BLISSFUL
TIME
AFTER BULLDOZING HOME OF VIOLENCE ‘MASTERMIND’
37 MORE TO FACE ACTION
TREATING ACCUSED
AS CONVICTS IS
UNLAWFUL: AIMPLB
The All India Muslim Per-
sonal Law Board (AIMPLB)
has said that treating ac-
cused as convicts was not
only unlawful but also a way
of creating terror and panic.
In a statement, the Board
cited visuals on social media
to highlight alleged police
excesses on individuals
detained on allegations of
stone-pelting and violence.
The board also appealed to
the members of the Muslim
community to “exercise
restraint and limit their
protests to handing over
of memorandums to local
authorities seeking action
against those who have
insulted the Prophet to ex-
press their disapproval and
resentment if any, against
such acts.” The board also
demanded that the police
first investigate cases of vio-
lence, submit their findings
before the court and seek
directions to initiate action
against the accused.
First India Bureau
Lucknow: An uneasy calm prevailed in bulldozer-hit are-
as of several districts, as the police continued crackdown
on people who had resorted to violence during June 10
protests. Security has further been tightened all over the
state to avoid any trouble on next Friday. AIMPLB has ap-
pealed to the community to exercise restraint and handed
over a memorandum to authorities seeking action
against those who had insulted the Prophet. Referring
to use of bulldozers the board said treating accused as
convicts was unlawful. In Atala locality of Prayagraj,
where house of one of the accused Javed Ahmad, was
bulldozed on June 12, shopkeepers downed the shutters
out of fear. People in the neighbouring Muslim domi-
nated areas of Noorullah Road and Kareli also closed
their business establishments. While putting up posters
of suspects in Sahranpur, Prayagraj, Ferozabad, Hathras,
Aligarh, Ambedkarnagar, Moradabad and other places to
identify the people responsible for violence on June 10,
ban order have been issued in Bijnor and Amroha after
an appeal by Barielly-based political party Ittehad-e-Millat
Council headed by Maulana Tauqeer Raza Khan asking
Muslim women, children to assemble at Barielly Islamia
ground to protest against Nupur Sharma’s remarks. The
high alert has been sounded in Barielly police zone.

A certificate dated
January 28 issued by
Prayagraj Nagar Nigam
shows that House No.
39C/2A/1 is in the name
of Parveen Fatima and
the house tax for finan-
cial year 2020-2021 has
been paid. And yet, the
Prayagraj administration
demolished the house
on Sunday after serving
just a day’s notice,
stating that construction
was done in violation of
provisions of the Uttar
Pradesh Urban Planning
and Development Act,
1973. The notice, with
the house number listed,
was not addressed to
Parveen Fatima but to
her husband Moham-
mad Javed. Javed and
Fatima’s younger daugh-
ter Sumaiya Fatima said:
“The PDA (Prayagraj

my mother’s residence.
The house was owned
by my mother Parveen
Fatima’s father Kalee-
muddin Siddiqui. He
gifted it to my mother
over two decades ago.
Initially, we built the
ground floor and later
two more floors.”

table subversion of the

Lucknow: A reprieve from the excruciating heat is
expected after June 15 as the maximum and mini-
mum temperatures will drop after some parts of UP
experience pre-monsoon rain, a Met official said. The
Met department has not issued any further warning
of a heat wave. The southwest monsoon is likely to
advance over some more parts of East and Central
India and some parts of Uttar Pradesh between June
16 and 23, according to the IMD bulletin. Last year,
the southwest monsoon reached UP by June 5 and
had covered all parts of the state by June 14.

IN-DEPTH
A BOLD NEW PLAN
TO KEEP THE ARMED
FORCES FIGHTING
FIT AND YOUNGER
he new Agnipath re-
cruitment scheme
for the Army, Air
Force and the Navy
which was unveiled
Tuesday, does hold promise to
radically transform the forces
with the infusion of fresh blood
every four years. At the end of
four years a significant percent
of the troops will get a chance to
be retained for a longer period.
These soldiers will be called Ag-
niveers. The scheme offers at-
tractive incentives for the youth
and at the same time drastically
reduces the defence budget as
the recruits will not be eligible
for pension. The scheme will be
different from the Short Service
Commission which is meant for
recruiting only officers.
Some objections to the scheme
stem from the short service pe-
riod which may not be enough
for the assimilation of Agniveer
in the larger set-up, a major re-
quirement in the armed forces.
Some retired officers chose to
call them “tourist soldiers”
whose mind may be preoccupied
with life after four years, affect-
ing operational ethos.

ormer judges of

Court and high
courts have writ-
ten a letter to the
Chief Justice of India NV Ra-
mana requesting him to take
suo motu cognizance of the
bulldozer justice being meted
out to protesters in Kanpur
and Prayagraj. Such letters
have lost their significance in
the prevailing scenario of
deep-seated biases, whether
political or communal.
To recall, in April a num-
ber of former bureaucrats
had written a letter to Prime
Minister Narendra Modi
drawing his attention to the
“politics of hate”. The PM did
not have to respond to that
letter as an equal number of
former bureaucrats, judges
and generals came together
to defend the Modi govern-
ment and questioned the mo-
tives of signatories to the let-
ter. The list of those defend-
ing the Central government
included eight judges.
This time around there
may be former judges of the
Supreme Court and high
courts who would probably
agree with the new system of
justice to silence the minori-
ties and curb democratic pro-
tests. If they also decide to
write to the CJI those in ur-
gent need of justice will have
to wait for delayed justice.
Provided they are left with
the means and the courage to
take on the system.
The letter has requested
for “suo motu cognizance”
which the courts could have
taken without being remind-
ed of it.
How would these judges
have reacted to a similar situ-
ation while they were in of-
fice? Probably, they would
have flowed with the tide.
Some of the innocent victims
must be wondering who will
protect their rights if the
courts don’t.

F
RS POLL RESULTS WILL
BOOST NDA PROSPECTS
‘PREZ’ WORTHY WIN
olitics is a game of strange
bedfellows. In rajneeti, it’s
not over till it’s over. The Saf-
fron party’s strength in
(state) assemblies suggested
that the party could retain
only 20 of the 24 Rajya Sabha
seats it held in the biennial
polls for 57 seats but as the
(electoral) process got over
and on Saturday it was real-
ised that the BJP finally won
22 and also ensured victory
of an Independent, underlin-
ing its masterstroke, pull
among unaffiliated legisla-
tors and disaffected lawmak-
ers obviously in the Opposi-
tion camp.
As it is said in cricket that
the match is not over till the
last ball is bowled, the BJP’s
better-than-expected show is
a boost to the ruling National
Democratic Alliance ahead
of the President’s poll, and is
an obvious blow to its rivals,
as the Rajya Sabha elections
have again highlighted dis-
sension and lack of cohesion
among the Opposition ranks.
The BJP’s ambitious ef-
forts to force a contest in
these states besides Ra-
jasthan by backing Independ-
ents or putting its own candi-
dates to benefit from division
in the ranks of its rivals have
paid dividends as it bagged
one extra seat each in all
states barring Rajasthan.
Astute politician and Con-
gress veteran and Rajasthan
Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot
not only managed to keep his
flock of its supporting MLAs
together but also embar-
rassed the BJP by wooing
over one of its MLAs to foil
the saffron party’s efforts to
get an independent, outgoing
MP and media baron Sub-
hash Chandra, elected.
BJP is obviously happy
with the outcome, especially
in Maharashtra where the
ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi
coalition of the Shiv Sena,
the NCP and the Congress
suffered a setback despite be-
ing at the helm of power with
the BJP bagging three of the
six seats at stake!
It is also a boost to BJP
leader and former chief min-
ister Devendra Fadnavis,
who has had his share of set-
backs since losing power in
the state as he who outsmart-
ed and checkmated the Shiv
Sena.
BJP also bagged three of
the four seats in Karnataka
as its rivals the Congress and
the JD(S) could not come to a
pact and fought separately
and thus lost.
Congress veteran Bhupin-
der Singh Hooda suffered a
blow as the party’s nominee
Ajay Maken lost, with one of
its MLAs, Kuldeep Bishnoi,
voting for the BJP-backed
independent Kartikeya
Sharma, also a media entre-
preneur, and the vote of an-
other MLA turning out to be
invalid.
LOSS OF FACE
FOR HOODA
Hooda failed in his first test
after getting complete con-
trol of the party after the re-
centoverhaulingof Congress
but also in ensuring that all
legislators’ votes were cast
properly; while the cross-
voting by Kuldeep Bishnoi, a
known Hooda detractor, was
a clear writing on the wall,
another Congress vote was
also found to be invalid that
led to Maken’s defeat.
THE BISHNOI FACTOR
Even as the visibly annoyed
Congress high command has
expelled Bishnoi from all the
party posts for his cross-vot-
ing and now if he pulls the
plug on the party… it would
not only dent the Grand Old
Party’s non-Jat vote-bank in
Haryana but also make
things hugely difficult for
Hooda within the party
. Bish-
noi, a four-time MLA and
two-time MP, is younger son
of former Congress chief
minister late Bhajan Lal who
is till date the tallest non-Jat
leader of the state who was
Haryana CM for three times
and also Union minister.
Ahead of the presidential
poll, which is scheduled for
July 18 if more than one per-
son is in fray
, the Rajya Sabha
results are a morale booster
to the ruling combine.
In an electoral college of
around 10.86 lakh votes, the
BJP-led alliance is estimated
to have more than 48 per cent
of votes and is hopeful that
non-aligned regional parties
like YSR Congress and the
BJD will now support it.
MAMATA’S FRESH BID
Meanwhile, TMC chief
Mamata Banerjee has invited
leaders of 19 political parties
on June 15 to discuss the up-
coming presidential election.
Mamata said the election
gives the “perfect opportuni-
ty for all progressive opposi-
tion parties” to discuss the
future course of Indian poli-
tics. “At a time when our de-
mocracy is going through
troubling times, I believe that
a fruitful confluence of oppo-
sition voices is the need of
the hour,” she added.
Banerjee addressed the let-
ter to Congress chief Sonia
Gandhi, Shiv Sena’s Uddhav
Thackeray, Aam Aadmi Par-
ty’s Arvind Kejriwal and
Bhagwant Mann and Com-
munist Party of India (Marx-
ist) leader Pinarayi Vijayan.
Her attempt is seen as a
move to expand TMC’s na-
tional footprint after the par-
ty’s massive win in the cru-
cial 2021 Assembly elections.

INDIA IS ETERNAL AS IT IS LAND OF SAINTS:PM MODI
Pune (ANI): High-
lighting country’s cul-
tural heritage, Prime
Minister Narendra
Modi on Tuesday said
India is eternal as it is
the land of saints.
PM on Tuesday inau-
gurated Jagatguru
Shrisant Tukaram Ma-
haraj Temple in Dehu,
Pune. “We are proud to
be one of the oldest liv-
ing civilizations in
world. If the credit for
this goes to anyone, it
is to the saint tradition
and the sages of India.
India is eternal be-
cause it is the land of
saints. In every era,
some great soul has
been descending to
give direction to our
country and society.
Today the nation is cel-
ebrating the birth an-
niversary of Sant Ka-
birdas,” PM Modi said
during his address on
the occasion.
He said Dehu’s Shila
Mandir is not only a
centre of power of de-
votion but also paves
the way for the cultural
future of India.
PM Modi further
said, “Saints like Tu-
karam played a very
important role in the
life of a national hero
like Chhatrapati Shiva-
ji Maharaj. When Veer
Savarkarwaspunished
in the freedom strug-
gle, he used to sing the
abhang of Tukaram
while playing hand-
cuffs like chipli in jail.”
He called for carry-
ing forward the cultur-
al heritage of India.
“To strengthen our
national unity, today it
is our responsibility to
keep our ancient iden-
tity and traditions
alive. Therefore, today
when modern technol-
ogy and infrastructure
are becoming synony-
mous with India’s de-
velopment, we are
making sure that both
development and herit-

gether,” added the
Prime Minister.
Sant Tukaram was a

famously known for

poetry and communi-

through spiritual
songs known as Kir-

New Delhi: TheBJPhas
authorized party nation-
al president JP Nadda
and Defense Minister Ra-
jnath Singh to hold talks
withalliesandopposition
parties ahead of the pres-
idential election which is
kind of a formality. Be-
fore the election for the
highest constitutional
post, it is the responsibil-
ity of the ruling party to
talk to all the parties and
try to build a consensus.
However,inthehistoryof
independent India, there
has never been a consen-
sus in the election of the
President except at one
point. Every time the
election is hotly contest-
ed and this time also the
same will be repeated be-
cause Cong and other op-
positionpartieshavealso
started their prepara-
tions. Therefore, it is cer-
tain that no consensus
will be reached with the
opposition.
Asfarasalliesarecon-
cerned, there is only a
formality to make them
agree. The position of
any BJP ally is not such
that they would question
the candidate chosen by
it. The allies will neces-
sarily agree with who-
ever BJP fields. Anyway
,
most of the allies of the
BJP have left and the few
parties that are left also
do not have many votes.
The BJP has 42 per cent
of the votes in the Elec-
toral College that elects
the President and its al-
lies have six per cent of
the total votes. These six
per cent votes are con-
firmed. Before that, once
both the leaders of BJP
have to talk to the allies.
Anyway, there is good-
will of all the allies and
opposition parties to-
wardsRajnathSinghand
it is believed that he will
easily negotiate with all
theparties.Notably
,even
after adding six per cent
votes of BJP allies with
the saffron party’s 42,
thereisashortfallof two
percentorabout20thou-

BJP has the support of
Biju Janata Dal and YSR

Two unidentified miscreants on

Additional Deputy Commissioner

shop is located in the prominent

place around 1 pm. 2 men had
entered the shop as customers.
They bought a silver pendant
(worth Rs 300) from the shop
and then asked its owner to show
them some gold jewellery,” Singh
said. “It was during this time that
one of the accused sneaked gold
jewellery inside his clothes and
left the shop immediately while
his associate kept the shopper
engaged in conversation, he
added. Soon, on the pretext of
looking where his partner had
gone, the other accused also left
the shop. Soon the shopkeeper
realised that a gold item weighing
380 gm was missing and rushed
outside the shop in a bid to find
the duo, the officer said. —PTI

Cautioning against river linking,

As per experts, there can be also

related impact by these river projects
The govt has embarked on an
ambitious project to link Ken

New Delhi (PTI): In-
terlinking of rivers may
have far-reaching ad-
verse impact on mon-
soon cycles and biodi-
versity and pose so-
cio-economic challeng-
es, several experts have
said, as the government
embarks on an ambi-
tious project to link the
Ken and Betwa rivers to
tackle water crisis in
the parched Bun-
delkhand region.
The Ken-Betwa
scheme, the first being
implemented under the
National River Linking
Project (NRLP), seeks to
bring nearly 11 lakh
hectares of land under
irrigation in the
parched Bundelkhand
region straddling Uttar
Pradesh and Madhya
Pradesh. The NRLP pro-
poses transfer of water
from water-surplus ba-
sins where there is
flooding to water-deficit
basins where there is
drought and scarcity
through inter-basin wa-
ter transfer projects.
Cautioning against riv-
er linking projects, the
experts said these can
lead to disturbance of
very complex nature cy-
cles that can have
far-reaching adverse
impact on monsoon cy-
cles, biodiversity and
socio-economic issues.
Manoj Misra, conve-
nor of Yamuna Jiye
Abhiyan, a collective
fighting to preserve the
Yamuna river and its
floodplains, said the
long-term adverse im-
pacts of the river-link-
ing projects cannot be
visualised as they would
be very far reaching.
“For example, in
Ken-Betwa, their ori-
gins are very different.
Ken has a very unique
fish which has medici-
nal value and it is very
specific to Ken and that
is not found in Betwa
currently
. If Ken’s water
is diverted to Betwa
then fish and other bio-
diversity will also move
and when it moves then
you do not know what
impact it will have on
the local fish, he told
PTI. He said river-link-
ing projects can also
lead to adverse impacts
on the monsoon cycle.

many officers have been
trying to get posting un-
der Central deputation.
At present 1996 batch
IAS officers of the state
cadre are posted as Prin-
cipalSecretaries,butthe
number of such officers
have been dwindling ac-
cording to a First India
survey
.
As per the statistics,
there are 7 IAS officers
of batch 1996 from UP
cadre of which 4 are al-
ready posted outside the
state and one officer will
soon move to Delhi on
deputation. The rest two
officers are Anil Garg,
Principal Secretary Irri-
gation and Subhash
Chandra Sharma, Prin-
cipal Secretary Techni-
cal Education.
Dheeraj Sahu, who
among the IAS officers’
of 1996 batch was the

down to stay in the state
and declined to go on

his intent on being sent
on deputation. Subhash

cal Faimly Welfare
Department, New Delhi.
According to sources,
the officers in earlier
batch were less in num-
ber and if some officers
went on central deputa-
tion, the state would feel
empty
. Of the 7 officers
of 1996 batch IAS offi-
cers, all the 4 officers
posted outside the state
have been done so rules
of DoPT and on their
own free will. The state
will soon be getting a big
batchof IASofficersand
when these officers at-
tain seniority status, the
current problem of
shortage of senior IAS
officers at Principal Sec-
retary post will not
arise. The current sce-
nario is the reason why
many senior IAS offi-
cers have the charge of
many departments.

BJP to strengthen

Lucknow: Beneficia-
ries of various govern-
ment welfare schemes
and booth manage-
ment were the key fac-
tors behind the BJP’s
success in the UP as-
sembly polls. Now, fo-
cusing on the upcom-
ing Lok Sabha elec-
tions, BJP strategists
are working on the
blueprint to further
strengthen these key
aspects.
A fortnight-long na-
tionwide outreach
drive was launched
from May 30 to June 15
to mark the comple-
tion of eight years of
the Modi government
at the Centre, in a bid
to connect with work-
ers and beneficiaries
of Central government
schemes, and now the
party is going to kick-
start a campaign to
strengthen the organi-
sation at the booth
level.
There are many
booths in the state
where the party has
been getting fewer
votes, even as there are
some booths from
where the party has no
hope of victory. Out of
the total 1.75 lakh
booths in the state, the
party has identified
twenty-five thousand
on which BJP candi-
dates have never been
able to get an edge.
The party’s massive
network of 2.5 crore
workers has been in-
structed to increase
activism at their re-
spective booths. Po-
litical observers say
that BJP is getting the
benefit of being a cad-
re based party. The
strength of the
organization up to the
booth level gives the
party an edge over the
opposition.
Lucknow (PTI): Bahu-
jan Samaj Party chief
Mayawati on Tuesday
questioned the an-
nouncement by the
Centre to recruit 10
lakh people in the next
one-and-half years and
asked whether it is not
an “election mirage”.
The former Uttar
Pradesh chief minister
claimed that far more
posts reserved for the
Scheduled Castes,
Scheduled Tribes and
Other Backward Class-
es are lying vacant for
years.
“Due to wrong poli-
cies and working style
of the Centre, poverty,
inflation, unemploy-
ment and devaluation
of the Rupee are at an
all-time high.
“Because of this all
(people) are feeling
worried and restless.
Now, the Centre in the
next one-and-half
years, before the Lok
Sabha election, has an-
nounced 10 lakh re-
cruitments. Is it not an
election mirage (ch-
halavaa)?” Mayawati
said in a series of
tweets in Hindi.
Her reaction came
after Prime Minister
Narendra Modi asked
various government
departments and min-
istries to undertake the
recruitment of 10 lakh
people on a “mission
mode” in the next 18
months.
“The posts in the gov-
ernment meant for the
SCs, STs and OBCs ly-
ing vacant for years are
much more,” she said.
“The BSP has been de-
manding both inside
and outside Parliament-
that these vacancies be
filled by running a spe-
cial drive. The govern-
ment is silent about it
and this section of the
society is affected the
most by poverty and un-
employment,” she said.

ELECTION BOOTH
DIVIDED IN THREE
CATEGORIES
BJP has categorised
election booths into A,
B and C categories. The
weakest booths are in
category C. Between
June 15 and June 30,
party office bearers will
take stock of the weak
booths. A report will be
prepared after assess-
ing the shortcomings,
on the basis of which
special efforts will be
made. The responsi-
bility of strengthening
such troubled booths
has been entrusted with
the concerned MPs,
MLAs and ministers.
According to BJP
spokesperson Hero

the target of Mission
75 Plus in UP for the
upcoming LS elections,
and is now going to
give special attention
to booths on which the
party’s performance in
the last elections was
not up to the mark.

studentof mine
recently came
tomeandasked
me to suggest a
poem that she
could recite at
her school’s Po-
etry Recitation Competi-
tion. I intuitively gravi-
tated to one of my favour-
ite poems titled Human
Family by Maya Angelou.
Foryourreference,I’dlike
to share that poem here
before I continue:
I note the obvious dif-
ferences
in the human family.
Some of us are serious,
some thrive on comedy.
Some declare their lives
are lived
as true profundity,
and others claim they
really live
the real reality.
The variety of our skin
tones
can confuse, bemuse,
delight,
brown and pink and
beige and purple,
tan and blue and white.
I’ve sailed upon the
seven seas
and stopped in every
land,
I’ve seen the wonders
of the world
not yet one common
man.
I know ten thousand
women
called Jane and Mary
Jane,
but I’ve not seen any
two
who really were the
same.
Mirror twins are differ-
ent
although their features
jibe,
and lovers think quite
different thoughts
while lying side by side.
We love and lose in
China,
we weep on England’s
moors,
and laugh and moan in
Guinea,
and thrive on Spanish
shores.
We seek success in Fin-
land,
are born and die in
Maine.
In minor ways we differ
,
inmajor
,we’rethesame.
I note the obvious dif-
ferences
between each sort and
type,
but we are more alike,
my friends,
than we are unalike.
We are more alike, my
friends,
than we are unalike.
We are more alike, my
friends,
than we are unalike.
The reason I thought
of sharing this specific
poem in this article is
that as we inch closer to
another landmark year
of our country’s inde-
pendence; it is the es-
sence of this poem that is
the core thought I’d like
to leave you with as we
ponder our decades of
glorious Independence.
India, our great nation,
draws immense pride
from our ethos of inclu-
sion, of our diversity,
and our multi-cultural,
multi-racial, multi-eth-
nic past and present.
However, some would
contend that this great
and beautiful diversity
is being undermined in
present-day India. That
is how we once were, di-
vided based on narrow-
mindedness and myopic
outlooks, we are, again
today! And that to me,
really puts a serious
question mark on the
entire notion of free-
dom, of true, essential,
liberty. Today freedom
means different things
to different people. Sure.
But are we not, in this
digitized, connected,
hyper-tech world, re-
gressing if we begin to
colour our outlook, be-
haviour, opinions and
decisions with the col-
our and origin of skin?
Is this the independent
country we want to live
in, one that is divided,
compartmentalized, in
mind and boundary?
What kind of a country
are we leaving for our
children? We want and
encourage kids to read
the newspaper; what
they read each day in
the papers are hate sto-
ries, communal vio-
lence, and religious un-
rest! Is that not a crying
shame? And is that not
also a huge black blot on
the notion of free India?
Hope rests now with
the young generation. I
notice through my inter-
actions with thousands
of students; that young
children are innocent,
instinctively inclusive,
fair, just, and inherently
equalist. Neither do
they differentiate based
on status, nor class or
religion. They are pure.
It is this purity and plu-
rality that we as parents,
educators and caregiv-
ers must do our utmost
to preserve and protect.
That our own biases
should not reach and in-
fluence these young
minds. We must set ex-
amples for these chil-
dren to follow and lead
with. Simple things
around the house, such
as treating staff with
care and sensitivity and
celebrating all festivals,
no matter their origin.
These kinds of acts will
be imbibed by children
as their natural and or-
ganic way of being and
shape their already in-
clusive beliefs into a life-
long, accepting ethos.
I leave you, therefore,
in this article with a sim-
ple message. Celebrate
freedom but be truly
free. Exalt liberty but
only if you understand
true liberty. And accept
your independence, only
if you are willing, to be,
independent in your
thinking. Bestow upon
our children, the gift of
true Independence and
acceptance.

Prayagraj (PTI): After the demolishing the house of the alleged mastermind of last Fri- day’s violence here, au- thorities are now going over a list of 37 other accused for possibly similar action. An official said Prayagraj Development Authority (PDA) is try- ingtoidentifythehomes of the 37 people and ac- tionaccordingtothelaw will be taken if their building plans have not been approved. Violence broke out in Prayagraj and some oth- er cities on Friday over remarks on Prophet Mo- hammad by now-sus- pended BJP spokesper- son Nupur Sharma. On Sunday, the PDA bulldozed the house of Javed Ahmad, main ac- cused in the violence during which mobs hurled stones, some bikes and carts were set onfireandacopinjured. Prayagraj SSP Ajay Kumar earlier said two country-made pistols and several live car- tridges were recovered from the house during a search. The demolition, a part of a series of simi- lar actions by UP Police in other places, was crit- icised by opposition par- ties and legal experts. But other accused could face similar ac- tion in Prayagraj. PDA zonal officer Ajay Kumar said the au- thority has got a list of others allegedly in- volved in stone-pelting. “The PDA is search- ing the addresses of 37 accused. However, most have locked their homes and fled. Due to this, there is a difficulty in finding their exact hous- es,” he said. The incident took place at Parshuram Ghat under the Vindhyachal police station area, they said. A family of 11 people from Ambed- karnagar district was visiting the Vindhyachal temple here. Three members of the group, Shakti Yadav (16), Aman (17) and Vaibhav Yadav (16), got into the river for bathing and drowned, Addi- tional Superintendent of Police (City) Sanjay Kumar Verma said. MAN HELD FOR OBJECTIONABLE POST ON PROPHET Ballia: A 25-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly uploading an objection- able post on Prophet Mohammad on social media, a police official said. Bajrang Rajput, of Kureji village in Rasra area, allegedly uploaded the post on Instagram on Sunday, Rasra Circle Officer SN Vaish said. The matter came into light after a person in a tweet urged the police to take action against the accused, Vaish said. Taking cognisance of the com- plaint, police registered a case against Rajput and arrested him. In a statement, the Board cited visuals on social media to highlight alleged police excesses on individuals detained on allegations of stone-pelting and violence. The board also appealed to the members of the Muslim community to “exercise restraint and limit their protests to handing over of memorandums to local authorities seeking action against those who have insulted the Prophet to ex- press their disapproval and resentment if any, against such acts.” The board also demanded that the police first investigate cases of vio- lence, submit their findings before the court and seek directions to initiate action against the accused. First India Bureau Lucknow: An uneasy calm prevailed in bulldozer-hit are- as of several districts, as the police continued crackdown on people who had resorted to violence during June 10 protests. Security has further been tightened all over the state to avoid any trouble on next Friday. AIMPLB has ap- pealed to the community to exercise restraint and handed over a memorandum to authorities seeking action against those who had insulted the Prophet. Referring to use of bulldozers the board said treating accused as convicts was unlawful. In Atala locality of Prayagraj, where house of one of the accused Javed Ahmad, was bulldozed on June 12, shopkeepers downed the shutters out of fear. People in the neighbouring Muslim domi- nated areas of Noorullah Road and Kareli also closed their business establishments. While putting up posters of suspects in Sahranpur, Prayagraj, Ferozabad, Hathras, Aligarh, Ambedkarnagar, Moradabad and other places to identify the people responsible for violence on June 10, ban order have been issued in Bijnor and Amroha after an appeal by Barielly-based political party Ittehad-e-Millat Council headed by Maulana Tauqeer Raza Khan asking Muslim women, children to assemble at Barielly Islamia ground to protest against Nupur Sharma’s remarks. The high alert has been sounded in Barielly police zone. Prayagraj: A receipt issued by Jal Kal Vibhag, Prayagraj, dated February 8, shows that Parveen Fatima, wife of Javed Mohammad, paid a water bill of Rs 4,578. A certificate dated January 28 issued by Prayagraj Nagar Nigam shows that House No. 39C/2A/1 is in the name of Parveen Fatima and the house tax for finan- cial year 2020-2021 has been paid. And yet, the Prayagraj administration demolished the house on Sunday after serving just a day’s notice, stating that construction was done in violation of provisions of the Uttar Pradesh Urban Planning and Development Act, 1973. The notice, with the house number listed, was not addressed to Parveen Fatima but to her husband Moham- mad Javed. Javed and Fatima’s younger daugh- ter Sumaiya Fatima said: “The PDA (Prayagraj Development Authority) issued a notice to my father and demolished my mother’s residence. The house was owned by my mother Parveen Fatima’s father Kalee- muddin Siddiqui. He gifted it to my mother over two decades ago. Initially, we built the ground floor and later two more floors.” FROM PG1… Mettle of judiciary... protestors being demol- ished without notice. “Such a brutal clamp- down by a ruling admin- istration is an unaccep- table subversion of the rule of law and a viola- tion of the rights of citi- zens, and makes a mock- ery of the Constitution and fundamental rights guaranteed by the State. The coordinated man- ner in which the police and development au- thorities have acted lead to the clear conclusion that demolitions are a form of collective extra judicial punishment, at- tributable to a state pol- icy which is illegal,” the petition says. The letter says that the “mettle of the judici- ary is tested in such critical times”. “The request by the former judiciary heads is that in the same spir- it, as the custodian of the Constitution, the SC should take immedi- ate action and give or- der for improvement of deteriorating law and order situation in UP, specifically involving the high-handedness of the police and state au- thorities, and the bru- tal clampdown on the fundamental rights of citizens...” the petition says. PM @narendramodi ji has announced the ‘Agnipath’ scheme allowing our youth to serve in the military forces for a certain duration. SPIRITUAL SPEAK Perform your obligatory duty, because action is indeed better than inaction. —Bhagavad Gita IN-DEPTH A BOLD NEW PLAN TO KEEP THE ARMED FORCES FIGHTING FIT AND YOUNGER he new Agnipath re- cruitment scheme for the Army, Air Force and the Navy which was unveiled Tuesday, does hold promise to radically transform the forces with the infusion of fresh blood every four years. At the end of four years a significant percent of the troops will get a chance to be retained for a longer period. These soldiers will be called Ag- niveers. The scheme offers at- tractive incentives for the youth and at the same time drastically reduces the defence budget as the recruits will not be eligible for pension. The scheme will be different from the Short Service Commission which is meant for recruiting only officers. Some objections to the scheme stem from the short service pe- riod which may not be enough for the assimilation of Agniveer in the larger set-up, a major re- quirement in the armed forces. Some retired officers chose to call them “tourist soldiers” whose mind may be preoccupied with life after four years, affect- ing operational ethos. TOP TWEETS T ormer judges of the Supreme Court and high courts have writ- ten a letter to the Chief Justice of India NV Ra- mana requesting him to take suo motu cognizance of the bulldozer justice being meted out to protesters in Kanpur and Prayagraj. Such letters have lost their significance in the prevailing scenario of deep-seated biases, whether political or communal. To recall, in April a num- ber of former bureaucrats had written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi drawing his attention to the “politics of hate”. The PM did not have to respond to that letter as an equal number of former bureaucrats, judges and generals came together to defend the Modi govern- ment and questioned the mo- tives of signatories to the let- ter. The list of those defend- ing the Central government included eight judges. This time around there may be former judges of the Supreme Court and high courts who would probably agree with the new system of justice to silence the minori- ties and curb democratic pro- tests. If they also decide to write to the CJI those in ur- gent need of justice will have to wait for delayed justice. Provided they are left with the means and the courage to take on the system. The letter has requested for “suo motu cognizance” which the courts could have taken without being remind- ed of it. How would these judges have reacted to a similar situ- ation while they were in of- fice? Probably, they would have flowed with the tide. Some of the innocent victims must be wondering who will protect their rights if the courts don’t. A LETTER TO CJI BUT TO WHAT AVAIL Former judges of the Supreme Court and HCs have written a letter to the Chief Justice of India NV Ramana requesting him to take suo motu cognizance of the bulldozer justice being meted out to protesters in Kanpur and Prayagraj F RS POLL RESULTS WILL BOOST NDA PROSPECTS ‘PREZ’ WORTHY WIN olitics is a game of strange bedfellows. In rajneeti, it’s not over till it’s over. The Saf- fron party’s strength in (state) assemblies suggested that the party could retain only 20 of the 24 Rajya Sabha seats it held in the biennial polls for 57 seats but as the (electoral) process got over and on Saturday it was real- ised that the BJP finally won 22 and also ensured victory of an Independent, underlin- ing its masterstroke, pull among unaffiliated legisla- tors and disaffected lawmak- ers obviously in the Opposi- tion camp. As it is said in cricket that the match is not over till the last ball is bowled, the BJP’s better-than-expected show is a boost to the ruling National Democratic Alliance ahead of the President’s poll, and is an obvious blow to its rivals, as the Rajya Sabha elections have again highlighted dis- sension and lack of cohesion among the Opposition ranks. The BJP’s ambitious ef- forts to force a contest in these states besides Ra- jasthan by backing Independ- ents or putting its own candi- dates to benefit from division in the ranks of its rivals have paid dividends as it bagged one extra seat each in all states barring Rajasthan. Astute politician and Con- gress veteran and Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot not only managed to keep his flock of its supporting MLAs together but also embar- rassed the BJP by wooing over one of its MLAs to foil the saffron party’s efforts to get an independent, outgoing MP and media baron Sub- hash Chandra, elected. BJP is obviously happy with the outcome, especially in Maharashtra where the ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi coalition of the Shiv Sena, the NCP and the Congress suffered a setback despite be- ing at the helm of power with the BJP bagging three of the six seats at stake! It is also a boost to BJP leader and former chief min- ister Devendra Fadnavis, who has had his share of set- backs since losing power in the state as he who outsmart- ed and checkmated the Shiv Sena. BJP also bagged three of the four seats in Karnataka as its rivals the Congress and the JD(S) could not come to a pact and fought separately and thus lost. Congress veteran Bhupin- der Singh Hooda suffered a blow as the party’s nominee Ajay Maken lost, with one of its MLAs, Kuldeep Bishnoi, voting for the BJP-backed independent Kartikeya Sharma, also a media entre- preneur, and the vote of an- other MLA turning out to be invalid. LOSS OF FACE FOR HOODA Hooda failed in his first test after getting complete con- trol of the party after the re- centoverhaulingof Congress but also in ensuring that all legislators’ votes were cast properly; while the cross- voting by Kuldeep Bishnoi, a known Hooda detractor, was a clear writing on the wall, another Congress vote was also found to be invalid that led to Maken’s defeat. THE BISHNOI FACTOR Even as the visibly annoyed Congress high command has expelled Bishnoi from all the party posts for his cross-vot- ing and now if he pulls the plug on the party… it would not only dent the Grand Old Party’s non-Jat vote-bank in Haryana but also make things hugely difficult for Hooda within the party . Bish- noi, a four-time MLA and two-time MP, is younger son of former Congress chief minister late Bhajan Lal who is till date the tallest non-Jat leader of the state who was Haryana CM for three times and also Union minister. Ahead of the presidential poll, which is scheduled for July 18 if more than one per- son is in fray , the Rajya Sabha results are a morale booster to the ruling combine. In an electoral college of around 10.86 lakh votes, the BJP-led alliance is estimated to have more than 48 per cent of votes and is hopeful that non-aligned regional parties like YSR Congress and the BJD will now support it. MAMATA’S FRESH BID Meanwhile, TMC chief Mamata Banerjee has invited leaders of 19 political parties on June 15 to discuss the up- coming presidential election. Mamata said the election gives the “perfect opportuni- ty for all progressive opposi- tion parties” to discuss the future course of Indian poli- tics. “At a time when our de- mocracy is going through troubling times, I believe that a fruitful confluence of oppo- sition voices is the need of the hour,” she added. Banerjee addressed the let- ter to Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, Shiv Sena’s Uddhav Thackeray, Aam Aadmi Par- ty’s Arvind Kejriwal and Bhagwant Mann and Com- munist Party of India (Marx- ist) leader Pinarayi Vijayan. Her attempt is seen as a move to expand TMC’s na- tional footprint after the par- ty’s massive win in the cru- cial 2021 Assembly elections.  THE VIEWS EXPRESSED BY THE AUTHOR ARE PERSONAL P THE MATHEMATICS With one Independent MLA’s absence and one rejected vote of Congress, the House had 88 votes with each vote having a value of 100 Since a candidate required 2,934 votes to win, BJP’s Krishan Panwar won with 3,600 votes while Maken got, 2,900 However, with the help of votes of BJP coalition part- ner Jannayak Janta Party (JJP), Independents, one each of Kuldeep Bishnoi, Haryana Lokhit Party (HLP), Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) and the remaining votes of Panwar, Independ- ent candidate Kartikeya Sharma’s votes value was finally pegged at 2300 Mamata said the election gives the “perfect opportunity for all progressive opposition parties” to discuss the future course of Indian politics. “At a time when our democracy is going through troubling times, I believe that a fruitful confluence of opposition voices is the need of the hour,” she added. Banerjee addressed the letter to Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, Shiv Sena’s Uddhav Thackeray, AAP’s Arvind Kejriwal and Bhagwant Mann and Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Pinarayi Vijayan. He said Dehu’s Shila Mandir is not only a centre of power of de- votion but also paves the way for the cultural future of India. PM Modi further said, “Saints like Tu- karam played a very important role in the life of a national hero like Chhatrapati Shiva- ji Maharaj. Be- fore the election for the highest constitutional post, it is the responsibil- ity of the ruling party to talk to all the parties and try to build a consensus. However, inthehistoryof independent India, there has never been a consen- sus in the election of the President except at one point. Every time the election is hotly contest- ed and this time also the same will be repeated be- cause Cong and other op- positionpartieshavealso started their prepara- tions. Therefore, it is cer- tain that no consensus will be reached with the opposition. Asfarasalliesarecon- cerned, there is only a formality to make them agree. The position of any BJP ally is not such that they would question the candidate chosen by it. The allies will neces- sarily agree with who- ever BJP fields. Anyway , most of the allies of the BJP have left and the few parties that are left also do not have many votes. The BJP has 42 per cent of the votes in the Elec- toral College that elects the President and its al- lies have six per cent of the total votes. These six per cent votes are con- firmed. Before that, once both the leaders of BJP have to talk to the allies. The Ken-Betwa scheme, the first being implemented under the National River Linking Project (NRLP), seeks to bring nearly 11 lakh hectares of land under irrigation in the parched Bundelkhand region straddling Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. The NRLP pro- poses transfer of water from water-surplus ba- sins where there is flooding to water-deficit basins where there is drought and scarcity through inter-basin wa- ter transfer projects. Cautioning against riv- er linking projects, the experts said these can lead to disturbance of very complex nature cy- cles that can have far-reaching adverse impact on monsoon cy- cles, biodiversity and socio-economic issues. Ken has a very unique fish which has medici- nal value and it is very specific to Ken and that is not found in Betwa currently . If Ken’s water is diverted to Betwa then fish and other bio- diversity will also move and when it moves then you do not know what impact it will have on the local fish, he told PTI. A family youngster is keen to learn from you, so don’t disappoint. You may have to awaken partner’s interest in you once again. studentof mine recently came tomeandasked me to suggest a poem that she could recite at her school’s Po- etry Recitation Competi- tion. I intuitively gravi- tated to one of my favour- ite poems titled Human Family by Maya Angelou. Foryourreference,I’dlike to share that poem here before I continue: I note the obvious dif- ferences in the human family. Some of us are serious, some thrive on comedy. Some declare their lives are lived as true profundity, and others claim they really live the real reality. The variety of our skin tones can confuse, bemuse, delight, brown and pink and beige and purple, tan and blue and white. I’ve sailed upon the seven seas and stopped in every land, I’ve seen the wonders of the world not yet one common man. I know ten thousand women called Jane and Mary Jane, but I’ve not seen any two who really were the same. Mirror twins are differ- ent although their features jibe, and lovers think quite different thoughts while lying side by side. We love and lose in China, we weep on England’s moors, and laugh and moan in Guinea, and thrive on Spanish shores. We seek success in Fin- land, are born and die in Maine. In minor ways we differ , inmajor ,we’rethesame. I note the obvious dif- ferences between each sort and type, but we are more alike, my friends, than we are unalike. We are more alike, my friends, than we are unalike. We are more alike, my friends, than we are unalike. The reason I thought of sharing this specific poem in this article is that as we inch closer to another landmark year of our country’s inde- pendence; it is the es- sence of this poem that is the core thought I’d like to leave you with as we ponder our decades of glorious Independence. India, our great nation, draws immense pride from our ethos of inclu- sion, of our diversity, and our multi-cultural, multi-racial, multi-eth- nic past and present. However, some would contend that this great and beautiful diversity is being undermined in present-day India. That is how we once were, di- vided based on narrow- mindedness and myopic outlooks, we are, again today! And that to me, really puts a serious question mark on the entire notion of free- dom, of true, essential, liberty. Today freedom means different things to different people. Sure. But are we not, in this digitized, connected, hyper-tech world, re- gressing if we begin to colour our outlook, be- haviour, opinions and decisions with the col- our and origin of skin? Is this the independent country we want to live in, one that is divided, compartmentalized, in mind and boundary? What kind of a country are we leaving for our children? We want and encourage kids to read the newspaper; what they read each day in the papers are hate sto- ries, communal vio- lence, and religious un- rest! Is that not a crying shame? And is that not also a huge black blot on the notion of free India? Hope rests now with the young generation. I notice through my inter- actions with thousands of students; that young children are innocent, instinctively inclusive, fair, just, and inherently equalist. Neither do they differentiate based on status, nor class or religion. They are pure. It is this purity and plu- rality that we as parents, educators and caregiv- ers must do our utmost to preserve and protect. That our own biases should not reach and in- fluence these young minds. We must set ex- amples for these chil- dren to follow and lead with. Simple things around the house, such as treating staff with care and sensitivity and celebrating all festivals, no matter their origin. These kinds of acts will be imbibed by children as their natural and or- ganic way of being and shape their already in- clusive beliefs into a life- long, accepting ethos. I leave you, therefore, in this article with a sim- ple message. Celebrate freedom but be truly free. Exalt liberty but only if you understand true liberty. And accept your independence, only if you are willing, to be, independent in your thinking. Bestow upon our children, the gift of true Independence and acceptance.
