PM MODI SAYS CENTRAL GOVT PROJECTS CHANGING
DELHI’S FACE, RUES POLITICS ON ‘GOOD INITIATIVES’

New Delhi: It is the
country’s “misfortune”
that many good things
broughtwithgoodinten-
tions get trapped in poli-

Sunday, as he cited de-

takenbyhisgovernment
to assert that it is chang-
ing the face of Delhi.
Speaking after inau-

the Delhi-Meerut high-
way among other pro-
jects, as steps taken by
his government to solve
the region’s problems.
“It is our country’s
misfortune that many
good things brought
with good intentions get
trapped in political col-
ours. Media also gets
dragged into it due to its
TRP compulsions,” he
said,addingthatthecon-
struction of the Central

newParliamentbuilding
is going on at a fast pace.
“India’s capital will be
talked about in the com-
ingdaysandeveryIndian

He was referring to
last year’s inauguration
of the defence complex,
which he said earlier op-
erated out of dilapidated
hutmentsspreadacrossa
vast stretch of land near
Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Modi’s comments
about “good things
brought with good inten-
tions” getting trapped in
politics also come at a
time when his govern-

preference to ‘Agniveers’
if he could hire people
to protect BJP’s offices.
“Those who did not hoist
the tricolour for 52 years
after independence, they
cannot be expected to
respect our soldiers,”
Gandhi said. “Youngsters
are passionate about
joining the army because
they want to protect the
country, and not because
they want to be chowk-
idars at BJP’s offices. The
PM’s silence is a stamp on
this insult,” Rahul added.

Ask ex-ministers to vacate

to Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani
Ahmedabad: When the
BJP dissolved its entire
council of ministers fol-
lowing the resignation
of the then Gujarat
chief minister Vijay
Rupani last year in Sep-
tember, all ministers
vacated the allotted
bungalows, but soon 15
former ministers were
given govt accommoda-

rates.
Now, the Cong has de-
manded that the govt
ask all these former
ministers to vacate govt
bungalows, as none of
their children are stud-
ying in schools or col-
leges in Gandhinagar.
In a letter addressed to
CM Bhupendra Patel,
Congress party spokes-
man Manish Doshi said
that 15 former minis-
ters were allotted ‘K’

bungalows at Rs 4,800

cited was that their

PM Modi says...
Opposition parties are
demanding that it be
withdrawn, while the
ruling BJP has been
strongly defending it.
The prime minister,
however, made no di-
rect reference to the
scheme in his speech
which was largely fo-
cused on the infrastruc-
ture and development
work his government
has been doing for the
Delhi-NCR region.
Delhi has received a
beautiful infrastruc-
ture gift from the cen-
tral government, Modi
said after inaugurating
the project.
He noted that the pro-
ject will help save 55
lakh litres of fuel and
cut down pollution, add-
ing that his government
looks at increasing ur-
banisation as an oppor-
tunity and has been
working to boost ease of
living for the people.
The inauguration of
the 1.6-km-long tunnel,
which will be Delhi’s
first, will allow com-
muters travelling to In-
dia Gate and other cen-
tral Delhi areas from
east Delhi, Noida and
Ghaziabad to ditch traf-
fic snarls at ITO, Ma-
thura Road and Bhairon
Marg, and thereby save
time, fuel and money
.
“Time is money,”
Modi said, adding that
it makes headlines if
the government an-
nounces Rs 100 for peo-
ple but if Rs 200 is
saved, it is not talked
about much.
Modi also lauded the
artwork adorning the
tunnelandunderpasses,
and suggested that they
should be closed for traf-
fic for a few hours on
Sundays to allow school-
children and other peo-
ple to walk around and
appreciate the art. He
added that he will also
ask MPs to do so.
He said this is per-
haps among the world’s
longest art galleries.
The Pragati Maidan
Integrated Transit Cor-
ridor project has been
built at a cost of more
than Rs 920 crore and is
entirely funded by the
central government.
It is aimed at provid-
ing hassle-free and
smooth access to the
new world-class exhibi-
tionandconventioncen-
tre being developed at
Pragati Maidan to facili-
tate easy participation
of exhibitors and visi-
tors in the programmes
being held there.
Union Ministers Pi-
yush Goyal, Hardeep
Singh Puri, Som
Prakash, Anupriya Pa-
tel and Kaushal Kishore
were among those pre-
sent on the occasion.
Addressing the gath-
ering, Modi recalled the
enormity of the chal-
lenge to complete the
project due to traffic
congestion and the
COVID-19 pandemic. He
credited the new work
culture of New India,
workers and engineers
for the feat.
This tunnel is part of
the campaign to trans-
form Pragati Maidan
according to the needs
of the 21st century, he
said.

iolent protests by
Agniveers have al-
ready done a lot of
damage to govern-
ment property be-
sides causing inconvenience
to the people. The anger of
Agniveer aspirants was justi-
fied, but certainly not the
widespread arson and dam-
age to property
. The extent of
violence has been such that
an impression has been cre-
ated about protesters not be-
ing aspirants for jobs in the
armed forces. It is now be-
lieved that other troublemak-
ers have tried to take advan-
tage of the movement. The
crackdown and police cases
on the agitators that followed
the violence would leave the
angry youth facing a dark al-
ley
. Their entry in the defence
forces is as good as blocked.
The government is reach-
ing out to the angry youth by
announcing concessions in
the scheme. Even as Defence
Minister Rajnath Singh held
another meeting with the
three Services chiefs on Sun-
day, the government prom-
ised a 10 percent job quota for
Agniveers in paramilitary
forces to address employment
concerns of the youth at the

at these developments and

what the youth must seri-

Reacting Mindfully!
INTERNATIONAL YOGA DAY — JUNE 21
ith the moment ushering on
21st June as International
Yoga Day, it is the time to sit
back and reflect and acknowl-
edge that we all experience
suffering, discontent, or dis-
satisfaction. Acceding this
predicament is the first step
towards understanding the
painful experience which is
more relevant than ever be-
fore in the current excruciat-
ing times that we all are ex-
periencing. With everything
that is currently going on in
the world, our stress levels
may likely be heightened.
For some people, the uncer-
tainty of this time causes a
lot of anxiety, especially the
younger segment such as
small children and teenag-
ers. It’s important to realize
and practice healthy ways of
de-stressing as we learn how
to deal with normal everyday
life. While the world is gasp-
ing in bewilderment to save
itself from the agonizing Ef-
fects of home -office and in-
creasing stress on the young-
er generation which seem
rhapsodical, looking back
may hand us an enshrined
solution in the form of yoga
which may equip us to fight
this battle.
International Yoga day is a
reminder that from the an-
cient scripture to the Middle
Ages until the very recent
studies which are supported
by scientific evidence, it is
becoming very apparent that
yoga is not only the strength-
ening of the body but also
stabilizing the mind and
heart through various
breathing techniques. It is
one form of physical exercise
that works in synchroniza-
tion with the mind and soul.
There is ample literature
available on yoga not only in
India but also across Europe.
What makes yoga exclu-
sive is, it’s being inclusive.
People of all age groups, na-
tionalities, and social back-
grounds can practice it be-
cause yoga is accessible to
all. There are various kinds
of yoga practices, so it’s pos-
sible for anyone to start. Size
and fitness levels don’t mat-
ter, there are modifications
for every yoga pose. Apart
from the real physical effect
of stress and anxiety on our
younger population, the men-
tal health implications of
this can be felt just as strong-
ly. For those already suffer-
ing from mental health con-
ditions or anxiety, the added
stress can feel overwhelming
and unmanageable. Anxiety
thrives on uncertainty and
being in a constant state of
waiting for something to hap-
pen will only increase this.
Anxiety and the manner in
which we breathe are co-
joint. The principles of yoga
offer a wonderful, logical ex-
planation to regulate stress.
Studies have shown how, if
practiced in moderation
from an early age, yoga teach-
es you to train your brain for
healthy emotional outlets
and handle stress which
seem almost crucial to teen-
agers.
Breathing and yoga are of-
tentimes associated with the
same umbrella. While both
activities encourage mind-
fulness, health, and relaxa-
tion. Yoga can get intense
and serve as a workout de-
pending on the level. Breath-
ing, however, is effortless and
can be practiced everywhere
with being a little mindful.
Often, when we are in a
stressful situation, we get
anxious and do not give our
minds a chance to think logi-
cally. This is the situation
where mostly the people of
age group between 12 to 20
react frantically to the situa-
tion from day to day life.
Breathing rightfully sup-
ports our emotional health
by stamping out the informa-
tion overload that we all ex-
perience daily. It allows us a
clean space in our mind
which in turn can cast us to-
wards positivity
. We not only
feel revamped but we also
become mindful of people
and situations which lead us
to a deep consciousness of
life -force. Which the youth
needs to invest in the future.
Yoga fosters empathy and
larger understanding, and it
is worth observing that sym-
pathy and receptivity lie at
the very root of yoga’s first
principle- helping others by
helping oneself.
Yoga practice can help
young people, especially stu-
dents to develop a non-impul-
sive reaction to events. As
Krishnamurti states “You
can perceive totally, com-
pletely only when the mind is
wholly quiet. So the profes-
sionals, the teachers, the gu-
rus say you must sit in a cer-
tain posture, control your
thought, breathe properly,
and so on.” This will lead one
to handle contradicting emo-
tions. Do not take your
breathing for granted, it’s
magical when you know how
to breathe right. Taking the
time to breathe mindfully
and deeply for a few minutes
or so can already help you to
see an improvement without
even moving a muscle. The
power of being still is just as
important as the power of
movement. Children need to
be active but also they need
mindful emotional clarity
.

Over time, yoga can help
you to regain that sense of
control and allow your
mind and your body to
sharpen each other, which
in turn gives you the tools
to better manage those
moments when you feel
anxious over a situation,
you can’t control be it
school assignment pressure
or a feeling of isolation.
Sometimes our biggest
enemy is our own mind, so
give yourself some time to
relax your mind and focus
on yourself. It is doing
more good for your body
than you know. On this
international day of yoga
let’s embark on this self-
fulfilling journey of yoga
and peaceful joy

New Delhi : Barring a
few exceptions in India,
strong leaders do not
contest the Presidential
elections, especially not
from the opposition
parties. Rarely has it
happened that a person
of strong political back-
ground and engaged in
active politics from the
opposition has contest-
ed the election of the
President. Usually, it is
considered that any
leader from the opposi-
tion would loose the
election, so no towering
or senior leader is ready
to fight these elections.
A leader who fights for
a Rajya Sabha ticket,
even if he or she is
asked to contest the
election of the Presi-
dent, they would refuse.
They would rather
agree to contest the
election of Lok Sabha
or State Assembly by
taking the risk of losing
but would not want to
contest the election of
the President.
This is the reason
why opposition parties
have to put forward the
names of ‘spent’ leaders
or non-political persons.
This time also leaders
like Sharad Pawar and
HD Deve Gowda have
refused to contest the
presidential election.
Bihar Chief Minister
Nitish Kumar’s name
was speculated to be in
the Presidential race,
however, the manner in
which he gave a clarifi-
cation, made people feel
that if he didnt clarify,
he may have been
caught and fielded force-
fully for the Presidential
election! If the opposi-
tion parties had fielded
a strong leader and then
even if the presidential
election would have
been ‘pre-decided’, at
least the fight would
have been good.
This is the first time
the Shiv Sena has raised
this point on behalf of
the opposition parties. It
hasrejectedtheproposal
to name both Gopal
Krishna Gandhi and Fa-
rooq Abdullah by writ-
ing an editorial in its
mouthpiece ‘Saamana’,
terming both of them as
‘weak candidates’. Shiv
Sena has stressed on the
need to field a strong
leader from the opposi-
tion side and even many
other opposition parties
want a real fight instead
of a symbolic fight. The
opposition knows that af-
ter fighting unitedly
, 30 to
35%of thevoteswillgoto
itscandidate.Despitethis,
if an active and strong
leader is fielded, he will
roam around the country
and create a political at-
mosphere.
If we talk about the
last 30 years, the only re-
nowned politian with a
respectablepublicstand-
ing had been Bhairon
Singh Shekhawat, who
contested the Presiden-
tialelection.However,he
too had retired from ac-
tive politics and contest-
ed the presidential elec-
tion after being the VP
forfiveyears.Apartfrom
him, the opposition has
given a symbolic candi-
date every time. Meira
Kumar was the candi-
date in the last election
i.e. 2017 and PA Sangma
contested in the 2012
elections. Shekhawat
had fought in 2007. In
2002, the opposition sup-
ported APJ Abdul Kal-
am, but the Left had
fieldedCaptainLakshmi
Sehgal. Before that in
1997 also the opposition
had supported KR
Narayanan, yet Shiv
Sena had fielded TN Se-
shan. Before that, in
1992, George Swale was
the opposition’s candi-
date. The story of presi-
dentialcandidatesof the
party‘in-power’isnodif-
ferent. In the last 30 yrs,
except Pranab Mukher-
jee, all other ‘govern-
ment’ candidates were
also retired politicians
or non-politicians.

New Delhi (PTI): The
Employees’ State Insur-
ance Corporation
(ESIC) on Sunday de-
cided its health insur-
ance scheme ESI will be
implemented through-
out the country by the
end of 2022.
Presently, the Em-
ployees’ State Insur-
ance (ESI) Scheme is
fully implemented in
443 districts and par-
tially implemented in
153 districts. A total of
148 districts are not cov-
ered under the ESI
Scheme. The ESIC, un-
der the chairmanship
of Minister of Labour
and Employment Bhu-
pender Yadav, in its
188th meeting held on
Sunday has taken sig-
nificant decisions to
augment the medical
care and service deliv-
ery mechanism across
the country, a labour
ministry statement
said.
It has been decided
that the ESI Scheme
will be implemented in
the entire country by
the end of 2022, it add-
ed. By the end of the
year, the districts which
are partially covered
and not covered under
the scheme will be fully
brought under the am-
bit of the ESI Scheme,
the statement said. The
medical care services
will be provided
through establishing
new DCBOs (dispensa-
ry cum branch offices),
by empanelling mIMP
(Modified Insurance
Medical Practitioner)
and tie-up hospitals of
Ayushman Bharat
Pradhan Mantri Jan
Arogya Yojana (PM-
JAY).
Besides, the ESIC has
decided to set up 23 new
100-bedded hospitals
across the country
.
These include six
hospitals in Maharash-
tra at Palghar, Satara,
Pen, Jalgaon, Chakan
and Panvel; four in Har-
yana at Hisar, Sonepat,
Ambala and Rohatak;
two hospitals each in
Tamil Nadu, Uttar
Pradesh and Karnata-
ka. ESIC will also set up
one hospital each in
Andhra Pradesh,
Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gu-
jarat, Madhya Pradesh,
Odisha and West Ben-
gal.
Besides these hospi-
tals, five dispensaries at
62 places will also be
opened. Further, 48 dis-
pensaries in Maharash-
tra, 12 dispensaries in
Delhi and 2 dispensa-
ries in Haryana will be
opened.

BY YEAR END
New Delhi (PTI): A
combination of normal
rainfalls aiding bump-
er agriculture output
and the RBI further
hiking interest rates to
cut easy money in the
system hold key to
bringing down multi-
year high inflation trig-
gered by surging food
and fuel prices, econo-
mists said.
Although the gov-
ernment has room to
further reduce excise
duty on petroleum
products to contain in-
flation from the fiscal
side, emphasis will be
on monetary policy to
control price pres-
sures, they added.
While retail inflation
rose 7.04% in May year-
on-year, slightly down
from 95-month high of
7.79% in April, whole-
sale or WPI inflation
rose to a record high of
15.88% in May. Three-
fourth of the price rise
is coming from food
items and a normal
monsoon will help cool
it down as it will boost
production and replen-
ish stockpiles.
The RBI has already
raised interest rates by
90 basis points after in-
flation remained above
its 2-6% target band for
a fifth straight month
and is expected to hike
interest rates by anoth-
er 80 bps, they said.
For the common
man, the price hike is
drilling a hole in pock-
et. Edible oil prices,
which had been a ma-
jor factor contributing
to the inflation, have
started to ease a bit
with leading players
announcing some re-
duction. Economic af-
fairs secretary Ajay
Seth on June 16 said
inflation in India is
mainly because of high
energy and food prices
and hoped that it would
moderate in the com-
ing months. “We are all
aware that summer
months are difficult
months in terms of
vegetables and other
items,” he said. “High
crude prices are cer-
tainly a challenge and
whatever measures are
needed and feasible are
being taken.”
SP Global Ratings
economist Vishrut
Rana said higher glob-
al commodity prices
are a key driving factor
for inflation and the
outlook for food infla-
tion, which has a heavy
weightage in the over-
all CPI basket, will
depend on the mon-
soon – sufficient rains
will help agricultural
produce and help rein
in prices.

Selling diesel at `20-25
a litre below cost and
petrol at `14-18 per li-
tre below cost, as a re-
sult of a price freeze
despite soaring crude
rates is unsustainable,
an industry body rep-
resenting private fuel
retailers like Jio-bp
and Nayara Energy
has told the Oil Minis-
try and has sought its
intervention to create
a viable investment
environment.
On June 10, the Fed-
eration of Indian Pe-
troleum Industry,
which besides private
fuel retailers also
counts state-owned
firms such as IOC,
BPCL and HPCL as its
members, wrote to the
Petroleum Ministry
saying losses on petrol
and diesel will limit
further investments
in retailing business.
“With effect from
March 22, 2022, the re-
tail selling prices were
revised on 14 occa-
sions at an average of
80 paise per litre per
day, leading to an over-
all increase of `10 per
litre on both petrol
and diesel.
“However, the un-
der-recoveries (losses)
continue to be very
high in a range of Rs
20-25 per litre for die-
sel and `14-18 per litre
for petrol,” FIPI direc-
tor general Gurmeet
Singh wrote.
“This resulted in
rapid diversion of
bulk diesel (direct con-
sumers) sales to retail
outlets amounting to
widening of losses in-
curred by private fuel
retailing companies,”

New Delhi (PTI): As
many as 428 infrastruc-
ture projects, each en-

`150 crore or more, have
been hit by cost over-

a report.
According to the
Ministry of Statistics
and Programme Imple-

itors infrastructure
projects of `150 crore
and above, out of 1,559
projects, 428 projects
reported cost overruns
and as many as 647 pro-
jects were delayed.
“Total original cost
of implementation of
the 1559 projects was
`21,73,907.11 crore and
their anticipated com-
pletion cost is likely to
be `26,72,201.26 crore,
which reflects overall
cost overruns of
`4,98,294.15 crore
(22.92% of original
cost),” the ministry’s
latest report for April
2022 said.
According to the re-
port, the expenditure
incurred on these pro-
jects till April 2022 was
`13,50,610.98 crore,
which was 50.54% of
their anticipated cost.
However, the number
of delayed projects de-
creases to 525 if the de-
lay is calculated on the
basis of latest schedule
of completion.
Further, for 619 pro-
jects neither the year of
commissioning nor the

The platform,

investments in terms
of “hundreds of

“We have big aspi-
rations and want to
ensure we are achiev-
ing high double-digit

this year as well,”
ZEE5 chief business
officer Manish Kalra
said. In FY22, ZEE5’s
revenue stood at
`549.6 crore, up 31%
from `419.1 crore in
the previous fiscal.
New Delhi (PTI):
The Finance Minis-
try has asked govern-
ment employees to
opt for ‘cheapest fare
available’ on their
entitled travel class
and book air tickets
at least three weeks
prior to their date of
travel for tours and
LTC, as it looks to cut
down on unneces-
sary expenditure.
The Ministry further
said that employees
should book only one
ticket for each leg of
intended travel,
make bookings even
if approval of the
tour programme is
under process and
also avoid “unneces-
sary cancellations”.
Any booking made
within less than 72
hours of intended

cancellation made
less than 24 hours be-
fore intended travel
will require the sub-
mission of self-de-
clared justification
by the employee, as

structions regarding
booking of air tick-
ets on the govt ac-
count.

“Relentless selling by

factors for the market,”

New Delhi (PTI): Ag-
gressive rate hike by
the US Federal Re-
serve, coupled with el-
evated inflation and
high valuation of equi-
ties continued to keep
foreign investors at
bay from the Indian
stock market as they
pulled out `31,430 crore
in this month so far.
With this, net out-
flow by Foreign Portfo-
lio Investors (FPIs)
from equities reached
`1.98 lakh crore so far
in 2022, data with de-
positories showed.
Going forward, For-

litical risk, rising in-
flation, tightening of
monetary policy by

others, Shrikant Chou-

According to the
data, foreign investors

New Delhi: India on

attack on a gurdwara in
Kabul, government
sources said on Sunday
.
The electronic visas
have been given “on pri-

the Ministry of Home
Affairs, they said.
The Islamic State (IS)
terrorist group has
claimed responsibility
for the attack on the gur-
dwara in Afghanistan’s
capital that killed two
persons, including one
Sikh community mem-
ber, calling it “an act of
support”fortheProphet.
Several blasts tore
through Gurdwara
Karte Parwan in Kabul’s
Bagh-e Bala neighbour-
hood on Saturday while
Afghan security person-
nel thwarted a bigger
tragedy by stopping an
explosive-laden vehicle
from reaching the place

ity community
.
“More than 100 Af-
ghan Sikhs and Hindus
have been granted e-vi-
sas by India, on priority,
post the attack on gu-
rudwara in Kabul, a
source said.
The dreaded terror
group said one of its
fighters “penetrated a
temple for Hindu and
Sikh polytheists” in Ka-
bul, after killing the
guard, and opened fire
on the worshippers in-
side with his machine
gun and hand grenades.
It was the latest target-

Colombo (PTI): Sri
Lanka will resume
flights from the north-
ern Jaffna peninsula
to India next month,
Aviation Minister Ni-
mal Siripala de Silva
has said, asserting
that the move would
support the country’s
tourism industry and
help in easing the eco-
nomic crisis.
The Sri Lanka
Tourism Develop-
ment Authority plans
to attract 800,000 tour-
ists during the rest of
the year.
“The northern Jaff-
na peninsula’s Palaly
airport is to resume
flights to India from
next month,” Aviation
Minister Nimal Siri-
pala de Silva said on
Saturday
. However, he
did not specify a date.
Resuming the
flights would improve
tourism and help the
country in the current
dollar crisis,” de Silva
said after inspecting
the airport.
The present run-
way can only accom-
modate 75-seater
flights and therefore
needs to be extended,
he said.
He hoped for Indian
assistance for runway
improvements.
The airport was
named the Jaffna in-
ternational airport in
October 2019. The first
international flight to
land there was from
Chennai.
The 2019 redevelop-
ment of the airport
was funded by both Sri
Lanka and India.
Earlier, India’s Alli-
ance Air conducted
three weekly flights
from Chennai to Pala-
ly. However, after a
government change in
Sri Lanka in Novem-
ber 2019, the flight op-
erations were halted.
The economic crisis
has prompted an acute
shortage of essential
items like food, medi-
cine, cooking gas and
other fuel, toilet paper,
and even matches,
with Sri Lankans be-
ing forced to wait in
lines lasting hours
outside stores to buy
fuel and cooking gas.

They were sent to La-
hore on their way to the
Wagah border where
they will be handed over
to the Indian authori-

Muhammad Irshad said
the fishermen were re-
leased on the order of
the federal government.
They were in jail for
the last five years. To-
day, they were handed
over to the Edhi trust
which will be responsi-
ble for taking them to
Lahore under police es-
cort, he said.
Irshad said the fisher-
men were arrested by
the Maritime Security
Force in June 2018 and
then jailed for fishing il-

ritorial waters. Faisal
Edhi, who heads the wel-
fare foundation, said all
expenses and travelling
of the Indian fishermen

TOP TWEETS F iolent protests by Agniveers have al- ready done a lot of damage to govern- ment property be- sides causing inconvenience to the people. The anger of Agniveer aspirants was justi- fied, but certainly not the widespread arson and dam- age to property . The extent of violence has been such that an impression has been cre- ated about protesters not be- ing aspirants for jobs in the armed forces. It is now be- lieved that other troublemak- ers have tried to take advan- tage of the movement. The crackdown and police cases on the agitators that followed the violence would leave the angry youth facing a dark al- ley . Their entry in the defence forces is as good as blocked. The government is reach- ing out to the angry youth by announcing concessions in the scheme. Even as Defence Minister Rajnath Singh held another meeting with the three Services chiefs on Sun- day, the government prom- ised a 10 percent job quota for Agniveers in paramilitary forces to address employment concerns of the youth at the end of four years. The reser- vationwillalsobeprovidedin Coast Guard, the 16 defence public sector undertakings and defence civilian posts. Union Home Minister’s said in a tweet that Agniveers will be given three-year age relax- ation beyond the prescribed upper age limit for recruit- mentinCentralArmedPolice Force and Assam Rifles. The angry youth must look at these developments and prepare for the recruitment process. Eschewing violence for some stability in career, even if it is short lived, is what the youth must seri- ously consider. The govern- ment may not be willing to give in to pressure. VIOLENCE WILL NOT WORK FOR YOUTH Even as Defence Minister held another meeting with the three Services Chiefs on Sunday, govt promised a 10 per cent job quota for Agniveers in paramilitary forces to address employment concerns of youth at end of 4 years V Reacting Mindfully! INTERNATIONAL YOGA DAY — JUNE 21 ith the moment ushering on 21st June as International Yoga Day, it is the time to sit back and reflect and acknowl- edge that we all experience suffering, discontent, or dis- satisfaction. Acceding this predicament is the first step towards understanding the painful experience which is more relevant than ever be- fore in the current excruciat- ing times that we all are ex- periencing. With everything that is currently going on in the world, our stress levels may likely be heightened. For some people, the uncer- tainty of this time causes a lot of anxiety, especially the younger segment such as small children and teenag- ers. It’s important to realize and practice healthy ways of de-stressing as we learn how to deal with normal everyday life. While the world is gasp- ing in bewilderment to save itself from the agonizing Ef- fects of home -office and in- creasing stress on the young- er generation which seem rhapsodical, looking back may hand us an enshrined solution in the form of yoga which may equip us to fight this battle. International Yoga day is a reminder that from the an- cient scripture to the Middle Ages until the very recent studies which are supported by scientific evidence, it is becoming very apparent that yoga is not only the strength- ening of the body but also stabilizing the mind and heart through various breathing techniques. It is one form of physical exercise that works in synchroniza- tion with the mind and soul. There is ample literature available on yoga not only in India but also across Europe. What makes yoga exclu- sive is, it’s being inclusive. People of all age groups, na- tionalities, and social back- grounds can practice it be- cause yoga is accessible to all. There are various kinds of yoga practices, so it’s pos- sible for anyone to start. Size and fitness levels don’t mat- ter, there are modifications for every yoga pose. Apart from the real physical effect of stress and anxiety on our younger population, the men- tal health implications of this can be felt just as strong- ly. For those already suffer- ing from mental health con- ditions or anxiety, the added stress can feel overwhelming and unmanageable. Anxiety thrives on uncertainty and being in a constant state of waiting for something to hap- pen will only increase this. Anxiety and the manner in which we breathe are co- joint. The principles of yoga offer a wonderful, logical ex- planation to regulate stress. Studies have shown how, if practiced in moderation from an early age, yoga teach- es you to train your brain for healthy emotional outlets and handle stress which seem almost crucial to teen- agers. Breathing and yoga are of- tentimes associated with the same umbrella. While both activities encourage mind- fulness, health, and relaxa- tion. Yoga can get intense and serve as a workout de- pending on the level. Breath- ing, however, is effortless and can be practiced everywhere with being a little mindful. Often, when we are in a stressful situation, we get anxious and do not give our minds a chance to think logi- cally. This is the situation where mostly the people of age group between 12 to 20 react frantically to the situa- tion from day to day life. Breathing rightfully sup- ports our emotional health by stamping out the informa- tion overload that we all ex- perience daily. It allows us a clean space in our mind which in turn can cast us to- wards positivity . We not only feel revamped but we also become mindful of people and situations which lead us to a deep consciousness of life -force. Which the youth needs to invest in the future. Yoga fosters empathy and larger understanding, and it is worth observing that sym- pathy and receptivity lie at the very root of yoga’s first principle- helping others by helping oneself. Yoga practice can help young people, especially stu- dents to develop a non-impul- sive reaction to events. As Krishnamurti states “You can perceive totally, com- pletely only when the mind is wholly quiet. So the profes- sionals, the teachers, the gu- rus say you must sit in a cer- tain posture, control your thought, breathe properly, and so on.” This will lead one to handle contradicting emo- tions. Do not take your breathing for granted, it’s magical when you know how to breathe right. Taking the time to breathe mindfully and deeply for a few minutes or so can already help you to see an improvement without even moving a muscle. The power of being still is just as important as the power of movement. Children need to be active but also they need mindful emotional clarity . THE VIEWS EXPRESSED BY THE AUTHOR ARE PERSONAL W Over time, yoga can help you to regain that sense of control and allow your mind and your body to sharpen each other, which in turn gives you the tools to better manage those moments when you feel anxious over a situation, you can’t control be it school assignment pressure or a feeling of isolation. Sometimes our biggest enemy is our own mind, so give yourself some time to relax your mind and focus on yourself. It is doing more good for your body than you know. On this international day of yoga let’s embark on this self- fulfilling journey of yoga and peaceful joy International Yoga day is a reminder that from the ancient scripture to the Middle Ages until the very recent studies which are supported by scientific evidence, it is becoming very apparent that yoga is not only the strengthening of the body but also stabilizing the mind and heart through various breathing techniques DR JYOTI JOSHI The writer is a soft skill, yoga trainer, business coach and English language instructor in Germany, Europe

INDIA NEW DELHI | MONDAY, JUNE 20, 2022 05 www.firstindia.co.in I www.firstindia.co.in/epapers/delhi I twitter.com/thefirstindia I facebook.com/thefirstindia I instagram.com/thefirstindia Mahesh Sharma New Delhi : Barring a few exceptions in India, strong leaders do not contest the Presidential elections, especially not from the opposition parties. Rarely has it happened that a person of strong political back- ground and engaged in active politics from the opposition has contest- ed the election of the President. Usually, it is considered that any leader from the opposi- tion would loose the election, so no towering or senior leader is ready to fight these elections. A leader who fights for a Rajya Sabha ticket, even if he or she is asked to contest the election of the Presi- dent, they would refuse. They would rather agree to contest the election of Lok Sabha or State Assembly by taking the risk of losing but would not want to contest the election of the President. This is the reason why opposition parties have to put forward the names of ‘spent’ leaders or non-political persons. This time also leaders like Sharad Pawar and HD Deve Gowda have refused to contest the presidential election. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s name was speculated to be in the Presidential race, however, the manner in which he gave a clarifi- cation, made people feel that if he didnt clarify, he may have been caught and fielded force- fully for the Presidential election! If the opposi- tion parties had fielded a strong leader and then even if the presidential election would have been ‘pre-decided’, at least the fight would have been good. This is the first time the Shiv Sena has raised this point on behalf of the opposition parties. It hasrejectedtheproposal to name both Gopal Krishna Gandhi and Fa- rooq Abdullah by writ- ing an editorial in its mouthpiece ‘Saamana’, terming both of them as ‘weak candidates’. Shiv Sena has stressed on the need to field a strong leader from the opposi- tion side and even many other opposition parties want a real fight instead of a symbolic fight. The opposition knows that af- ter fighting unitedly , 30 to 35%of thevoteswillgoto itscandidate.Despitethis, if an active and strong leader is fielded, he will roam around the country and create a political at- mosphere. If we talk about the last 30 years, the only re- nowned politian with a respectablepublicstand- ing had been Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, who contested the Presiden- tialelection. However,he too had retired from ac- tive politics and contest- ed the presidential elec- tion after being the VP forfiveyears.Apartfrom him, the opposition has given a symbolic candi- date every time. Meira Kumar was the candi- date in the last election i.e. 2017 and PA Sangma contested in the 2012 elections. Shekhawat had fought in 2007. In 2002, the opposition sup- ported APJ Abdul Kal- am, but the Left had fieldedCaptainLakshmi Sehgal. Before that in 1997 also the opposition had supported KR Narayanan, yet Shiv Sena had fielded TN Se- shan. Before that, in 1992, George Swale was the opposition’s candi- date. The story of presi- dentialcandidatesof the party‘in-power’isnodif- ferent. In the last 30 yrs, except Pranab Mukher- jee, all other ‘govern- ment’ candidates were also retired politicians or non-politicians. WHY DONT STRONG LEADERS CONTEST PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS? Presently, the Em- ployees’ State Insur- ance (ESI) Scheme is fully implemented in 443 districts and par- tially implemented in 153 districts. A total of 148 districts are not cov- ered under the ESI Scheme. The ESIC, un- der the chairmanship of Minister of Labour and Employment Bhu- pender Yadav, in its 188th meeting held on Sunday has taken sig- nificant decisions to augment the medical care and service deliv- ery mechanism across the country, a labour ministry statement said. It has been decided that the ESI Scheme will be implemented in the entire country by the end of 2022, it add- ed. By the end of the year, the districts which are partially covered and not covered under the scheme will be fully brought under the am- bit of the ESI Scheme, the statement said. The medical care services will be provided through establishing new DCBOs (dispensa- ry cum branch offices), by empanelling mIMP (Modified Insurance Medical Practitioner) and tie-up hospitals of Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM- JAY). Besides, the ESIC has decided to set up 23 new 100-bedded hospitals across the country . These include six hospitals in Maharash- tra at Palghar, Satara, Pen, Jalgaon, Chakan and Panvel; four in Har- yana at Hisar, Sonepat, Ambala and Rohatak; two hospitals each in Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and Karnata- ka. ESIC will also set up one hospital each in Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gu- jarat, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and West Ben- gal. Besides these hospi- tals, five dispensaries at 62 places will also be opened. Further, 48 dis- pensaries in Maharash- tra, 12 dispensaries in Delhi and 2 dispensa- ries in Haryana will be opened. ESIC to cover entire India under ESI Scheme BY YEAR END New Delhi (PTI): A combination of normal rainfalls aiding bump- er agriculture output and the RBI further hiking interest rates to cut easy money in the system hold key to bringing down multi- year high inflation trig- gered by surging food and fuel prices, econo- mists said. Although the gov- ernment has room to further reduce excise duty on petroleum products to contain in- flation from the fiscal side, emphasis will be on monetary policy to control price pres- sures, they added. While retail inflation rose 7.04% in May year- on-year, slightly down from 95-month high of 7.79% in April, whole- sale or WPI inflation rose to a record high of 15.88% in May. Three- fourth of the price rise is coming from food items and a normal monsoon will help cool it down as it will boost production and replen- ish stockpiles. The RBI has already raised interest rates by 90 basis points after in- flation remained above its 2-6% target band for a fifth straight month and is expected to hike interest rates by anoth- er 80 bps, they said. For the common man, the price hike is drilling a hole in pock- et. Edible oil prices, which had been a ma- jor factor contributing to the inflation, have started to ease a bit with leading players announcing some re- duction. Economic af- fairs secretary Ajay Seth on June 16 said inflation in India is mainly because of high energy and food prices and hoped that it would moderate in the com- ing months. “We are all aware that summer months are difficult months in terms of vegetables and other items,” he said. “High crude prices are cer- tainly a challenge and whatever measures are needed and feasible are being taken.” SP Global Ratings economist Vishrut Rana said higher glob- al commodity prices are a key driving factor for inflation and the outlook for food infla- tion, which has a heavy weightage in the over- all CPI basket, will depend on the mon- soon – sufficient rains will help agricultural produce and help rein in prices. Sellingfuelsatloss: Pvtretailerstogovt New Delhi (PTI): Selling diesel at `20-25 a litre below cost and petrol at `14-18 per li- tre below cost, as a re- sult of a price freeze despite soaring crude rates is unsustainable, an industry body rep- resenting private fuel retailers like Jio-bp and Nayara Energy has told the Oil Minis- try and has sought its intervention to create a viable investment environment. On June 10, the Fed- eration of Indian Pe- troleum Industry, which besides private fuel retailers also counts state-owned firms such as IOC, BPCL and HPCL as its members, wrote to the Petroleum Ministry saying losses on petrol and diesel will limit further investments in retailing business. “With effect from March 22, 2022, the re- tail selling prices were revised on 14 occa- sions at an average of 80 paise per litre per day, leading to an over- all increase of `10 per litre on both petrol and diesel. “However, the un- der-recoveries (losses) continue to be very high in a range of Rs 20-25 per litre for die- sel and `14-18 per litre for petrol,” FIPI direc- tor general Gurmeet Singh wrote. “This resulted in rapid diversion of bulk diesel (direct con- sumers) sales to retail outlets amounting to widening of losses in- curred by private fuel retailing companies,” Federation of Indian Petroleum Industry wrote. DoT’s licencing reforms report to submitted by month-end New Delhi (PTI): The telecom department is moving ahead in full stream towards usher- ing the next round of reforms in the sector and a committee, set up to make sugges- tions on licencing re- forms, is expected to submit its report to the Department by the month-end, a senior of- ficial said. Even as hec- tic preparations are on in the DoT for the up- coming spectrum auc- tions, work on the sec- ond set of reforms is going on in parallel. The reforms span multiple areas includ- ing licencing, wireless WPC, satellite telepho- ny, and other areas. A DoT committee headed by Member Technology is deliber- ating on the licencing terms and conditions reforms, and is expect- ed to submit its report by the month end, fol- lowing which DoT will assess which measures involve reference to TRAI. 428 INFRA PROJECTS SHOW COST OVERRUNS OF `4.98 LAKH CRORE New Delhi (PTI): As many as 428 infrastruc- ture projects, each en- tailing an investment of `150 crore or more, have been hit by cost over- runs of more than `4.98 lakh crore, according to a report. According to the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Imple- mentation, which mon- itors infrastructure projects of `150 crore and above, out of 1,559 projects, 428 projects reported cost overruns and as many as 647 pro- jects were delayed. “Total original cost of implementation of the 1559 projects was `21,73,907.11 crore and their anticipated com- pletion cost is likely to be `26,72,201.26 crore, which reflects overall cost overruns of `4,98,294.15 crore (22.92% of original cost),” the ministry’s latest report for April 2022 said. According to the re- port, the expenditure incurred on these pro- jects till April 2022 was `13,50,610.98 crore, which was 50.54% of their anticipated cost. The platform, which had recently unveiled 11 original series in Telugu as part of its strategy to cater to different lan- guages in the coun- try, is also making investments in terms of “hundreds of crores” this year for content creation. “We have big aspi- rations and want to ensure we are achiev- ing high double-digit or triple-digit growth this year as well,” ZEE5 chief business officer Manish Kalra said. In FY22, ZEE5’s revenue stood at `549.6 crore, up 31% from `419.1 crore in the previous fiscal. New Delhi (PTI): The Finance Minis- try has asked govern- ment employees to opt for ‘cheapest fare available’ on their entitled travel class and book air tickets at least three weeks prior to their date of travel for tours and LTC, as it looks to cut down on unneces- sary expenditure. The Ministry further said that employees should book only one ticket for each leg of intended travel, make bookings even if approval of the tour programme is under process and also avoid “unneces- sary cancellations”. Any booking made within less than 72 hours of intended travel on tour or any cancellation made less than 24 hours be- fore intended travel will require the sub- mission of self-de- clared justification by the employee, as per the modified in- structions regarding booking of air tick- ets on the govt ac- count. ‘Normal monsoon, interest rate cut key to bring down inflation’ EMPHASIS WILL BE ON MONETARY POLICY TO CONTROL PRICE PRESSURES Canara Bank to improve bottom line New Delhi (PTI): Recording over two-fold jump in its net profit in fis- cal year ended March 2022, Ca- nara Bank aims to improve its bot- tom line further with balanced fo- cus on advances to retail, big and small businesses, coupled with greater focus on digitisation. Progress of monsoon would also be monitored, they added. “Relentless selling by FIIs is a key concern for the Indian markets. Ru- pee movement and de- velopment of monsoon will be other important factors for the market,” said Santosh Meena. “In absence of any ma- jor domestic event, global cues will contin- ue to dictate the trend. Participants will also be eyeing COVID cases trend and progress of monsoon,” Ajit Mishra, VP - Research said. With this, net out- flow by Foreign Portfo- lio Investors (FPIs) from equities reached `1.98 lakh crore so far in 2022, data with de- positories showed. According to the data, foreign investors withdrew a net amount of `31,430 crore from equities in the month of June (till 17th). Though on paper there are 14 candi- dates in the fray, the contest is only be- tween the YSRC and the BJP . Going by tra- dition, where the ri- val party does not put up its candidate in the event of death of a sitting legislature, the Telugu Desam opted out of the by- poll contest. While the BJP could bank on its po- litical ally Jana Se- na’s backing, it might also benefit from the tacit support of TDP, given the caste and other equations in the constituency . The by-election for the Assembly seat has been caused due to the death of sitting legislator and then Industries Minister Mekapati Goutham Reddy in February this year. Goutham Reddy won the Atmakuru seat twice successive- ly in 2014 and 2019, though his majority dipped from 31,412 to 22,276. His younger brother and YSRC nominee Mekapati Vikram Reddy is making a political de- but through the by- poll. Though hailing from a political fami- ly his father Rajamo- han Reddy was a for- mer MP Vikram is considered a political novice but the ruling partyfeelsthesympa- thy’ factor will work in his favour. There is enormous goodwill for the Me- kapati family in At- makuru. Goutham Reddy contributed significantly to the constituency devel- opment, establishing an industrial park in 200 acres and creat- ing hundreds of jobs for the local youth. The polling is due on June 23. Addressing press conference here She said Guddu Jamali, who has won MLA elec- tion several times, had always worked above caste and communal consideration. Mayawa- ti said Guddu Jamali had also been with the people of Azamgarh at the time of adversities. She said the people have now got an op- portunity to ensure the victory of BSP and expose the Samajwadi Party and BJP nexus in the constituency. She said Jamali’s win would prove that only BSP had capacity to de- feat BJP. The BSP, while refrain- ing from joining contest in Rampur, has fielded a formidable candidate Guddu Jamali with the hope to make dent into SP’s Muslim electorate. Colombo (PTI): Sri Lanka will resume flights from the north- ern Jaffna peninsula to India next month, Aviation Minister Ni- mal Siripala de Silva has said, asserting that the move would support the country’s tourism industry and help in easing the eco- nomic crisis. The Sri Lanka Tourism Develop- ment Authority plans to attract 800,000 tour- ists during the rest of the year. “The northern Jaff- na peninsula’s Palaly airport is to resume flights to India from next month,” Aviation Minister Nimal Siri- pala de Silva said on Saturday . However, he did not specify a date. Resuming the flights would improve tourism and help the country in the current dollar crisis,” de Silva said after inspecting the airport. The present run- way can only accom- modate 75-seater flights and therefore needs to be extended, he said. He hoped for Indian assistance for runway improvements. The airport was named the Jaffna in- ternational airport in October 2019. The first international flight to land there was from Chennai. The 2019 redevelop- ment of the airport was funded by both Sri Lanka and India. Earlier, India’s Alli- ance Air conducted three weekly flights from Chennai to Pala- ly. However, after a government change in Sri Lanka in Novem- ber 2019, the flight op- erations were halted. The economic crisis has prompted an acute shortage of essential items like food, medi- cine, cooking gas and other fuel, toilet paper, and even matches, with Sri Lankans be- ing forced to wait in lines lasting hours outside stores to buy fuel and cooking gas.
