LIGHTING
WHY SHOULD WE CONSIDER
LIGHTING IN A TRAILER?
• A trailer is used to entice audiences and create a feeling
with an audience, so that they will come and see the
film that is being promoted.
• The lighting in a trailer is very important as it sets a
mood or tone and reflects the action that it covers.
• Most of the time the lighting in a trailer is bright when
there is a happy moment and darker or with more
shadows when it is a sad or intense moment, however
this can differ.
• This subtle change in lighting can really extenuate
different moods to the audience, therefore I will
endeavour to use different lighting for different scenes,
to reflect the emotions in the trailer,
EXAMPLE 1
ME AND EARL AND THE DYING GIRL
• This film is really close to my film with the storyline
and the mood I want to portray therefore looking at
the lighting in this trailer has helped me to see what
I could use in mine.
• The dark lighting reflects a sombre or sometimes
awkward mood so we as an audience also feel
sombre and awkward.
• The shadow when Rachel is by the stairs makes her
seem mysterious as we don’t really know much
about her at the moment.
• However the scene where Rachel is smiling is light
with a bright background that seems a bit clinical
but still reflects a happy mood.
EXAMPLE 2-
IF I STAY
• This film is a little like mine in the fact that it is about
an incident that changes someone’s life therefore it
would have the same emotions as my trailer.
• The lighting in this trailer seems to be opposite to
generic lighting in trailers.
• The sad scenes in this trailer have bright lights, which
could reflect the ‘light at the end of the tunnel’ or the
clinical lights I mentioned with Me and Earl and the
Dying Girl.
• The happy scenes seem to have a dark tone, not
because they are emotional but probably because of
the cosy atmosphere they are trying to present.
CONCLUSION
• In conclusion, in my trailer I would like to use brighter scenes for happier moments
and darker scenes for deeper, more emotional moments.
• However, in both of the examples, the use of clinical bright lights is effective in
showing the struggle to hang on to life throughout the trailers.
• I will try my best to make sure I include different lightings in my trailer to make it as
authentic as possible and I think it will make my trailer look a lot better than if I only
used one shade of lighting.
