1. Doireann McCombe, graduate of MSc in Business & Information Technology
I knew that I wanted a job in business and looked at the MSc in Business & Information
Techonology as a way into the business world. I had an undergraduate bachelor degree in Irish
and Spanish so the MSc was something completely different. Lucky for me it was a part-time
course. I was able to continue with my work and undertake a masters at the weekend and in the
evenings.
I enjoyed the small class that I was in and because of this we were all able to get to know each
other very well. There were a mixture of people doing the MSc, people from all over the
country, people with different agegroups, each with different experiences as well as our good
and bad traits.

2. When the course was almost finished I got a job as a manager with Ethiopiaid charity. This was
a small charity with only two employed in each branch. I was in charge of the Irish branch. It
was a brilliant job and I got to put what I learned in the MSc into practice – such as
ProjectManagement, Finance and Marketing. As well as this, I was able to write my thesis
based on my personal experiences working with the charity. I did my thesis on the use of social
media in the non for profit sectors to create and develop relationships with donators.
It was because of the business side of the course that I decided to do the MSc but it also
increased my interest in information technology and this relates directly to the job that I am
doing at the moment. Accenture works with other organisations to help them be more effective
in their business. There are a lot of opportunities with this job due to the wide clientele that
Accenture has. At present, I am working on a project based at the client’s site ie. in a large
insurance company but who knows where I will be based for the next project.
The MSc was definitely a great help to me to get this job. It was challenging doing a part-time
course and working every day but it was definitely worth it at the end.
