2. Defining ‘Sustainable Soil Management’
“Management practices that protect soil and
enhance its performance for the production of goods
and provision of ecosystem services without
degrading or impairing on- or off-site ecosystem
functions.”
3. Why do we need to promote SSM?
• Maintain soil functions and ecosystem services
• Sustaining long term food security
• Climate change mitigation and adaptation
• Maintain soil biodiversity

OUTPUTS Indicators ASSUMPTION AND RISK
PILLAR 1. Promote protection and conservation and sustainable management of soil resources for sustained
productivity and restoration/rehabilitation of degraded/problem soils
A.1 Capacity development for
strengthening national strategy
formulation, technical and extension
services and mechanisms on the ground for
sustainable soil management, conservation
and restoration.
Pre and post test is carried out in relation
to the training and other field activities
aimed at improvement of capacities.
Partners need to select fully
qualified participants.
A.2. Scaling up and implementation of
sustainable soil management practices at
regional and national levels (preventing
degradation) and enhanced soil
productivity and ecosystems services
Reports from national authorities on the
number of hectares in which sustainable
soil management, conservation and
restoration practices have been
implemented.
Successful engagement of top level
scientists and soil practitioners
needs to be ensured.
A.3. Restoration/rehabilitation of degraded
and/or problem soils for improved
livelihoods, food security and increased
resilience (ecosystems at risk).
Number of hectares that have been
restored/rehabiliated; there should be a
strong will from the national authorities to
implement the activities.
All classical risks in this type of
projects, e.g. regarding the
selection of suitable areas,
sufficient and timely counterpart
support by country authorities, full
account of local conditions.
A.4. Networking and disseminating
documentation on measures for soil
protection, management and restoration.
Number of networks assisted and
documented measures effectively and
widely disseminated

AND SCALING UP OF SUSTAINABLE LAND MANAGEMENTAND SCALING UP OF SUSTAINABLE LAND MANAGEMENT
Goal of the Project is: to contribute to arresting and reversing current
global trends in land degradation.
The global environmental objective of the Project is to contribute to
combating desertification land degradation and drought (DLDD)
worldwide through scaling up sustainable land management best practices
based on evidence based and informed decision making.
Country-participants: 15 countries
8. Project Components
Component 1: National and local decision-support on combating DLDD
and promoting mainstreaming and up-scaling of SLM best practices
1.1.1 DLDD and SLM assessments and information on SLM best practices
1.1.2 Mainstreaming of DLDD and SLM assessment findings
1.1.3 Regional and inter-regional capacity development and experience sharing
1.2.1 Strengthened delivery mechanisms for SLM upscaling, awareness raising, and
training
1.2.2 Implementation and upscaling of SLM best practices
1.2.3 Strengthening country and regional capacity for DLDD and SLM scaling up
Component 2; Global DLDD and SLM Knowledge Management and
Decision-support Platform
2.1.1 FAO-WOCAT, online and open access DLDD and SLM decision-support
platform
2.1.2 Guidelines for methods and tools to assess DLDD and SLM
Component 3: Monitoring and Evaluation and diddimination of project
results

Editor's Notes
In the framework of the UNCCD, under the recommendations of the FAO Regional Conference for Europe and Central Asia on Agriculture and based on the country priorities as being defined in the country priority frameworks (2012-2015),
An important Regional Result for Europe and Central Asia is that :
Countries are supported in the promotion and development of sustainable land management and planning
