2. MISE-EN-SCENE
• Monster is a 2006 movie created by Jennifer Kent. In the movie there is a creepy doll under
the stairs which eventually starts terrorising the family. At one point of the movie they meet
the Monster which is the doll that turns into a monster in the night. The creature feeds itself
with the human fear and grows which makes it big and dominant. But the mother starts
treating the monster as a naughty child which controls the monster and sends it back to its
room.
• Lighting – the lighting is fairly lit which makes the scene very mysterious and builds up the
tension.
• Costumes – The myth of good people wearing white and bad people wearing black is
conformed in this movie. Because the mom and the kid are wearing fairly light clothes and
the monster is covered in black which makes it scary and creepy at the same time.
• Props – The main prop is the sword used by the kid to poke the doll with, and sort of explains
why the monster is so mad and therefore it starts chasing the kid. The other prop is all the
pans and the boiling water – which makes a bobbling sound that continuous to raise and
indicates that something will happen very soon.
3. SOUND
• The continuous jumpy screams of the kid makes the audience ready
that something will happen. The boiling water which continuously raises
and gets louder and louder indicates that something will happen very
soon.
• When the monster decides to attack we can hear the loud screams and
the squeaking doors which makes the scene scary and very creepy.
4. CAMERA
• There are a lot of classic horror movie camera shots. For example the
close up shots which puts the audience in the actors point of view. The
close up shots are also used to cover the fact that the movie is very low
budgeted because if you have wide shots you will need to fill these
shots with props which costs money.
• The other camera shot used is the shot from the bottom when the
director decides to show the monster. This shot makes the monster
very dominant and threatening.
• The close up of the monsters face which is not very clear allows the
audience to use their imagination to create the scariest ’monster’ they
possibly could.
5. EDITING
• The editing throughout the whole movie is fairly slow with a few cuts
between the different camera shots.
• The first editing that I discovered is when the mother opens the door
and the doll's head gets closer and closer with a loud scream.
• There is also one point when the doll transforms into the monster and
gets bigger and bigger because of the loud screams and the fear which
feeds the monster.
