1. Úna-Minh Caomhánach, graduate of BA Irish and Journalism 2012
I did my Irish and journalism degree with Fiontar from 2009-2012. I am from Kerry
and therefore it was a long trip from Tralee to Dublin (or ‘The Big Smoke’ as they call
it!)
It was a very short course in fairness and a lot was covered from modules to practical
work. I picked this course for my love of the Irish language and on the otherhand my
biggest love was journalism.
This course gave me the chance to study these two subjects. I was able to learn Irish
and I had the opportunity to write, be on the radio and edit without a sweat. Fiontar
provided us with the facilities to do this.
2. I enjoyed university live but the for the majority of my time spent in university I
wanted to create a work life for myself in Ireland as a journalist and expert of social
media.
I am currently working as a journalist with worldirish.com, one of the most important
organisations today.. I write about five stories every day for Irish people in Ireland
and abroad. I deal with people/organisations/clubs around the world – for example,
recently I did an interview with the man in charge if the ‘St. Patrick’s Day Ball’ in
Sydney and with the man who created ‘Wellington Currach Club’ in New Zealand. My
stories are mostly through English, but I always have the opportunity to write an
article in Irish. As well as this, every day I provide the ‘Term of the Day’ on the
website and audiences can see it. I really enjoy my job and I am very thankful for the
skills I learned in Fiontar. DCU.
