15. By integrating innovation tools and resources into BAU we were able to solve problems more efficiently, save time, improve outcomes and drive tangible cost savings in projects.
Thanks Louise North Shore City is one of the cities of Auckland, with a population of 220,000. North Shore is a beautiful area, and the locals have voted to support an ambitious programme to reduce wastewater spills and keep the beaches clean, significantly earlier and at the highest standard of any of Auckland’s cities. That’s my tourism plug My name is Sarah Sinclair, I work for SKM, and we’ve been Principal Consultant for the last 9 years to help North Shore deliver its improvement programme. My role is programme manager of the work we do to design and manage construction of the improvements to the wastewater network. I am also one of SKM’s sustainability practitioners, tasked with bringing more sustainable outcomes into projects. Today I’m going to talk about our project as a vehicle for developing engineering innovation tools, then I’m going to cover 2 examples of the use of the tools, one at design stage and one on site. I’m going to start with the boundaries to our innovation. This is the city in plan... There is one sewage treatment plant and a network of really big pipes already in place. Most of the infrastructure was put in place in the 1960s, and essentially we’ve grown more than expected, so we’ve got smaller pipes than we need now in some areas. We’ve also got 2 growth areas, to the north east and north west of the city, where we need to put in new infrastructure – I’m going to talk more about the north eastern one in a minute. My team start at concept design, and work though to handover of each project, aiming for 2 or 3 major construction projects and a few minor improvements every year.
In order to integrate innovation into project management processes to make it part of BAU Before we designed and developed the tools we had to; Identify the stages where innovation would be used (5 main phases throughout the project development process); Concept Design, Preliminary Design, Detailed Design, Construction, Operations & Maintenance Select the most user friendly innovation tools for two purposes for generating options and evaluating options – and they had to be simple in order to fit with tight project timeframes Develop and adapt the innovation tools to ensure that we engaged an engineering audience
