HC ORDERS ENQUIRY INTO HOW BJP’S SOMAIYA GOT COPY
OF ORDER IN CASE AGAINST FORMER MINISTER MUSHRIF
First India Bureau
Mumbai: The Bombay
High court on Friday
ordered an enquiry into
how BJP leader Kirit
Somaiya obtained a
copy of an order passed
by a magistrate in a
case where former Ma-
harashtra minister
Hasan Mushrif is
among the accused.
A division bench of
Justices Revati Mohite
Dere and Sharmila
Deshmukh directed the
principal district judge
of Pune to conduct the
enquiry
.
It was a “serious mat-
ter” to find out how
somebody who is not a
party to the proceed-
ings got a judicial order
copy without applying
for a certified copy, the
bench said.
The HC was hearing
a plea filed by Mushrif,
a NCP leader, seeking
the quashing of a First
Information Report reg-
istered against him in
Kolhapur for alleged
cheating.
The petition also
claimed that Somaiya
got a copy of a sum-
mons issued by a mag-
istrate against some
accused in the case
even though he was not
a litigant.
Somaiya had levelled
corruption allegations
against Mushrif.
The FIR is related to
alleged collection of
money from the mem-
bers of a cooperative
sugar factory in west-
ern Maharashtra’s Kol-
hapur district.
As per the complaint
filed by a member of
Kolhapur’s Santaji
Ghorpade sugar facto-
ry, the NCP leader alleg-
edly asked members to
deposit Rs 10,000 each
and promised sugar
worth the amount. But
they did not get any
sugar, it alleged.

a Union government’s

This prompted Chief

Tribal girl death: Gavit admits
she was a bonded labourer
First India Bureau
Mumbai: State Tribal
Development Minister
Vijaykumar Gavit on
Friday admitted in the
Legislative Council that
a tribal girl who died in
September 2022 worked
as a bonded labourer,
drawing criticism from
Opposition members.
The practice of bond-
ed labour is banned in
the state.
As he replied to a
question related to
“Ashram Shalas” run
for tribal children,
Gavit was also asked to
respond on the death of
a 10-year-old tribal girl
from Nashik district
about six months ago.
The girl had been tak-
en to work in the
Ahmednagar district
but her employer
dumped her outside her
parents’ home when she
was quite unwell. The
girl, who had injury
marks on her body
, died
during treatment later.
Opposition leaders,
including Ambadas
Danve, Eknath Khadse
and Shashikant Shin-
de pressed Gavit to
make a statement on
the girl’s death and de-
manded to know
whether she was sold.
Trying to counter the
Opposition members,
Gavit said, “The girl
was not sold but was a
bonded labourer. She
was working with a
family in Parner tehsil
of Ahmednagar.”
While Gavit’s admis-
sion came as an embar-
rassmentfortheEknath
Shinde-BJP govern-
ment, it also prompted
rival MLCs to target the
government.
Expressing outrage
at the incident, Janata
Dal member Kapil Pa-
til said, “Maharashtra
has officially banned
bonded labour through
an Act. It is shameful
that the minister open-
ly admits to the preva-
lence of such a prac-
tice in the state. Gavit
should explain to the
House how the girl was
made to work as a
bonded labourer.”
Opposition
leaders criticize
state govt over
negligence in
abolishing
practice of
bonded labour
I can understand
negligence in providing
some facilities but the
sale or bonded labour involving
children is unpardonable.
The state should not take such
incidents lightly.

‘Smog tower proposal can turn out to be white elephant’
First India Bureau
Mumbai: The Brihan-
mumbai Corporation’s
(BMC) decision to set
up smog towers to miti-
gate the bad air quality
in the city has been
criticized by the mem-
bers of the scientific
community who said
that the move can turn
out to be a white ele-
phant for the civic body
.
The BMC in its civic
budget for 2023-24 fiscal
has announced that it
would set up 14 smog
towers which will be 30-
feet long. These towers
will purify the air in a
1-kilometre radius
through a radio-wave
technique, which would
enable the dust parti-
cles to get ionized.
“It is impossible to
clean the atmospheric
air using a smog tower.
These towers suck the
air from the outer at-
mosphere, purify it and
then release the air in
the same polluted at-
mosphere. This is quite
similar to cleaning a
dirty cloth in the wash-
ing machine and throw-
ing that cloth back
again in the dirt. So, un-
less the existing atmos-
phere is free of pollut-
ants, the smog towers
cannot bring effective
results,” said Dr Abhijit
Chatterjee, associate
professor, Bose Insti-
tute Department of Sci-
ence and Technology
.
Chatterjeewasspeak-
ing at a webinar on the
effectiveness of pro-
posed smog towers in
Mumbai. This webinar
was organized by Clean
Air Mumbai – a net-
work of citizens and
civil society groups
working towards the
common goal of clean-
ing up Mumbai’s air.
“The smog tower only
collects particulate mat-
ter that are dust residu-
als and chemical com-
pounds. However, there
are other toxic elements
like ozone and nitrogen
dioxide. Therefore, it is
entirely unscientific to
claim that the atmos-
phere could be cleaned
by trapping the air and
releasing it later
through this purifier,”
Chatterjee said.

Mumbai: A whistle-

by the Mumbai Air-

foreign currency sei-
zure of around `8.36
crore from an Indian
origin US citizen on
Feb 20 at the Chhatra-
pati Shivaji Maharaj
International Airport.
The foreign curren-
cy was detected and
intercepted by Central
Industrial Security
Force (CISF) person-
nel during screening
in the security hold,
after the flyer had
cleared customs and
immigration.
As per the CCTV
footage, the suspect
passenger was in fact
provided Customs pro-
tocol and escorted at
the airport for depar-
ture before being inter-
cepted by the CISF for
screening.
While CISF seized `3
crore in US dollars
(USD) in cash from a
handbag and another
`5.3 crore in USD cash
was seized by Customs
from the checked-in
baggage.
A senior CISF offi-
cial said, “The suspect
had cleared immigra-
tion and was inter-
cepted by alert CISF
personnel noticing
the unusual thickness
and linings of the
handbag.”
Sources alleged that
the suspect was pro-
vided escort to clear
immigration and se-
curity at the behest of
a senior official, who
has been in the eye of
a storm for several
misdemeanours in
the past.
CISF personnel were
surprised at the pres-
ence of two Customs
AIU officials during
interception. Senior
Customs officials have
raised eyebrows at the
behaviour of AIU offic-
ers who did not inter-
cept the suspect.
As reported by the
Free Press Journal,
the whistleblower has
also questioned the
failure of Customs
AIU’s profiling of pas-
sengers. The question
being asked is how the
passenger was allowed
to walk through immi-
gration and head to-
wards the boarding
gates without inter-
vention.
“Customs officers in
departure section just
after immigration and
before security failed
to intercept the sus-
pect. Screening of
checked-in baggage is
done by Customs,
which failed to detect
the foreign currency.
Only after CISF’s in-
terception, the check-
in baggage was of-
floaded for inspec-
tion,” lamented the
Customs official about
the working of AIU.

The rise in CBI cases against Customs officials had prompted the Airport

what he describes as “misuse of

feels that “injustice is being done

So far his initiative has won

Reddy, who is fac-
ing charges of il-
legal iron ore min-
ing in the Bellary
region of Karnataka, has
been an important part of the
BJP since 1999 when he and
his two brothers campaigned
for Sushma Swaraj against
Indira Gandhi. Swaraj dis-
tanced herself from Reddy
after they faced charges of
illegal mining. His ties with
the BJP, however, continued
to grow strong.
It was due to his efforts
that the BJP emerged as the
largest single party with 110
seats in 2008. BS Yediyurap-
pa inducted Reddy as minis-
ter for tourism and infra-
structure and as the minister
in-charge of Bellary district.
In 2011 he was found guilty
of illegal mining and de-
frauding the government by
Karnataka’s then Lokayuk-
ta, Justice Santosh Hegde.
He was subsequently arrest-
ed by the CBI but he contin-
ued to maintain close ties
with the BJP.
In 2022, Reddy formed his
own political party named
Kalyana Rajya Pragati Pak-
sha after resigning from the
BJP. The present case which
Reddy is facing in a CBI court
relates to the illegal iron ore
mining to the tune of 7 to 8
million metric tonnes during
2009-2010 for which he spent
time in jail. He is suspected
to have parked substantial
part of his earnings in sev-
eral countries.
The rule of mining mafia
which Reddy ran in Bellary
was dubiously called the
“Republic of Bellary”, which
did not allow any interfer-
ence from any government
machinery
. Despite his noto-
riety as a mining baron, Red-
dy remains a popular figure
in politics. This time, how-
ever, the CBI seems to have
turned the heat on him.

tions (ASEAN). Though the
Quad came into being in 2007
but its revival can be attribut-
ed to the events in the period
between 2012-2020 where each
Quad member experienced
Chinese aggression. China
jeopardized security by refus-
ing to respect internationally
accepted maritime rules, chal-
lenging rules-based orders,
claiming lands and islands,
building artificial islands, and
becoming a threat to peace in
the Indo-Pacific. The Quad al-
liance had its roots in the fact
that all four nations are demo-
cratic nations with common
maritime interests for trade
and commerce in the region.

mits, information exchanges
and military drills of all the

ment.
Interests of the US. The
Indo-Pacific spans two oceans
and several continents, mak-
ing it important to U.S. mari-
time interests. Almost 40 per-
cent of Global trade is routed

ing that peace and security in
the maritime domain under-
pins the development and

sions over their trade imbal-
ance, its pursuit of regional
interests in South China Sea

constant threat of aggression
binds US to initiate actions to
contain China and its growing
clout in the region.
Japan’s interests. Former
Japanese Prime Minister
Shinzo Abe was a strong be-
liever in the Quad’s power to
ensure a “free and open Indo-
Pacific.” Japan depends heav-
ily on open sea lanes for its
trade with the world and has
been pioneer in supporting
investment in manufactur-
ing, trade, and infrastructure
development across the re-
gion. Japan has been always
wary of Chinese military
build-up and assertion of its
sovereignty in the South Chi-
na Sea, as well as provoca-
tions toward Senkaku Islands
in the East China Sea. Japan
has its focus on to offer alter-
native sources of assistance
in field of electronics and in-
frastructure to overcome Chi-
nese dominance and condi-
tionalities put in trade for the
countries of Indo Pacific.
Australia’sInterests.Over
a decade or so there has been
sortof “freezeof relations”be-
tween Australia and China,
mainly because Australia has
been actively challenging Chi-
nese coercive behavior and ac-
tionsthatthreatentheexisting
world order. Australian de-
mand for an independent in-
quiryintooriginsof COVID-19
hasfurtherdippedthebilateral
relations. Australia is econom-
ically vulnerable to Chinese
aggression as China has been
its major trading partner and
has huge number of Chinese
students studying and tourists
visiting Australia. From an
Australian perspective, in the
post-COVID world, the need to
reconstruct supply chains and
preserve the rules-based inter-
national order is high; the ties
between the Quad nations
must continue to strengthen.
India’s Interest. The lin-
geringborderissuewhichsaw
fierce clashes at Doklam and
Galwan in Ladakh region and
latertheincursionsinTawang
in Arunachal in last three
years have just been part of
Chinese aggressive gestures
against India. India has stood
its ground by an giving an
equally blunt reply and
strengthening its ties further
with the QUAD countries. In-
dia’s growing friendship with
the QUAD and its increased
activities in South China Sea
hasnotauguredwellwithChi-
na. Through the Quad, India
can counterbalance China’s
growing presence in the Indo-
Pacific region, including its
BRI (Belt and Road Initiative)
where Chinese are trying to
encircleIndiabybuildingport
facilitiesinitsneighbourhood.
The Quad opens Indian oppor-
tunitiesinthefieldof informa-
tion sharing, defence ties, and
it has the potential to boost its
pharmaceutical prowess in
the post-pandemic world.
However, the Quad getting
reduced to an anti-China
grouping has some inherent
dangers for India as it trig-
gers the possibility of reacti-
vating tensions with China
on different fronts, and it will
undermine India’s involve-
ment in other organisations
like BRICS and SCO where
both India and China are im-
portant members. India’s in-
volvement in the Quad could
also risk alienating two im-
portant Indian allies, Iran,
and Myanmar being targets
of other three members.
The China Version. China
criticises the Quad as it sees it
as a mechanism to contain its
global rise and accuses the
group of being dedicated to
undermining its interests.
The regular Joint Exercises
by all four navies of the quad,
U.S. President Joe Biden’s vir-
tual Quad meeting of all
Heads of Quad states on COV-
ID-19 vaccines, climate
change, and technological in-
novation and supply-chain
resilience has further irked
Chinese and its relations with
each of the Quad members
have become more tense dur-
ing the pandemic and contin-
ues so even in post Pandemic
period. The Chinese have also
been critical of outcome of
the recent quad Foreign Min-
isters meet and will be keenly

US REAFFIRMS “INDIA IS A

the already extensive
ties between our two
countries,” said US
State Department
spokesperson.
He said that the US
want to deepen global
strategic partnership
with India.
“There are various

India-US bilateral re-

Regular exchange of

Retail inflation in India easing slightly
New Delhi (FIB): Retail
inflation in India likely
eased a bit in February but
stayed above the Reserve
Bank of India’s upper
threshold for a second
straight month, keeping
the central bank on course
for further policy tighten-
ing, according to a Reuters
poll.
Rises in food prices,
which account for nearly
half of the Consumer Price
Index (CPI) basket, likely
moderated last month.
However, the bulk of the
slowdown probably came
from easing international
prices and the govern-
ment’s efforts to provide
additional supplies of
wheat.
Despite those temporary
measures, lower crop
yields because of warmer-
than-usual temperatures
last year and this year
were likely to keep infla-
tion elevated in the near-
term period.
The March 2-9 Reuters
poll of 43 economists
showed inflation, as meas-
ured by the CPI, likely
fell to an annual 6.35% in
February from 6.52% in
January.
Only one economist ex-
pected inflation to fall be-
low the 6.00% mark, the
upper limit of the RBI’s
tolerance band. Forecasts
ranged from 5.89% to 6.70%
for the data, which are due
to be released at 1200 GMT
on March 13.
“With vegetable prices
normalising, inflation has
started to harden as the in-
herent price pressures
have barely shown any
meaningful signs of mod-
eration.”
“In fact, food inflation
ex-pulses and vegetables
has now reached a nine-
and-a-half-year high,”
wrote Kunal Kundu,
India economist at Societe
Generale.
“While we do not expect
a sharp rise in inflation
over the next few quarters,
the pace of easing would be
much slower than expect-
ed, especially given the
likely impact of El Nino
weather condition on food
prices. We cannot rule out
(a) further upside surprise
to inflation.”
An El Nino weather pat-
tern usually results in be-
low-average rainfall, cut-
ting yields and pushing up
food prices.
A weaker rupee, which
fell around 10% last year
and is expected to recover
only some of those losses
in the coming months, is
also adding to upward
price pressures.

Acting on a directive

the cab service firms
have applied for aggre-

Since 2014, app-based

measures to address
any violations by these
operators, which could
potentially be im-

decided to add another
Rs6,000 to their account.
But this is not enough,”
he said.

Farmers in the state
are facing challenges
such as poor harvests

They have to throw

sometimes because of

Pawar also alleged
that electricity connec-

Electricity bills of
farmers should be
waived as they are fac-

The economy of Ma-

country can not grow if
farmers are in distress,
the NCP leader said.
Farmers in the state
were also having trou-

Burgundy provides a
classic, opulent-
looking alternative to
brights and pastels
throughout the spring
and summer. Let’s
dive into the world of
Burgundy fashion
with City First!
MRIDULA SHARMA
cityfirst@firstindia.co.in
he word “Burgundy”
is derived from the
wine of the same
name, which has a
deep shade of red.
Devil Red is another
name for burgundy.
Elegant, classic, and refined
describe this colour. Moreo-
ver, the hue is frequently used
to denote wealth and author-
ity. When it comes to colour
combinations, colours like
grey and burgundy go well
brilliantly. Burgundy also
gives lighter hues like teal,
gold, and yellow an intriguing
depth.
Your burgundy dress is ap-
propriate for both a formal
occasion and a party hour.
With the correct accessories,
you can dress it up for just
about any event. There is no
right or wrong way to do it.
But there are some amazing
combinations you can try
with your burgundy outfits.
It’s colour adaptability is un-
questionably one of the rea-
sons it is so well-liked and has
long been in fashion.
You don’t need to choose
any brightly coloured shoes
to complete your look because
burgundy is a strong, dramat-
ic hue on its own. Instead,
look through your closet for
any wedges, sandals, or high
heels with a neutral or gold
tone. They are a nice way to
accessories your garment
without going overboard.
Bring your belongings in a
compact, opaque bag. Avoid
carrying a bulky purse or
handbag around all day by
keeping your wallet, phone,
and other essentials in a
stylish clutch. Black
clutches add a sophisticat-
ed touch without over-
powering the rest of your
ensemble.
Burgundy and soft
pink work well togeth-
er to create a roman-
tic image. This tint
pairs beautifully
with colours like
blue or almond for
everyday attire.
The outcome? An
elegant and
classy appear-
ance.

  • 1. TOUGH TIMES AHEAD? HC ORDERS ENQUIRY INTO HOW BJP’S SOMAIYA GOT COPY OF ORDER IN CASE AGAINST FORMER MINISTER MUSHRIF First India Bureau Mumbai: The Bombay High court on Friday ordered an enquiry into how BJP leader Kirit Somaiya obtained a copy of an order passed by a magistrate in a case where former Ma- harashtra minister Hasan Mushrif is among the accused. A division bench of Justices Revati Mohite Dere and Sharmila Deshmukh directed the principal district judge of Pune to conduct the enquiry . It was a “serious mat- ter” to find out how somebody who is not a party to the proceed- ings got a judicial order copy without applying for a certified copy, the bench said. The HC was hearing a plea filed by Mushrif, a NCP leader, seeking the quashing of a First Information Report reg- istered against him in Kolhapur for alleged cheating. The petition also claimed that Somaiya got a copy of a sum- mons issued by a mag- istrate against some accused in the case even though he was not a litigant. Somaiya had levelled corruption allegations against Mushrif. The FIR is related to alleged collection of money from the mem- bers of a cooperative sugar factory in west- ern Maharashtra’s Kol- hapur district. As per the complaint filed by a member of Kolhapur’s Santaji Ghorpade sugar facto- ry, the NCP leader alleg- edly asked members to deposit Rs 10,000 each and promised sugar worth the amount. But they did not get any sugar, it alleged. Kirit Somaiya —FILE PHOTO It was a “serious matter” to find out how somebody who is not a party to the proceedings got a judicial order copy Thanekars' support for Uddhav, Sena assured, claims Raut First India Bureau Thane: Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut on Friday said he was confident the people of Thane will remain with his party chief Uddhav Thackeray. Addressing ‘Shiv Jayanti’ rally at Thane, Raut said no force can break relation the people of Thane have with Sena. The people of Thane are, in fact, waiting to teach a lesson to those who betrayed the party, Raut asserted at the well-attended event in the presence of local Lok Sabha MP Rajan Vichare. First India Bureau Nagpur: Union Road Transport Minister Ni- tin Gadkari said on Fri- day that bad quality of DPRs leads to a host of problems including cost escalation in road pro- jects, and he was in the “mood to take a deci- sion to allow interna- tional firms to make them.” He was speaking at the International Con- ference on Asian Sce- nario on Infrastructur- al Development here. There is a need to re- duce cost of production in road projects, he said. Expressing disap- pointment over the quality of DPRs in road construction, the min- ister said he has “never seen a perfect DPR” in his life. ‘Poor quality of projects DPRs a major problem’ BSE SENSEX 59135.13 671.15 | NSE NIFTY 17412.90 176.70 MUMBAI l SATURDAY, MARCH 11, 2023 l Pages 12 l 3.00 RNI TITLE NO. The BMC in its civic budget for 2023-24 fiscal has announced that it would set up 14 smog towers which will be 30- feet long. These towers will purify the air in a 1-kilometre radius through a radio-wave technique, which would enable the dust parti- cles to get ionized. “It is impossible to clean the atmospheric air using a smog tower. These towers suck the air from the outer at- mosphere, purify it and then release the air in the same polluted at- mosphere. This is quite similar to cleaning a dirty cloth in the wash- ing machine and throw- ing that cloth back again in the dirt. So, un- less the existing atmos- phere is free of pollut- ants, the smog towers cannot bring effective results,” said Dr Abhijit Chatterjee, associate professor, Bose Insti- tute Department of Sci- ence and Technology . Chatterjeewasspeak- ing at a webinar on the effectiveness of pro- posed smog towers in Mumbai. This webinar was organized by Clean Air Mumbai – a net- work of citizens and civil society groups working towards the common goal of clean- ing up Mumbai’s air. “The smog tower only collects particulate mat- ter that are dust residu- als and chemical com- pounds. However, there are other toxic elements like ozone and nitrogen dioxide. Therefore, it is entirely unscientific to claim that the atmos- phere could be cleaned by trapping the air and releasing it later through this purifier,” Chatterjee said. GOOD IDEA? The foreign curren- cy was detected and intercepted by Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) person- nel during screening in the security hold, after the flyer had cleared customs and immigration. As per the CCTV footage, the suspect passenger was in fact provided Customs pro- tocol and escorted at the airport for depar- ture before being inter- cepted by the CISF for screening. While CISF seized `3 crore in US dollars (USD) in cash from a handbag and another `5.3 crore in USD cash was seized by Customs from the checked-in baggage. A senior CISF offi- cial said, “The suspect had cleared immigra- tion and was inter- cepted by alert CISF personnel noticing the unusual thickness and linings of the handbag.” Sources alleged that the suspect was pro- vided escort to clear immigration and se- curity at the behest of a senior official, who has been in the eye of a storm for several misdemeanours in the past. CISF personnel were surprised at the pres- ence of two Customs AIU officials during interception. Senior Customs officials have raised eyebrows at the behaviour of AIU offic- ers who did not inter- cept the suspect. As reported by the Free Press Journal, the whistleblower has also questioned the failure of Customs AIU’s profiling of pas- sengers. The question being asked is how the passenger was allowed to walk through immi- gration and head to- wards the boarding gates without inter- vention. “Customs officers in departure section just after immigration and before security failed to intercept the sus- pect. Screening of checked-in baggage is done by Customs, which failed to detect the foreign currency. Sibal is an independent member of the Rajya Sabha who feels that “injustice is being done to citizens, democratic institu- tions, Opposition parties, jour- nalists, teachersandbusinesses”. So far his initiative has won support from leaders of different political parties, but its transfor- mation into a people’s movement is yet to happen, presumably be- cause it is still in a nascent stage. For his platform’s proposed pub- lic meeting at Jantar Mantar on March11Sibalhasissuedanopen invitation to everyone, although lawyers will be in the lead. Sibal’s objective is “not to crit- icise Modi, but to reform him”. How he plans to go about his positive agenda is not yet known. S ali Janardhana Reddy, who is fac- ing charges of il- legal iron ore min- ing in the Bellary region of Karnataka, has been an important part of the BJP since 1999 when he and his two brothers campaigned for Sushma Swaraj against Indira Gandhi. Swaraj dis- tanced herself from Reddy after they faced charges of illegal mining. His ties with the BJP, however, continued to grow strong. It was due to his efforts that the BJP emerged as the largest single party with 110 seats in 2008. BS Yediyurap- pa inducted Reddy as minis- ter for tourism and infra- structure and as the minister in-charge of Bellary district. In 2011 he was found guilty of illegal mining and de- frauding the government by Karnataka’s then Lokayuk- ta, Justice Santosh Hegde. He was subsequently arrest- ed by the CBI but he contin- ued to maintain close ties with the BJP. In 2022, Reddy formed his own political party named Kalyana Rajya Pragati Pak- sha after resigning from the BJP. The present case which Reddy is facing in a CBI court relates to the illegal iron ore mining to the tune of 7 to 8 million metric tonnes during 2009-2010 for which he spent time in jail. He is suspected to have parked substantial part of his earnings in sev- eral countries. The rule of mining mafia which Reddy ran in Bellary was dubiously called the “Republic of Bellary”, which did not allow any interfer- ence from any government machinery . Despite his noto- riety as a mining baron, Red- dy remains a popular figure in politics. This time, how- ever, the CBI seems to have turned the heat on him. Though the Quad came into being in 2007 but its revival can be attribut- ed to the events in the period between 2012-2020 where each Quad member experienced Chinese aggression. China jeopardized security by refus- ing to respect internationally accepted maritime rules, chal- lenging rules-based orders, claiming lands and islands, building artificial islands, and becoming a threat to peace in the Indo-Pacific. The Quad al- liance had its roots in the fact that all four nations are demo- cratic nations with common maritime interests for trade and commerce in the region. Thealliancenowholdsregular meetings, semi-regular sum- mits, information exchanges and military drills of all the member countries. The Indo-Pacific spans two oceans and several continents, mak- ing it important to U.S. mari- time interests. Almost 40 per- cent of Global trade is routed throughhereandhasitsorigin orexitintheregion.Recognis- ing that peace and security in the maritime domain under- pins the development and prosperity of the Indo-Pacific, the US finds working closely with its strategic treaty allies AustraliaandJapanandgrow- ing important strategic part- ner India as natural for secure Indo - Pacific. The Chinese as- sertions to challenge the US led regional status quo, ten- sions over their trade imbal- ance, its pursuit of regional interests in South China Sea andkeepingtheTaiwanunder constant threat of aggression binds US to initiate actions to contain China and its growing clout in the region. Japan’s interests. Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was a strong be- liever in the Quad’s power to ensure a “free and open Indo- Pacific.” Japan depends heav- ily on open sea lanes for its trade with the world and has been pioneer in supporting investment in manufactur- ing, trade, and infrastructure development across the re- gion. Japan has been always wary of Chinese military build-up and assertion of its sovereignty in the South Chi- na Sea, as well as provoca- tions toward Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea. Japan has its focus on to offer alter- native sources of assistance in field of electronics and in- frastructure to overcome Chi- nese dominance and condi- tionalities put in trade for the countries of Indo Pacific. Australia’sInterests.Over a decade or so there has been sortof “freezeof relations”be- tween Australia and China, mainly because Australia has been actively challenging Chi- nese coercive behavior and ac- tionsthatthreatentheexisting world order. Australian de- mand for an independent in- quiryintooriginsof COVID-19 hasfurtherdippedthebilateral relations. Australia is econom- ically vulnerable to Chinese aggression as China has been its major trading partner and has huge number of Chinese students studying and tourists visiting Australia. From an Australian perspective, in the post-COVID world, the need to reconstruct supply chains and preserve the rules-based inter- national order is high; the ties between the Quad nations must continue to strengthen. India’s Interest. The lin- geringborderissuewhichsaw fierce clashes at Doklam and Galwan in Ladakh region and latertheincursionsinTawang in Arunachal in last three years have just been part of Chinese aggressive gestures against India. India has stood its ground by an giving an equally blunt reply and strengthening its ties further with the QUAD countries. In- dia’s growing friendship with the QUAD and its increased activities in South China Sea hasnotauguredwellwithChi- na. Through the Quad, India can counterbalance China’s growing presence in the Indo- Pacific region, including its BRI (Belt and Road Initiative) where Chinese are trying to encircleIndiabybuildingport facilitiesinitsneighbourhood. The Quad opens Indian oppor- tunitiesinthefieldof informa- tion sharing, defence ties, and it has the potential to boost its pharmaceutical prowess in the post-pandemic world. However, the Quad getting reduced to an anti-China grouping has some inherent dangers for India as it trig- gers the possibility of reacti- vating tensions with China on different fronts, and it will undermine India’s involve- ment in other organisations like BRICS and SCO where both India and China are im- portant members. India’s in- volvement in the Quad could also risk alienating two im- portant Indian allies, Iran, and Myanmar being targets of other three members. The China Version. China criticises the Quad as it sees it as a mechanism to contain its global rise and accuses the group of being dedicated to undermining its interests. The regular Joint Exercises by all four navies of the quad, U.S. President Joe Biden’s vir- tual Quad meeting of all Heads of Quad states on COV- ID-19 vaccines, climate change, and technological in- novation and supply-chain resilience has further irked Chinese and its relations with each of the Quad members have become more tense dur- ing the pandemic and contin- ues so even in post Pandemic period. Rises in food prices, which account for nearly half of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) basket, likely moderated last month. However, the bulk of the slowdown probably came from easing international prices and the govern- ment’s efforts to provide additional supplies of wheat. Despite those temporary measures, lower crop yields because of warmer- than-usual temperatures last year and this year were likely to keep infla- tion elevated in the near- term period. The March 2-9 Reuters poll of 43 economists showed inflation, as meas- ured by the CPI, likely fell to an annual 6.35% in February from 6.52% in January. Only one economist ex- pected inflation to fall be- low the 6.00% mark, the upper limit of the RBI’s tolerance band. Forecasts ranged from 5.89% to 6.70% for the data, which are due to be released at 1200 GMT on March 13. “With vegetable prices normalising, inflation has started to harden as the in- herent price pressures have barely shown any meaningful signs of mod- eration.” “In fact, food inflation ex-pulses and vegetables has now reached a nine- and-a-half-year high,” wrote Kunal Kundu, India economist at Societe Generale. “While we do not expect a sharp rise in inflation over the next few quarters, the pace of easing would be much slower than expect- ed, especially given the likely impact of El Nino weather condition on food prices. We cannot rule out (a) further upside surprise to inflation.” An El Nino weather pat- tern usually results in be- low-average rainfall, cut- ting yields and pushing up food prices. A weaker rupee, which fell around 10% last year and is expected to recover only some of those losses in the coming months, is also adding to upward price pressures. Let’s dive into the world of Burgundy fashion with City First! MRIDULA SHARMA cityfirst@firstindia.co.in he word “Burgundy” is derived from the wine of the same name, which has a deep shade of red. Devil Red is another name for burgundy. Elegant, classic, and refined describe this colour. Moreo- ver, the hue is frequently used to denote wealth and author- ity. When it comes to colour combinations, colours like grey and burgundy go well brilliantly. Burgundy also gives lighter hues like teal, gold, and yellow an intriguing depth. Your burgundy dress is ap- propriate for both a formal occasion and a party hour. With the correct accessories, you can dress it up for just about any event. There is no right or wrong way to do it. But there are some amazing combinations you can try with your burgundy outfits. It’s colour adaptability is un- questionably one of the rea- sons it is so well-liked and has long been in fashion. You don’t need to choose any brightly coloured shoes to complete your look because burgundy is a strong, dramat- ic hue on its own. Instead, look through your closet for any wedges, sandals, or high heels with a neutral or gold tone. They are a nice way to accessories your garment without going overboard. Bring your belongings in a compact, opaque bag. Avoid carrying a bulky purse or handbag around all day by keeping your wallet, phone, and other essentials in a stylish clutch. Black clutches add a sophisticat- ed touch without over- powering the rest of your ensemble. Burgundy and soft pink work well togeth- er to create a roman- tic image. This tint pairs beautifully with colours like blue or almond for everyday attire. The outcome? An elegant and classy appear- ance. T
