PM MODI SITS THROUGH
ALL SESSIONS OF DGPS’ MEET
Continued from page 1
There has been consid-
erable changes in the
format, topics covered,
deliverables at the meet
since 2014.
The number of busi-
ness sessions and topics
have increased signifi-
cantly with focus on im-
proving policing in ser-
vice of people.
Before 2014, delibera-
tions largely focused on
national security mat-
ters only
.
Since 2014, these con-
ferences have a twin fo-
cus of national security
as well as core policing
issues, including pre-
vention and detection of
crime,communitypolic-
ing, law and order, im-
proving police-image,
etc., a home ministry of-
ficial said.
Earlier, the confer-
ence was Delhi-centric
with officers coming to-
gether only for the con-
ference. Residing in the
same premises over a
period of 2-3 days has
served to build height-
ened sense of unity
amongst officers of all
cadres and organisa-
tions since 2014.
Direct interaction of
top brass of police with
the head of govern-
ment has resulted in
convergence of views
on crucial challenges
faced by the country
and emergence of doa-
ble recommendations,
the official said.
In the past few years,
the topics are selected
after detailed discus-
sions with the highest
echelons of the police
service.
Once selected, several
interactions on presen-
tations are held before
committees of DGs in
order to encourage par-
ticipation and to incor-
porate ideas from the
field and from younger
officers.
As a result, all presen-
tations are now broad-
based, content-intensive
and carry a set of co-
gent, actionable recom-
mendations.
Since 2015, detailed
follow-up of recommen-
dations of past confer-
ences is the norm and is
the topic of the first
businesssession,attend-
edbytheprimeminister
and the home minister.
Recommendations
are tracked closely by
the conference secretar-
iat, led by the Intelli-
gence Bureau, with the
help of nodal officers of
the states.
Decisions made in
the past few conferenc-
es led to significant
policy changes leading
to improvement of po-
licing in the country,
including setting high-
er standards for effec-
tive policing in rural
and urban areas, and
improved methods of
modern policing, based
on smart parameters.

Lucknow: In a giant
leap towards eradicat-
ing coronavirus, Uttar
Pradesh on Saturday
witnessed the steepest
decline in the number
of fresh cases as the
state limited the infec-
tions to five, making it
the lowest single-day
tally.
Indicating consis-

second wave of the
pandemic, of the 75 dis-
tricts, no fresh infec-
tions were reported
from as many as 70 dis-
tricts in last 24 hours.
The most populous
state, in sharp contrast
to other major states
has been successfully
taming the raging dis-
ease. Where the other
states have been wit-
nessing a greater surge
of fresh Covid-19 infec-
tions, UP has restricted
the daily-case count
below 50 for over three
consecutive months.
Consequently, UP,
pushing the Covid
graph southwards, has
maintained the daily
Covid test positivity
rate (TPR) — the num-
ber of positive cases
against the total tests
done — at 0.01 per cent,
the lowest in the

India outclass Kiwis,
as Ashwin-Harshal
Star in Ranchi!
ften in sports when a tried-tested formula brings
failures, it’s usually a good time to look for new
beginnings. This is precisely what Team India have
done to their T20 game - first by bringing in a new
captain-coach duo, then backing Ashwin who was
kept out of the shortest format for a few years in
and now handing a debut to a wily speedster in Harshal Patel.
The result -Team India bagging the bilateral series against New
Zealand 2-0 with a game to go!
In the past few matches, the Indian team has indicated clearly
that they are willing to learn from their crucial errors in the just
concluded World Cup and rebuild with fresh ideas. One of which
is also the aggressive opening partnerships of Rohit Sharma and
K.L.Rahul, who steered India to an easy win by 7 wickets with
16 balls remaining in their 2nd T20 match against the Kiwis.
Rohit’s luck with tosses continued and he chose to bowl first
in conditions laden with dew. Even before the match started,
there was heavy dew on the ground which was glistening in the
evening lights. It was expected to be a high scoring affair and the
New Zealand innings started on a promising note. In the first
powerplay, the Kiwis reached 64 for 1 and seemed set for a huge
score. But the introduction of Ravi Ashwin changed the equation
quickly
. Bowling with guile and variations, he starved the Kiwis
of runs in an enviable spell of 19 for 1 in his 4 overs.
Ashwin has repaid the faith invested in him with superb per-
formances since his comeback in T20s. After his return, Ashwin
has bowled 71 deliveries to right handers conceding just 51 runs.
Moreover, there are no boundaries hit off him by right-handed
batters. The dynamics of the Indian side have changed dramati-
cally through Ashwin’s skillful performances and his presence
in White ball cricket now
looks certain for a long
period, especially since
the next ODI World Cup
is to be played in India in
2023. He was a part of the
2011 World Cup winning
side and India will do
well to keep him playing
consistently
.
After the powerplay,
Harshal Patel, who has
faced the hard grind of
First-Class cricket along
with pressures of the
IPL, shrugged aside the
nerves of his first inter-
national game. Using his
slower ball effectively
, he
ended his incisive spell
with 25 runs and 2 wick-
ets–aneffortthatearned
him the Player of the
Match award. India’s im-
pressive bowling show
as a unit choked the Kiwi
batters and they put up a
paltry total of just 153.
The Indian openers
have been on a roll after the early losses in the T20 World Cup
and on Friday evening their sizzling century stand eased India’s
run chase. In the effort, Rohit-Rahul equalled the record for the
most number of 100 run partnerships with Babar Azam and Mo-
hammad Rizwan. While Rohit was slow to begin with, KL Rahul
was at his aggressive best and ensured that the chase remained
on course. He hit 2 sixes in his innings of 65 but his flat six over
covers stunned the Kiwi skipper, Tim Southee, and brought fans
to their feet. Later, Rohit joined the party and completed his fifty
with 5 sixes. India stuttered for a couple of overs, but the openers
had put the team in such a commanding position that even 3
quick wickets by Southee weren’t enough to stop India from
romping home with 16 balls to spare.

and the rest of the key players will be back. Also, most of the
benched players of the current series may not even figure in the
squad. In fact, it was excessive chopping and changing, when the
team was doing well, that caused the 2019 ODI World Cup debacle
where India was confused about its best combination.
As for New Zealand, they would look to salvage a win and keep
their pride intact. They have looked a jaded unit but would be keen
toprovethattheyweretheworthyRunners-UpintherecentWorld

Kiwis and bag the current series convincingly with a 3-0 sweep.

THE TIME WHEN
COLOUR OF SKIN
MATTERED THE MOST!
One day I decided to go to
the market to buy a tooth
brush, shaving cream
and soap. All shops were
owned by Indians. The
other man was a black
customer. It took me a
moment to realize that he
was Prime Minister
Chona. We greeted each
other. He had no security
staff with him. As soon as
the shopkeeper saw me he
stopped serving the Prime
Minister. I was appalled
uring my long life I had the good
fortune to meet and get to know
a dozen or more African leaders
who led the freedom struggle in
their countries. South of the Sa-
hara all countries are black. All
except Ethiopia and Liberia,
were colonies of Britain, France
and Portugal.
A minuscule minority of big-
oted, rabidly racist whites ruled
all the South Saharan countries.
The blacks had no rights. Most
did menial jobs. Ninety percent
were illiterate. No elections at
any level were held. Even Indi-
ans did not mix with, “these ka-
las” Blacks had to stand several
yards away from Indian shops.
Whatever they bought was flung
at the blacks.
I was High Commissioner of
India to Zambia from September
1977 to April 1980. Zambia had
attained independence in 1964. I
had got to know President Ken-
neth Kaunda in the summer of
1962. He appeared as a petitioner
before the Decolonization Com-
mittee of which I was Rappor-
teur. One day I decided to go to
the market to buy a tooth brush,
shaving cream and soap. All
shops were owned by Indians.
The other man was a black cus-
tomer. It took me a moment to
realize that he was Prime Minis-
ter Chona. We greeted each oth-
er. He had no security staff with
him. As soon as the shopkeeper
saw me he stopped serving the
Prime Minister. I was appalled.
In Hindi I said to him, “Do you
not know who he is. He is the
Prime Minister of Zambia.” Re-
sponse, “Muje pata hai. Par kala
to hai.” I let him have it, asking
the man to serve the PM first.
I profusely apologised to
Prime Minister. He smiled, put
out his hand. Next day I sent for
the shopkeeper. He promptly ar-
rived at my official residence. I
had one of my Indian guard with
me. By this time the man was
terrified. I told him I could have
his shop closed for insulting the
Prime Minister. “It is the likes of
you that get India a bad name in
African countries. Do not ever
do what you did yesterday.” He
promised with folded hands.
In the autumn the committee
took a tour of Morocco, Ethiopia
and Tanzania, a year back it was
still Tanganyika. In Morocco the
Committee did not have much to
do. One cannot but admire the
wonderful climate and beauty of
the country
. We were received by
the King in Rabat, the capital. I
fell for Casablanca (Remember
the film) and the fabulous and
fantastic city of Marrakesh.
Ihavewrittenaboutthismany
years back. The story is so good
that I am sharing it with a new
generation of readers.
From Morocco we flew to Ad-
dis Ababa. The airport was not
impressive. More goats than hu-
man beings were to be seen. Our
audience with His Imperial Maj-
esty was scheduled for the next
afternoon. The Ethiopian dele-
gate in the committee, Kifle
Wodajo, instructed us on the
elaborate palace protocol.
We arrived at the grand palace
and were awestruck by the lions
walking unconcerned in the
vast palace grounds. The com-
mittee members were taken to a
large hall. No chairs. We stood,
knowing not what to expect next.
The Emperor, very short, sud-
denly appeared, looking rather
stiff in his military uniform. All
Ethiopians present, including
Kifle Wodajo, prostrated before
him. His Imperial Majesty’s en-
tourage included a Chihuahua
who was shown due reverence
by our hosts. We later discovered
that the choice of the tiny canine
was deliberate. Our committee
came very low in the Ethiopian
pecking order and did not merit
a bigger canine presence. Before
we filed past, His Imperial Maj-
esty said a few words in Amhar-
ic and wished our delegation
well. Kifle Wodajo was last in the
line. He crawled, lowered his
head and walked backwards so
as not to show his posterior to
the King of Kings.
The emperor had a gruesome-
ly tragic end. He was dethroned
by the army, and on 27 August
1975, was smothered to death
with a wet pillow and buried be-
neath a palace lavatory
.
Two of his granddaughters
were imprisoned in a filthy dun-
geon, and their heads shaved.
This was on 11 September 1975.
In October Winston Churchill Jr,
MP and grandson of Sir Winston
Churchill, met me at India
House. He spoke of the terrible
plight of the princesses and
wondered if Prime Minister In-
dira Gandhi could impress upon
thearmyregimetoreleasethem.
I informed the P.M. She did dis-
creetly intervene on purely hu-
manitarian grounds and they
were allowed to leave Ethiopia.
Both were released and flew to
England. Thus ended the oldest
dynasty in the world, older than
that of Japan.

New Delhi:Withasense
of urgency
, the NDA ad-
ministration is seen
moving in the direction
of finding a new chair-
man as well as Member
(Finance) for NHAI.
Most probably
, it may on
its own, without going
through any formal pro-
cess, choose an officer
from 1990-1993 batch
IAS. Even as this pro-
cess is on, the search-
cum-selection-Commit-
tee(SCSC)issaidtohave
completed the exercise
torecommendnamesfor
selection as Member-Fi-
nance of NHAI.
NHAI holds an impor-
tant place in the NDA’s
political calculation
because the uninter-
rupted and rapid con-
struction of highways
can be showcased as a
demonstrable example
of the administration’s
accomplishment.
Sources say that there
are five shortlisted can-
didates for Member-Fi-
nance from a list of nine
applicants. This critical
post has been vacant for
the last two years.
NHAI consists of a
full-time Chairman,
and five full-time Mem-
bers, and four part-time
Members.
Despite its achieve-
ments on other fronts,
NHAI has not been
treated well in terms of
the appointment of key
personnel including its
chairman.
Like the post of Mem-
ber-Finance, the Mem-
ber (PPP) post has also
been vacant for over
two years though there
was an attempt to fill it
last year but was some-
how SCSC process was
stopped midway
.
The post of NHAI
Chairman fell vacant
after Sukhbir Singh
Sandhu, a 1988 batch
IAS, was repatriated to
his parent cadre (Utta-
rakhand) in the first
week of July this year
to become the state
Chief Secretary
.
Unfortunately, it’s a
harsh reality that NHAI
is scheduled to get its
eighth chairman in a
span of barely six years
since August 2015. Two
of its chairmen N N
Sinha and Sanjeev Ran-
jan had terms only for 7
and 5 months .
The frequent change
of the chief of the high-
way building and main-
tenance organization
has been a problem
since 2006 barring three
years during 2012-15
when R P Singh served
a full term. Reportedly,
he was the last chair-
man to be selected
through a search-cum-
selection process.
Insiders say that af-
ter Singh, none of the
Chairmen came
through the SCSC route
and this time also the
Chairman is expected
to be appointed by ACC
directly very soon.
Since NHAI deals
with complicated issues
relating to contracts
and disputes officers,
its senior officials need
time to hone skills and
acquire experience but
in most cases, by the
time their learning
process reaches matu-
rity, they are moved
for one reason or the
other leaving the mam-
moth organization to
face its fate.

‘INDIA WILL GIVE FITTING REPLY IF ANY
COUNTRY TRIES TO OCCUPY ITS LAND’
Having good ties with neighbours has been India’s culture, some people don’t understand this, says Rajnath
Pithoragarh: Defence
Minister Rajnath Singh
on Saturday said India
wants good relations
with its neighbours but
warned that it will give
a fitting reply to any
country that attempts
to occupy even an inch
of its land.
Singh, a senior BJP
leader, was in poll-
bound Uttarakhand to
launch the second leg
of the 'Shaheed Sam-
man Yatra' from
Jhaulkhet Moonakot in
Pithoragarh district.
We want good ties
with our neighbours.
Indiahasneverattacked
any country. Neither
has it ever occupied a
foreign territory. Hav-
ing good ties with neigh-
bours has been India's
culture but some people
don't understand this. I
don't know whether it is
their habit or tempera-
ment, he said.
Naming Pakistan,
Singh said it keeps try-
ing to destabilise India
through terrorist activ-
ities and a stern mes-
sage has already been
given to it.
We have given a clear
message to our neigh-
bour on the western bor-
der that if it cross its
limits, we will just not
retaliate on the borders
but can even cross over
into its territory and do
surgical and airstrikes,
he said.
We have one more
neighbour (which does
not seem to understand
things), the defence
minister said without
naming China.
Singh said he must
make it clear that if
there is an attempt by
any country in the
world to occupy even
an inch of our land, In-
dia will give a fitting
reply to it.
The defence minister
said there was an at-
tempt to create misap-
prehensions in Nepal
about a road from Lip-
ulekh Pass to Mansaro-
var through Dharchula
that was inaugurated
by him recently
.
But it has failed to af-
fect our close cultural
tieswithNepal,hesaid.
Conferring Nepal
Army Chief General
Prabhu Ram Sharma
with the honorary rank
of Indian Army Chief
recently is a reasser-
tion of India's close cul-
tural ties with Nepal,
Singh said.
Launching the sec-
ond leg of the ‘Shaheed
Samman Yatra', Singh
said the state govern-
ment should ensure
that names of matyrs
and the names of their
villages should be in-
scribed on the Sainya
Dham being built in
Dehradun as a memo-
rial tribute to them.

LOVE DOESN'T MEAN CONSENT FOR
SEX, SAYS KERALA HIGH COURT
‘LEGAL LOOPHOLE IN MAINTENANCE
LAW LETTING OFFENDERS SLIP AWAY’
Kochi: Helplessness in the face of inevitable com-
pulsion cannot be considered as consent, Kerala
High Court has said while
considering an appeal filed
by a rape convict. Justice R
Narayana Pisharadi, in his or-
der said merely because the
victim was in love with the
accused, it cannot be presumed that she had given
consent for sexual intercourse. Court said there is a
gulf of difference between consent and submission
and every consent involves a submission but the
converse does not follow.
Kochi: The Delhi High Court has expressed its
concern over legal loopholes in the maintenance
law letting offending parties to slip away as it set
aside an order directing payment by a man to his
'wife' after it was found that both the parties had
other living spouses. Justice Subramonium Prasad,
who was dealing with the man's challenge to the trial
court order directing payment of maintenance under
Section 125 Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), said
that while he sympathised with the position of the
woman, he was constrained to deny her maintenance
according to the applicable law as a second wife
whose marriage is void on account of the survival of
the first marriage would not be a legally wedded wife.
Lucknow: The CBI has charged three people,
including Anand Giri, with abetment and criminal
conspiracy in connection with the alleged suicide

September. Apart from Anand, who was Narendra
Giri's disciple, Adya Prasad Tiwari and Sandeep
Tiwari were also named in the chargesheet. All
three had been named in Narendra Giri's suicide
note; he accused them of mentally harassing him,
following which the police filed a FIR with charges
of abetting suicide.

LONG WAIT FOR
SHIVPAL YADAV
There appears to be no end to
the long wait of Pragatisheel
Samajwadi Party (PSP). (Lohia)
president Shivpal Yadav to enter
into an alliance with Samajwadi
Party or merge his party into it.
Speaking to media, SP president
Akhilesh Yadav said Uncle would
be given full respect. However, so
far no development from SP has
been made officially as to when
this “Sammaan” (respect) would
be bestowed on uncle who has
been waiting for two
years. Speaking to the media
once, Shivpal said that, “I have
been seeking this (alliance with
Samajwadi Party) for the last 2
years. It will be great if it
happens.” Shivpal Yadav has
repeatedly said that he was ready
to merge his party into SP if his
workers are honourably adjusted
to the party. Following the policy
of forgiving and forgetting, the
elder Yadav has been acting soft
on SP for quite sometime
sending signals repeatedly to the
nephew to settle the issue. During
Diwali celebrations, when the
Yadav family had assembled at
Safai, Akhilesh said that he would
enter into an alliance with his
uncle’s party. With the 2022 UP
assembly election fast
approaching, Shivpal Yadav is
eager to settle the issue so that
future action plans could be
chalked out. But Akhilesh while
sewing up alliances with the other
smaller parties has so far not
taken a decision about PSP. Now
all eyes are fixed on November 22
when the family would be together
to celebrate the birthday of SP
patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav to
settle the issue between “Chacha-
Bhatija”. —First India Bureau
EMPLOYEES OF
MUNICIPAL
CORPORATION
THEIR MULTIPLE
PROXIES
The officers are taking so many
efforts to make Lucknow a
smart city by making smart plans,
but are not aware that their
employees are taking everything
for granted. After the failure of the
Biometric and smartwatch used to
mark the attendance of the
employees in the Municipal
Corporation, Nagar Nigam gave its
work agency smart mobiles for
marking attendance of employees.
But cleaning workers for this too
found a way out. They have to
mark their attendance by turning
on the software installed in their
phones but the surprising thing is
that one employee takes the
phones of 4 person and turns on
the location of all the devices and
then the devices show that they all
are on duty in their allotted area in
the field. But, 50% of the staff is
not even on the spot (real time).
When the officers came to know
about this, they got it investigated
secretly and came to know that
their employees were playing
them and no staff was working on
the spot in real time. The officers
have now issued instructions to
take action against the working
organisations. And, now the
question arises that what will be
the next move of the municipal
corporation in order to take the
attendance to complete the smart
city project.

SACK AJAY MISHRA:
PRIYANKA TO PM
JUSTICE FOR LAKHIMPUR VICTIMS
First India Bureau
Lucknow: The AICC
general secretary Pri-
yanka Gandhi today
demanded immediate
dismissal of minister
of state for home Ajay
Mishra Teni, whose
son Ashish Mishra is
a key accused in the
Lakhimpur Khiri vio-
lence on October 3
where four farmers
were mowed down by
the minister SUV. In-
teracting with media
persons in Lucknow
on Saturday, Congress
leader Gandhi read
out the letter written
to the PM. “Yesterday
you repealed the three
far laws while accept-
ing that they were be-
ing forced upon the
farmers. I have read in
the newspapers that
you are in Lucknow
today to attend the
DGP conference and
will meet with the top
officials of the coun-
try who are responsi-
ble for maintaining
law and order.”
“The entire country
saw the barbarity
done with the farmers
in Lakhimpur. You
must be knowing that
the main accused in
this incident is the son
of Union MoS Home
in your government.
Due to political pres-
sure, the UP govern-
ment has been trying
to silence the voice for
justice since begin-
ning. Honourable Su-
preme Court has also
remarkedthatitseems
that the government is
trying to save a par-
ticular accused in this
case,” said Gandhi.
It may be recalled
that eight persons, in-
cluding four farmers,
had lost their lives in
the Lakhimpur Kheri
violence on October 3
after an SUV Thar had
ploughed into a crowd
of farmers protesting
against MoS Ajay
Mishra Teni and the
visit of UP Deputy CM
Keshav Maurya. After
four farmers were
mowed down, the vio-
lence escalated and
three BJP workers
were lynched by the
angry farmers while a
local journalist also
lost his life as he got
caught in the violence.
“Yesterday while ad-
dressing the nation
you had said you are
repealing the laws in
farmers’ interest with
true intent and pure
heart. If this is all true,
thenyoushouldensure
justice for the families
of the deceased farm-
ers in Lakhimpur. If
you share the stage
withhimthenitwillbe
an insult to those 700
farmers as well who
lost their lives during
the farmers’ protest,”
she added.
Kanpur: A day after
Prime Minister Naren-
dra Modi announced
the repealing of the
three Central farm
laws, Jamiat Ulema-e-
Hind national president
Maulana Arshad Mada-
ni on Saturday said that
the Citizenship
(Amendment) Act
should also be repealed
otherwise the Muslim
community will have to
bear its brunt. While
interacting with media
here, Madani said, “It’s
believed that Laws
(Farm Laws) were re-
pealed as polls are close.
We think that (CAA-
NRC) is concerned with
nationality and Mus-
lims will have to bear
its brunt. Power of pub-
lic strongest, so this
(CAA) should also be
repealed.” He congratu-
lated the farmers who
continued their protest,
and said, “Similarly, we
want the government to
roll back the Act that is
going to hurt Muslims.
They too are citizens of
India just like others. If
they’re affected, the
government should feel
it in a similar manner.”
Farmers have been pro-
testing the Centre’s
three farm laws since
they were passed in
2020. Similarly, protests
had erupted in parts of
the country against the
CAA. The CAA allows
persecuted minorities
belonging to the Hindu,
Sikh, Jain, Buddhist,
Parsi, and Christian
communities from Pa-
kistan, Bangladesh, and
Afghanistan to avail of
Indian citizenship. Ac-
cording to the provi-
sions of the act, people
belonging to these com-
munities who arrived
in India till December
31, 2014, due to religious
persecution in these
three countries will not
be treated as illegal mi-
grants but will be pro-
vided with Indian citi-
zenship. —ANI
Lucknow: The Cen-
tre’s decision to repeal
the three farm laws
came after an intense
agitation, but it is bet-
ter late than never, and
is welcomed, BSP chief

. However, the for-
mer Uttar Pradesh
chief minister said,
there is doubt on the
BJP government’s in-
tention because this
decision is being
termed as that of “elec-
toral selfishness and
compulsion”. Prime
Minister Narendra
Modi on Friday an-
nounced repeal of the
three agri laws which
triggered a year of pro-
tests by farmers and
also apologised to the
people over his govern-
ment not being able to
“convince” a section of
farmers about the
“truth” regarding the
legislations’ benefits.
The decision comes
ahead of assembly polls
in five states early next
year, including Punjab
and politically crucial
Uttar Pradesh. The Ba-
hujan Samaj Party
(BSP) chief in a tweet in
Hindi said, “The an-
nouncement of repeal
of the three controver-
sial farm laws following
an intense agitation is
better late than never
(der aaye durust aaye),
and is welcomed.”
“But there is doubt
on the intention of the
BJP government as this
decision is termed as
that of electoral selfish-
ness and compulsion.
Hence, some concrete
decisions are needed,”
she said. —PTI

Senior UP Minister and

Priyanka Gandhi for
ignoring the problems
of farmers in Congress-

“Why is it that Pri-

that, “Priyanka owes
an answer to everyone
about why there was a
lathi charge on the
farmers in Rajasthan.
She should at least ut-
ter two words on the
struggle of farmers in
Congress-ruled states.”
Siddharth ques-
tioned Priyanka about
how the ‘Corporate

ly started worrying
about the farmers.
“For Priyanka, her

Lucknow: The Congress on Saturday observed
“Kisan Vijay Diwas” in UP, terming the repeal of

departed souls. UPCC president Ajay Kumar

Lucknow: Bahujan Sa-

mo Mayawati has ad-
vised the BJP govern-
ment through a tweet
on the announcement
of withdrawal of all the
three agricultural laws.
Mayawati welcomed
the announcement of
withdrawal of agricul-
tural laws after a strong
agitation in the country
as “late in the day”. But
Mayawati also termed
it as a decision of elec-
toral selfishness and
compulsion and said
that the intention of the
BJP government at the
Centre is also being
doubted.Therefore,
some more concrete de-
cisions need to be taken
in this regard.
She said a law should
be brought in to ensure

It would be appropriate
if the Central Govern-

registered against the
agitating farmers, ex-

With this, the war

WHY ARE FARMERS
STILL NOT
AGREEING?
Sources reveal that
the message to the
nation on Friday was
written weeks ago,
when Captain Ama-
rinder Singh had come
to meet PM Modi and
Amit Shah. The cap-
tain’s only request to
the PM and Shah was
that ‘it is imperative to
repeal all three agricul-
tural laws, only then
they can go among the
voters of Punjab with
revered saffron beliefs.
That happened, but
even after the PM’s an-
nouncement, the farm-
ers are still not agreea-
ble, they are waiting for
these laws to be re-
pealed in the Par-
liament, while
they are still
adamant on
their old
demand
for statutory guarantee
on MSP. But so much
distrust on the words of
the PM is not right, it is
a step to challenge the
dignity of an high con-
stitutional post of the
country
. The question is
also a serious one as to
what will happen to the
PM’s associate minister
AjayMishraTeniwhose
dismissal is demanded
by the farmers? The
farmers are still ada-
mant on their old de-
mands and in a little bit
of exuberant enthusi-
asm, they are aware of
the fact that their firm
intentions and indomi-
table spirit has reward-
ed them. But even for
the BJP government,
this delayed bet of PM
Modi is not going
to be easy. When
the bill to repeal
the three agri-
cultural laws is
brought in the
House, the op-
p o s i t i o n
parties
will create a lot of hue
and cry over it, they will
also raise the issue of
the martyrdom of more
than 700 agitators, who
had to pay the price for
the movement. Is the
bill of the three agricul-
tural laws also going to
face the same fate as the
Modi government’s
‘amended land acquisi-
tion’ bill in 2014? which
on one fine day in 2015,
was suddenly declared
by the PM in ‘Mann Ki
Baat’ that the govern-
ment will take it back.
But will today in a
changed scenario, will
millions of broken
hearts and shattered be-
liefs be restored, includ-
ing the pain of losing
their loved ones?
BJP’S UP POLL
STARTEGY
Right now it will
take time to repeal
all three agricultural
laws, but BJP has start-
ed working on the poli-
tics of expansion. In
Punjab, Captain
A m a r i n d e r
has come
openly in BJP’s court,
while in UP
, the damage
control campaign of
the saffron party has
also started in over one
hundred seats under
the influence of farm-
ers. Most of these seats
are from western UP, a
region dominated by
Jats. Anyway, Jats are
among the traditional
BJP voters from the be-
ginning. Remember
Amit Shah’s 40-minute
leakedaudioclip,which
claimed that Jat broth-
ers are our own. On the
one hand, now where
the Jat leaders of BJP
will go from village to
village in western UP to
persuade the angry
Jats stress-
ing that
‘Prime
Minis-
ter has
accept-
e d
y o u r
words,
now leave the anger,
come together.” On the
other hand, the BJP is
now extending a hand
of friendship towards
Chaudhary Charan
Singh’s grandson Jay-
ant Chaudhary. BJP
strategists are trying
to convince Jayant that
RLD has never liked
the friendship with SP
or Congress. In 2014
and again in 2019 gen-
eral elections, RLD’s
bag remained com-
pletely empty by ally-
ing with these parties.
In 2017, they got to see
victory in only one as-
sembly seat by allying
with SP, whereas in
Atal’s era, when the
party contested 7
seats in alliance with
BJP in 2009, the party
won 5 seats out of
them. Jayant is cur-
rently trying to gauge
the mood of the public,
whether Jats have re-
ally forgiven BJP?
Apart from this, BJP
strategists have also
constantly attached
their strings to BSP su-
premo Mayawati, as
after the election re-
sults, if the BJP is left
behind by 15-16 seats
from the majority, then
Mayawati can fill this
shortcoming.
STRICT ORDERS
TO YOGI-CHOUHAN
In politics, only signs
decide the faces of
heroes and leaders.
Now let’s mention two
incidents here, the first
incident is from Mad-
hya Pradesh which oc-
curred on November
15, when PM Modi
reached Bhopal to inau-
gurate Gondrani Ka-
malapati railway sta-
tion. On this occa-
sion, MP CM
Shivraj Sin-
gh Chouhan was walk-
ing along with the PM,
simultaneously talking
to him before reaching
the inauguration site.
But suddenly the SPG
descended holding CM
Shivraj’s hands, he
was pulled back from
PM, who didn’t even
look back. Later Bhopal
Collector claimed that
the administration had
to send some very im-
portant message to the
CM, which was con-
veyed to him through
SPG. But this claim can
not easily be digested,
no matter what the Col-
lector keeps saying for
the face saving of his
CM. On the very next
day i.e. on November
16, a similar incident
happened with UP CM
Yogi Adityanath. It was
the momentous occa-
sion of the inaugura-
tion of Purvanchal Ex-
pressway. There were
people, there were cam-
eras installed every-
where, when the SPG
encircled the PM in
Yogi’s presence and
suddenly, the PM sat in
his car and went away.
The cameras captured
how CM Yogi followed
the PM’s car, with fast
steps. Anyway, after the
new ‘Nizam’ in Delhi,
there have been many
changes in the protocol
since 2014, such as the
PM will walk at the
forefront in the focus of
the cameras, alone, em-
broiled in the pride of
heroism. Rajnath Singh
also understood this on
the Rajpath on the Re-
public Day parade,
while walking with the
PM, when suddenly he
lagged behind. The PM
suddenly held him by
hand and pushed him
back. Mark Zuckerberg
at Facebook Headquar-
ters , could not under-
stand it, The same is
the protocol of PM’s
plane that only PM will
come out from the front
gate, while the rest will
exit through the plane’s
back door.

onfident to

passionate to
a huge ex-
tent, Shubhi
was one con-
tender of
First Miss India Teen
2021 who charmed
everyone with her
unmatched style and
a fierce desire to ace
every talent round.
Crowned as the first
runners up, Dhaneta,
with her modelling
aspirations, is
shooting for the
sky. Here’s Shubhi,
giving a sneak-peek
into her life.
Q: How did it feel to
wear the crown as one of
the finalists of First
Miss Teen India?
A: The very first thought
was ‘power comes with re-
sponsibility and I promise
to exercise it in the right
way.’ Second, the amount
of hard work and dedica-
tion I had put in to earn
this crown that finally
paid off.
Q: What was the most
challenging part of the
competition?
A: The whole journey was
incredible and full of
knowledge. The most
challenging part was
nervousness about - what
if I underperformed or
things don’t fall the way
they should or what if I
couldn’t give my 100%.
But, I still gave my all.
Q: How did homecoming
treat you?
A: My homecoming was
something I never imag-
ined even in dreams. I saw
my mom’s eyes full of
tears and my dad was sur-
prised and he was super
proud. All the family
members came to the air-
port and we had a great
celebration.
Q: How do you see your-
self in the future?
A: I see myself as a strong
individual who exudes
bravery and works for the
upliftment of women. I
see myself as a leader rep-
resenting our country on
International platforms
like miss world or miss
universe.
Q: What positive chang-
es can you bring forth
with this platform?
A: I wish to work for girls
who are dealing with self-
esteem issues as I have
myself dealt with PCOD.
But, I worked hard on my-
self and want women to
know that they are beauti-
ful just the way they are.
Q: Now that you are a
young star, what are
your academic goals?
A: I am doing BA as well
as cabin crew course be-
cause travelling gives me
thrill and I love exploring
new things.

TV IS NEVER BIASED TO ITS
VIEWERS, SUITABLE FOR
ALL AGE, SECT, SEX, ETC
ack in the year 1925,
John Logie Baird would
never have thought how
the meaning of Televi-
sion would change in
the coming era. It is true
that Baird is not the
only person who wanted to give
birth to the idea of presenting
images on a live screen so as to
watch somebody else’s life, story,
history, biography among others
on screen. But, Baird was the
first one who could execute this
idea. From transmitting still pic-
tures from radio waves to flat
and slim screens in which
we may experience the
world in HD, everything
has changed.
Most of the young gen-
eration have been aware
of the existence of TV
since they have been toddlers,
but when keeping in mind the
older generation, most of them
were not aware of its existence
till their teenage years.
Television soon gained its
popularity, as it became an easy
medium for entertainment,
watching the news and other up-
dates, a medium of creating
awareness about a new culture.
It gave everyone a space of
watching unseen footage from
around the world. One could just
sit in one place and keep them-
selves updated on what was hap-
pening at the other corner of the
world. Television was never bi-
ased to its viewers, it was and
perhaps will always be loved by
children, teenagers, young, old,
everyone. There’s no race or fa-
vouritism for TV
.
Something that has no life of
its own and yet has been able to
attract millions and trillions of
eyes. what was so special about
the idea of Television that kept
it emerging as well as expand-
ing since the past years. Per-
haps, we as humans have a
tendency to get bored quickly,
apart from being bored we
also like to be surprised. It
isn’t easy for each one of us to
move from one place to an-
other, but, Television solves
our purpose, it serves us multi-
ple things on one plate.
Among the five senses present
in a human body, the eyes have
are the most perceptive organ, it
isn’t just the eye that experienc-
es TV but also our ears because
they are equally involved while
watching TV
, but, anything that
we can see doubles our experi-
ence of being on the edge.
Therefore, the evolution rose
from being a box of antennas to
a big heavy machine which al-
most looked like a present-day
microwave, to flat-screen TVs to
now the latest smart TVs. Deriv-
and slim screens in which
we may experience the
world in HD, everything
of the existence of TV
since they have been toddlers,
but when keeping in mind the
older generation, most of them
ing its inspiration from the TV,
most of the things that we see
now involve a screen, first and
foremost the advertisement
screens, mobile phones, cinema
halls among others. We don’t
know how far this digital screen
will go but on this day but let’s
celebrate its existence today as
it has become a major part of
our lives and contributed in a
grand manner!

The number of busi- ness sessions and topics have increased signifi- cantly with focus on im- proving policing in ser- vice of people. Before 2014, delibera- tions largely focused on national security mat- ters only . Since 2014, these con- ferences have a twin fo- cus of national security as well as core policing issues, including pre- vention and detection of crime,communitypolic- ing, law and order, im- proving police-image, etc., a home ministry of- ficial said. Earlier, the confer- ence was Delhi-centric with officers coming to- gether only for the con- ference. Residing in the same premises over a period of 2-3 days has served to build height- ened sense of unity amongst officers of all cadres and organisa- tions since 2014. Direct interaction of top brass of police with the head of govern- ment has resulted in convergence of views on crucial challenges faced by the country and emergence of doa- ble recommendations, the official said. In the past few years, the topics are selected after detailed discus- sions with the highest echelons of the police service. Once selected, several interactions on presen- tations are held before committees of DGs in order to encourage par- ticipation and to incor- porate ideas from the field and from younger officers. As a result, all presen- tations are now broad- based, content-intensive and carry a set of co- gent, actionable recom- mendations. Since 2015, detailed follow-up of recommen- dations of past confer- ences is the norm and is the topic of the first businesssession,attend- edbytheprimeminister and the home minister. Recommendations are tracked closely by the conference secretar- iat, led by the Intelli- gence Bureau, with the help of nodal officers of the states. Decisions made in the past few conferenc- es led to significant policy changes leading to improvement of po- licing in the country, including setting high- er standards for effec- tive policing in rural and urban areas, and improved methods of modern policing, based on smart parameters. Dharmendra Pradhan @dpradhanbjp India outclass Kiwis, as Ashwin-Harshal Star in Ranchi! ften in sports when a tried-tested formula brings failures, it’s usually a good time to look for new beginnings. This is precisely what Team India have done to their T20 game - first by bringing in a new captain-coach duo, then backing Ashwin who was kept out of the shortest format for a few years in and now handing a debut to a wily speedster in Harshal Patel. The result -Team India bagging the bilateral series against New Zealand 2-0 with a game to go! In the past few matches, the Indian team has indicated clearly that they are willing to learn from their crucial errors in the just concluded World Cup and rebuild with fresh ideas. One of which is also the aggressive opening partnerships of Rohit Sharma and K.L.Rahul, who steered India to an easy win by 7 wickets with 16 balls remaining in their 2nd T20 match against the Kiwis. Rohit’s luck with tosses continued and he chose to bowl first in conditions laden with dew. Even before the match started, there was heavy dew on the ground which was glistening in the evening lights. It was expected to be a high scoring affair and the New Zealand innings started on a promising note. In the first powerplay, the Kiwis reached 64 for 1 and seemed set for a huge score. But the introduction of Ravi Ashwin changed the equation quickly . Bowling with guile and variations, he starved the Kiwis of runs in an enviable spell of 19 for 1 in his 4 overs. Ashwin has repaid the faith invested in him with superb per- formances since his comeback in T20s. After his return, Ashwin has bowled 71 deliveries to right handers conceding just 51 runs. Moreover, there are no boundaries hit off him by right-handed batters. The dynamics of the Indian side have changed dramati- cally through Ashwin’s skillful performances and his presence in White ball cricket now looks certain for a long period, especially since the next ODI World Cup is to be played in India in 2023. He was a part of the 2011 World Cup winning side and India will do well to keep him playing consistently . After the powerplay, Harshal Patel, who has faced the hard grind of First-Class cricket along with pressures of the IPL, shrugged aside the nerves of his first inter- national game. Using his slower ball effectively , he ended his incisive spell with 25 runs and 2 wick- ets–aneffortthatearned him the Player of the Match award. India’s im- pressive bowling show as a unit choked the Kiwi batters and they put up a paltry total of just 153. The Indian openers have been on a roll after the early losses in the T20 World Cup and on Friday evening their sizzling century stand eased India’s run chase. In the effort, Rohit-Rahul equalled the record for the most number of 100 run partnerships with Babar Azam and Mo- hammad Rizwan. While Rohit was slow to begin with, KL Rahul was at his aggressive best and ensured that the chase remained on course. He hit 2 sixes in his innings of 65 but his flat six over covers stunned the Kiwi skipper, Tim Southee, and brought fans to their feet. Later, Rohit joined the party and completed his fifty with 5 sixes. India stuttered for a couple of overs, but the openers had put the team in such a commanding position that even 3 quick wickets by Southee weren’t enough to stop India from romping home with 16 balls to spare. OnSunday ,Kolkatahoststhefinalmatchof theseriesandthough it may be a dead rubber, it is significant for both teams. While most expertsfeelitistimetobloodinnewplayersandexperiment,India shouldgivemoregametimetothesameteamasthenextT20match afterthisseriesisslatedforJanuaryinSouthAfrica.Bythen,Virat and the rest of the key players will be back. Also, most of the benched players of the current series may not even figure in the squad. In fact, it was excessive chopping and changing, when the team was doing well, that caused the 2019 ODI World Cup debacle where India was confused about its best combination. As for New Zealand, they would look to salvage a win and keep their pride intact. They have looked a jaded unit but would be keen toprovethattheyweretheworthyRunners-UpintherecentWorld Cup. Indian fans though will cheer for their team to crush the Kiwis and bag the current series convincingly with a 3-0 sweep. SIDDHAARTH MAHAN The writer is a prolific writer on sports and cinema who also works as an actor in the Hindi film industry O On Sunday, Kolkata hosts the final match of the series and though it may be a dead rubber, it is significant for both teams. While most experts feel it is time to blood in new players and experiment, India should give more game time to the same team THE TIME WHEN COLOUR OF SKIN MATTERED THE MOST! One day I decided to go to the market to buy a tooth brush, shaving cream and soap. All shops were owned by Indians. The other man was a black customer. It took me a moment to realize that he was Prime Minister Chona. We greeted each other. He had no security staff with him. As soon as the shopkeeper saw me he stopped serving the Prime Minister. I was appalled uring my long life I had the good fortune to meet and get to know a dozen or more African leaders who led the freedom struggle in their countries. South of the Sa- hara all countries are black. All except Ethiopia and Liberia, were colonies of Britain, France and Portugal. A minuscule minority of big- oted, rabidly racist whites ruled all the South Saharan countries. The blacks had no rights. Most did menial jobs. Ninety percent were illiterate. No elections at any level were held. Even Indi- ans did not mix with, “these ka- las” Blacks had to stand several yards away from Indian shops. Whatever they bought was flung at the blacks. I was High Commissioner of India to Zambia from September 1977 to April 1980. Zambia had attained independence in 1964. I had got to know President Ken- neth Kaunda in the summer of 1962. He appeared as a petitioner before the Decolonization Com- mittee of which I was Rappor- teur. One day I decided to go to the market to buy a tooth brush, shaving cream and soap. All shops were owned by Indians. The other man was a black cus- tomer. It took me a moment to realize that he was Prime Minis- ter Chona. We greeted each oth- er. He had no security staff with him. As soon as the shopkeeper saw me he stopped serving the Prime Minister. I was appalled. In Hindi I said to him, “Do you not know who he is. He is the Prime Minister of Zambia.” Re- sponse, “Muje pata hai. Par kala to hai.” I let him have it, asking the man to serve the PM first. I profusely apologised to Prime Minister. He smiled, put out his hand. Next day I sent for the shopkeeper. He promptly ar- rived at my official residence. I had one of my Indian guard with me. By this time the man was terrified. I told him I could have his shop closed for insulting the Prime Minister. “It is the likes of you that get India a bad name in African countries. Do not ever do what you did yesterday.” He promised with folded hands. In the autumn the committee took a tour of Morocco, Ethiopia and Tanzania, a year back it was still Tanganyika. In Morocco the Committee did not have much to do. One cannot but admire the wonderful climate and beauty of the country . We were received by the King in Rabat, the capital. I fell for Casablanca (Remember the film) and the fabulous and fantastic city of Marrakesh. Ihavewrittenaboutthismany years back. The story is so good that I am sharing it with a new generation of readers. From Morocco we flew to Ad- dis Ababa. The airport was not impressive. More goats than hu- man beings were to be seen. Our audience with His Imperial Maj- esty was scheduled for the next afternoon. The Ethiopian dele- gate in the committee, Kifle Wodajo, instructed us on the elaborate palace protocol. We arrived at the grand palace and were awestruck by the lions walking unconcerned in the vast palace grounds. The com- mittee members were taken to a large hall. No chairs. We stood, knowing not what to expect next. The Emperor, very short, sud- denly appeared, looking rather stiff in his military uniform. All Ethiopians present, including Kifle Wodajo, prostrated before him. His Imperial Majesty’s en- tourage included a Chihuahua who was shown due reverence by our hosts. We later discovered that the choice of the tiny canine was deliberate. Our committee came very low in the Ethiopian pecking order and did not merit a bigger canine presence. Before we filed past, His Imperial Maj- esty said a few words in Amhar- ic and wished our delegation well. Kifle Wodajo was last in the line. He crawled, lowered his head and walked backwards so as not to show his posterior to the King of Kings. The emperor had a gruesome- ly tragic end. He was dethroned by the army, and on 27 August 1975, was smothered to death with a wet pillow and buried be- neath a palace lavatory . Two of his granddaughters were imprisoned in a filthy dun- geon, and their heads shaved. This was on 11 September 1975. In October Winston Churchill Jr, MP and grandson of Sir Winston Churchill, met me at India House. He spoke of the terrible plight of the princesses and wondered if Prime Minister In- dira Gandhi could impress upon thearmyregimetoreleasethem. I informed the P.M. She did dis- creetly intervene on purely hu- manitarian grounds and they were allowed to leave Ethiopia. Both were released and flew to England. Most probably , it may on its own, without going through any formal pro- cess, choose an officer from 1990-1993 batch IAS. Even as this pro- cess is on, the search- cum-selection-Commit- tee(SCSC)issaidtohave completed the exercise torecommendnamesfor selection as Member-Fi- nance of NHAI. NHAI holds an impor- tant place in the NDA’s political calculation because the uninter- rupted and rapid con- struction of highways can be showcased as a demonstrable example of the administration’s accomplishment. Sources say that there are five shortlisted can- didates for Member-Fi- nance from a list of nine applicants. This critical post has been vacant for the last two years. NHAI consists of a full-time Chairman, and five full-time Mem- bers, and four part-time Members. Despite its achieve- ments on other fronts, NHAI has not been treated well in terms of the appointment of key personnel including its chairman. Like the post of Mem- ber-Finance, the Mem- ber (PPP) post has also been vacant for over two years though there was an attempt to fill it last year but was some- how SCSC process was stopped midway . The post of NHAI Chairman fell vacant after Sukhbir Singh Sandhu, a 1988 batch IAS, was repatriated to his parent cadre (Utta- rakhand) in the first week of July this year to become the state Chief Secretary . Unfortunately, it’s a harsh reality that NHAI is scheduled to get its eighth chairman in a span of barely six years since August 2015. Two of its chairmen N N Sinha and Sanjeev Ran- jan had terms only for 7 and 5 months . The frequent change of the chief of the high- way building and main- tenance organization has been a problem since 2006 barring three years during 2012-15 when R P Singh served a full term. Reportedly, he was the last chair- man to be selected through a search-cum- selection process. Insiders say that af- ter Singh, none of the Chairmen came through the SCSC route and this time also the Chairman is expected to be appointed by ACC directly very soon. Since NHAI deals with complicated issues relating to contracts and disputes officers, its senior officials need time to hone skills and acquire experience but in most cases, by the time their learning process reaches matu- rity, they are moved for one reason or the other leaving the mam- moth organization to face its fate. (Lohia) president Shivpal Yadav to enter into an alliance with Samajwadi Party or merge his party into it. Speaking to media, SP president Akhilesh Yadav said Uncle would be given full respect. However, so far no development from SP has been made officially as to when this “Sammaan” (respect) would be bestowed on uncle who has been waiting for two years. Speaking to the media once, Shivpal said that, “I have been seeking this (alliance with Samajwadi Party) for the last 2 years. It will be great if it happens.” Shivpal Yadav has repeatedly said that he was ready to merge his party into SP if his workers are honourably adjusted to the party. Following the policy of forgiving and forgetting, the elder Yadav has been acting soft on SP for quite sometime sending signals repeatedly to the nephew to settle the issue. During Diwali celebrations, when the Yadav family had assembled at Safai, Akhilesh said that he would enter into an alliance with his uncle’s party. With the 2022 UP assembly election fast approaching, Shivpal Yadav is eager to settle the issue so that future action plans could be chalked out. But Akhilesh while sewing up alliances with the other smaller parties has so far not taken a decision about PSP. Now all eyes are fixed on November 22 when the family would be together to celebrate the birthday of SP patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav to settle the issue between “Chacha- Bhatija”. —First India Bureau EMPLOYEES OF MUNICIPAL CORPORATION THEIR MULTIPLE PROXIES The officers are taking so many efforts to make Lucknow a smart city by making smart plans, but are not aware that their employees are taking everything for granted. After the failure of the Biometric and smartwatch used to mark the attendance of the employees in the Municipal Corporation, Nagar Nigam gave its work agency smart mobiles for marking attendance of employees. But cleaning workers for this too found a way out. They have to mark their attendance by turning on the software installed in their phones but the surprising thing is that one employee takes the phones of 4 person and turns on the location of all the devices and then the devices show that they all are on duty in their allotted area in the field. But, 50% of the staff is not even on the spot (real time). When the officers came to know about this, they got it investigated secretly and came to know that their employees were playing them and no staff was working on the spot in real time. The officers have now issued instructions to take action against the working organisations. And, now the question arises that what will be the next move of the municipal corporation in order to take the attendance to complete the smart city project. —Ahtesham Siddiqui SACK AJAY MISHRA: PRIYANKA TO PM JUSTICE FOR LAKHIMPUR VICTIMS First India Bureau Lucknow: The AICC general secretary Pri- yanka Gandhi today demanded immediate dismissal of minister of state for home Ajay Mishra Teni, whose son Ashish Mishra is a key accused in the Lakhimpur Khiri vio- lence on October 3 where four farmers were mowed down by the minister SUV. In- teracting with media persons in Lucknow on Saturday, Congress leader Gandhi read out the letter written to the PM. “Yesterday you repealed the three far laws while accept- ing that they were be- ing forced upon the farmers. I have read in the newspapers that you are in Lucknow today to attend the DGP conference and will meet with the top officials of the coun- try who are responsi- ble for maintaining law and order.” “The entire country saw the barbarity done with the farmers in Lakhimpur. You must be knowing that the main accused in this incident is the son of Union MoS Home in your government. Due to political pres- sure, the UP govern- ment has been trying to silence the voice for justice since begin- ning. Honourable Su- preme Court has also remarkedthatitseems that the government is trying to save a par- ticular accused in this case,” said Gandhi. It may be recalled that eight persons, in- cluding four farmers, had lost their lives in the Lakhimpur Kheri violence on October 3 after an SUV Thar had ploughed into a crowd of farmers protesting against MoS Ajay Mishra Teni and the visit of UP Deputy CM Keshav Maurya. After four farmers were mowed down, the vio- lence escalated and three BJP workers were lynched by the angry farmers while a local journalist also lost his life as he got caught in the violence. “Yesterday while ad- dressing the nation you had said you are repealing the laws in farmers’ interest with true intent and pure heart. If this is all true, thenyoushouldensure justice for the families of the deceased farm- ers in Lakhimpur. If you share the stage withhimthenitwillbe an insult to those 700 farmers as well who lost their lives during the farmers’ protest,” she added. Kanpur: A day after Prime Minister Naren- dra Modi announced the repealing of the three Central farm laws, Jamiat Ulema-e- Hind national president Maulana Arshad Mada- ni on Saturday said that the Citizenship (Amendment) Act should also be repealed otherwise the Muslim community will have to bear its brunt. While interacting with media here, Madani said, “It’s believed that Laws (Farm Laws) were re- pealed as polls are close. We think that (CAA- NRC) is concerned with nationality and Mus- lims will have to bear its brunt. Power of pub- lic strongest, so this (CAA) should also be repealed.” He congratu- lated the farmers who continued their protest, and said, “Similarly, we want the government to roll back the Act that is going to hurt Muslims. They too are citizens of India just like others. If they’re affected, the government should feel it in a similar manner.” Farmers have been pro- testing the Centre’s three farm laws since they were passed in 2020. Similarly, protests had erupted in parts of the country against the CAA. The CAA allows persecuted minorities belonging to the Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Buddhist, Parsi, and Christian communities from Pa- kistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan to avail of Indian citizenship. Ac- cording to the provi- sions of the act, people belonging to these com- munities who arrived in India till December 31, 2014, due to religious persecution in these three countries will not be treated as illegal mi- grants but will be pro- vided with Indian citi- zenship. —ANI Lucknow: The Cen- tre’s decision to repeal the three farm laws came after an intense agitation, but it is bet- ter late than never, and is welcomed, BSP chief Mayawati said on Sat- urday . However, the for- mer Uttar Pradesh chief minister said, there is doubt on the BJP government’s in- tention because this decision is being termed as that of “elec- toral selfishness and compulsion”. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday an- nounced repeal of the three agri laws which triggered a year of pro- tests by farmers and also apologised to the people over his govern- ment not being able to “convince” a section of farmers about the “truth” regarding the legislations’ benefits. The decision comes ahead of assembly polls in five states early next year, including Punjab and politically crucial Uttar Pradesh. The Ba- hujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief in a tweet in Hindi said, “The an- nouncement of repeal of the three controver- sial farm laws following an intense agitation is better late than never (der aaye durust aaye), and is welcomed.” “But there is doubt on the intention of the BJP government as this decision is termed as that of electoral selfish- ness and compulsion. She should at least ut- ter two words on the struggle of farmers in Congress-ruled states.” Siddharth ques- tioned Priyanka about how the ‘Corporate Congress’ has sudden- ly started worrying about the farmers. “For Priyanka, her husband Robert Vadra is the most hardwork- ing farmer, who does the tedious task of cheating the farmers by buying their land for pennies and mak- ing crores out of it,” he remarked. Muzaffarnagar: RLD chief Jayant Chaud- hary on Saturday called it a victory of farmers and urged them to con- tinue their protest till there is a legal guaran- tee for MSP. Chaudhary made the remarks at a rally in Baghra village which comes under Charthawal assembly constituency. The RLD chief welcomed the Centre’s decision and called it a victory of the farmers. “But the farm- ers’ agitation is not over yet. They should con- tinue their protest to get their remaining de- mands fulfilled,” he said. Attacking the Yogi government, Chaud- hary claimed that the dispensation has failed to fulfill its promises. At the same time, the opposi- tion camps, hoping to defeat the BJP on the ba- sis of farmers’ discon- tent, have also been forced to revise their strategy . In the 2017 assembly polls, the BJP won 109 of the 136 seats in western UP . Earlier, the BJP was focusing especially on those seats in the 16 dis- tricts of this region knownas‘Jatland’,where it was defeated. But after the resentment of the farmers arising out of the agricultural laws, the political-social equa- tions here had changed. Party strategists were unable to find any effec- tive formula to retain hold on the Jat commu- nity ,whichhadprovided unprecedented support to the BJP since 2014. The BJP think-tank was aware of the possi- ble loss due to the ongo- ing farmers’ agitation under the leadership of Rakesh Tikait. In many villages of western UP , local MPs and MLAs as well as BJP and RSS workerswereengagedto holdtalkswiththeGram Pradhans on agricultur- al issues. The feedback that was coming in had a clear mes- sage that there was resentment among the people against the govern- ment. Internal survey of BJP said the equations werenotinfavourof the party in districts includ- ing Muzaffarnagar, Baghpat, Bijnor, Meerut, Saharan- pur etc. After the Muzaffarnagar ri- ots of 2013, the deep rift between the JatandtheMuslimcom- munity had started bridging. BJP strate- gists also had a strong apprehension of a rever- sal in the Jat, Muslim and OBC equations due to the alliance of RLD and Samajwadi Party . Realising the difficulties of BJP arising out of public anger, RLD, SP , BSP and Congress had intensified their activi- tiesinthisarea.Political analyst Avinash Chan- dra Mishra says that af- ter the U-turn on the farm laws, the circum- stances are bound to change. Mayawati welcomed the announcement of withdrawal of agricul- tural laws after a strong agitation in the country as “late in the day”. But Mayawati also termed it as a decision of elec- toral selfishness and compulsion and said that the intention of the BJP government at the Centre is also being doubted. Therefore, some more concrete de- cisions need to be taken in this regard. With this, the war of words between the SP and the BJP intensified regarding the expressway. —FILE PHOTO Subroto Roy Television has changed the world ever since it’s inception, bringing the entire universe to an individual in his living room! —Jagdeesh Chandra, CEO Editor-in-Chief, First India WHY ARE FARMERS STILL NOT AGREEING? Sources reveal that the message to the nation on Friday was written weeks ago, when Captain Ama- rinder Singh had come to meet PM Modi and Amit Shah. The cap- tain’s only request to the PM and Shah was that ‘it is imperative to repeal all three agricul- tural laws, only then they can go among the voters of Punjab with revered saffron beliefs. That happened, but even after the PM’s an- nouncement, the farm- ers are still not agreea- ble, they are waiting for these laws to be re- pealed in the Par- liament, while they are still adamant on their old demand for statutory guarantee on MSP. But so much distrust on the words of the PM is not right, it is a step to challenge the dignity of an high con- stitutional post of the country . The question is also a serious one as to what will happen to the PM’s associate minister AjayMishraTeniwhose dismissal is demanded by the farmers? The farmers are still ada- mant on their old de- mands and in a little bit of exuberant enthusi- asm, they are aware of the fact that their firm intentions and indomi- table spirit has reward- ed them. But even for the BJP government, this delayed bet of PM Modi is not going to be easy. When the bill to repeal the three agri- cultural laws is brought in the House, the op- p o s i t i o n parties will create a lot of hue and cry over it, they will also raise the issue of the martyrdom of more than 700 agitators, who had to pay the price for the movement. Is the bill of the three agricul- tural laws also going to face the same fate as the Modi government’s ‘amended land acquisi- tion’ bill in 2014? which on one fine day in 2015, was suddenly declared by the PM in ‘Mann Ki Baat’ that the govern- ment will take it back. But will today in a changed scenario, will millions of broken hearts and shattered be- liefs be restored, includ- ing the pain of losing their loved ones? BJP’S UP POLL STARTEGY Right now it will take time to repeal all three agricultural laws, but BJP has start- ed working on the poli- tics of expansion. In Punjab, Captain A m a r i n d e r has come openly in BJP’s court, while in UP , the damage control campaign of the saffron party has also started in over one hundred seats under the influence of farm- ers. Most of these seats are from western UP, a region dominated by Jats. Anyway, Jats are among the traditional BJP voters from the be- ginning. Remember Amit Shah’s 40-minute leakedaudioclip, which claimed that Jat broth- ers are our own. On the one hand, now where the Jat leaders of BJP will go from village to village in western UP to persuade the angry Jats stress- ing that ‘Prime Minis- ter has accept- e d y o u r words, now leave the anger, come together.” On the other hand, the BJP is now extending a hand of friendship towards Chaudhary Charan Singh’s grandson Jay- ant Chaudhary. BJP strategists are trying to convince Jayant that RLD has never liked the friendship with SP or Congress. In 2014 and again in 2019 gen- eral elections, RLD’s bag remained com- pletely empty by ally- ing with these parties. In 2017, they got to see victory in only one as- sembly seat by allying with SP, whereas in Atal’s era, when the party contested 7 seats in alliance with BJP in 2009, the party won 5 seats out of them. Jayant is cur- rently trying to gauge the mood of the public, whether Jats have re- ally forgiven BJP? Apart from this, BJP strategists have also constantly attached their strings to BSP su- premo Mayawati, as after the election re- sults, if the BJP is left behind by 15-16 seats from the majority, then Mayawati can fill this shortcoming. STRICT ORDERS TO YOGI-CHOUHAN In politics, only signs decide the faces of heroes and leaders. Now let’s mention two incidents here, the first incident is from Mad- hya Pradesh which oc- curred on November 15, when PM Modi reached Bhopal to inau- gurate Gondrani Ka- malapati railway sta- tion. On this occa- sion, MP CM Shivraj Sin- gh Chouhan was walk- ing along with the PM, simultaneously talking to him before reaching the inauguration site. But suddenly the SPG descended holding CM Shivraj’s hands, he was pulled back from PM, who didn’t even look back. Later Bhopal Collector claimed that the administration had to send some very im- portant message to the CM, which was con- veyed to him through SPG. But this claim can not easily be digested, no matter what the Col- lector keeps saying for the face saving of his CM. On the very next day i.e. on November 16, a similar incident happened with UP CM Yogi Adityanath. It was the momentous occa- sion of the inaugura- tion of Purvanchal Ex- pressway. There were people, there were cam- eras installed every- where, when the SPG encircled the PM in Yogi’s presence and suddenly, the PM sat in his car and went away. The cameras captured how CM Yogi followed the PM’s car, with fast steps. Anyway, after the new ‘Nizam’ in Delhi, there have been many changes in the protocol since 2014, such as the PM will walk at the forefront in the focus of the cameras, alone, em- broiled in the pride of heroism. Rajnath Singh also understood this on the Rajpath on the Re- public Day parade, while walking with the PM, when suddenly he lagged behind. The PM suddenly held him by hand and pushed him back. Mark Zuckerberg at Facebook Headquar- ters , could not under- stand it, The same is the protocol of PM’s plane that only PM will come out from the front gate, while the rest will exit through the plane’s back door. It is true that Baird is not the only person who wanted to give birth to the idea of presenting images on a live screen so as to watch somebody else’s life, story, history, biography among others on screen. But, Baird was the first one who could execute this idea. From transmitting still pic- tures from radio waves to flat and slim screens in which we may experience the world in HD, everything has changed. Most of the young gen- eration have been aware of the existence of TV since they have been toddlers, but when keeping in mind the older generation, most of them were not aware of its existence till their teenage years. Television soon gained its popularity, as it became an easy medium for entertainment, watching the news and other up- dates, a medium of creating awareness about a new culture. It gave everyone a space of watching unseen footage from around the world. One could just sit in one place and keep them- selves updated on what was hap- pening at the other corner of the world. Television was never bi- ased to its viewers, it was and perhaps will always be loved by children, teenagers, young, old, everyone. There’s no race or fa- vouritism for TV .
