Look the story…
Did you understand what happened?.
Lets summarize…
Direct speech
- Exact words with quotation marks
He said ´you play the guitar´
Indirect speech
- Add THAT
- Change the TENSE according the situation
- Don´t use quotation marks
He said that you played the guitar
Change the TENSE according the
situation
 In Indirect speech, we learned that the sentences
changes in the present form to the past form.
- The teacher said ¨ he need to finish the homework ¨
- The teacher said that he needed to finish the
homework
But what abour other tenses?...
The importance is always in the
tense of the direct speech…
 We need to look always the tense which the direct
speech happens. The literal thing that someone said.
- ¨Mark is travelling to New York¨ She said
in this situation, the message is in PRESENT
CONTINUOS. So the indirect speech must be in PAST
CONTINUOUS
She said that Mark was travelling to new york.
Quick Reminder…
 Present continuous: present situation which
happens in a continuous time.
- Emily is working all night.
[[verb to be verb /ING]]
 Past continuous: past situation which happened in a
continuous time
- Emily was working all night.
[[verb to be verb /ING]]
past
verb to be
AM IS ARE
verb to be
WAS WERE
Other examples ….
DIRECT SPEECH.
You told me ¨ the concert is starting¨
INDIRECT SPEECH
You told me that the concert was starting
Other examples ….
DIRECT SPEECH.
The president said ¨ people are waiting for changes ¨
INDIRECT SPEECH
The president said that people were waiting for changes
The importance is always in the
tense of the direct speech…
 Now we need to understand the transformation of a
direct speech sentence in PAST..
- ¨Mark DROVE for 5 days¨ My mom told me
in this situation, the message is in PAST SIMPLE. So
the indirect speech must be in PAST PERFECT
My mom told me that Mark had driven for 5 days.
Quick Reminder…
 Past simple: past situation.
- Emily worked all night.
[[verb in past ]]
 Past perfect: past situation which happened before
another past situation
- Emily had worked all night.
[[aux have in past verb in participle]]
Other examples ….
DIRECT SPEECH.
He said “ students completed the test”
INDIRECT SPEECH
He said that students had completed the test.
Other examples ….
DIRECT SPEECH.
Peter told us “ Messi was the best football player”
INDIRECT SPEECH
Peter told us that Messi had been the best football player.
