impact on their mental health. Eating disorders are complex mental illnesses that develop be- cause of biological, social and psy- chological factors. Eating disorder hospitalizations and the need for treatment have dramatically in- creased during the pandemic. Some reasons for this include isolation, food scarcity, boredom and social media content related to weight gain, such as the “quaran- tine15.”That was a reference to the weight gain some people were ex- periencing at the beginning of the pandemic, similar to the “freshman 15” belief that one will gain 15 pounds in the first year of college. Many teens whose routines were disrupted by the pandemic turned to eating disorder behaviours for an often-false sense of control or were influenced by family mem- bers who held unhealthy beliefs around food and exercise. Researchers have also found that increased time at home during the pandemic led to more social media use by young people and therefore more exposure to toxic body image and dieting social me- dia content. While social media alone will not cause eating disor- ders, societal beliefs about beauty, which are amplified by social me- dia, can contribute to the develop- ment of eating disorders. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 42% of high school students say they feel ‘persistently sad’ and ‘hopeless.’ ‘THINSPO’ AND ‘FITSPO’ Toxic beauty standards online include the normalization of cos- metic and surgical procedures and pro-eating-disorder content, which promotes and romanticizes eating disorders. For instance, social me- dia sites have promoted trends such as “thinspo,” which is fo- cused on the thin ideal, and “fitspo,” which perpetu- ates the belief of there is a perfect body that can be achieved with dieting, supplements and ex- cessive exercise. Research has shown that social media content encouraging “clean eating” or dieting through pseudo- scientific claims can lead to obses- sive behaviour around dietary pat- terns. These unfounded “wellness” posts can lead to weight cycling, yo-yo dieting, chronic stress, body dissatisfaction and a higher likeli- hood of muscular and thin-ideal internalization. Some social media posts fea- ture pro-eating-disorder content, which directly or indirectly en- courages disordered eating. Other posts promote deliberate manipu- lation of one’s body, using harm- ful quotes such as “Nothing tastes as good as thin feels.” These posts provide a false sense of connec- tion, allowing users to bond over a shared goal of losing weight, altering one’s appearance and continuing patterns of disordered eating. While young people can often recognize and understand toxic beauty advice’s effects on their self-esteem, they may con- tinue to engage with this content. This is in part because friends, influencers and social media algo- rithms encourage people to follow certain accounts. Not all teens are on social media. HOW POLICY CHANGES COULD HELP Legislators across the U.S. are pro- posing different regulations for social media sites. Policy recommendations in- clude increased transparency from s o - cial media companies, the creation of higher standards of pri- vacy for children’s data and pos- sible tax incentives and social re- sponsibility initiatives that would discourage companies and market- ers from using altered photos. PHONE-FREE ZONES Small steps at home to cut down on social media consumption can also make a difference. Parents and car- egivers can create phone-free peri- ods for the family. Examples of this include putting phones away while the family watches a movie togeth- er or during mealtimes. Adults can also help by model- ling healthy social media behav- iours and encouraging children and adolescents to focus on build- ing connections and engaging in valued activities. Mindful social media consump- tion is another helpful approach. This requires recognizing what one is feeling during social media scrolling. If spending time on social media makes you feel worse about yourself or seems to be causing mood changes in your child, it may be time to change how you or your child interact with social media. https://theconversation.com/mounting-research- documents-the-harmful-effects-of-social-media- use-on-mental-health-including-body-image- and-development-of-eating-disorders-206170 Pooja, Model Face Day of the YOUR DAILY HOROSCOPE by Saurabbh Sachdeva ARIES MAR 21 - APR 20 A vacation you only dreamed about is likely to become a reality soon.
