Laser treatment a new dimension in denim washing
Denim washing is an aesthetic finish that is imparted to fabric to improve the softness and comfort of the fabric. In addition, the fabric achieves a different look such as a faded or worn-out appearance, seam puckering, de-pilling, crinkles, hairiness etc.
Now-a-days denim wash is much popular both dry and wet washing process. According to the fashion and appearance, there include new washing process and technology such as 3D or laser techniques.

3. Introduction
Denim washing is an aesthetic finish that is imparted to fabric to improve the softness and comfort
of the fabric. In addition, the fabric achieves a different look such as a faded or worn-out
appearance, seam puckering, de-pilling, crinkles, hairiness etc.
Now-a-days denim wash is much popular both dry and wet washing process. According to the
fashion and appearance, there include new washing process and technology such as 3D or laser
techniques.
4. What is Laser?
A laser system generates monochromatic, coherent
photons in a low-divergent beam. As
monochromatic, the light is of a single color.
As coherent, all the emissions originate from a stable
oscillator with a uniform constant frequency and
have the same wavelength.
6. Impact of lasers to make ‘greener’denim
industry in Bangladesh
The readymade garment sector is the driving force of the Bangladeshi economy,
It will have to make major changes to make sure that growth is sustainable.
Before introducing laser huge number of chemical required for a average pair of blue jeans but
these designs can also be created using laser technology, and this would reduce chemical usage by
about 20% to 30%
Chemical usage has a direct impact on the amount of water needed to make the jeans, as they
have to be washed afterwards to remove the chemicals.
The wastewater generated from such processes has had a catastrophic impact on the
environment, creating a “water pollution disaster” leading to high costs to public health,
agriculture and fisheries.
7. Uses of laser in denim sector
The popular uses of lasers are
◦ Laser Marking (Only the surface of the fabric is processed, fading)
◦ Laser Engraving (Controlled cutting to a depth)
◦ Laser Welding (A molten material joins or welds two or more layers of fabric
together),
◦ Laser Cutting (Cutting through a fabric).
Among these Lasers, fading (Marking) is a popular dry process for
denim now a day.
8. Mechanism of laser fading
The laser works by creating extensive heat within the
focused region.
The target material melt rapidly by absorbed laser
energy.
Some molten liquid tries to move due to surface
tension of liquid.
Remaining liquid heats very rapidly, boiling and
releasing vapours another phase (convert liquid to
gas)
10. Advantages of laser fading
Faster process compared to the conventional
dry processes.
Suitable for wide range of material.
Comparatively less strength loss than other
mechanical fading.
Environment friendly.
Zero water waste.
Requires no chemical.
Less manpower required.
11. Disadvantages of laser fading
Initial investment is very high
Skilled operator is needed
Producing natural effect is difficult and often requires some manual touch after the fading to give
the product natural look.
The laser beam itself and the produced fumes are health hazardous.
Maintenance and servicing of the laser system may be troublesome in some circumstances.
12. Conclusion
Inspite of some limitation Laser technology is being extensively used as a replacement of some old
denim technology.
In Bangladesh many factories are using laser technology as a replacement of sand blasting, manual
hand sanding, destroying, grinding etc. where the sands are hazardous for body skin as well as for the
health of the workers.
Proper and large scale use of this technology can greatly increase the productivity and can ensure no
negative impact on environment and human health.
