2. Production reflections
• This proforma is to record how you worked on your production
• You should complete this each week during production
• Consider all relevant areas that you covered that week
• Think about what worked/what didn’t work/how you can improve
and actions for the following sessions/weeks
3. Process – week 1
For week one, I spent my time doing my initial plans.
This is where I had three ideas, and had to narrow it
down to one. It took me a while to come up with
three good ideas, however once I had them I was
pleased and all three of them were potentially good
ideas and ones I was definitely able to do. All my
ideas were for songs that I am very familiar with,
which would’ve given me an advantage when editing
as I knew all the best areas where a lot of editing
would work. Once I came up with three three ideas I
had to do a mind map and then narrow it down to
one. In the end I chose my first idea, which was
Nightmares by Easy Life as I felt like it was the
strongest based on the idea I had for it. It also meant
that I didn’t have to rely on many people as it only
had one person in the video, which is another reason
why I chose it.
4. Process – week 2
Week 2 was spent completing my research and
experiments task. This involved using other videos to
find techniques that I could use for mine, and then
trying to complete some tasks of my own. The
research went well and I found techniques that I
could use for my video that looked good and weren’t
overly complicated so I could complete them well. In
the end I chose a scene from Baby Driver, a movie
based around music, the music video My Blood by
Twenty One Pilots, which was full of music video
conventions that I could use myself, and an editing
techniques from Sin City called masking. Afterwards
during my experiments, I did a transition similar to
one in My Blood, as well as trying masking. Both
went quite well and I was happy to try them again
when editing my final video.
5. Process – week 3
On week 3 I completed my proposal and my pre-
production. The proposal is a short word document
talking about areas of my music video that haven’t been
mentioned yet, for example the target audience of my
music video. This didn’t take long so I was able to
complete my pre-production in the same week. That
took a bit longer as it was a lot more full. The pre-
production was everything I needed for when I go into
filming, the shot list, a concept board, structural
breakdowns, and a storyboard. To me when filming, the
shot list was by far the most important tool I needed. It
allowed me to know exactly what I was doing and how to
do it, which really made filming a lot quicker, as well as
making the shots better quality. The storyboard was less
important, however it was good to have a visual version
of my story before I made it, so I knew what I wanted it
to look like.
6. Process – week 4
Over the weekend of week 3, I filmed all my footage,
freeing up week four to edit it all of it. I started by
laying down the music, and making cuts to the beat,
so I was starting with the basics of what I was
supposed to do for the tasks. After that was done to
a good degree of accuracy, I went on to add more to
it. Some areas of the video were supposed to in the
dark, however to avoid a large amount of grains in
the shot, I did it while it was light, so I needed to edit
the colour to make it seem darker. I didn’t do a
perfect job at this, but I did it well enough that it
looks dark. Finally at the end I changed a cut to make
it dissolve instead. When the character closes her
eyes I didn’t want it to cut to straight to black, I
wanted it to slowly transition to it, so I added a
dissolve cut to solve this, and it did exactly what I
wanted it to.
7. Process – week 5
For the final week I made my evaluation. It was full
of pros and cons about my music video, and there
was plenty of both. I talked about what areas I
would improve next time and what went well in the
different sections, such as research or time
management. I also did a comparison of techniques
between my video and the different videos I used
in my research. Nothing of mine was as smooth
and there is a lot of room for improvement,
however I thought I did okay as it came out well.
Finally I asked others how they thought it went,
and asked them what they did and didn’t like,
giving me feedback about what I can improve on
next time.
