Composition II
Week Nine
Tuesday
October 18, 2016
Change to the syllabus:
Switching lectures: Week 11 and Week 12
-Week 11:Analyzing Visual Arguments
-Week 12: Writing and Professionalism
Using “Attention Grabbers”
 A technique used by writers to hook your reader’s attention and get them
interested in your topic
 This is the only instance it is acceptable to use a citation in your introduction
 What kind of information can we use for an attention grabber?
 A surprising fact
 A rhetorical generalization
 An anecdote
 Quotations
Using “Attention Grabbers” cont.
 Surprising fact
 They teach the reader something interesting and unexpected
 Can take the form of statistics or obscure information
 Make sure this is cited properly
 Ex: Seven people have died from Black Friday shopping events and ninety-eight
people have been injured in the fiasco, states Blackfridaydeathcount.com.
 Rhetorical generalization
 A general statement about you subject
 Should align your sensibilities with your reader
 Ex: We all know how hunger can make us act irrationally.
Using “Attention Grabbers”
 Anecdotes
 Considered the most effective in grabbing the attention of a reader
 Anecdotes: short stories that illustrate a point
 Should make a reader forget they are reading an essay
 Should use imagery and descriptive language
 DO NOT tell a LONG story– keep it concise and remember the point of your essay
 Ex: Imagine a place with clean, crisp air and the gentle hum of surrounding
wildlife. See it in your mind– a place where kids play in green grass and the lake is
so clear that families swim in it on hot weekends. It would be like a dream to live
in an unpolluted world.
 Quotes
 Should make the reader feel as though they were dropped into a conversation on
your topic
 Make sure to use a citation and quotation marks
 Former US President, Franklin D. Roosevelt, once said, “There is nothing to fear,
but fear itself.”
Break into groups of 4
 Your instructor will assign your group a thesis statement from the list below.
With your group, create 3 attention grabbers for your topic. Feel free to look up
quotes and facts on your phones.
1. Politicians have a responsibility to create laws and policies that protect the
environment. This blatant disregard for the world we live in will result in ruination
and national devastation.
2. Elementary age students are benefiting from longer recesses and daily, in-class
exercise. This type of physical education should be continued through out middle
school and high school.
3. Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte creates a strong commentary for the
frustration of Victorian era women and their social expectations regarding
marriage.
4. Not all elderly people are poor drivers, but every person should be required to
retake their driving test at the age of seventy. We must recognize that the body
begins to fail us at a certain age, and precautions must be taken to ensure the
safety of all drivers.
5. Celebrities are public figureheads and a representation of our nation, because of
this all celebrities must be held accountable for their behavior in public spheres.
6. Cartoons are a fun and creative form of satire. Many people find cartoons both
humorous and politically influential because they mimic society in an unrestricted
world.
APA Style Format
Week Nine
American Psychological Association
 Turn to page 272
 Typically used in the social sciences
 How is APA similar to MLA?
 Paper must be double spaced, Times New Roman, size 12 font
 All information cited in the essay must correlate to an entry on the bibliography
 Any information that is not common knowledge or your idea must be cited
 Use attributive tag, then a parenthetical citation
 Transition sentences are employed
 Paper has an introduction, body, and conclusion
APA Bibliography
 Instead of a “Works Cited”, APA calls the bibliography References
 Still employs the hanging indent
 Authors are listed alphabetically by last name
 A list of entry citation models can be found on page 397
Running Head
 A shortened version of the paper’s title that appears in the header of every
page
 Cannot exceed 50 characters, including spaces
 In all capital letters
 Left aligned
 Page numbers should be right aligned
 On the title page, include the words Running head:
Create a Running head for the cover page
 Header
 Edit Header
 Check the “Different first page” box
 Click “Page Number”
 Use “Plain Number 3”
 Type Running head: TITLE OF YOUR PAPER
 Click “Insert Alignments” tab
 Select “right”, “margin”, and “none”
 Click OK
 Scroll to next page and repeat
 Except on pages 2 and onward only use “TITLE OF YOUR PAPER”
APA Cover Page
 Has a Running head
 A title
 5 “enters” down from the top
 Should summarize the paper’s main claim and identify variables under discussion
 Should be centered
 Not bold, underlined, or italics
 Name of the author
 Include credentials
 Name of institution
 Ex: Lincoln Land Community College
 Date
 Month Day, Year
 Spell out month
Abstract

 Title the section “Abstract” and center it above the paragraph
 Abstract is not indented
 All other paragraphs are indented
 Has its own page
Keywords
 Located under the abstract
 Format:
 Keywords in italics with a colon following
 Centered under abstract
 Should include 2-4 keywords about your topic
 These are phrases you use a lot throughout the paper or terms you coined
 Should be no more than 3 words
 Only capitalize proper nouns
 Example:
Keywords: banned books, Victorian literature, woman’s monomyth
DUE:
No journal this week
 APA Style Quiz 10/25
 Final Paper proposal due 10/25 to drop box
