• Networking: interacting with other people and exchanging information
• Develops contacts
• Should help further your career
• Writing plays an essential role in networking
• Write down contact information
• Send emails
• Helps to communicate professionally
• Creates a calculated environment for communication
4. WHO DO I NETWORK WITH?
• People within you field of study
• Go to community events
• Be social
• Bring a friend
• Do not be afraid to ask for contact information
• EVERYONE.
• You don’t know who knows who
• Be personable with everyone
• Have your own contact information on the ready
5. HOW DO I NETWORK?
• LISTEN
• Ask questions
• Seem interested
• Dress professionally
• Be in control
• Follow up
6. IN CLASS SPEAKER
• Now is your chance to network. Listen to what our in-class speaker has to say
about herself and her work. ASK HER QUESTIONS. Develop this contact and use
it to create the resume and cover letter for your extra credit project.
7. CREATING A COVER LETTER
• A cover letter tells a possible contact or employer about your accomplishments
• An opportunity to show that you can effectively communicate
• Formatting:
• Employ all proper writing mechanics
• Limit your cover letter to a single page
• Arrange points in a logical sequence

• Include:
• The correspondence’s contact information
• A salutation
• Example: Dear Mrs. Schafer
• Introduction, body, and conclusion
• A closing statement
• You signature and printed name
• Your contact information

• Cater your letter to the correspondent
• Use as much specific information as possible
• Appeal to the correspondent's self interest
• Keep the tone of the letter formal
• Even if you had a casual interaction with them
10. CREATING A RESUME
• Resumes are essential to professionalism
• Formatting for resumes can be subjective
• All resumes should include:
• Your contact information
• Your career objectives
• Your work history
• Your academic accomplishments
• Any other merits
11. CREATING A RESUME CONT.
• Your contact information
• Create a header
• Include:
• Full name (and title)
• Your mailing address
• Your phone number
• A fax number if you have one
• Your email address
12. CREATING A RESUME CONT.
• Your career objectives
• Write a 1-4 sentence paragraph about your career objective
• What do you hope to accomplish?
• What are you working towards?
• How do you want to influence the community?
• Make sure that this information is in a legible font
• You do not have to indent
• Only ONE paragraph
13. YOUR WORK HISTORY
• Include jobs that you have worked
• List these jobs in chronological order
• Include the dates
• Include bullet points that explain your “tasks” at this job
• Do not include jobs you worked at for less than 6 months
• Do not include jobs you got fired from
• Only provide contact information if it is requested
14. YOUR ACADEMIC ACCOMPLISHMENTS
• Include all degrees and certificates earned
• Include specific information about your education:
• Type of degree earned (Associate’s, Bachelor’s, etc.)
• The name of the university you attended
• Spell it out– no acronyms
• Your major and any fields of focus
• Include ALL schools, not matter how far in your education are or what field you
are studying in

• Include a list of all accomplishments
• Any awards you have won
• Any community recognition
• Any certificates (CPR, Food Safety, etc.)
• Any credible thing that makes you look better as a professional

• Other sections you can include:
• Community service/ involvement
• Technological expertise
• Niche groups in your field
17. WRITING A THANK YOU NOTE
• Always follow up an interview or professional interaction with a thank you letter
• This is courteous and often expected in professional environments
• This is a chance to show your contact that you appreciate their time and advice
• Keeps this contact open for future exchanges
• Use correct writing mechanics
• Use specific information from the interview/ interaction
• Use business letter formatting
